Suffern takes on Greece Athena/Odyssey, the No. 1 team in the state; Mamaroneck and White Plains meet with second place in League 1 on the line; and Iona Prep is likely in a must-win situation against Stepinac — just some of the highlights from a huge 12-game schedule Saturday.
First, let’s review what happened on Friday. This weekend got off to an incredible start. Robert Caffrey (two goals and two assists) tied the game with a tenth of a second left in regulation, and Nick Belger (two goals, one assist) scored the winner with 1:29 left in overtime as Lakeland/Panas defeated Kennedy/PV 5-4. Sean Sullivan had a hat trick and Luke Martin made 40 saves for K/PV, which came in with a 2-11 record (L/P was 12-4).
Later Friday, Ossining took control of League 3 with a 4-1 win over New Rochelle. Jake Towers had two goals and an assist and Joe Riley made 21 saves. New Rochelle eighth grader Mark Umbro scored less than 24 hours after receiving oxygen because of the carbon monoxide leak. Here’s the full story.
We got three other scores — Zac Hiller had two goals and one assist and scored in the shootout (along with Jake Jaeger) as Suffern defeated Lancaster 2-1 in a shootout after the game ended in a 3-3 tie. Chris Mastocola had two goals and four assists and Tyler Perrelle had a hat trick as Mahopac defeated John Jay 8-5 to get to .500 in League 1. And Matt Willows had five goals and an assist, Jake Shuman had three goals and four assists, and Chris McIndoe made 20 saves as Clarkstown North shut out Brewster 8-0.
I’ll update this post if more information comes in, but moving on to Saturday:
Suffern will play at 3 p.m., the same time a Sport-O quadrupleheader of Sleepy Hollow/Irvington-Nyack/TZ, Pearl River-Greeley, Clarkstown South-Fox Lane and North Rockland-John Jay starts up. At 6:30, E/T/B plays a rematch with Brewster at the Ice Hutch (the Eagles won 10-5 to start the season), and at WSA there’s a good doubleheader of Ossining-Pawling and Scarsdale-Mount Pleasant.
At 8:15, I’ll be at Hommocks for Mamaroneck-White Plains, at 8:30 is the big CHSHL game between Iona Prep and Stepinac, (UPDATE: and at 8:50 there’s a League 1 game up at Brewster between Mahopac and Pelham).
Here are some quick predictions: I know nothing about Greece Athena/Odyssey (or Greece Athena Arcadia or Olympia), but I’ll take my chances picking the undefeated No. 1 team in the state. I also like a revenge-minded Mamaroneck to beat White Plains, and Iona Prep, which dearly needs the game, to beat Stepinac.
Over at Sport-O, I think North Rockland will bounce back against John Jay, Pearl River will beat Greeley again, SH/I dominates Nyack/TZ and Clarkstown South squeeks by Fox Lane. Back in Westchester, Brewster keeps it close but falls again to E/T/B and Ossining keeps the momentum going against Pawling. I realize there hasn’t been an upset yet, so here it goes — a resurgent Mount Pleasant takes out Scarsdale.
Please post your updates here today, along with your thoughts from last night’s games. Feel free to make predictions, but if it’s getting late (after 3 p.m.) make sure you say PREDICTION so no one thinks it’s a real score.

no way Mt. pleasant pulls out the upset. Scarsdale is playing their best hockey and no one realized that they were missing johnson and klein, two of there 8 regulars that see the ice the whole game. Oliverio and felix have been playing great hockey and there is no way Mt. pleasant’s D can obtain them. Im looking for a …......
6-2 scarsdale win
Plus Gluck is far superior to Rockland’s goalie and etb’s goalie. Mt. Pleasant will have a much tougher time scoring on Gluck
Heard a North player broke his leg in the CN – Brewster game. Any report on who and how he is doing?
That delay pushed back the 3rd and 4th games at BIA. Byram Hills – Carmel didn’t start until 10:15pm. Carmel won 2-1.
north rockland rescheduled the game vs john jay tomorrow to wednesday of next week. they are now playing yorktown instead to get the league games done before any other ones.
mamo 5 wp 1
jackson with 3 goals and 2 by “surprise” players for mamo
broderick with 1 goal for wp
hagen with 6 assists (hehe)
no one cares about the chsaa:
Like North Rockland and John Jay would romp against the CHSAA. Give me a break. It is a high school blog for everyone.
harold and co., ready for this?
iona and fordham are currently both out of playoff position
keep in mind tie break succession (below)
most wins
least losses
head-to-head record
least goals allowed
most goals scored
least penalty minutes
standings going into tonight
1st, stepinac, 3 left, 7-4-1, 15pts
2nd, farrell, 1 left, 7-6-1, 15pts
3rd, st. ant’s, none left, 7-8, 13pts
4th, chaminade, 2 left, 6-6-1, 13pts
5th, iona, 1 left, 6-7-1, 13pts
6th, fordham, 1 left, 6-8, 12pts
if iona loses tonight, they are out (chaminade and fordham have 1 game remaining, any result eliminates iona)
no one cares about the chsaa,
would you just shut it. the place is going to be a mob scene tonight..
if nobody cares, why would it be a mob scene.. geesh
Pelham vs Mahopac tonight at Brewster. 9:50pm
I believe the Mahopac-Pelham game is at 8:50 at BIA tonight.
Last night-
Shows you should never leave early as evidently Farrell made a game of it, until that point the game was eerily similar to the St A-Fordham game and I didnt see St A’s best defenseman. As for Fordham-Chaminade, as I thought, Fordham had no answer for McNally (2 goals) and really only pressured Cham’s 3rd line. The first 2 lines were all over them with all 4 goals coming from the Coyle-Lawler-Bruno line. I really thought Fordham should have used Spillane and his line a little more than they did. Overall too much size and too much McNally for them to handle though.
There is no chance that Mt P beats Scarsdale. I don’t know that Gluck is playing his best (had trouble seeing the puck against Ytown) but Felix and Oliverio are on fire. 8-0 prediction. Cant’ tell anything from North Rockland’s w & L’s anymore-
keep hearing that kids are missing or benched. Ytown plays North Rockland tonight-should help tell if North Rockland is real. Ytown is winning some games but not against solid teams (NFA, MtP, RTH).Lets GO stepinac!!! lol
big game
Hey St ants
Good job on a great comeback. I have a feeling the whole league is rooting for Step tonight, lol. It means something to all
Anyone know how Yorktown did against Newburgh last night?
topshelf, even I’LL be watching tonight “neutrally” lol
st. ant’s = magical 2nd half, definitely want to see them in playoffs
cambria/molinaro apple core update
WILL BE at stepinac game
nj hitmen at apple core (exhibition), 3:15, long beach
chsaaguy
I’m sure non of the teams want to see them in. Really
can’t see Iona losing tonight unless they overplay that top line because they are deep enough to roll 3 lines and just skate Step into the ice. But who knows…
topshelf and co.,
cambria’s and molinaro’s jr. b team really helps explain chshl alot. you’ve got molloy and kellenberg students (former teams of chshl, dropped chshl b/c players weren’t showing up to games to play for school) and lots of chaminade (kavanagh, scarpato, brennan) and st. anthony’s players (pascalli) on the team now, basically partially explaining why in chshl anybody can beat anybody on any given night, as the school teams are rarely competing with their full rosters of talent…
http://www.applecorejunior.com/newac/JRBEMPIRE/JRBEMPIREROSTER.html
also, when looking at apple core’s jr. a roster, has anyone ever seen grinhaus (from scarsdale, went to play up in lake placid at northwood prep, where mike richter went) play?
http://www.applecorejunior.com/newac/JRA0809/Meettheteam.html
i think suffern will take this one. i heard greece hasnt played any1 whose competitive this season. they have only played teams in there section who are not that strong. They barely beat liverpool 2-0 who mamo beat 7-0. regardless every game is different but there similiar to CN in they run there first line for most of the game, which benefits suffern since they dont want to play a team with alot of depth who will wear them down.
prediction:3-1 suffern
5-1 mamo
topshelf,
agreed
what is going to be unreal is if a tie happens tonight (i think IP will either win on an EN or the game will finished a tie), it is going to make the few remaining chshl games REALLY interesting (especially for iona and st. anthony’s), starting with stepinac-chaminade in flushing this wednesday night…
the player who was injured in the brewster clarkstown north game was matt willows. he did not break his leg but he did have a bad bruise on his knee. heard he is going for an mri sometime this weekend and will have it checked out.
self explanatory
as someone posted a while ago, and i agree, in long island, lots of hockey talent, but no one plays high school, just club(s)
kind of like some parts of minnesota/wisconsin/michigan…hs games are seen as a joke…
this mamo/suffern no one cares guy better get banned before the season ends
chsaaguy
I was wondering if IP pulls the goalie in a tie game because although a tie knocks out s ants it brings Fordham into it vs IP. I know it’s risky but 14pts leaves their destiny in other’s hand’s
His kid probably got rejected at Bosco or Iona
To Chsaaguy,
Please update on the Hitman/Applecore game. Many people thing EJHL is much better than the AJHL. I am not an expert on the topic only have seen 3 games from each league this year. But, in the few games I have seen, I haven’t seen a difference.
topshelf,
wow, you are right…if its a tie, and fordham wins their last game (against chaminade friday 5:15 playland), fordham in, iona out
acha,
will do
ACHA
At the level Cambria is at the leagues are quite equal in my opinion
What is up with Pawling???? Two losses in a row to S/NS and Pearl River. Delavergne played some against S/NS but not at all against Pearl River. Was he sick or something?
The ref’s last night at the Brewster /CN were absolutletly terrible (both ways). They lost control of the game in the 1st 5 minutes and never got it back. Brewster came out with a game plan to check Willows which is what every team is doing but the difference is that they were taking cheap shots that were not being called. The play that Matt Willows got hurt on was a dirty play which was uncalled for and from my vantage point looked intentional.
Oh, never mind, I was under the impression that it was the Hitmens top team against applecores top team, I have only seen one game of the lower league this year, I know nothing about them, I thought we were talking about the Junior A AJHL vs. Junior A EJHL
The refs from the CN/Brewster game were HORRIBLE! Matt Willows was HIT FROM BEHIND! by # 16, and the refs gave a 1:30 penalty to #24! That player #16 should be tossed and not allowed to play! You dont go out with the intent to injure. I hope someone from above is looking into that incident.
Tonight is game one of the playoffs, so to speak for Iona.
It will be another classic Iona / Stepinac thriller.
Glad to hear CO problem is gone. Would have been a lot worse if boiler problem happened tonight.
Lot of interest in this one. This is one Mike Mitchell would have loved to see. Keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
acha,
sorry, but yes, jr. b programs for both
n4cer,
agreed, mike, we’ll be watching this one for you (hope your program, holy cross, gets promoted to A for next season, definitely deserving, haven’t lost a game in B and owning that division)
etb-brewster to 1st game of doubleheader at ice hutch (6:30), ip-stepinac 8:30
probably going early to see what etb is all about…
Topshelf and co..
Thank you wish we started earlier so we didnt have to hope coach scanlon was in attendance last night hope he hates iona enough to go all out and get the W hope they have all there guys and maybe Molinaro and cambria make a wrong turn on the way to the game haha just kidding
No Hagen, Pesce, McGee, or Macnamara tonight, the gulls have a game
travel conflict, thanks for the forewarning
I was not at the game but I truly hope Willows is not seriously hurt and can back right away. That being said CN hopes of a any titles or done if Willows can not play. Their goal production will drop off and CN could even be in danger of losing the league 2 title.
I hope you’re not a betting man Harold. You like the #1 Ranked Greece Thunder but word is that they have not been tested at all. They do not play outside Section 5 which leaves the door open for a lot of skepticism. You may be right..but Suffern has owned this team. Last year they beat Greece 4-0 in which it very easily could have been 7 or 8 nothing. I’d give Suffern a better than 50-50 chance of pulling the upset. Mounties 3 Greece 1
chsaaguy
Saw Grinhaus a couple of years ago and he was the best player at his age group. Don’t know how he progressed but obviously did to a certain extent.
St ants
You don’t have to worry about Scanlon wanting to win, that’s for sure. Also, those Step kids want to beat Iona as much as you want to beat Cham
I really hope Willows is ok. if anyone knows of any updates on his condition, please post. at least it sounds like its a bruise, which clearly isnt a broken bone. it is truly a shame to see that some players are so jealous of other’s abilities and have to resort to cheap shots. that is the definition of cowardness.
these two teams meet again on wednesday at palisades, and if willows is able to play, watch out brewster. i would probably be ok for CN running up the score on wednesday as payback.
topshelf
sounds good to me lol
Brewster came out throwing cheap shots, slashing, spearing..Willows was the main target and still skated circles around the brewster benders until in the second when he was stratleing across the blueline while Shuman was coming through the neutral zone with the puck and the defensemen basically jumped and through his body into Willows’ leg. Completely blatant and uncalled for. Willows played the rest of the period putting in another 2 goals. He started the third and put 1 more goal in on the first shift than left the ice to rest his leg, nothing terrible or worthy of missing the next game. If I was Brewster I’d watch out for a 25-0 CN win on thursday.
any update on how suffern is doing ?
and what time does the game start?
if i was on north, i would go for blood the next time they play brewster. if a team has no class like they obviously showed then north should just go on a romp
i believe sufferns game starts at 3
Biff,
I think Pawling just wanted to have some different players get time against League 4 teams. Obviously it backfired, but the TIgers will be a full strength tonight.
Harold,
S/NS is League 3 team this year…..
well the white plains mamaroneck game is pretty huge. i call mamaroneck winning 4-1
Hope Willows is not seriously hurt
but…
saw him play against WP last week and the refs were letting him get away with way too much.
Perhaps other players get frustrated with the lack of calls.
true test for sufferns goalie finally
yeah and scarsdales really bringin’ down the house this year
Is mountie style serious or just trying to be funny?
any updates? i hope that is not the score
he might be joking he posted that at 330 that the period is over game started at 3 with a 10 min warmup and anthem and at least 8 whistles and prob a time out if it really is 8-0
i think its a joke
0-0 after 1
http://www.syracuse.com/forums/hshockey/ is likely to be more accurate. Only one person there so far saying they heard Greece is winning, but no score update yet.
Thats a terrible joke
I am not even a Suffern fan, but was rooting for them, that just scarred me.
i hope whoever said the score was 8-0 Greece, assuming it was a lie, was not from Section 1. regardless of who’s playing, if a section 1 team goes upstate we should root for them
Brewster is a well coached team and fans have relayed that it was not a cheap shot. Willows plays hard and with that will come players who want to stop him. Period. Those bloggers who say that CN will now run up the score-
where have you been? CN has run up scores against every weak opponent this yearabsolutely classless act for HS sports. If anyone is to blame for willows getting hurt it is his coachthey were beating Ytown by 10 and he was on the ice with 2 minutes left-why? They were beating Scarsdale by 13 and still had him on the ice for the last shift. Obviously, the coaching staff is more concerned about his stats than honoring the game and respecting a opponents.2-2 beg. Of third. Norwin injured and out since early in the 2nd.
4-2 Greece, with an empty netter in the last min of play
poop
Schedule Update:
North Rockland plays Yorktown tonight at 9pm
Scarsdale Monday 4:15pm
John Jay Wednesday 5pm
All at SOR
The score indicates that it was likely a very fine effort by the Mounties. Let’s hope Norwin’s injury isn’t too severe.
Kevin is an outstanding young man as well as one of the best defenseman around. We hope he is okay and back playing soon. A great young man from a terrific family.
Schedule Change
schedule change
Are you sure about the 4:15 vs. scarsdale. Sounds like a very early game for a long distance. When was that changed?
Wake up call
A coaches number 1 job is to protect the players. They are suppost to have enough sense to realize when a player might be put in a position to be a target. This usually happens when a game decided before it’s over.No coach can tell when a kid will get hurt in a game nor can a coach tell what opposing players will do.In willows case first I hope he is ok,he is a special talent. We all hope he breaks the record but what a shame it would be if he lost his career in the process trying to get an extra 2 points in a 10-0 game. The coaching staff at CN has been doing this all year and this time it came back to haunt them. The coaching staff at CN has failed coaching 101.Please do not reck this career because of a cheap shot in a blowout game.Records are great but a career is more important.Sorry coach you are at fault and doing this kid a disservice.Grow up and be a coach.
SH/I 7 NY/TZ 2
Pearl River is winning 1-0 against Greely with about 10 minutes left in the third.
Suffern starts out the game 2 to 0. Next Greece scores on a ridiculous goal. Greece wraps it around the boards it hits the zamboni door pops out right to greece for an empty netter. I mean things happen, everyone gets lucky once and a while . After that Suffern got a scoring opportunity which was a shot by Nicholson that some people think went in and some people thought hit the crossbar. I personally thought it hit the crossbar but i can’t be positve. Then Norwin gets hurt. Greece scores again on a pass from one of the Suffern Defenseman. With 6 minutes left Greece scored their 3rd goal on a nice move. With 2:40 left Hill drew a penalty and on the powerplay Hill had a great opportunity to score which everyone thought he had but the Greece defenseman made a great play by tripping Hill and taking a penalty. Now Suffern pulls the goalie and its a 6 on 3!But Greece won the draw and the kid ripped it goal line to goal line for the empty netter. So theres the Suffern Greece game
will be at ip-step with blackberry for updates
manhattanville salvages a tie today after the loss yesterday
easily toughest weekend series of the season…
Does anyone know who Suffern used on defense after Norwin got hurt?
#27 Chris Byrnes
Coaching 101 he got hurt in the 2nd per in a 5-0 game. Should he sit the entire second half of a game because it is already won?
Etb down 1 with 7 left
PR won 1-0,
C South winning by 3 over fox lane
Sometimes you let the kid go for the gold. Let him have a chance at a record. His size will work against him in continuing much further. A coach should let him have his shot. Anyone know what happened to Gitler?
Etb 2 man pp down 1 with 1 left
Good Point, of course he shouldn’t sit the enitire second half of the game. I don’t think anyone is arguing that. I think the bigger question is should those guys be out there 10 of the 15 minutes each period, or should they be going out rolling 3 lines. You know you are going to be beat Brewster, so would it be better to play those guys 7-8 minutes a period using a line combo 1-2-1-2-3-1-2-1-2-3? I don’t know the answer, but I think thats the queston.
Brewster 8 etb 6
Etb = no gulls players
Ciotti best eagle on the ice
Brewster better than I expected
CN really doesn’t really have a 3rd line. They only have a few sophs/frosh. They don’t exactly have a wealth of young talent that they are trying to develop. It is the seniors time, so I say let em go.
I don’t think Gitler ever played college. I think he was IVY league material and just concentrated on school. Gitler was bigger than Willows, but not as quick or fast if I remember. But he can shoot the puck and he had little help (didn’t have a Shu or Mac). He had the same trademark wrist shot to the same side up high like Willows.
Gitler had to score though, they league wasn’t as good then and even though Scarsdale was in league 1, there were a lot of week teams. I guess a good example would be to compare him to ETB Hagen now (Although Hagen has more of a supporting cast) So Scarsdale wouldn’t beat teams 13-0. Scarsdale would beat teams 14-12 and Gitler would score 13 goals. Just like anyone else though, I remember when Scarsdale played Suffern and Gitler had only one goal in the game.
Gitler went to Cornell but didn’t play hockey… guess that speaks a little bit to the quality of the high school hockey around here – he also set the record on just a mediocre Scarsdale team… scarsdale lost a bunch of games that year and rarely had the blowouts CN has
any update on mamo wp?
Not sure what you’re talking about… Suffern wasn’t that good a few years ago – Scarsdale use to beat them bad… you might be thinking of CN, but I know Gitler scored a goal in like 30+ consecutive games including all of his senior year games
Yep Jon he did score in 30 or more, and I was at the Suffern game when he only had one, they almost broke the streak. The Gitler years I think were 2001-2003. You are correct Suffern wasn’t that good, but I am pretty sure they still beat Scarsdale. I remember specifically at the Ice Hutch in 2002, I have the vision of Mancuso going absolutely nuts on his team because they were beating Suffern 4-1 in the third, and would up losing 5-4.
And CN II, you need a better answer than that. Out of the 20 players on North’s roster, 15 are juniors or seniors so the theory of letting the seniors play is out the window. I am not buying that out of those 20 guys, that there aren’t 3 players to construct a 3rd line that is at least good enough to play 2 or 3 shifts each period against Brester, and give those other guys a rest.
Is there any update on Ossining Pawling game? Did ETB really lose to Brewster?
Step 1 iona 1 after 1
Molinaro playing d, no idea
Top 2 lines 3 d iona jv = can stay in game with iona v’s
Iona v = def not as fast as last year and early this season, also playing like they don’t want it
how is gizzo playing..? what about the crowd ?
Suprisingly, goodpoint CNII, your wrong. I saw the CN team play and after the solid 6-7 forwards and 4 defensemen they have, there is a huge, and I mean huge, drop off in talent. If CN was to put together a 3rd line of those left over forwards(I think about 5 or 6), it would be dangerous to put them out on the ice alone without a Willows or a Shuman to center them. Yes, it seems odd that Willows and Shuman play until the end of the 3rd but it’s only to ensure the safety of those other players who can barely skate and need to be protected/set up. Would you still yell at the coach if you saw a player who could barely skate be put on the ice and get laid out at the end of a game just because of his lack of skill? I certainly wouldn’t. Let Willows and Shuman play however much they have to play, if it works out for them it does, if it doesn’t you can all sit here and post about how you were right the hole time. For now, let CN win by football scores and run through the league, it’s highschool hockey, if being beat by 10 goals is going to make your kid go home at night and sulk, he shouldn’t be playing hockey.
Hmm…I just really don’t think the next 3 best players after the top 6 on North are as bad as everyone makes them out to be, who knows maybe I’m wrong. The only time I have seen them is warm-ups. But first off they are older..and if you saw Nyack/TZ’s first game, you would have a point that some of those freshman were at risk on the ice. But, even them, after 3 months of 3 practices a week….no longer have players that are still at risk and can’t stand up. And Nyack/TZ, believe it or not, have to play in a more dangerous league 4 where you have teams like Greely who get 250 pound football players on the ice who are just out there to hit…..Sorry just aint buyin it that these players aren’t playing because of their own safety.
Iona is up 3-1 in the 2nd
Middle of the second…..Iona 3 Stepinac 1
Iona 3 step 1 after 2, plus cambria hits a post
Iona much faster, gizzo playing better
i dont know what your talking about observer. i havent posted all day let alone that a team i support is losing 8-0.
any update from mamk-WP?
By the way…...Having Molinaro playing D is a fantastic move. He’s a strong skater and that way he can be on every other shift.
N/TZ has only one freshmen and he’s one of the better players!
I saw the N/TZ modified team play tonight at SOR and they maybe better than the varsity…no exageration!
4 to 1 Iona Prep
I heard that hagen has decided not to play for etb anymore, and that he will be only playing with the gulls.
It’s now 5 to 1 IONA PREP!!!!!!! Go Gaels!!!!!!
Still a little time left.. But this win gets Iona into the Playoffs! Should be exciting!
If anyone has become familiar wih USA Hockey new developmental program, it’s supposed to have AAA midget hockey be replaced by 6 regional “superteams”, that would completely forbid it’s members to play any high school hockey.
Good if Hagen doesn’t play anymore. At least the team knows to move forward. They could still be a good team once they learn not to rely one player.
7-1 mamk over WP at the end of 2
Iona 6 step 1
Final
Don’t know how step goes deep in playoffs, huffing and puffing 2nd and 3rd
If Mamk avenges there earlier defeat to WP, they will have finally earned ther no. 1 poll ranking.
I predict Mamo and CN final at West Point, as both will defeat Suffern in subsequent meetings..assuming a healthy Matt Willows.
who scored.. other stats. etcc…?
Hagen on ETB isn’t that good anyway. ETB will be a better team without him. The gulls won’t do anything anyway for him, he will just be another hockey player
It’s now 6 to 1. Looks like Iona finally has got their act together. They gave Stepinac a real beating tonight. Stepinac really doesn’t match up well against Iona. Iona has way too many weapons.
Hopefully this effort will continue. The playoffs are going to be alot of fun to watch. The way Iona played tonight, I could see them making it two in a row.
Again, A great move by Turnbull making Molinaro a defensemen. There’s NO WAY Miano can get around Molinaro.
Also, great game by Gizzo. Held up nicely after Stepinac went up 1 to 0.
you’re wrong…hagen has not decided to just play for the gulls. he will continue to play for etb, but the gulls will always come first, and thats understandable.

i dont know, I heard hagen has been given an offer from every college hockey team in the country and will be drafted in the next nhl draft
The Greece game was not lost today! It was lost in our earlier games in the season where a 4th defensive player could have been developed over the time. I believe in our coaches system, but the perfect storm hit at the worst time. Our best defensive player gets hurt and the kid who didn’t get a chance to improve is thrust into a game against the #1 team in the state! He was a deer in the head lights to say the least! Two huge critical errors in our own zone resulted in Greece getting the second and third goals. Again, it’s hard to say if he makes these errors if he had seen more playing time. Maybe, maybe not. The coaches see these kids more in practice than I do.
The first goal hit off of the off centerd Zamboni doors and bounced right back to a Greece player who stuffed it home. I’m not sure if I know of another rink with the Zamboni doors are located right behind the goals. This “freezer of a barn” was obviouly built for the NY fair rodeo and the use for hockey came later.
Overall the Mounties could have and should have won this game! But, the breaks didn’t go their way today. I believe, if Kevin Norwin doesn’t get hurt today the Thunder would be looking at their first loss.
Iona just took it to Stepinac. Stepina has two more games, if they lose them both then they could end up in 4th place.
At this moment, the playoff teams have been decided, but who’s in first, second, third and forth place will not be finalized until Feb 7th.
Good luck to all…...AND i know tht all the teams are happy the St ANthony’s just missed out… LOL
LOL…..LOL…...LOL…..LOL…..LOL He’ll be lucky to make a D2 club team….....
I think it’s great for section 1 hockey how well the teams play when they go upstate. It seems like any one of the 3 teams (Mamo,Cn or suffern) could win a state championship this year. If you break down the 3 teams Mamo is the most balanced, Cn is an offensive force with an improved defense and Suffern has the best defense. all 3 teams have what it takes to win a championship and that is a top notch goalie.
MMK Score?
st. anthony’s now mathematically eliminated
believe it or not, i don’t think anyone has clinched playoffs yet
unreal

Doesn’t Fordham get in if Chaminade loses it’s last 2?
Hagen will be lucky to play hockey after high school. he is nothing special
if chaminade ties or loses against stepinac wednesday night, if fordham wins, fordham’s in
if chaminade wins wednesday night, good night, playoff teams determined, fordham joins st. ant’s
topshelf,
you’ve seen chaminade as of late. will those few prime players be playing wednesday night for them? you think they’ll win against stepinac?
stepinac = looked very unspecial tonight
hey!!! Alex Hagen is my idol! I cry every time he chooses those stupid gulls over my beloved ETB. I even have a piece of his chewing gum from a year ago! He is going to the nhl. You’ll all see!
chsaaguy,
One thing for sure, the playoffs are wide open. Really don’t have a favorite like you did last year(IONA). This year, every team was able to beat each other. It depends on the defense and goalies now!
Anyone have a score Mamk vs White Plains?
Scarsdale 5 – mt pleasant 1, 3 min to go
I was reading earlier about running up the score. It has nothing to do with class. A team needs to keep playing their game. Yea, you mix in the other players, but it is not the responsibility of the winning team to keep it close, it is the responsibility of the other team to keep them from scoring, at least Ara Parsegian said that. Maybe if they did that, the score wouldn’t get out of hand. Interscholastic athletics are competitive. It may not be fair, but that is what it is. If you don’t want to see scores like 13-0, go play intermurals or rec league.
Someone else was talking about officiating. Overall, not just in the Brewster/CN game, it has been abominable. Yes, like it was said before, it is the coaches’ job to protect their players, but that is also the responsibility of the officials. When you see kids getting punched in the face after the whistle or checked in the back and no call being made, that is a problem. It has also been inconsistent. If the game is going to be called one way for one team and one way for another, that is simply wrong. The officiating is obviously going to differ from one game to the next, but in any one game, both teams should be getting the same calls.
now iona should be showing up against suffern and etb while chshl finishes up
both will be fun games to watch
chsaaguy
No surprise tonight and as a matter of fact I can’t see
Stepinac beating any of these teams 2 out of 3. They are short handed, totally gassed by 2nd period and their best player is out of shape. As for Chaminade, McNally will play Wed along with everybody else. He has yet to play against Step and they will never be able to handle him. Cham cant afford to let it get to Friday because I dont believe McNally makes it then. Not that they can’t beat Fordham without him but I would think a Friday game at Playland favors Fordham. Cham would only need a tie though.
Mamk: 7
White Plains: 4
Mamaroneck was leading 7-1 after the second, and subbed for Glasier a couple minutes into the third, with junior backup Chris Buly. Along with the change came some mixing and matching on lines, subs and seniors for experience. White Plains turned in some nifty skating in the final couple minutes and put in three goals.
Everything before that was all Mamaroneck, WP was not without chances, and Mamaroneck’s defense made some stupid plays once in a while, but WP either missed, or Glasier covered for the screw-ups. On the flip side, every WP miscue was batted home by alert Mamaroneck players, who benefited early (1st and 3rd) from huge mistakes by WP’s goalie, who at times looked completely lost, and seemed to have no idea of where the puck was on certain goals. Mamaroneck came out strong and played physically, and WP seemed to get carried away and distracted with late or harder than necessary hits in the second period, and Mamaroneck seemed to respond by concentrating more.
Mamaroneck wanted revenge and got it in a big way. The final score might be a bit deceiving, but the play was not.
topshelf,
agreed. mcnally won’t make playland game. also think chaminade wins wednesday night.
also, agreed on rocco being out of shape. very heavy and just glides around waiting for the puck to get to him rather than him getting to the puck (guess thats what happens when playing with roster of 12 and coach scanlon implementing that style…)
chsaaguy
Without that kick in goal at the buzzer last week against Cham, Step would be the odd team out. Don’t get me wrong, Step has a few good players but they all make the same toe curl move and cant possibly play at a high tempo so if you just play the body and skate you really have no business losing to them
what i was thinking all season
no way miano can get around molinero? what are you serious. what has molinero done all season to back this?
This hit happened in the first period in a 0-0 game. Willows is a target every game from the drop of the puck so he should what, just not play. The problem is not that they try to stop him, but that the kid tried to hurt him by hitting him from behind intentionally. After the hit he strutted away like he did a great thing. Talk about classless.
He can skate, play the body and knows the game….that’s why
If Alex Hagen scored 6 goals a game like Willows people wouldn’t say he is overrated.
Sorry, i forgot about that Brewster game. I dont know why he is different than Willows. I dont think he is as good in high school as Willows, but one is God and the other is an overrated snob. Just an observation from somebody who has lost to both.
Scarsdale 5 – Mt. Pleasant 1. Scarsdale outshot MP by a wide margin. Felix 2, Oliverio 2, Banks (freshman, first varsity goal). MP goalie played very well in 2nd period to keep it tied at 1-1 heading to third.
How can we beat these kids down. Seriously who of these dedicated kids are going anywhere with their hockey. You got so called star goalies talking about club hockey at best. Very sad this is the biggest games these kdis will ever play in. Gitler …done. Pavone…???? Daniels twins….NHL??? You got more chance of hitting lotto. Let them enjoy themselves. Hagan…Gulls instead of ETB. Who cares what teammates feelings get hurt.
Very confusing stuff for these kids or just part of a society which justifies what our little precious kids feel like doing. Travel vs. High School. challenge yourself or play it safe vs. Benders. parents watching or crowds of people. Confusing isn’t it. Blog on …blog on!!!
Hagen is a junior and scores 4 or 5 a night and gets a good number of assists. He’s a year younger than willows too so I don’t really see a problem here. And btw hagen rly doesn’t try in hs its kind of a joke to him. If he did try he would put up numbers like willows. Bottomline is he’s a great player and will most likely play fairly good d1 in college. Why does everyone have something against this kid?
Hagen is no Willows! Can’t even mention Hagen’s name in the same sentence as WIllows!
Mahopac beat Pelham 3-1
Mahopac 3 Pelham 1
Hagen – Willows what does it matter? they aint going anywhere. Getalife.com Go see a real college game or watch a real AAA travel game. Honeybake or maybe St. Marys.
HAGEN WILL NEVER, EVER PLAY D1. What a joke! Any chance for him to play at that level, would mean that he would leave the Gulls and ETB and go play for the 17 and under USA team. Like Clare did! He’s not even getting any sniffs!
whoever is saying that hagan is bad you are very dumb behind willows him and hiller are the next two best players in the section if this is true and i think it is just a rumor because someone wanted to stir something up, then etb will definately not be a better team without him he is their offense
I was wrong on Mcgee and Pesce, they played in their HS games today.
Hagens got a shot at D. 1 I think, but I don’t think he has got any offers yet, they usually come in the summer, at summer showcases. Word is that the new jersey avalanche team that Hagens team plays against has at least 5 players that are scheduled to be highly recruited by D. 1 teams when they start summer showcasing. Now that avalanche team that prunesti is on actually beat hagans team. while hagens team is a 92’ team the avalanche are a 93’ team, which is why they are getting more looks, obviously if a team a full year younger can beat the gulls, they must have some incredible talent, I am not sure if any of the gull players are being looked at, one year makes a huge difference, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see Hagen eventually make it D. 1, when Foster and the Daniels twins played here, no one (including myself) thought they would go D. 1 either.
We’re all idiots because we think Hagen is not the real deal… News Flash…...Hagen is NO WILLOWS, HAgen is Not playing D1 Hockey as long as he plays for EBT and the Gulls. If he’s that good, he should be playing Jr A somewhere! For you to sit there and tell everyone on this blog that he’s going D1 then you have NO idea waht the process is. One of the earlier bloggers was correct…..He will be lucky to play Club hockey.!!!!
just read all this stuff on hagen
hagen = nowhere near ncaa level
NR won 3-1 over Yorktown.
Pac 3 Pelham 1 Final.
north rockland beats yorktown 3-1 without oconnor. goals from meany, hoehn, and meigh. nr finally proved they can play and score without they top forward. should be a good game on monday vs scarsdale.
I said it in an earlier post, Pac will be a team to be dealt with, Mastrocola, Gyscek and Perelle goals, Fatone great in net. Did Pelham beat Suffern earlier in the year? You never know what a team can bring on any given night.
well now its over too bad we woke up and showed up too late and forfeited a game theres no doubt n my mind if we made the playoffs we would have taken it all =(
Yorktown let in two soft goals and two others called back. NR never in doubt of winning. Easily should have been 5 or 6 to 1. Decent officiating.
Mahopac is showing some late season muscle.
fan 2 and Get Real,
Do you think Willows has a chance at D1. Willows hasn’t left, nor does he play junior A.
Hagen, Prunesti, and Nicky Belger on LP are the only players in the section who have been invited to the USA national camp. Thats were they make 12 teams with 20 kids on each team made up of the best kids in the country. Those are where real scouts go, and not all of those players play D1, but they have gone and Willows has not. So while Willows is blowing local high school player’s minds they have been noticed by real scouts. I play with one of those three and kinda know the other two and I can tell you first hand two of them don’t try their hardest for high school. My teammate also looks more like he is better playing with other good players and not as good at “dangling a bunch of benders,” even though I know he can.
Look, all four of these players are great and I am jelous of all of them, but jelousy is no excuse for bashing other players.
any score on the Ossining vs Pawling game?
Both talents. Difference I see is that Willows is a tougher stronger player. plays two way hockey. Hagen only plays offense. Both are fantastic neither are complete enough to go D 1
Hagan Prunesti Willows. Only one of the three is carrying his team to an undefeated season.and playing the hardest schedule of the three So I give the edge to Willows
Matt willows did attend a usa hockey festival back when he was 14 years old.
PAC is looking strong as we get closer to the playoffs, did Pelham beat Suffer? Anything could happen on any given night!
There are very, very, very few kids that go straight from HS to the NCAA. Most have to go to juniors for a couple years first.
That’s why we dont think kids have D-I talent yet, they’re still 3-4 years away (even as a senior) from laying D-I hockey.
chsaa guy; no offense, i respect the fact that the iona jv is talented, but every time iona v is at fault we have to hear about how iona’s jv can skate with them. the ip soph skaters-tommy nolan, luke lynett, and nick pellow can skate circles around the jv (yes i am sorry but that does include logerfo, mcdermott, and chiarello). so lets imagine what rob molinaro, cambria, lopez, mcardle, rob pellow and the rest of the deep iona bench can do to the jv. the rest of the ip sophs did not make it because they could not cut in in the varsity level (with the exception of patalano). in terms of goalies, with soph gizzo facing shots from varsity teams (step, farrel, st.ants, suffern) as well as practicing with the big names from iona all season, he would have a huge upper hand, still improving with each game. defense-joe patalano is the ip jv defense. lets face it, aside from MAYBE young murphy no one but patalano would have a chance at stopping the varsity lines, and even he cannot do it alone. i mean no disrespect to the jv because i am an iona fan myself, but it is almost like you resent the varsity team when you make comments like:
Top 2 lines 3 d iona jv = can stay in game with iona v’s
Harold,
guess no upset on this game
scarsdale 5-1
no one should underestimate this team especially with gluck in net
11-4-1 is surprising to alot of people (me included!), but the next three games will tell alot.
North Rockland,ETB and White Plains. 2 out of 3 wins makes me a believer…but hard to see Scarsdale beating CN, Mamo or Suffern to win D1. Playoffs, yes, First round win, maybe, but likely no further given seeding.Willows is truly a special talent… think of alex ovechkin… he’s a physical player who likes to hit, doesn’t mind getting hit, and is a natural scorer… thats like willows… its a rarity to have a player like that that is great in ALL aspects of the game…and get your facts right! willows was the only sophomore in the USA to be called for the USHL as a sophomore (2 years ago!)... hes had more National tryouts and such than most think… its just not publicized… so know before you write!
willows has been to plenty of those USA national tournaments and was called for the USHL when he was younger.. get your facts straight!
ionaprep,
just making a point…i will say this much
1st period of iona-step, iona’s jv would’ve given stepinac a run for their money as well
iona v was sluggish and honestly looked like they were going to lose in the 1st
they woke up big time in the 2nd and was a different team from there on…(if they play like the 2nd and 3rd in the playoffs, they will win the whole thing)
Iona JV could barely beat and tie a mamo jv, who as their best sophomores on varsity.
Iona JV is team overrated!!! (at least by the one or two bloggers who write these long love letters about them).
get your facts straight,
some fyi, molinaro was also called for a ushl tryout as well
Iona Prep JV barely beats and ties a mamo Jv with its best sophs on varsity.
I guess the mamo JV woul do pretty well against the Iona varsity too.
OK….Mamaroneck Fans…..You want to get something going. Even though this years Hockey isn’t even over…. Get Chaps…. Your great motivator to call Iona and get a varsity game scheduled for next year….... Bet you he hides again…. Because he will NEVER play IOna! End of story…
Challenge…would you like to schedule this game with or without your travel superstars?
I went back a few years and looked at some of the TOP players from our area, who were VERY good but were unable, (I Repeat), unable to even get a sniff at a D1 school. Tell me, which of these players is Hagen better than.
Just realize that All these players excelled in High School and Juniors for years! Which is something Hagen has not yet done…...... And Hagen can’t even come close to the players listed below when it comes to “PURE HOCKEY Talent!
T. Cabalbo, Mamaroneck
R.Ciciola, Mahopac
CJ Tozzo, New Rochelle
D.DelSonno, Iona Prep
Connolly, Fordham Prep
B. Connor, Mamaroneck
Josh Shuman, CN
Mike Holvig,CS
N. Clark, Suffern
M.Ruthberg, Suffern
Z.Salt, Suffern
C.King, Iona Prep
R. Encarnacao , White Plains
P.Sigona, White Plains
R. Rodeschini, John Jay
whats with all the hagen bashing…..what with comparing the gulls and the avalanche. sounds like some bitter new ro people still reeling from a 7 to 1 beating. the new ro star did nothing and hagen played fine. stop comparing the two. hagen is an excellent forward and an excellent skater…and prunesti is a strong player also. leave the travel crap out of it, noboby cares..and lets take it down a notch as far as knocking the players….but keep it comong the rest of this stuff is great!
That game will never TAKE PLACE…....... I know for a fact that Mamaroneck has been asked by Iona a number of times to setup a game and CHAPS has ignored the request.
Maybe with all the financial problems surrounding Athletic expenses, Mamaroneck might want to play a local game versus travelling upstate twice a year and playing those WEAK competitors. It also might be a good way of keeping some of their players out of jail in the future! LOL
nice work, they all bring something different to the game, all talented and hagen fits right in with all of them he has plenty of talent and his numbers prove it. how far you go is a matter of how much you commit to it. everyone gets off the elevator on a different floor…some just just dont no which floor is theirs.
nice list
well said, I just wrote on the subject in the other blog, you were much more succinct
hagen and willows are both excellent players and scoring machines. they both make the players around them better and im sure they are both the topic of the opposing coaches in the locker rooms before the games. thats called respect! hagen is an equally good kid off the ice as im sure willows is and many others. who knows how far either will go in hockey or how much they will persue it. its fun to compare them and exciting to watch them play….but the frustrated parents and jealous players should lighten up.
i think i’d schedule the game WITHOUT the travel superstars on account of the fact that the team plays better when they are not there lol.
I’ve seen Hagen and Willows both play during their matchup. Hagen is a fast skater with a super shot, who always seemed to be in the right place to put the puck away. Hagen is a fast, but he got flipped by one of North’s defensemen. Now willows can shoot and skate but what seperates him from Hagen is his unbelievable ability to hit. When kids get hit by Willows its undistinguishable from getting hit by a 6’0 200 pound player. I will say Hagen and Willows are equal in skating or shooting, but Willows is an over all better player due to the physicality of his play.
I would also like to add, as seen by foster etc, we have no idea where either player is going to go in the future. I’m sure both will pursue a higher level of play, but who knows.
Bobby Fatone was incredible last evening for Pac, Pelham gave him all they had in the 1st period and Fatone stopped everything. Fatone game last night was one for the memories.
whats with the jv stuff… stick to catering
just my thoughts !
Well said… well atleast the first 2 posts. Unless Willows is writing those posts flat out bashing Hagen, the writer to needs to get over some issues. And even if it is Willows its still pathetic.
One comment on Hagen and Prunesti, I’ve been around this season and I have seen each of them cash it in on some days. I don’t know if willows really is just stat driven or not (since i’m not him i cant say), but if that forces him to give 100% all the time, good for him.
for someone to say Hagan doesnt try in HS hockey is dumb. You should give 100% in anything that you do, and thats what willows does, the coach keeps him in he plays consistant all the time, hungry for points. Willows isnt about stats hes about giving 100% whether the scores 1-0 in the third or 14-0 in the third. thats how every players mindset should be.
Willow is a player…...Hagen isn’t even in the top five in forwards this year.
Willows should have been thrown out of the game against WP for his constant late hits and elbows …...
Since many people will never consider Hagen a great player and honestly believe many high school players are better than he is, here is a good compromise.
Alex Hagen is not the second or third best player in the section after Willows, but he is one of the three with the best potential for playing NCAA if he chooses to.
There, that leaves room for people to put Flory or whichever other player you want to put ahead of him at the end of the year when the all-westchester tesm comes out, but still acknowledges (spelling?) he has a better chance at playing in college.
On that thought, who is likely to be on Westchester’s first team. There are plenty of goalies to choose from, but the only players I think are locks are Mamo’s Hagan at D and Flory at forward. Lower league players don’t get picked (cept CN but they are rockland), but I can’t think of any other standouts in L1 or the CHSHL.
