Willows shatters record, but North falls to White Plains
-
- February
- 25
Clarkstown North senior Matt Willows scored with 4:50 remaining in the first period to set a new state record for points in a season. but the Rams allowed six unanswered goals and lost 6-4 to White Plains in a Division I sectional quarterfinal at Brewster Ice Arena.
Willows had three goals and an assist to finish with 138 points. Byran Gitler of Scardale had the old mark of 134, set in the ‘03-’04 season. Willows also finished with 87 goals, breaking Gitler’s record for goals in a season by seven.
Steve McCarrick had a goal and four assists for the Tigers, who will face the winner of tonight’s Suffern-New Rochelle game on Friday.

White Plains Rules…..........
congrats White Plains..
suffern updates?
any updates on mamo vs nr and nr vs suffern?
Congratulations to White Plains. 6 unanswered goals? WOW !!
I guess Brewster rink was good for the Tigers. Maybe they’ll move out of Ebersole and play all their games up north next season
6 unanswered goals, what happened CN? was looking forward to a Suffern-CN matchup.
i have a bad feeling abt mamo
CONGRATULATIONS TIGERS!!!!! GREAT GAME, NOW THAT”S THE WAY TO RALLY!!!!!!
Suffern or Mamk updates?
Although I have nothing against the CN players, this loss to White Plains could not have happened to a more appropriate coach. As a “supposed” role model, this CN coach had no idea how to act like a professional on and off the ice. to run two players 35-40 minutes per game without playing 2nd and 3rd line players in 8 goal blowouts during the season finally caught up to him in the form of Karma. I’m going to enjoy seeing how awful his team is next season without Willows, Shuman, and McIndoe. Truly a classless person. I do not know how the parents do not complain about what he stands for.
Congrats White Plains, I am glad that loser coach is out of the playoffs in probably his only chance to actually win for the next five years.
Classless is posting an anonymous blog ripping a coach.
Maybe CN and ETB can meet up in the Underachievers Out Bracket Tournament.
Nice to see a TEAM advance to the semi finals. Congrats to White Plains.
Maybe an all Tiger Final @ West Point ??
Nothing makes me happier….sounds like someone close to the CN program…a parent maybe? No need to get personal on the guy
It just rubbed off from watching the way CN coaches.
Mamo update?
where did our Suff update guy go to??? it must be over
Just want to say congratulations to the 3 CN seniors – Matt, Jake and Chris – and all the CN players for a great season!!!! I remember White Plains always being a threat in the playoffs over the years no matter who they played. Good luck to the three captains in your future endeavors!
Nothing makes you happier than watching 7 kids hockey careers ending possibly forever? These kids worked hard their entire life to reach this point and nothing makes you happier for them to lose? They don’t pick the coach, they don’t call the line changes, they work hard and try to win.
I think we all know, your not going to go far in the playoffs skating one line, by the 3rd period your definitely going to run out of gas. If coaches don’t make adjustments prior to playoffs don’t expect them to try something new during them.
Suffern 7-1 final
First year in league 1 lost only 5 games. One each to Suffern Mamaroneck and Mahopac and two losses to Pelham. An excellent first year in the league. A huge win tonight and they are right in it!
Suffern / WP semi’s…!
I would think Suffern would rather play WP than CN, regular season losses is a nice motivation.
any mamo updates…
Congratulations to Matt for setting the scoring record. Great job. As well as congrats to Jake for setting the assist record. It was a great season.
6-2 Mamaroneck 3 minutes left
any other scores
i bet a ton of players could post a league record if they played 40 minutes a game.
i remember when the season started, i said “white plains, section one champs this year”.....
A very well played game on both teams, the CN players and parents are very Classy in my book, I sat with a few of them, and enjoyed a great conversation with them. Willows did have a great game, have to give it up to the WP goalie, he stepped it up and made some good saves, and the WP defense, down two, killed the penalty.
Just a note JN, I noticed your photog left before the game ended, I would believe your lead Art on this game should have something of white plains in it.
Mamo – NR final score???
I wouldn’t hang the banner yet, two games to go.
i think north played a great game but white plains is just clutch
Isn’t it ironic that CN lost to WP who has the old CN coach as an assistant coach. Must be satifying for him to beat that particular taem in the playoffs.
Any updates on LP/Mahopac game?
im not hanging any banner, but dubset is lookin SHARPPPPPPP
CONGRATS WHITE PLAINS GREAT VICTORY 6 UNANSWERED WOW
Congrats to Clarkstown North on a great season
Congrats to Willows on making history WOW
To coach classless, Life has a way of balancing itself out.
For every team you beat into the ground with no sense of sportsmenship for what ever reason, you finally got what you deserved. The funny thing is you probably think you should get Coach of the year.Sorry Section 1 may not agree or about 10000 others. Better luck next year if your still a coach.
GoodLuck
I heard Shuman had 4 assists, so that would bring his assists to 69. Therefore breaking the state record. Congratulations to Matt and Jake for setting new state records. And to the CN team, Congrats on a great Season! You made us all proud!
any predictions for the white plains suffern game ?
To the North Senior Captains – Matt, Jake and Chris – you are all TREMENDOUS PLAYERS – it was fun following the team this season and in years past. You all had GREAT careers at CN, all of you!!! And congrats on the records, which should last a long, long time!
Nothing to be ashamed of CN! GREAT SEASON! you have made us proud!!! Best of luck in all future endeavors.
Hats off to White Plains, best of luck against Suffern, which should be a great game.
I think WP has a shot after all they did beat them in the regular season, but we all know how hard it is to beat a team twice, especially if its in the playoffs, also consider they are Suffern and have had more experience in big games than any other Section 1 team. Should be an interesting game.
Congratulations to Matt and Jake on there great accomplishments. Good luck to the remaining teams.
-This is CN signing off. Stay Classy Lohud.
Mamk final score?
so will the entire suffern roster come down with the clap or plague tonight? what will be their excuse with a loss to WP?
would have been great to see another CN vs. suffern game but wp vs. suff should be just as good…especially since they both have a loss against each other to avenge from this season…
hard to believe north lost. hard to believe
please Suffern should win. White Plains won a huge game tonight. The last time White Plains beat Suffern a few weeks ago it was the first time White Plains ever beat them. Suffern had a bunch of guys out of the lineup. Thisis also playoff hockey where Suffern thrives
Mamk won 7-2 over nr
Thank god suffern had home ice advantage, were very motivated and had big game experience, or they may have not been able to pull it out. In all seriousness, congrats to NewRoc, you played hard all the way to the end and showed a lot of class with the loss. It would not have been unusual for a team in that position to start getting dirty. Shows a lot of character, you should be proud of your season. Good luck to all the seniors in whatever you do in the future. Now it is time for payback against WP. This time you will see Suffern at full strength and the result will be a lot different then last time.
DUBSET ALL DAY EVERYDAY BABY!!!
Mamo final: 7-2 with 51 shots on goal. NR goalie
made it interesting through 2 periods.
SCORE: Mamk 7 – North Rockland – 2
SUMMARY: Much, much more dramatic then the score might indicate. Mamaroneck roared off to an early goal lead but, NR took the lead with back to back scores in under a minute. With half of the game gone, Mamk was down 2-1. However, after this, Mamk stormed back with a stunning flurry of their own, with two goals in another minute. The second ended at 3-2. The third period had two or so nice chances for NR, but was mostly all Mamk. They piled on four goals, out of a bunch of solid chances, and yet somehow managed to be penalized constantly throughout the period. But Mamk never let up, and made it look convincing.
OBSERVATIONS: See, the thing with Mamaroneck is that they have probably the most talent in the section, and they know it. To Mamaroneck fans and players, there is no doubt of this quality. And, they’re mostly right. But they seemingly have a tendency to once in a while come on too relaxed, and too self-important. And that’s what it takes for solid teams like NR to take every advantage and stick it to them. In fact, I mentioned this exact phenomenon last week…!
Also, MVP of the game was probably #87 for Mamk. He was always in the middle of the action, and made countless stellar plays. The Mamk goalie was strong, when he was tested.
NR played very very well for two quarters, before they seemed worn down by Mamk’s depth and speed. The NR goalie had some excellent stops to start the game, but in the third period made a pair of colossal blunders in positioning that cost his team two goals. No NR player really stood out, but their overall quality was impressive. They gave as good as they got on defense for a while, and won a good deal of 1 on 1 match-ups. Excellent stick handling.
What was the score after the second period in the CN/WP game? Did the two run out of gas in the third? Hard to believe they let up 6 unanswered goals, especially being up 4-0! Anyone at the game care to give the low down of the game and what happened?
Thats a lot of shots…
Would someone be so kind to post the link of that Bracketmaker for Div1 / Div2.

Your right icehole, whether you agree with how he coached or not, he did everything he could for those kids, and was treated very poorly by North at the end. If they were going to get rid of him, than do it right away, he was setting up for this season when they pulled the rug out from under him. One of the reasons MacIndoe got All-State last year (Which he indeed did deserve last year) was that the coach was up at the state tournaments and promoted Mac.
Not to take anything away from WP They have no weakness, they have big forecheckers in Alteri and McCarick (who remember were suspended in the first 3-1 Suffern loss), they have a star in the making in Broderick, they have maybe the highest skilled D-man in Sec 1 in McGee, there goaltender has been good, they are loaded….but Willows and Mac had 2 good legs between them, everyone knows it takes 1 full year from the injury to recover from an ACL. And unless Willows leg normally shakes when he skates, and unless he normally falls down with no one on him, then he is not 100% either.
I know Mac is smart and wants school, but if there was ever a case for a goalie to play another year and get his stock up, this is it. It’s one year of sacrafice for 4 of elation.
To get back on topic though, its Human nature, imagine how the old North coach is going to feel walking into C. North school tommorrow morning. If it were me, I would walk into the AD office and drop off some tickets to the next game.
The WP/CN game was played well by both. The first period WP was off, letting #9 & #26 get off the shots. WP goalie was a little off in the first, a couple of rebounds went in but from once he got #9 lined up…he made the stops, ALL OF THEM! Playing the whole game took a toll on #9 & #26. WP depth hurt CN. Several WP players scored. Congrats to WP goalie….great game MIKE!!!! You all make us proud!!!GO WHITE PLAINS!!!!
I also want to say congratulations to #9 & #26 on your records.
Your a star, thanks for the brackets.
any updates on mahopac lakeland?
Oh, I have to say at Hommocks. When they announced the WP-CN final… people were stunned.
Hey El Guapo,
How did Mamaroneck look? Was the scoring spread out?
Lakeland and ” pac” are going into OT as we speak
Ta-Da,
Weak to begin with. In the third they piled it on. I mean, the third was just dominant. If Mamk learns to come out with guns blazing each time, then they’re going to roll. If they come out flat again, they’re in upset territory.

mamk didn’t really come out flat, i mean they had 21 shots on goal after the first period to North Rocklands 5 shots…The North Rockland goalie was very good in the first half of the game but mamk proved to be alot stronger and showed it in the third
Tell the clarkstown north coach that the finals are at West Point and to get there early and oh by the way bring $10.00 to get in.
Hockey Fan,
You’re right to a point, but the Mamk scorer has always been shot-happy, and Mamk was taking a lot of dumb shots – shots for the sake of taking the shot – they shined with skating and puck movement in the third.
nothing makes me happier
You and anyone who agrees with your comments are total morons.
Grow up! Great season CN. Great win WP. You are anonymously classless.
pac/ lakeland game.. any update??
Watching the CN/WP game from the stands before my game, i have to say that both teams were obviously trying as hard as anything. But it seemed to me as well that WP just wanted it that much more. How can a team with possibly the best kid in the state like willows allow 6 unanswered goals??(granted, they were all very well done goals, none were weak). they were dominating in the first period, completely shutting WP out and on the border to knocking them out totally. But WP’s comeback was perhaps the greatest i have ever seen.
predictions for the suffern/WP game—i believe WP will beat them, although the game will most defiantly be close
screw you harold!
always freaking under-estimating WP, ur predictions for them suck!!
Number 33 on l/p kyle park rifled the pike from the corner at HIS OWN NET perelle picks up the rebound pac wins 6-5
really?
Kudos to WP. Most teams would have packed it in falling behind 4-0. I don’t recall a top ranked team getting knocked off when they were up by such a large margin.Does anyone recall such a dramatic swing in a section one playoff game like this from past years?
I’d like to say Clarkstown North played a good, solid, team game but I can’t. Good game Willows, and Shuman… played your balls off
Dubbsett all day baby
pac won 6-5 in overtime…anyone know why perelle didn’t play until very late in the game?
by the way Lakeland/Panas is a VERY VERY good team, and would compete well in the upper leagues
Congrats to Matt and Jake on their records!
COGRATS to Clarkstown North COACH for a ranked team to blow a 4-0 lead in the playoffs. THIS MIGHT BE A RECORD TOO!!!
I know I did they would sell out in 5 minutes
perelle took a 4min and 11 and 1/2 for cross checkig some kid in the face
perelle was sent off the ice in the 1st for having blood on his jersey only to return wearing number 2 a few shifts latter obvisouly this is not allowed how did the refs let this happen? you can’t make changes to the roster mid game like that?????? can you
Congrats Coach Lynch… Revenge is a dish best served cold.
The White Plains win does not shock me. WHite Plains is a TEAM. Their coaches developed both the skilled and less skilled players all season and win or lose they always kept proper perspective. White Plains ran full lines while CN ran 1 and a half lines the whole game and in the 3rd they were skating in quicksand.
So I am sure many league 2 teams that got pounded on are very happy about the CN loss, the world is round and things have a way of coming back to haunt. Most people thought next year was when they would get their come uppance, but it wound up being this year.
Congrats to WP on their most satisfying win in a long long time.

Questionable
It had to be OK’d by L/P or it would not have happended, check with them
GO PAC
the L/P coaches did indeed know about it. perrelly cut his lip and needed to get another jersey.
and is was 4 minutes boarding, 7 1/2 misconduct, total 11 1/2.
So with all those state records North has, they can now watch the frozen four.
bet mama shuman aint happy tonite. wwwwaaaaaaaaaaa
As a Suffern player I would like to take this time to congradulate North on their memorable season. With experiences from last season I know what it feels like to have that great of a season suddenly end unexpectingly. You guys gave us one hell of a game a few weeks ago and should be proud of the season you had representing Section 1 proudly. I would also like to congradulate Matt and Jake on their record breaking seasons. You guys worked hard throughout your hockey careers and deserved that type of success 100%. It’s been a pleasure playing against you guys over the years throughout my Suffern career. Good luck in your futures.
Suffern Player – extremely classy statement, from a class player and from a class program. i am a CN fan, but i will always respect Suffern’s players/organization. and it is very clear and evident that the suffern and CN players are all friends and respect one another, especially this year’s players. Suffern is a great team that shows all class, as opposed to some select Westchester teams that are great teams as well, but show very little class.
best of luck against WP on friday suffern.
El estudiante,
Idk what game you were watching but NR’s goalie kept them in the game, he had several point blank and multiple saves, it was clear everyone on NR was tired by the 2nd half of the 3rd goalie included the kid made 45 saves against the number 3 team in the state. BTW i would have loved to see an upset here, Questionable calls, North Rockland really did give Mamo a scare in my opinion, keeping it tight the most of the game, NR showed this season they could play with anyone in the state but not necessarily beat everyone
great job raiders, good luck tigers
whoever said wp wanted it more was rite. it looked like everyone except willows and shuman gave up. and coach lynch doesnt deserve any credit. i talked to this guy once and he should be coaching mites.. Maybe..
“Coaching! Coaching!, Coaching!” The CN/WP game was a clinic on what not to do as coach’s and what to do as coach’s. Caulk it up for a learning experiance for CN.
In my opinion CN’s weak schedule came back to haunt them. They were a lot players that were on this years team who packed it in last year and did not play (got hurt and never returned or just never came out for the team) – perhaps that would have been to big of a burden to do with Matt Willows gone. I found that to be a weakness in the character and maturity of those young men. Fortunately they are young and are still maturing and have a learned an important lesson about pushing and working through the challenging times as well as enjoying the good times – one rarely happens without the other. If CN had played a league 1 schedule this year I truly believe they would have been better prepared for the playoffs.
*The assist record belongs to Joe Herman – Harold go back and look up the stats from the 02-03 season. Joe was a great player who played hockey for all right reasons. He scored the big goals when it counted and he never once abandoned his team.
I don’t think it hurt them as much as they weren’t nearly as good as people thought. While Willows is one of the best players I have ever seen he would not have scored 87 goals this year if he played Mama twice, Suffern twice, Pelham twice as well as several upstate teams like Greece, Massena, West Genne etc. Beating up on league 2 and 3 teams and having willows and schuman scoring the 10th, 11th and 12th goal is probably the reason many are so happy they lost. You just don’t have your top guns out on the ice on a power play with 2 minutes left in a 8-1 game and that was something that was regular in every north game this year. I do not fault the kids at all for this, this was the coach’s decision and maybe he learned a little something this year. I don’t believe in karma or any of that BS but this one makes me think.
Sitting and watching the CN-WP almost brought me to throwing up. As a CN fan I sat there wondering when our coach was going to make some ‘in-game’ adjustments…4-2 nothing..4-3..”come on..you have to do something now”...nothing!!! zip!!!! nada!!! nyet!!! nill!!! nunka!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? 4-4 and not a hint of an adjustment.
5-4 and the fans are furious!! What is going on??? I fully believe the coach took the apple..he choked..didn’t have a clue what to do when WP express started rolling. To say i’m shocked would be an understatement. You give any coach in the section or the state for that matter a Willows & Shuman and you will win close to 20 games. This coach is clueless and it doesn’t bode well for our program. We weren’t expecting a Scottie Bowman type performance behind the bench but we also were not expecting a Scottie Pippen coaching job. It’s going to be a long dark stretch for the North program
Perhaps the most underrated and under appreciated coach in all of section 1 sports is Howie Ruebenstien. He does a great job every year with his WP hockey and after losing a ton of seniors last season he really did great job of molding this years squad into a great TEAM. Without a doubt this seasons coach of the year. Congrats on a very deserving and well earned victory. Lets keep the tiger express running right through Sport O on Friday night.
I chuckle at all the bravado on this site. WP beats CN and here it comes, We’ll beat Suff, we did it once talk. I read one post that said “I predicted at the beginning of the season that WP will be section champs” It’s not only WP fans by any means. I believe you can throw the Suff loss to WP out. They were missing half the team. Someone posted awhile back that if they were WP, I wouldn’t want to face Suff again and I agree. If Suff is on their game and I’m sure a playoff at Sporto will bring out the best, then WP won’t beat Suff. SUFF 4 WP 1. Harold please pick WP in an upset, that will lock it up for Suff.
CN Perspective, you are 100% dead on in your analysis. And I will add, that the only real All Star on the CN Team is Chris McIndoe, who didn’t let any of his team mates down….NEVER!
what were shots on goal totals for WP vs. CN and MMK Vs. NR?
“Go to the Tap” you could not be more correct Chris McIndoe is a great athlete but more important a great Man. I would be proud to have been a part of any team he was on.
Perhaps too much was expected of the CN coach. But great coaches are not just born, they usually tutelage under some other great coaches.
When the season began, I thought it was the elder Holvig, who would be assisting the young coach, and though that was brilliant. But Coach Trust and Holvig are both young and will improve.
The previous Coach Lynch experience shows the maturation needed for a coach to become better. He did a commendable job under trying circumstances, was very commited to the program, and probably did some things he should not have done in retrospect.
He’ll be a better coach for that experience and now working under the White Plains coach, who also has taken some bullets over the years, he’ll see a successful program run perhaps a little differently than he would have. Coach Lynch should be a better head coach when some team snaps him up.
Kudos, also to the White Plains coach, his philosophy of getting all the kids involved, some concessions to travel players (remember Rui and Sigona last year) and his personal integrity (which I have only been told about) has brought him a very nice moment.
No rush to judgement on the young CN coaching staff. Let’s see what they take from this years experience.
One thing Rockland County coaches need to do immediately is to reverse the trend of the best, and now even average players, going to New Jersey private schools St. Joseph’s and Don Bosco.
Austensibly, this is being done for “academics” not hockey, but all rockland public schools with hockey programs are good academic schools. At elast that’s my personal opinion.
These varsity coaches have to make a middle school connection with the players and their families, or just don’t assume they’ll be at the tryout in their freshmen year.
This does not apply to Suffern, which never losses freshman to private schools.
In the end, CN did not have the quality depth that WP, Suffern and Mamo has. Replace CN’s 2nd line with either WP or Mamo’s 2nd line, and CN probably wins the section. Willows and Shuman couldn’t do it all. That’ what separates the perennial League 1 powerhouse team from a very good League 2 team – depth.
Again, kudos to WP, and great season CN, and best of luck to the Seniors in all future endeavors!
Hey New City,
You can blame the coaches all you want. It is the players that play the game. New City parents will probably get this guy fired now and expect Jacque LeMaire to take over the program (they won’t even get Jacque LeStrap). A lot of the New City parents seem miserable, and probably kissed the coaches butt all year, and now that the team (not just the coach) failed in the playoffs, they will turn tail and either ignore him or go behind his back and try and get him fired too. That is the New City way. Their behavior at yesterdays game was indicative of the type of people they truly are.
You stay classy Clarks North
Ron Burgundy,
I personnally saw 2 CN parents go over and congradulate Coach Lynch after the game. I’m not sure what behavior you are talking about but what counts is that the CN players acknowledged the W/P team on what a great game they played.
Here is an interesting stat – CN played against four league one teams this season. One of CN’s “superstars” had 0 goals in all four combined games (including last night). Congrats on your league 2 scoring accomplishments.
Congratulations WP! Once again, a great effort by the entire team. Tigers, you have proved that when everyone shows up and plays their game for 3 periods, you are as good as anyone. Most teams would have packed it in after being down 4-0, but you boys showed that you are as tough mentally as you are physically. Kudos to Coach Rubenstein for playing every player every game during the season. You teach our boys to believe in themselves and their teammates and they showed that they do last night. Individual players could be recognized for a job well done, but it truly was a game won by the entire team. No matter what happens on Friday night, Tigers – you have made us proud.
What were the stats for the other “superstar” against those league one teams?
“I do not fault the kids at all for this, this was the coach’s decision and maybe he learned a little something this year. I don’t believe in karma or any of that BS but this one makes me think.”
Part of the deal maybeeee?
Anybody know where the CN seniors are going to college?
I believe Shuman is going to prep school. Or was that supposed to be this year – I believe that was one of the plethora of excuses his parents used last year when he did not play for CN – he needed to focus on getting stronger for prep school. Good choice!
Hockey Fan,
If CN would have stayed with the same second liners:
cohen, kapnik, vella as they did all season instead of moving a forward back to defense maybe there would have been a different outcome. That second line matches with anyone.
Panic, panic, panic! you can’t coach to panic. If it ain’t broke… don’t fix it!
willows is going to ushl and shuman is too i believe. and besides dont even start on last year. who wants to play for lynch, the guy is a psycho who thinks he knows what he is talking about. but who cares this is highschoool hockey not d1 college or even juniors so get overyourselves. its the worst hockey you can possibly play.
Nice dig at the former coach. Can’t imagine the filth you would be saying if you had actually won. There seems to be tinge of animosity towards the former CN coach – why don’t you just come out and blame the loss on him.
You stay classy CN!
Having watched both players play this year I believe that Willows has the ability to play and might even get drafted into the USHL but Shuman, while i think he posses the heart and hockey intelligence to play at that level, I don’t think his talent level is high enough to compete in the USHL. Hope he can he can prove me wrong and make section 1 proud.
