Division II quarterfinals

February
26

The six top Division II teams finally get a chance to play in the postseason. Will the seedings hold like in Division I? Here’s a glimpse at the matchups:

No. 1 Rye vs. No. 8 Pawling, 8 p.m. at Playland: Pawling has won 5 of 6 and actually has some nice players behind Matt Burdick, so I doubt it will get worn out by playing against a deep team like Rye. It also pulled the upset in this round against Pelham two years ago. But Rye is also playing extremely well, and the two-time defending champions have too many talented, disciplined players to lose this early. Rye 3-1.

No. 2 Pelham vs. No. 7 Somers/North Salem, 7 p.m. at Ice Hutch: Somers/North Salem has shown it can beat a League 1 team in its win over Mahopac, but Pelham is 4-4 against the Division I semifinalists, with wins over Mahopac, White Plains and Suffern. Joe Marasco can be a dominant player, but no player has been as dominant as Marc Flory recently — in a 10-game span against the best competition (League 1, Clarkstown North and Massena), he has accounted for 20 of Pelham’s 31 goals. In other words, I like Somers/North Salem, but Pelham is a little better in every category. Pelham 5-2.

No. 3 John Jay vs. No. 6 Ossining, 8:45 p.m. at Brewster: It was only two years ago that Ossining won the League 3 title, and then gave eventual champ Rye its toughest game of the playoffs in the quarters before losing 3-2. Ossining (19-2-2) has a much more favorable matchup this time, but John Jay’s 4-19-2 record is deceiving — a lot of losses have come against teams like Suffern and Mamaroneck and White Plains. The Indians are a respectable 3-4 against Division II opponents, getting swept by Rye and Pelham but beating Brewster (twice) and Yorktown, and I’m sure their relishing the clean slate that the playoffs provide. I like Ossining a little more in all three phases, but I think it will be closer than the records indicate. Ossining 4-3.

No. 4 Brewster vs. No. 5 Yorktown, 6:45 p.m. at Brewster: Yorktown won this game in double OT last year, but the ‘Huskers had won 9 of 11 before that, while this year’s team has lost six in a row and barely made it into the playoffs thanks to some smart non-league scheduling (hello, Nyack tournament). Meanwhile, Brewster posted some impressive wins recently (Scarsdale twice, ETB) and has a dynamic duo in Mike Miller (62 points) and Ian Fleming (53). This is the only game that will be a rematch from the regular season — the teams tied 2-2 in overtime and then Brewster won 7-2. I’ll take something in between. Brewster 6-3.

  1. player

I do not believe Brewster will beat Yorktown by that much of a margin if they win at all. They are down 2 players, 1 to a season ending concussion and another to a fighting suspension. The rest of the predictions sound pretty good but I do believe you will see a big upset in one of tonight’s games (Pawling v. Rye or S/NS v. Pelham)

  2. tonight

Upsets are always possible. I think Pelham and Ryes schedule and teams they play are much tougher than the ones Pawling and Somers play. That matters

  3. Pawling

Pawling playing Rye tonight. Rye is used to these important games. Burdick could be the difference

  4. player

that is very true, Rye is a team with alot of depth, Pawling has great goaltending and strong players upfront with a very young defense, Pelham really has only 1 very strong line but have many consistent players, and S/NS has a few good players and a big drop off after that but they play usually a physical game. Anything can happen on any given night and everybody matches up differently every game.

  5. fanotgame

All these games look pretty good tonite, especially if Brewster is a bit undermanned as one blogger suggests. Burdick and Delaverne against Rye’s depth. Marasco vs. Flory. Top League Three team Ossining vs. bottom League One team Jay and Brewster vs. Yorktown for the 6th time in the past 2 seasons. Lets hope for some good, hard fought games. I won’t predict the game my Garnets play in- would like to see it go as Harold predicts, though. The other three I see as Pelham over SNS 4-2, the O wins 5-2 and Brewster gets by Yorktown 5-4.

  6. think about it

What do you think will happen with the Ossining vs john jay game tonight? easy game for ossining or no?

  7. fanotgame

think about it- I don’t think any of these games will be easy for anyone. It is the playoffs, seniors looking at elimination, ect. Plan for some good battles.

  8. oh no

Jay will be no match for Ossining. Yorktown has a chance depending on who shows up for Brewster and who is in goal for both teams.

  9. bandit

    oh no
if u remember correctly ossining and jj tied 3-3 in a preseason scrimmage
ossining tied it up with 10 seconds left on an own goal by jj
    jj was playing 4 lines

    jj 4 o 2

  10. think about it

bandit- ossining out plan jj all game and ossining was missing some players

  11. ronald mcdonald

ossining rolled 5 lines the whole john jay scrimmage, and out played them…

  12. BIG O, little o

Ossining rolled 5 lines 6d in that scrimmage and played everyone the whole time, as did JJ. That’s what it was, a scrimmage. You can’t tie a scrimmage because there is no score, especially when the goals come by top line players against 4th and 5th liners. This one has the potential to be tight, but at any moment could turn into a blowout depending on what Ossining team and what Jay team show up.

By the way, Rolle didn’t scalp the Indian name from Jay yet? How surprising.

  13. dylan

does anyone know the pelham score

  14. alex

Pelham won 6-4. Flory with a hatrick and Mamone with the two others

  15. alex

sorry. 7-4. Flory scored an empty netter

  16. Hockey Lover

4-0 Ossining. JJ was no match for Ossining. Ossining outplayed them in every which way. JJ were out hit, out shot, out skilled, etc…
