Ice hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley with Harold Gutmann

Info on West Point

February
26

Section 1 chairman John Orlando has sent out some more information about Tate Rink, the site of Sunday’s Division I and Division II championship games:

West Point is one of the most beautiful colleges in the country. Tate Rink is the finest rink on the East Coast. Take advantage of this event by coming early and touring the Military Academy. It is a history lesson in itself and in these troubled times one can reflect about all the great men and women who have graduated from West Point who are keeping our country free and safe.

You will need a picture ID to gain access to the grounds (16 and over). A highly trained security staff will allow you to pass rather quickly and a more than 15 minute wait will be highly unusual.

If you are traveling north on Route 9W there are two gates you can use:

Thayer Gate: Take the right exit after the car wash and proceed through the Village of Highland Falls to the gate. If you want to go to the museum it is before the gate.

Stony Lonesome Gate: Proceed past the first exit off 9W, go up the hill and take the next exit. This gate gives you direct access to the rink, which is right next to the football stadium.

There is plenty of parking in the lot directly above the rink. Handicapped parking is on the road right next to the rink.

Tickets will cost $10.00 for the double header. No passes will be honored. Division 1 at 4 PM. Division 2 approximately 630 PM.

There is plenty of seating and all the seats have a great view. It is not cold in the rink so you can watch in comfort. No outside food will be allowed but they have a very good snack bar setup. They also have a souvenir stand that will be open. We are asking that the home team fans sit in the sections behind the teams and the visitors opposite the teams. Signs will direct you. No signs only school banners allowed. No noise makers of any kind are allowed.

This is going to be a great day and hopefully a day that Section 1 hockey will show its stuff. The teams that are still left in the tournament are highly skilled and promise to put on a great event. Let’s Fill the Place.

  1. Super Job

Congrats to Coach Orlando and Section 1 hockey. This is a long time coming. Basketball has its county center, hockey now has a true venue to showcase its sport.

Very very well done and best of luck to the teams that get there. It will certainly be an experience no one will forget.

    Good Job!

This is a fantastic facility, but here is a question for Mr. Orlando to ask the Tate Rink managers. Anyone who has played at Tate knows there are only two, yes, two locker rooms. (Huge lack of foresight on the part of the architects and designers). What will happen to the Division II players that play after the Div. I final? I’m sure they will arrive around game time for the Div I game. Where will they dress?

  3. While not ideal...

My son’s team have played there often over the years. What I saw that worked was after the first team got dressed, the put their clothes in their hockey bags and those bags were piled into a corner. The second team then can use the locker room to get dressed (after the ice cut between periods 2 and 3). When the first game ends, the second teams vacate the space (piling their bags with clothes in another corner). The teams from the first game then use the locker room to get out of their gear. Not ideal, and will cause the game 2 folks to stand in the hall ways while the ice is cut between games, but not totally unworkable. You would think the Army would have designed a better facility (locker room wise).

Of course, all hell breaks loose if game 1 goes into overtime, and there is an ice cut between the third period and overtime, or subsequent periods.

    hockeyy,
John told me that there will be locker rooms for all four teams. Home teams will dress next to the basketball court and visitors will dress in the locker rooms behind the rink.

  5. hockeyy

Great! I couldn’t imagine how they were going to work out that nightmare. The basket ball court locker room must be the Army team locker room(?). Never had access to one in that area of the arena.

    Thanks for checking.

This sounds like a huge treat for any hockey player, parent or fan. Let’s let go of any obstacles that may present themselves, locker rooms, security, etc, and let’s revel in the success of these kids who have worked and played hard to get to this point and are playing in this amazing venue. Keep it all about them tonight and there is no chance that anyone will have a bad experience. Win or lose these kids are bringing everything they have and only one team can win on the scoreboard, but let’s face it, to get to this point, they are all winners. I have NO stake in this – am from LI and won’t be there tonight but wish you all the best of luck, especially any seniors, enjoy the moment, regardless of the outcome. You are all stars!

  7. Mountie Style

    harold

do we know yet if lohud will be broadcasting the game?

  8. Hockey Fan

    Harold,
to add on to mountie style will either of tomorrows semi finals be broadcasted?

  9. Tailgate

Can fans tailgate in the parking lot like they do for Army football games?

  10. Theyre GRRRRRREAT

Suffern/WP is going to be insane. I say it is a coin flip. White Plains offense vs. Sufferns defense. I say White Plains rides off their momentum and wins in double OT. 3-2. I would be shocked if either team wins by more than 2. GO WHITE PLAINS.
Mamaroneck beat Mahopac handily twice, 7-2 and 5-0 I think. Mahopac will need a bounce here or there to win this game. Mamaroneck should win this, but if Mahopac scores first it could be interesting. Once Mamaroneck gets a 2 goal lead in this game it is good night Irene. Mamaroneck 5 Mahopac 2.
It is going to be a Tiger vs. Tiger Championship!!!!!

  19. suffern

5-2 to pelham last heard in second

  20. suffern

    Pelham wins

  21. tailgater

Why isn’t it appropriate to tailgate. As long as everyone behaves I say go have fun and enjoy it might be the only time you’ll have the chance. Just don’t get wasted and make a fool out of yourself. My kid isn’t playing their but I know I would want to have a good time together with the other fans. If you lose you don’t much feel like celebrating so celebrate that your team got there.

  28. press

This is a hockey blog about high school hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley. This string is about Section One playoffs. What is the relevance of an awards ceremony at a catholic high school in Long Island??? GEEZ, Someone really wants some press.

  29. PuckFan

Tate Arena is a wonderful place to watch a game. As your sons take the ice please remind them of the tradition and honor of those who have played and currently use that sheet of ice. It takes an amazing young person to be a student at any of the military academies. And God Bless them, that they make that decision to the benefit of all of us! Best of luck to all the teams tonight and on Sunday. GO PAC!

  30. hockey09

    press –
