February

Third-seeded White Plains held on for a 3-0 win over second-seeded Suffern tonight in the Section 1 Division I semifinals at Sport-O-Rama in Monsey.

The Tigers will now play top-seeded Mamaroneck in the final on Sunday at 4 p.m. at West Point.

Mike Pavarini enjoyed a stellar outing in goal for White Plains, making 35 saves.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Aaron Klimchuk with three minutes left in the period, assisted by Steve McCarick and Dan Broderick.

Broderick then scored 36 seconds into third period. Ryan McGee added an empty net goal.

  2. sam K.

GO WHITE PLAINS Way to go Mike, wish I were there!

  3. WEST CHEST

how many shots did white plains have?

  4. SUFFERN

great game both teams! really exciting to watch. congrats and good luck white plains and mamaorneck. Suffern, hold your heads high, very few people thought you could accomplish what you did this year!!

  5. ALL TIGERS

Tigers vs Tigers. Too late to move the game to Playland????

  6. oldtiger

Good luck WP against Mamaroneck.I never liked playing against them…always cocky and always average,at least suffern kids would joke with you, however they were also beating us 12-0 by that point usually.Anyway…again GREAT JOB WP!!Best of Luck.

  7. Sufferrin

what do I do with those warm blankets i bought for Utica now?

  8. Suffern

Too bad the White Plains players are as classless as the Mamaroneck players and felt the need to mock the Suffern fans. Way to go Suffern for sticking up for your fans.

  9. jb

enough about your angels from suffern already

  10. sam K.

Let it go, white plains won fair and square, no excues. WP and Mamaroneck should be great, classic rivals, two good teams, wish it were being played at Playland. Would have been a whole lot easier for both teams.

  11. icedad

    Suffern:

After the numerous postings I’ve read this season from
various individuals identifying themselves as Suffern fans/supporters etc degrading opposing teams and players you should apply the term ‘classless’ where it really belongs.

  12. Coach

Im sure it was decided prior to the season, but its kinda silly for the game to be played in WEst POint, when both teams are nearly IDENTICAL distances from Playland!

I guess section 1 is really making a conscious effort to save $$$$ by making teams travel 1hour plus to a game rather then 10minutes.

  13. Mistake

Hey Suffern, I’m not a WP person or a Suffern hater but the Suffern students probably just got back a taste of what they give.

  14. ice

who cares if it is easier? now it becomes a major event.

  15. Ironic

It just goes to show you the cream eventually rises to the top. At the end of the day the 2 best teams are in the finals. White Plains is stacked this year, they have power fowards, goal scores, playmakers, goaltending, a quality coach, hard workers, depth, and seniors who lead the way, for all the rest of the teams, there is no shame or excuses, the rest were simply not good enough. For all those teams who fell, they lacked one or more of the 8 attributes I just listed. What other team can be without arguably their 2 best players and only lose to Suffern 3-1? Maybe Mamo? thats it. Either one of these teams will be a hand full upstate, good luck guys, go get em!!

  16. Ta-Da

I dont think these teams care where the game is played or what distance it is away from their home towns. This is a huge rivalry that has gone back 30 years. It should be a great game! I guess Mamaroneck could pick the White Plains team up and car pool up to the Point if distance/ $ was an issue…

    Good luck to both teams!

  17. CN Alumni/Fan

just wanted to say congrats to suffern on a great season. after losing so much from last year, they came back and had a tremendous year – nothing to be ashamed of. the 3 senior captains – hiller, hill and mccarron – are all great players and 100% class acts. best of luck to all the seniors on future endeavors.

  18. Suffern Fan

what did the suffern students ever do wrong? Just wondering

  19. Haha

SUFFERING the loss to white plains. CONGRATS WHITE PLAINS YOU DESERVE IT!!!!!!!!!

  20. Mighty mighty bosstone

Hey, white plains and mamaroneck earned it. Mamaroneck with their regular season championhsip, and White Plains taking the hard road in beating 2 tough teams to make it. Both teams should be proud, when it is all said and done, they are in fact the 2 best D1 teams in Section 1.
May the best Tigers win!!!! :)

  21. ?

    did paul the wall play..

  22. paul the wall

Apparently, there were a few holes in the wall tonight.

  23. Suffern Fan

paul played but let up 2 goals with wide open players in front. 1 of the goals was a slapshot froms the bottom of the circle

  24. Hockey Fan

ummm last year sectional final throwing stuff on the ice

  25. Suffern Fan

people threw things on the ice

  26. ?

does anybody know wht the shots were

  27. jb1

I watched both teams play during the season and from my observation I predict an easy win for Mamaroneck over White Plains. I say 7-2 (maybe 3)! Never one of these two are my favorite team, just an opionion.

  28. Suffern Fan

suffern had 39 but wp had around 25-30

  29. Ta-Da

Does anyone where Coach Howie Rubenstein played HS hockey for?

  30. HG

    Hey Suffern,
Whats your excuse tonight? AIDS? Herpies? bubonic plaugue?
quiet down and accept your loss to a better team

  31. Mighty mighty bosstone

Pavarini made 39 saves??? Wow, that is awesome, talk about coming up big at a big moment in a hostile environment.

  32. Thank You

Thanks and congrats to WP, told you it was possible.

  33. nobody

white plains..simply great play..all the credit to suffern tonite. White plains played a solid game all around that line of mccarck broderick and klimchuck has been on a roll of late…

  34. Suffern Fan

pavarini did do good and had some amazing saves. i could go on and on about the refs but im not

  35. HV Playoffs

Congratulations WP from your Mariner friends. Who woulda thunk?

  36. jb1

WP is on a good run, they were down 4-0 to CN and scored 6 unanswered goals and won 6-4 and now they defeat Suffern 3-1. Unfortunately, I think that is where it ends, the ride is over, I hope you enjoyed.

  37. Hockey Mom

GO WHITE PLAINS!!! ANOTHER SUFFERN SHUT OUT!!! Nobody thought Suffern would be as good as last year…..NO ONE EVER THOUGHT WP would either, last year and once again this year! TIGERS showed that they can overcome and won two games that everyone else said they would lose. WAY TO GO WP!!!!!! Love you guys…..BIG MIKE WITH THE BIG STOPS!!!!!!

  38. tj

    Coach Rubenstein played in Buffalo

  39. HG

    jb1-
if you know what your talking about then you’d know that the score was 3-0, not 3-1. First time suffen has been shut out by one team twice.
and who are you to say the tigers season is over? If i remember correctly, they were told that about CN and Suffern, but they keep rolling….

  40. Get it right Harold!

    Harold Gutmann-
    stop making predictions. they suck.

  41. icedad

    Suffern Fan—
Let’s see now..when WP won at Ebersole it was because most
of the Suffern players were flu-ridden and it was too cold.
Tonight Suffern gets 39 shots and WP goalie Pavarini ‘did good’ but the refs….ENOUGH!!! The final was 3-0. WP
obviously capitalized on its chances, Suffern didn’t. One team has now outscored the other 7-0 in their last two mtgs.
Pls give them credit and leave it that.

  42. Go to the Tape

White Plains played a great game tonight, very disciplined and and obviously well coached. Congratulations, and good luck at West Point.

Suffern guys, you had a great season! Paul G had huge shoes to fill and was incredible all season long. For a season that was going to be a big ? mark, Suffern fans couldn’t have asked for more.

    See you guys next year.

  43. pp

    well done WP

WP vs Mamaroneck an old rivialy back in the seventies

should be a good one to watch

  44. 13thman

I think WP is going to upset mamo just because of the difficulty they had getting to this point. Playing CN and Suffern back to back and scoring 9 unanswered goals has got to be a pretty good momentum builder going into the game. Mamo on the other hand could not have less momentum after cruising to wins over NR and Mahopac. Either Mamo manages to kick it into high gear after not needing to up until now in the playoffs, or WP is gonna record another improbable upset.

  45. el estudiante

This should be a great final, reports of WP’s impending demise have been greatly exaggerated for… months now. Talk about overcoming the odds.

That said, I saw WP play Mamk late in the season at Hommocks, and it was an unmitigated disaster for WP. Down 7-1 in the third, after piling up a ton of offense in the second, Mamk gave up two goals with a back-up goalie and mixed lines of seniors and sophmores. Mamk seemed completely dominant, and WP’s goalie seemed clueless.

So what can you say? In all fairness, you gotta give Mamk the edge, but anyone who says it’s in the bag for them is an idiot. WP has shown that it can lose to lesser teams or beat “better teams” on any given day. So this is almost impossible to predict, because you just don’t know what WP will bring to the table in a neutral arena, against a team that trashed them in their last game together. My early prediction:
    Mamk: 5
    WP: 2

It’ll be close through two, a reoccurring pattern with Mamk, probably 2-2 or 3-2. But Mamk is always stellar in the third, and has more depth than anybody. I don’t think it’ll be quite like either of the games they played this year, but probably more like the most recent of the two. I think both teams are fired up, but nobody has shown they can stop Mamaroneck since… well, WP.

  46. Hockey Fan

Mamaroneck – notice you are staying very quiet during all this – good move.

White Plains – all your boasting is going to come back to haunt you.

  47. suff fan

congrats to WP. very solid team. sad to see my senior son’s season end, but every team in the playoffs, other than the one who wins it all, has their season end with a loss. It was a long time coming for WP and they deserved the win. Nice talking with their coaches after the game. good luck in West Point.

  48. CN

I’m putting all my eggs in the White Plains basket. Got to give it to Rubenstein, he really took a mediocre team and has found a way to win. Mamaroneck is in for trouble.

  49. CN

I would also like to note that something that separates White Plains from other teams is there heart and desire to win. Separates good teams from great teams.

  50. wptigerhockey

    Hockey Fan
the only reason that white plains is being louder on the blogs than mamaroneck is because mamaroneck played mediocre teams in games they were not an underdog in…white plains was the underdog in both games, and every one said “clarkstown north had the game in the bag”...same thing was said about suffern…of course the white plains fans are pumped..we just beat 2 of the top 5 teams in the state back to back, and shut out one of them…and coming back and scoring 6 unanswered goals…that is something that is truly amazing..congrats to suffer and clarkstown north though, you gotta give it to them..they are great teams..

  51. Karma

If you believe in KARMA Suffern just got a HUGE taste of it. Hopefully a valuable lesson learned

  52. WP Mom and Dad

Well said, CN. This WP team has continued to win because of their hearts, their desire, and the belief that they can win. I wouldn’t use the word “mediocre”, there are just no big stars. Howie has done a good job of capitalizing on the strengths of each player and getting them to work together as a team. Congratulations to the entire Tigers Team! Every single one of you has played a role in getting WP to this point. Looking forward to an exciting game on Sunday!

  53. Mamk

Mamaroneck does its talking on the rink, not on anonymous local forums.*

*Yes, I know I posted this anonymously. Stupid cynic.

  54. LITTLE CHANCE

White Plains has little chance of winning tomorrow. They did win two big games to their credit. How did White Plains do against the rest of league 1 this aseason?

  55. freckles

WP was 9-5-0 in league 1 this year, with wins over Mamaroneck and Suffern.

  56. Viola Rd

Hats off to White Plains. They played a great game. That’s what HS hockey is all about. Did you see the pure joy and jubilation of WP once the game was over? Me, personally, it brings back memories and was just nice to see a program get a signature win like that..something those kids will never ever forget. Unfortunatley it was against my team.
This wasn’t the Mounties year..it happens. I think you can say that this Mountie team was not underachievers..they got everything they could out their talents. They had a tremendous year. You finish in the top 5, 6..whatever they did..that’s one hell of a year. These kids and the coach have nothing, absolutely nothing to hang their heads over. They did the Mountie tradition proud and gave the fans an great ride.

  57. suffffffff!

    white plains, white trash

  58. high school hockey

high school hockey is not good at all…. you all need to get some lives and get off this blog. If you find that you are either rushing home from school or work to go on this blog, you need to get a life.

  59. waitinginthewings`

    May the best tiger win.
