State playoff schedule

Pelham completed the state playoff brackets, scoring three third-period goals to defeat Rye 3-1. The bloggers have done a good job dissecting the game, and more details can be found in my article.
Here’s an interesting stat — Pelham and Mamaroneck allowed the first goal in all six of their playoff games before coming back to win. That’s the sign of a great team — in the most pressurized situations, both teams stayed patient, maintaining composure, and stuck to the system.
The key last night was that, despite running off 17 straight shots in a 10 minute span (end of the first through the middle of the second), Rye only led 1-0. It was a combination of outstanding goaltending by Gavin Lambdin and Rye being just a split-second slow to rebounds or to tip a cross-ice pass into an empty net. Despite giving up a season-high 20 shots in the second period, Pelham must have felt good going into the locker room knowing it was only down one.
Another key was that Rye held Marc Flory scoreless, and Pelham still found a way to win, thanks to a perfectly-placed shot by Victor Dzenis and a huge contribution from the Pelicans overshadowed second line, namely Adrian Rivera. Which team would benefit from the Olympic-sized ice was a big wild card in the game — Rye’s depth or Pelham’s speed — and it turned out it was a fast player like Rivera that took advantage. Balanced scoring is something Pelham will probably need again to get past Queensbury — in the 3-2 loss in the regular season, Pelham’s two goals were Flory from Mamone.
No word yet on whether starting forward Andrew Emerson will be cleared to play on Saturday. While he was an inspiration figure on the bench — a lot of players told me they wanted to win so that the senior would have another chance to play — he’s obviously much more valuable on the ice.
So here’s the complete state playoff schedule (with state rankings)

Congrats Pelham! great season Rye. All three games between both of you two could have went either way. Good luck Pelham, hold your heads high Rye.
LoHud or anyone: Why are the section matchups in the quarters different for D1 and D2? Section 1 plays Section 10 in D1, but Section 9 plays Section 10 in D2 for example.
final 4- Div 1- mamk vs niagara, greece vs w.genny. mamk over greece for title.
Div II- pelham vs salmon river, kennmore vs new hartford.
new hartford over pelham
oldtiger- I agree with you all the way. Wish I could see a way for Pelicans to beat New Hartford. But, they look too strong. Maybe if Emerson is cleared to play and that top Pelican line can reunite for Utica. Any of the top 4 DI and top 2 DII teams from Section One could play with the state’s big boys. Rye had its season ended by the eventual state champ (MW) 2 years ago and then by the state runner up (Thousand Island) last season. Maybe we have our season end at the hands of another state finalist or champ. Solid year for the Section.
There are nine sections that have hockey, but only seven of them have both D1 and D2. In section 4, Ithaca is the only team and they are D1. In section 7 (Plattsuburgh area) there are only a handful of teams and Pelham would be the largest school in that section, so everyone is D2. So you can’t have the D1 and D2 quarterfinals mirror each other. In D2, section 10 is playing section 7 because they are right next to each other, but section 10 would need a different section to play in D1 which is where we come in.
Thank you LoHud. And thank you for all the hard work on the Section 1 website and your always informative postings and information.
harold we are from pelham and plan on making the trip to Glens falls is there any chance we can get shut out of game?
If West Genny is on their game they will knock Greece off!
yea Harold wht is the deal with this Glen falls areana… do they expect a big crowd or what
Does anyone know deal with Glen falls rink?
harold us pelham fans are running around like a chicken with are heads cut off…. who says we could get locked out of game… whos says we cant. who says stay over or get threr 2 hours early to make sure we get in…. what is gooing on here
for all the pelham fans get there 2 hours early place is gunnabe mobbed and will get shut out rink is not big
buying tickets at school will not gurantee u that u get in the place
wait guys isnt the civic center big…. Harold we need your help here as pelham is bringing a huge amount of people and no one has a clue what is going on
Lohud Hockey…..Section 7 is playing Section 6 and section 10 is playing section 9.
I e-mailed the Queensbury AD with questions about seating, parking, etc. I’ll let you know as soon as he responds. 3 more baby, you’re thinking of the Glens Falls Civic Center where the basketball championships are played — the hockey game will be at the Glens Falls Rec Center (where Pelham lost 5-1 to Glens Falls in the state quarters four years ago).
3 more baby-
Unfortunately the game is at the rec center, not the civic center. The civic center is where the river rats play but this weekend, it is being used for basketball. Don’t know alot about the rec center though. Sorry.
The Rec Center is not a big rink at all, I am surprised they are using that rink.
how the hell are we all going to fit into the rec center.. this is goin to be crazy… what is queensbury thinking here seriosuly
and then they put in at 1245 what are these clowns doing here
What is this “Rec Center”...how many people does it hold—-
We should start a tailgate at 6AM!!!
I’ll bring the bacon and eggs…
i dont get it how are they going to stop us from getting in… AND PElHAM DO WORK BOYS…. harold help us out here this is getting out of control
yea i will bring the orange juice and the coffee…. and yea how many people does this so called rec center hold
The rec center is your typical hockey “longhouse” rink, bleacher seating (not arena style) if I remember correctly, similar to Hommocks, look and feel, good rink for playing not for viewing.
I guess we know what Massena felt like coming down last year to Hommocks.
why are they holding the game at this place Harold…. this is going to be nuts what are we going to have to do leave at 4 AM to make sure we get there three hours early jus so we can get in???
can we all fit in the place
what the heck…. LIKE the hommecks HOW ARE WE ALL GOING TO FIT
harold ask this clown of an AD they have if they are going to shut people out of the game.. we are all leaving sat morn and we are not going to get turned back at the door.. so please ask this guy that and ask them why they are playing here
yea something is wrong here this whole thing doesnt make sense
Google: fire road, glens falls
click on the map…
Zoom all they way in, there’s your rink.
Settle down folks. Leave at 7am, get there at 10. Get your ticket ahead of time at the High School from Delveccio. All is well.
GO PELHAM!!!!!
doesnt matter if you have ticket if sold out still wont get in
calm down here… lets see what harold has to say…
To all, the rec center is very similar to Hommocks, although it might even be a little bit smaller. It is a very narrow building so when your not in the bleachers, which arent very big, there is almost no room at all for fans to walk around let alone watch the game. Meaning, Pelham fans you better get up early to drive up there because if Queensbury brings a huge crowd, which they will they might not have a choice but to close the building. Leave at 7 or 8 and you will by fine, but get there and secure a spot inside, and lets get behind these guys. Try to take the home ice advantage away from Queensbury as much as possible because like the Mamaroneck does with the Hommocks, Glens Falls and Queensbury do with the rec center, pack it in with wild fans and use their crowds to rattle opposing teams. The Pelham boys are tough but they need their people up there to level it out. Pelham fans can be the best in the section when there are a lot of them, so get there and get loud. Go Pelham get back to Utica.
Ed Witz spoke to the Queensbury coach and the AD, and they both told him that the tickets issued by the Pelham athletic department will guarantee admission. Basically, if capacity is 800 and Pelham sells 100 tickets, then Queensbury will only sell 700 tickets on Saturday. Anyone who needs one needs to contact Witz or the school.
I’m still waiting to hear back on parking, because I heard the lot is smaller than the Ice Hutch.
good post Nick. Pelham is certainly “road tested” for these types of games and atmospheres. The schedule they play puts them in these places quite often. Pelham fans need to back this team. Its a strong and smart defensive team with some offensive pop. They could do damage and any help they get from the supportive vocal crowd they have at home games is certainly a plus. Get out and support em.
lets get this parking situation down here and anygood places to eat around there
Pelham this is similar to what Massena faced last year. The Mamo rink was to small for the game. People had to stand on the picnic tables to see. The game should have never have been played there and I agree your game should not be at this venue if it is simiar to Mamk’s rink.
Is Lohud going to show the game online again?
yea exactly not everyone is going to fit i agree wit FAR NORTH…. harold what are these people thinking here
Harold,
what is the Massena Arena like? And how early do you think us mamk fans should arive before gametime?
arrive*
Hockey Fan
The Massena rink is huge and very nice. Older but the stands are on both side, has to hold 1500 I’d guess.
I am fairly sure the massena rink will accomodate everyone, if you go, they will get you in. It is a very large rink, lots of seating.
Last year, Mamaroneck did not think there would be so many massena people coming to the rink, I mean geez, it is 7 hours away.
But massena came down with about 200 people. Mamaroneck can hold 1200 legally, but I think they usually try to pack in an extra hundred. As far as I can tell, everyone from massena got in.
Glens falls is a different story, it is a great idea that they are selling tickets in advance to ensure that people who make the trip get in.
Is there any thought by state officials to hold the quarterfinals at Utica, as well as the semi’s and finals?
Does any pelham student have word on whether or not we are trying to get a fan bus for the game?
No fan bus for pelham because not enough kids took it to WP (although a turnout of ~15 kids isn’t bad considering they announced it the day of the game, permission slips had to be signed, and it cost 8 bucks for the ride…).
I’m going to Renaissance ~7:00 before heading north getting some sausage egg and cheeses, I’ll probably be driving up there myself, anyone who wants to go up lemme know, especially if you have a license and wanna split the road time.
Massena’s Rink is more than able to accommodate anyone who goes up to watch the game. The people in Massena welcome all hockey players and families, its the Hockeytown of NY State.
I think the challenge is they are not used to our brashness, I think we come off as obnoxious to them, but “hey” Its our style
Does anyone know if Mamaroneck will be trekking up day of or day before the game?
Ta da,
Mamaroneck is going up saturday morning
And when they were up there a few weeks ago, the parents were a little obnoxious themselves. One said to a mamk player after watching the pelham massena game, “You better eat your wheaties and get a good night sleep, it’s gonna be a long day when you play us tomorrow”
If you want to talk about how a team and fans are treated lets talk about the Mamk fans last year towards Massena. Rocking the bus that brought fans….spect stuck in one corner…public bathromm is basically in the visiting locker romm….game time and warm up kept getting switched…Massena was made to stand by the door for 10 minutes before warm ups because funny the warm up time was changed again….Mamk needs a break so the clock happens to go out…hey even the rink manager doesnt even like Mamk team and mentioned these issues could happen even before the game started…no showers in the locker rooms….this list could go on and on
Well what happened to them after the last game, I bet they will be hesitant to make any more comments. They don’t want them stirring our Tigers pot
(no pun intended)
last time i checked their were public bathrooms in the lobby at hommocks ice rink
Check again….there may be some in the lobby but they also have them with the visiting locker room. The same place they let everyone in that doesnt want to pay!!!
Does anybody know where you can find the new hartford roster? They were the team we played in the state final last year (about half of that team was actually from new hartford). They had 1 really good player whose name was Zalewski but other then that they were nothing special, but by high school standards would still be very good. I was just wondering if he is on that high school team cause he was the only player I remember
I’m camping out in front of DelVecchio’s office tomorrow at 8 AM.

Hockey Fan,
I spoke with the Massena AD and he assured me that there will be no problem for anyone who wants to attend the game. His exact words were “The Arena will hold whatever the crowd is.”
Mike Jones,
I asked my editors about broadcasting Saturday’s games, and I’ll let you know what the final decision is. I’d say it’s highly unlikely though.
I’m going to try and get in touch with the Queensbury AD again on Thursday. In the meantime I suggest Pelham fans take a deep breath. Like someone else pointed out, Queensbury would say the exact same thing if the situation was reversed (why is the game at the Ice Hutch? Where will we park? Is there enough room? etc)
viper,
If you think that roster is good, check out Mid-Fairfield’s year-over-year.
Sounds like the plan should be to definitely get tickets from Delveccio before you go up.
Pelham fans, bring you blue and gold and your spirit… your boys need you!!
And somebody please post updates as often as possible. Especially since it probably won’t be broadcast by lohud or on the radio like the Mamo game.
There should be a policy that precludes recreational facility’s from being used for chapionship games.
Right now NY State has about 30 Colleges with Hockey rinks that are dark as their teams have not made playoff bids.
This is not rocket science. If you want to grow the game you need to make the places these games are played in comfortable for the fans, players and family’s. West Point was a great choice for sections, there are 30 scattered arena’s and collegiate environments that could be used. Somehow someone up North is just mailing this in. When you choose a building that is made for youth games with a bleeacher set up you have missed an opportunity to further the game of hockey. Bad Job by those picking locations.
NSotCB,
I totally agree. The college rinks are a great idea.
Many Massena fans got turned away from Hommocks last year – I was there and it got ugly in the lobby – Terrible job by Mamo and section 1.
just a quickie. when are all league teams announced?
WE WILL SEE YOU IN UTICA, GO MOUNIES!!!! OH WAIT, WE LOST CRAP I FORGOT.
Not sure how the two games will go. I think Mamaroneck should advance even playing in that tough place to win. Mamaroneck year has come I think. Pelham is going to be a close game. Both Rye and Pelham lost to Q 3 times this year. Pelham lost once and could have won. Pelham has intangibles that can advance them. Its a clever group that can hide or over come talent or depth inequities. The games I have seen they can play from behind and like Mamaroneck can give the first goal and not allow momentum change hurt them. With a one goal lead there is no team better than Pelham. The defense men especially 6 and 13 keep it out of danger. After Pelham scored to make it 2-1 they go into that defensive style and you knew they were not going to let the game get tied. Pelham also has enough offense when they open up to score. Should be a great hockey weekend for Section 1
For those fans, parents, etc. remember it was NOT that long ago that section 1(downstate)with the occasional RYE/SUFFERN teams from 80’s were a walkover to the upstate, north country schools.Act like you’ve been there before. Westchester county is much different from these upstate counties(st.lawrenece). Also, SUNY Potsdam is about 20 min from Massena….that would have been the perfect place to play or Cheel Arena @Clarkson.GOOD LUCK to Pelham and Mamk.
I beleieve Harold said there would be 14 all section players, here is my list
Willow CN
Shuman CN
Hiller Suf
Jackson MMK
Zweig MMK
Hagan MMK
McGee WP
Flory PEL
O’Connor NR
Gabriel Suf
Glaser MMK
Benencasa RYE
Mamone Pel
Let the argument begin. If you feel someone should be added indicate who they should replace on my list.
Forgot 1 Norwin Suf
Add Maresco from Somers/North Salem
is is the 13th man???? that wil b meeting at rennaisance at 7 AM
how can pelham not have a bus sec1fan???
hold on a second there is no bus going up to glen falls… how is that possible
btw the 13th man who r u… mayb we can go up together
The Pelham administration decided to announce our busses up to West Point at 1:30 PM. The bus was leaving at 4:30. Kids needed permission slips, signed by parents and 8 dollars. The admins decided to get 2 busses for some stupid reason, and are now mad that they lost money on the busses. Rye kids got busses for free….
So now because of this the AD and Principal refuse to set up a bus.
hockeyfan,
All-league, all-section and special award winners (MVP, sportsmanship, etc) will all be decided at a coaches meeting on March 18.
anyone here from pelham have room in there car
What day is the All section dinner harold?
Thanks Westchester Hockey. 9 guys from that team were on the team we played. Having atleast 9 players from a top teir II team will obviously make any high school team a top contender and Zalewski will be first team all-state. But good luck to Pelham, hopefully you can take them down.
And seventhman, we beat them twice, so I’m not that impressed with their roster.
viper,
mid-fairfield has 5 midget teams. doubt you played the team that the daniels twins, nugent, etc. played for..
Oldtiger,
Massena would have no reason to play at SUNY Potsdam… Massena arena is nicer and will be able to accomodate the crowd. I’ve been to many of the rinks in the state… hard to beat Massena Arena for seating, sight lines and parking. And the hockey history in the rink is incredible. Better parking in Massena too.
Cheel at Clarkson is a beautiful rink, that’s where the section 10 finals are played but since the quarterfinals allow home sites, It would be foolish for Massena to give up the home ice advantage and move the game out of Massena.
For all who are coming up… have a safe trip. We look forward to seeing you Saturday night!!
Jerry,
Good point, I was thinking if crowd size was an issue at Massena then they could look elswhere….yes massena’s rink is very nice, played there and the home ice advantage makes things much more exciting!!
