Ice hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley with Harold Gutmann

Status report

Couple news items out of the Pelham-Mamaroneck practice/scrimmage today at the Ice Hutch:

Good news first. Andrew Emerson (right) was cleared for contact this morning and participated fully. He will start alongside Marc Flory and Mike Mamone on Saturday. I caught up with him afterwards:

“It was kind of jumping into the fire because we were playing against Mamaroneck, which is a great team, but it just feels good to get back out there. … It’s hard to say I’ll be 100 percent because I’ve been out for three weeks now, and at least the first half of it I couldn’t do anything, but I’ve been going to the gym, working out. I’ll probably be close to it but it’s hard. I’ve definitely lost a little bit of stamina so I’m just trying to work as hard as I can to get back to where I was.”

Now the bad news. Brett Jackson (right) sat out practice with a groin pull he suffered Saturday against Massena. He finished that game (although he spent the entire three minutes between the first and second overtime laying completely flat on his back on the ice), and he vowed to play no matter what on Saturday. Quickness and speed are two of Jackson’s greatest attributes, so hopefully the injury won’t hamper his ability this weekend.

He talked about the injury on tonight’s VC Live show, and I was also pleased to welcome fellow Mamaroneck senior Mike Meglio to the studio. There was a problem transferring the show to where it can be replayed on demand, but that should be fixed when the tech guys get in tomorrow.

I’m prohibited from posting or commenting the next two days, but sports editor Susie Arth will be monitoring the blog in my absence. She can be reached at sarth@lohud.com. I will be back Friday with some previews for the weekend.

great to see emerson at practice. as a senior who has worked so hard for years, he deserves the opportunity to get out there saturday and give it his best as he always does. a great kid.
and i hope brett jackson can get out there for mamaroneck also as he too is an extremely hard working hockey player.

  2. hockeyy

I think it’s great that these two teams could put the season behind them as competitors and work together to get ready for this HUGE weekend. I wish both of them the best of luck and can’t wait to see the hardware that comes home to Westchester!!!!!

Glad to hear Andrew will be back. Hope that Brett can play through the pain and help his team. Leave it all on the ice boys! Put it in the net!!

  3. The point

Great to hear about Emerson, one of Pelhams top 3 forwards. Good to see Pelham will be at full strength, it’s been about 10 games since they have been but it seems to have allowed others like Rivera to pickup their games and Reilly to further develop. I see a great weekend for our 2 Section 1 teams, I hope Jackson is good to go.

  4. The point

Is there a place to find info on the Burke hockey team, it seems all the other schools have a standings or stats page but Burke. I’d like to know their top players and stats.

  5. genius

Don’t worry about Bretts injury. Brett is like Hannibal Lector… he can lower his heart rate down to 15 beats per minute by just willing it. He can also train his body to ignore pain receptors, I once saw him cut open his hand by accident… then get his moms sewing kit, give himself 20 stitches in his palm, and then fix tiles on his roof in 99 degree heat for 3 hours… all without even taking an aspirin.

  6. Jake LaMotta

“There’s no way Mamaronecks goin’ down. Mamaroneck don’t go down for nobody.” -Raging Bull

Keep your tyson quotes, tyson can’t hold Lamotta’s strap.

  7. Pelham and Mamaroneck

Adding Emerson back for Pelham really makes the whole package different. Even if Emerson is 50% of what he was its a big lift. Emerson is a goal scorer and one of the best in Section 1. He also passes and setsup well. While Emerson was gone Pelham used a talented freshman who now can move to greatly improve another one of Pelhams lines as this kid cut his teeth in some huge games. If Jackson is at least at 50% he will be able to do things that can help Mamaroneck win other than score goals. He brings many intangibles to the game

    Harold

Do you know if there will be any radio or TV coverage
of the playoffs this weekend at Utica?

  9. ....

Harold do you know what the date is for the Journal News Awards Dinner and where it is going to be this year?

  10. LoHud Hockey

Rob Fine found the back of the net in OT this past weekend, but click here to see what happened the last time a guy named Rob from section 1 found the back of the net against Massena in a state playoff game:

The only section 1 team to win a state title in hockey will be inducted into the hall of fame this Saturday up in Utica. It would be amazing to see two more state titles come back down this way the same weekend we are celebrating the first one.

Good luck upstate Pelham & Mamaroneck.

  11. Rocket Fuel

Ok a couple of things here:
A belated congrats to Suffern for winning the state 18 years ago.
Was the other teams goalie on crack? How did that go in?
Did the stick of the goalie give anyone a concussion after he chucked it in to the stands?
They had some type of coverage in 1992, but as of now there seems like there will be absolutely no coverage except crummy blog updates? Are you serious. Pelham and Mamaroneck, 2 of the richest communities can’t get local cable to cover this weekend? free internet radio? Nothing?

  12. flying V

With Emerson back, Pelham is a complete team with two solid/strong lines and a 3rd that can get the job done.

  13. Another injury?

Who was the Mamaroneck player who injured himself (looked pretty painful) in the batting cages after the scrimmage with Pelham? What were you doing, dude?

  14. SUFFERN1

    Hey Lohud,

Do you have the tying goal with 30 seconds left?

  15. Hockey Fan

how many times did that announcers voice crack lol

  16. Mamk fan

    Hey Suffern1, Remember this?

  17. Mamk fan

    Or this?

  18. SUFFERN1

OK I promise to stay off of the blogs and let Pelham and Mamaroneck have their time. Your right it’s not about Suffern anymore.

  19. hockeyy

Mamk fan, you are obnoxious. Suffern is out, move on. Be a good sport, eh?

  20. hockeyy

Oh, sorry… i skipped over the Suffern1 entry to Lohud.

    Nevermind…

  21. fanotgame

Maybe Mamo can jump out early vs. NW and let Jackson mend one more day before the final vs. Greece/WG winner. Might be hard to man up two days in a row on a sore muscle.

  22. LoHud Hockey

SUFFERN1, I do. I actually have the whole tournament on DVD, but that is the only clip I transferred to YouTube. If you know who I am and want a copy of it, let me know and I can burn you a copy.

Also, to all (mainly for Mamk fan), putting that up there was in no way, shape, or form meant to try and steal any thunder from Mamk & Pelham. I am well aware which of the three section 1-related events this Saturday should take a back-seat to the other two, but that doesn’t mean it should be ignored. I have a tape of the game with audio commentary, and it is a big part of the history of High School Hockey in this section, especially since the feat has yet to be accomplished again (hopefully it will have been accomplished two more times within the next 4 days), so I figured I would put it up there for people to view if they want to.

  23. sec1 fan

The clip is epic. I can’t imagine a better way to win a state championship. Are those students running on the ice?

  24. ?

Why would Pelham or Mamaroneck tell who is injured or who is coming back? Why give there opponents any info?

  25. Old Coach 92

Yes those were students who poured over the boards in what can only be described as ecstasy. It took several minutes to get them off the ice so that the handshakes and awards ceremonies could proceed. It might have been 17 years ago but it seems like just yesterday. If either of our teams gets there this weekend they will never forget the thrill.

  26. SUFFERN1

    Hey Lohud,

Just put the whole 92 championship game up here so Mamk fan can enjoy it! lol!

  27. in the stands

Mamaroneck’s Jackson is fine, Pelham’s Emerson will play, GO section 1

  28. LoHud Hockey

No, Jackson is Jackson & Fine is Fine (You have to watch your wording with this Mamk team).

    Finkle is Einhorn…Einhorn is Finkle
