    AWESOME!!!!!!

  2. Yekcoh

This is going to be a great match-up, four great squadrons meeting up to try to become the best team in the state, these guys are going to battle for the Championship spot, I predict no out come, because its not right to take away a moment in the final four away from these kids, like what happened to me in 1987….

  3. LoHud Hockey

Since the camera’s going to be there and everything’s going to be already set up, any chance you will also show coverage of the 1992 Suffern team being inducted into the hall of fame since it will be taking place right before the Mamaroneck game?

  4. Holly

Dear God Lo Hud, I hope that’s a terrible joke!

  5. Lenny

Lets put an end to upstate dominance in High School Ice Hockey !!! Go Tigers and Go pelicans!!!

  6. MHS Fan

Any chance we can hire the Massena announcers to do play by play on the internet radio?

The West Point video feed was painful and gave me a headache. The Mamk-Suffern Section 1 final video was more viewable.

  7. LoHud Hockey

Why would I be joking about that? I wouldn’t suggest that they go up there to webcast just for that, nor would I suggest that they put in any extra effort for it, but if you have watched any of the other webcasts, they usually have the camera turned on and the webcast started before warm-ups even start. The HOF induction ceremony is slated for 2:55 and the Mamk/NW game for 3:15. I would imagine the cameraman is not going to break down his setup after the Pelham game only to set it up again a couple hours later for Mamk, so it will already be in place. And there won’t be any back and forth motion like in a game, so they wouldn’t have to keep paying attention and moving the camera. All they would have to do is turn on the camera 20 minutes before game time for Mamk, zoom in to where the ceremony will be and walk away until the players hit the ice for the start of the first.

Won’t matter to me since I will be in Utica anyway, but it would be nice for the people who don’t make it, especially any players from that team who didn’t get up there. It’s a part of history for downstate hockey.

Assuming you are a Mamk or Pelham player/fan/parent, try not to knock it too much. If your team can pull out a couple of victories this weekend, you may be the one hoping to see the HOF induction ceremony 17 years from now. And if you’re not living locally anymore at that point, you would be asking the same question of the Journal News, hoping their answer would be “yes.”

  8. frozen four

Will you be showing the other D2 and D1 semi-final games?

  9. mamk

    lohud,

i dont know why some of the mamk fans are being so childish. I would even want to see the dvd of suffern beating massena in 92. that has nothing to do with suffern trying to steal the spot light nor does wanting to see the induction to the hall of fame for sufferns 92 team. plus its not like we cudnt use the extra posts since most people aren’t even coming on here because they have all been eliminated. sry for those mamk fans that have the need to show the few times they beat suffern. dont get me wrong i am a mamk but i wouldnt like it if everytime i said something in the past suffern would throw it in my face about how they beat us. and some of those times they were beatings.

on another note. im really excited abt the webcast as i will not be going to utica. should be exiciting. 2 more games boys. same to u pelham. lets bring both state titles to westchester for the first time ever. I cant say how much i would love to have mamo beat greece in the finals. but either them of wg would be good

  10. fanotgame

I know this week is all about Mamo and Pelham, rightfully so. They are both number #2 in the latest Sportswriters’ polls. But a big hand for the Section getting 6 teams in (4 in DI and 2 in DII). Powerhouse Section 5 (Syracuse)had 7 teams ranked and strong Section 3 (Utica) had 6 like us. Go Downstate hockey.

  11. LoHud Hockey

    fanotgame-

Syracuse is part of section 3. Section 5 is the Rochester area.

  12. more cowbell

Since you can hear the webcast, can someone do play by play?

  13. fanotgame

Lohud- you are probably the guy who can answer this. Looking at the Section 10 teams, almost all of them are very small enrollment schools. Even the big name schools-Massena, Canton, Potsdam (all about the size of Somers)would be DII schools in our Section. If the state decides to have a statewide hard enrollment cuttoff for DI/DII, would these traditional DI schools have the option of “playing up” and staying in DI?

  14. Massena high school

Massena High School has just under 1000 students. They are a totally legit D1 hockey school, Section 1 is the only section that pits the teams based on enrollment and then splits it down the middle. The upper half in D1 and lower in D2.

  17. Massena high school

Hey lOhud, thanks for the suffern 92 clip. I keep watching it because I laugh out loud because of the goalies reaction. He just airmails his stick in to a crowd of people, he is so aggravated he just chucks it without a care. Classic reaction by him.

  18. Holly

    Get over yourselves Suffern!!!

  19. LoHud Hockey

I honestly don’t know what they would do. If you take every team with hockey in the state and drew a line down the middle, it would be right around 1000 students, so across the state there would be the same number of teams in D1 & D2, but the problem is, that it owuld be very lopsided in certain sections. All of Section 10 & Section 7 would be in D2 (Enrollment goes by grades 10-12, not 9-12 so Massena has an enrollment of 722 making them the largest school in section 10). Meanwhile, section 1 would have 20 D1 schools and 9 D2.

For enrollment sizes across the state, click here: http://www.nysphsaa.org/production/classificationFinalRpt.aspx

I would think if they drew the line, it would be at 1000 or somewhere near it and teams would have the option of playing up (a D2-sized team can opt to play D1) but they cannot play down (If you have over 1000 students, you cannot play in D2).

  20. LoHud Hockey

Holly, mind if I ask what team/school you are affiliated with and why it bothers you so much that Suffern fans are still interested in this blog and high school hockey in general regardless of whether or not their team is still in it?

  21. sec1 fan

Do any Mamaroneck people know what the Mamaroneck students are doing in terms of heading up to Utica? Do they have a bus/ or a hotel?

  22. domurda

i dont think their will be a bus going up to utica, but i know plenty of students that will be up there to support.

  23. sexy1 fan

  24. CN Alumni/Fan

LoHud – thanks for the video on the ‘92 state title game. When you said “another Rob from Section 1 found the back on the net against Massena”, I thought you were referring to Schelling scoring the game wining goal for Suffern, but in fact it was another Rob from Suffern. Another history lesson for me.

Best of luck to Mamaroneck and Pelham this weekend!

  25. sdfsdfjk

Wheres the on demand from last night

  26. Mamo1

I changed my name so I could blog and not upset the Mamo fans! lol!

Take this to the bank!It will be 5-0 Mamo before you can blink!Niagra-Wheatfield has no business being at the final four! There are several teams in section one that would lay a beat down on them. They shouldn’t even be ranked in the top 20 let alone the top 10.

  27. LoHud Hockey

No, it was Rob Stevens that scored the goal (he also scored with 30 seconds left in the 3rd to tie it up and send it to OT). Schelling graduated a few years before this happened, although his HS hockey career ended against Massena as well (Triple OT loss in the state quarterfinal game at SOR in ‘89)

  28. oldtiger

yekcoh- what team was that in 87…?

  29. Pelham fan

As a Pelham fan for years and years I am looking forward to Mr Orlando Suffern team getting recognized at the Final Four. Pelham has always respected the success that Suffern hockey has had and brought to Section 1. Congratulations!

  30. suffern

Holly, what the heck are you talking about? Get over ourselves? what has anyone written on here that would make you say that? CAN YOU SAY “I AM A LOSER!!!!!!!”

  31. fanotgame

I agree with Pelham fan. Suffern has been the gold standard for Section One hockey for as long as I can remember. Let them have their day in the sun up in Utica. Hopefully, that day will also include 2 state championships for the Section Orlando now presides over.

  32. Yekcoh

oldtiger- its was the Mt. Kisco Knightingales, we were lead by Jerome Bush, the leading for on our team, 32 goals, 35 asissts. We had quite the squadron, and were cheering for the LoHud teams to win it all this year. Best of luck Pelham and Mamaroneck. Bring home the gold.

  33. Rocket Fuel

Yeah OK, Like Orlando has anything to do with mamaorneck or Pelhams success. For years Pelham had to fight to get the leuage to make two playoff divisions. Finally smarter heads prevailed and it is based on school size. It was not long ago that Mamaroneck was hiding in D2 along with Clarkstown North and every other large school.
What Suffern did in 92 was great, but this weekend is about Mamaroneck and Pelham… these kids were not even alive when 1992 happened.
We have Ed Witz to compliment for forcing his will and making the 2 divisions, without his constant pushing Suffern would be the D1 Champion this year uncontested (like in the old days) and Mamaroneck would be playing in D2.

  34. suff fan

hey Rocket Fuel, who did Suffern lose to to get eliminated by this year? White Plains. So how do you say Suffern would have been the D1 champion? and the decision to induct the 92 team was made long before we knew what if any section one teams would be up in Utica. If anything, I think showing the Suffern 92 clip could help motivate Mamk and Pelham. After seeing that celebration, wouldn’t you want one of your own?

Anyway, enough about you. LoHud, who is the announcer on the 92 clip you posted? He is awesome. He makes it very entertaining. btw, if the Massena poster didn’t point it out, I would have missed the Massena goalie chucking his stick into the stands.

  35. Rankings

Great to finally see white plains get ranked for the first time ever! Still do not understand how they are ranked behind a Suffern team that they beat 4-0 and 3-0 in the final two weeks of the year and just dominated Clarkstown North for two periods to end their season.
They should be at least a top 10. I would probably have Suffern at 12 and CN is 15 at best with their weak schedule.

  36. fanotgame

The DI/DII split is a little squirrely. Last year’s DII champ (Webster Thomas) is well over 1000 students (grades 10 thru 12) while last year’s DI champ Massena is about the size of Rye (650 students grades 10 thru 12). It was even worse two years ago when Monroe Woodbury won the DII states as a AA Football school.

Lets keep the DI/DII split, but find a way to keep the big schools out of DII. If smaller schools like Massena want to continue in DI, fine, but no more big regional schools in DII please.

  37. Rocket Fuel

OK fine. Then the D1 Champion would have been White Plains. and Mamaroneck the D2. The point being, Pelham and Rye would not have won it.

  38. LoHud Hockey

The problem with the D1/D2 split if they put in a hard line, is what is considered large and what is considered small. Sorry to get all philosophical, but you can only define small and large in terms of each other. In situations like football where you have five classes it is easier because it’s basically a spectrum. In hockey, you only have two. Down here where we have schools like NewRo, North Rockland, & WP (add in MW & Newburgh if we drift a little north into section 9), we see an obvious distinction between large (the five mentioned above) and small (Pelham, Rye, PR, etc.). Up in Section 10, Massena is a big school, but only because the population density up there in North Country is WAYYYYYYYYY less than it is down here. Massena, with it’s 722 enrollment is the largest school in section 10 (hockey team or not) with the next largest (Franklin Academy at 589) having almost 150 less students. In Section 1 terms, Massena is slightly smaller than Nyack and Franklin Academy is about the size of Pelham. Once you factor in mergers, the only section 1 teams with smaller enrollments than Massena are PR, BH, Pelham & Rye.

Now, on the NYSPHSAA site, they show classification cutoff numbers for sports where there are 5 groups, 4, 3, & 2 and then list all the exceptions. Now being as how there are exceptions, I would imagine hocky wouldn’t HAVE to abide by this, but the standard for a 2 classificaion sport is 1-799 is class B and 800+ is class A. This would still leave all of sction 10 in D2. I think anywhere they draw the line would bring complaints from schools the size of Pelham & Rye (not Pelham & Rye specifically since they are used to playing D1 teams all year long, but teams that size in other sections). You see it all the time on the Syracuse message board, where a team in the D2 states has 900 students and the schools with 500 are complaining that they shouldn’t be in D2 (forget about when MW won it two years ago).

As it’s been said on here MANY times before, it’s not the size of the student body that affects your ability to compete, it’s the size of the hockey-playing community. I would think that’s why the state would be reluctant to put hard lines down. If they did, I don’t think they will while it’s still two divisions. If they ever decide to go to three, then I would think that’s when we would see hard lines. If that was the case I would say it would be something like 1-699, 700-1099, and 1100+ but who knows?

  39. LoHud Hockey

    suff fan-

He is a big-time fan of HS hockey in the area going back many years. He’s one of the minor officials over in Westchester (I’m purposely leaving his name off because I don’t know if he wants it published on here). He did commentary for the games into a tape recorder just for fun. Completely unrelated to that, one of the fathers of one of the guys on the team brought his camcorder and recorded the games (this was before everyone and their mother had a camcorder in their pocket at all times in the form of a cell phone and camcorders recorded directly onto full-sized VHS tapes).

Then after Suffern won, a certain student at Suffern High School, who shall also remain nameless, found out about the audio tape and the video tape and looked at it like a guy named Reese looking at chocolate & peanut butter and figuring “there’s something here if I can only figure out how to merge them into one” so he spent weeks putting the commentary onto the video tape.

  40. fanotgame

Lohud- thanks for the analysis. Maybe a simple solution is to say the Sections can continue to split the teams up any way they want, as long as no DII team has a 10th thru 12th grade enrollment larger than a certain number, say 1000. Or tie it to football classes and say no DII hockey team can be higher than an A football program. That way, you avoid the situation that occurred the last two years where large regional schools like Webster Thomas and Monroe Woodbury (both with AA Football programs) wound up as DII champs. In our Section, next year, as crazy as it sounds, if you went to a 15/14 split instead of a 16/13 split, Mamo would be DII. I bet Suffern would like that.

  41. massena

Massena enrollment in high school is 960. It says right on their website.
    http://www.mcs.k12.ny.us/cab/about_us/about_us.htm

Not sure what everyone else is looking at. Massena for such a country area, is a huge high school. And their hockey playing community (a stone throw from canada) is even bigger.

  42. LoHud Hockey

There are 960 in the entire school (grades 9-12) for the purposes of classification, they only go by grades 10-12. That number is 722. I believe they do that because not every high school is 9-12 (some districts have 9th grade in the junior high). So if you go by total number of kids in the high school, you wouldn’t be comparing everyone equally.

  43. massena

Doesnt westchester go by high school enrollment, not 10-12? Doesnt Suffern and Mamk have a bit over 1000 in their school 9-12? I thought section 1 goes by high school enrollment 9-12

  44. suff fan

Lohud, understand you respecting their privacy. Just like the peanut butter and chocolate merger, the audio and video merger was great. They really captured the excitement.

  45. fanotgame

To Massena- the enrollment numbers for Suffern (1187) and Mamo (1127) are for grades 10 thru 12, just like Massena’s 722 number. My 650 number for Massena was what next year’s 10 thru 12 enrollment is projected to be (according to the link Lohud posted above). I am not saying Massena is a small school(especially in relation to the others in your Section) or trying to convince Massena to play DII. I am pointing out the rules could be tightened to prevent schools nearly twice the size of what Massena will be next year from being eligible to play DII.

  46. Anon

The ceremony is between games. If they don’t show the ceremony it will just be static. What is the problem? Don’t you people realize that Suffern is part of the Journal News coverage area? How does it detract in any way from Pelham and Mamaroneck if they show this ceremony? It is totally appropriate. Like Lohud Hockey said it will cost them nothing. They just have to leave the camera pointed at the ice. Thats it. What is the problem? It’ll take 10 minutes and then it’ll be over and then the next game will start and everyone will forget about it. Reverse roles, Mamk fans. Pretend Mamk won 1 state title 15 yrs ago and they were having a ceremony between 2 games that are already going to be webcast. You ask if they can leave the webcast going between games so you can watch and all the Suffern fans jump down your throat like you’re trying to upstage their game. Ridiculous!

  47. audio with visual

any website with all the section 1 enrollments? I can’t find one.

  48. audio with visual

I believe the state forced Monroe Woodbury to go to D1 after they won the state championship in D2

  49. Old Coach 92

The announcer is an old friend of mine who made audio tapes of many games that i coached in the 80’s as well as Mamaroneck games and Section 1 playoff games and state tournament games. I am pretty sure he will be in Utica this weekend but I don’t know if he does play-by-play of the games anymore.
As far as the 92 Suffern tape is concerned, I had the audio tape from my buddy, LoHud ha dthe video from a parent so I asked my son (a player on the Suffern team) to see if there was any way to combine the two, Knowing that if anyone could do so it would be LoHud. He did a magnificent job.

  50. fanotgame

audio with visual- Lohud has the link above. Just elect 2009/2010 and it will show you the whole state. Maybe you can just elect each Section also.

  52. oldtiger

    yekcoh- Good one….funny

  53. LoHud Hockey

This is the link to the Classificaition portion of the NYSPHSAA website: http://www.nysphsaa.org/classification/

If you click on “Classification Numbers” you can set the school year, and section (or just leave it on “all Sections”) and click on “Get Report” to see the enrollment (10-12) numbers for every school in that section (or the entire state).

If you want to limit it to hockey, then click on “Classification/Participation Data” instead of “Classification Numbers.” This will give you another option to choose a sport. Change that to Ice Hockey and now you will narrow it down to only schools with hockey programs. The only problem with this is it doesn’t tell you who is merged with who. So while we know that down here, in other sections we don’t know what schools are merged with what other schools in hockey. For example, if you set it to Section 7, Keene Central comes up as having a hockey program with an enrollment of 39. So either half the kids in the school are hockey players or they are merged with someone else (with who, I have no idea).

  54. Forget all the rest....

Section 1 has 2 teams in the Frozen Four. I could find records, stats and the scedule for Niagra-Wheatfield but nothing on Burke Catholic. Anyone know where to find info on them? Just looking at the stats I really like Mamaroneck on Saturday.

  55. LoHud Hockey

    Forget all the rest….

This is the closest thing to a Section 9 Website:
    http://www.recordonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?Category=SPORTS31

It’s the HS Sports section of the Times Herald Record (The local paper in Orange County). None of the section 9 teams have their own websites, and the section 9 website only has dates for the state tournament on it (And they aren’t even up to date since they still list the Burke/Salmon River & MW/NW quarterfinal games). They should take a look at the stellar job the guy who runs the Section 1 website does and steal a page out of his book (or hire him to do their website) and step up their game.

  56. Al Bundy

Wait. CN did beat Pelham and White Plains twice. Even if you downplay the scoring exploits, Matt Willows was still probably the best high school hockey player in the State and Macindoe is an all-state caliber player.

CN would’ve likely finished 3rd in league 1 this year. A top 15 state ranking for them is not out-of the question and probably a testament to the respect the section is now receiving.

  57. fanotgame

Al- North beat WP once. WP won the second time (quarterfinals). It would have been fun to have North in League One this season. All those defensive minded teams and strong goaltending working hard to manage Willows. They would have likely finished 3rd or fourth (right before or after WP who they split with) and just ahead of Rye and Pelham-who tied for 4th. Then, the top 6 teams in League One would all have been state ranked at season’s end. Can the ADs please see the beauty of the power league system for hockey.

  58. Forget all the rest....

Thanks LoHud, no stats but a lil info. Any idea who the players to watch are?

  59. Al Bundy

fotg – CN also beat WP in the WP tournament.

That said, by the end of the year WP was a better team than CN.

I’d guess a 3rd place finish in league 1 off a very strong start of the season. By the end of the year teams got better at game planning CN.

Thats history now and will provide some nice off-season blog conversation. This week belongs to Mamaroneck and Pelham. Bring back those championships to the section!

  60. all section teams

Anyone want to take a stab at making an all section team (with 1st team 2nd team Honorable Mentions) for our section. But go with D1 and then D2, like the all state format.

  61. GO PELHAM!! GO MAMARONECK!!

The Pelham boys are on the road up to Utica now! Get a good night sleep, practice well tomorrow, and kick butt on Burke on Saturday.
Not sure when Mamaroneck goes up (tomorrow?) but “Go get ‘em, boys!”

Can’t wait to see them both bring home the hardware!!

Forget all the rest- here is the skinny on Burke. Have 3 very good players, but not a lot of depth.

Top scorer- Healey #7 shifty, quick forward with a scoring touch.

Top support forward- Reinfried #23- good size and speed and plays a rugged game.

Goalie- Walkefield #33- rangy quick goalie. Can steal a game.

All 3 were either Empire players or alternates this past summer.

  68. CN Fan 2

While CN did play in League 2, let’s not forget that besides maybe Brewster and Mount Pleasant, League 2 was actually pretty decent – ETB, North Rockland, Scarsdale are all tough teams. And they also beat Pelham, WP, Monroe-Woodbury, etc. this season. Bottomline – they would have finished 3rd in League 1 this year – still probably in the top 10 in the state.

Let’s not forget that League 1 had John Jay and Rye/Town Harrison – which you could certainly argue are worse than any league 2 team So think before you blame CN for a “weak schedule”.

  71. hockey

I happen to have played for suffern on the 1992 team. It was a great for Suffern and all of section 1. To see how some people react to our induction is pretty poor. I would love to see both Mamaroneck and Pelham win this weekend so they can experience the feeling. It was a moment that will last forever. Allow the team and fans to enjoy this.

    To hockey,
Don’t let a couple bloggers bother you. You gotta take each entry with a grain of salt. YOu have rabid fans, bitter rivals, and some nut jobs that blog just to try and tweak people. The suffern championship is epic, the only section 1 championship ever. I don’t know if Pelham or Mamaroneck can win it this year, but regardless… you can’t think that a few bloggers represent the vast majority. I am sure Mamaroneck and Pelham will be applauding as loud as anyone when you guys are honored.
Nobody can ever take that away from you guys…. champs for life.

  74. Far North

Suffern you had a great win that year and what made it better is no one expected you to win…and you proved them wrong. With Mamaroneck this year everyone expects them to win if they lose they will feel like Massena did that year. Suffern did what no one expected them to do that year even after the semi’s. They were the only ones that believed they could do it and they went out and got it done. In saying that I certainly would like to see Mamo win!

  75. Mamk high school

I am not so sure that Mamaroneck will be the favored team if they play the #1 team Greece Athena who is undefeated all year. Mamaroneck would not be MAJOR underdogs, but they would be underdogs nonetheless.
By the way, I heard that some Mamaroneck people wanted to hire the Massena radio guys to do the radio play by play in Utica. So many people really loved it. Too bad we cant get a tape of it.
The internet video feed is ok, but it is really hard to follow the action, especially with no play by play commentating. I don’t think I am alone when I say I would rather have internet radio than really choppy video. But hey, it is a lot better than nothing.

  76. LMC-TV

LMC-TV will be tape-delaying Mamaroneck’s game/s, they will air next weekend (Friday-Sunday) starting at 8pm on channel 77 (Cablevision subscribers), 34 if you have verizon.

You must be in Mamaroneck/Larchmont to see the broadcasts if you have Cablevision, Verizon subscribers can see the action from anywhere in Southern Westchester.

Any true sports fan would be happy to see the 1992 Suffern Team honored between games. As one of Mamaroneck’s toughest opponents, your accomplishments elevate all of us. Mamaroneck fans salute you. I finally found the video on YouTube at: 92TitleVictory.

I hope to see Mamaroneck (and Pelham) on that same mountaintop Sunday.

  79. hockeyy

What jumps out at me from the Burke schedule is the loss to Scarsdale.

  80. LoHud Hockey

Apparently New Hartford has their game broadcast on radio & the Internet. So should Pelham & NH win on Saturday and face eachother in the finals, you can listen to the game here: http://www.wibx950.com

If you open the radio broadcast in one window and the Journal News’ video feed in another, you could actually listen & watch together (although sometimes when you do stuff like that there is the potential of a slight delay so the audio may be a second ahead of the video or vice versa)

  82. here we go again....l

    Glaser = Winner
He eats big wins for dinner and poops out regional championships, tournaments champiosnhips, league championships, sectional championships and final 4’s.
Maybe someones mom should get back off the blog.

  83. hockeyy

Dzenis on D has to be somewhere on that list.

  84. Not South of the Canadian Border

Another thing jumping out is Burke lost twice to Iona Prep which was an average team at best this year with marginal goaltending. I am sure Burke has made enough adjustments to be a factor. I have to figure if Pelham plays their game that they would be able to beat Burke but on any day any team can win. I got to think no matter what Burke comes with Flory and Pelham will prevail.

  85. all section

Here we go again, since you are so objective and feel the players on the best team are all the best players maybe the all-section team should look something like this, you are an idiot, go back to class.

    1 Matthew Weiner G 11
    3 Dean Chiapparelli F 10
    6 Nick Plett D 10
    8 Robby Gardiner F 10

    91 Michael Meglio F 12

  86. fanotgame

I will do my All Section list next week, afte our Section champs conclude their seasons this weekend. But, I think it is simply the top 14 players, regardless of position. Since this is the first season there will be an All Section team, I am not sure whether it will be the top 14 players in the Section, or whether it will be broken out like the All State teams, that is, one DI All Section team and a separate DII All Section team. Maybe Harold, LoHud or Mr Orlando can give us some insight on that point.

  87. all section

Here we go again…! I guess we should take willows and shuman off the list also, according to you they are NOT winners. No section, regional championships, final 4’s

  88. Al Bundy

Gabriel is a great goaltender, but I have to go with Glaser as first team. Maybe it’s a “career” award but you can’t ignore his 2 section titles and especially last years pressure packed SOR victory over a great Suffern team.

To be consistent, last year I always said that Natoli was the top goalie over Reagan, partly because of his tremendous junior year performance in Suffern’s run to the state semi-final. The o/t loss against Ithaca’s Andy Iles (NTDP) was particularly impressive.

Goalies, more than other hockey positions, earn their grades and make their names in big games.

  89. tough one

Good points Al, but you can also say that in the 6 losses and 2 ties suffern had, they scored a total of 8 goals and were shut-out 4 times, tough for a goalie to do anything when the team doesn’t score. While Mamorneck scored 9 goals in their 2 losses and one tie. So Suffern averaged 1 goal a game in their losses and ties and Mamoroneck averaged 3. So if you say that a goalies main job is to keep a their team in the game and give them a chance to win, you may have to go with Gabriel. Tough call, either one would be ok with me as first team all whatever.

  90. head to head

head to head matchups Glaser Vs. Gabriel in 2 games against each other.
Glaser 46 saves on 49 shots
Gabriel 77 saves on 81 shots

Difference, Glaser is the winner in the game that counted the most.

  91. Chico Resch

    Listen,
nobody is here to rip a kid, but if you really think that Gabriel is nearly the athlete Glaser is, you dont know sports. Not only has he won big game after big game, but he is also a starting 3rd baseman on the state champion baseball team.
Glaser is an outstanding athlete who is fundamentally sound.
Gabriel is fundamentally sound, and an average athlete.
Also, Glaser is superior at corraling rebounds, something that Gabriel has a major problem with… however Sufferns outstanding defenseman were great at covering up that flaw.
Bottom line is Gabriel was a very good high school goalie, nothing to be ashamed of… however he has no hardware whatsoever, and was outplayed by the WHite Plains goalie the last 2 times they played, and lost to Mamk (outplayed by Glaser) in the league championship game, and tied them. Not much of a resume’. You can toss the numbers any way you want, sufferns defensive stats are a direct result of their style and their team defense… not their goaltending.

  92. Harold Gutmann

    fanotgame,
It’s the best 14 players, regardless of position.

  93. baseball??

Not sure how a kids baseball team gets into this conversation but ok.

  94. suffern

“and lost to Mamk (outplayed by Glaser) in the league championship game….”

shots were something like 38-16, not sure how you can say “outplayed by Glaser”

  95. Al Bundy

On that subject, the best athlete in the section is Joe Marasco. High level hockey and football player, and All-American lax. However, this doesn’t merit him first team in hockey.

  96. Al Bundy

It is splitting hairs, but the nod goes to Glaser.

Same thing last year with Reagan and Natoli. Although some statistics and junior league scouting reports (best athlete!) could have been construed to favor Reagan, I felt Natoli top goalie due to his big game performance.

  97. suffern

according to Chico we should have a contest in every sport from hockey to ping pong, and the winners will be all the all section players. very good idea Chico. Maybe we should have them compete in the decathlon, that would be a great judge of who the best hockey players are.

  98. fanotgame

    Harold,

I was aware the All Section team was the best 14 players regardless of position. My question was whether there will be separate DI and DII All Section teams (of the best 14 players in each division) or just one combined DI/DII All Section team. In essence, will you have 14 All Section players, or 28 All Section players?

  99. Harold Gutmann

    sorry fanotgame,
There will be 14 players, total.

  100. Jungle Land

    Suffern,
It is pathetic how you can’t see a point.
A great athlete can excel in many sports, however, we have seen plenty of man made goalies. Goalies whose parents spent an absurd amount of money on goalie camps, clinics, private tutors just so junior can become a decent high school goalie. And become a mechanical/robot type goalie.
However, you cant teach athleticism, heart, reflexes, quickness, and mental toughness (like NOT letting up goals with under 20 seconds left 2 years in a row)... most of which is god given… and Glaser has all that.
The object as a goalie is to win… not hide behind team oriented stats and lose every single significant game all season long, and then claim to be the best. Every goalie including glaser would have loved to play behind that defense that suffern had this year.
