Pelham/Mamaroneck scoring updates

March
15

Pelham-New Hartford

End of first period: New Hartford leads 3-0. Shots are 19-9 NH. Gavin Lambdin did all he could to keep the game scoreless after 10 minutes, but the Spartans erupted for three goals in the final 4:16, including two goals 14 seconds apart. Pelham has been behind in every playoff game so far, but it never gave up that second goal until now. Pelham does have 1:05 remaining on the power play to try and get something going.

End of second period: New Hartford leads 6-1. Shots are 36-17. The Spartans scored three more times in the first eight minutes of the period, making it six goals in 12 minutes. Pelham finally got one back on a nice shot by Colin Reilly from just inside the left faceoff circle, assisted by Mark Hernandez and Victor Dzenis.

Final: New Hartford wins 6-1. Shots are 49-24. That’s more shots and goals than Mamaroneck could get against Pelham in either game — the Spartans are clearly one of the top teams in the state, DI or DII.

All-state update: Marc Flory was named first-team all-state, the first player in Pelham history to receive that honor. Also, Victor Dzenis was named second-team all-state defense.

Mamaroneck-Greece Athena

End of first period: Mamaroneck leads 2-1. Shots are 10-4 Mk. The Tigers will start with a 5-on-3 for 57 seconds when the second period starts. Sean Hagan fed it to Scott Hagan in front for a power play goal three minutes in. Two minutes later, Rob Fine passed across the crease to Christian Glaser, who deflected t in. Greece got one back with 8:55 left when leading scorer Riley Bourbonnais knocked in a pass across the slot. 11 penalties so far (7 on Greece). Greece star defenseman Erik Gunderson was given a 7:30 misconduct and still has 3:30 left.

End of second period: Tied 2-2. Total shots 15-14 Mk. Greece tied the game with 5:15 left when Bourbonnais stole the puck at the blue line and passed to Greg Ryan for the goal. It will be 4-on-4 for 1:07 when we start the third period. Mamaroneck has worn teams down all season and now will try to do it one more time in the biggest game of their program’s history.

Final: Greece wins 3-2. Final shots 24-20 Thunder. J.T. Steglein scored a power-play goal with 4:12 left.

All-state update: Section 1 had three all-state players. State record-holder Matt Willows of Clarkstown North, and two from Mamaroneck, repeat selection Sean Hagan and goalie Luke Glaser. Brett Jackson made second team.

MVP update: Hagan wins Division I player of the year.

What is going on? I certainly hope Mamaroneck puts up a better fight than this.

  2. new hartford

this is a good team they would oontend in d1 forsure not pelham or any d2 team on a good day would even contend with them

  3. Fan

    Horrible

  4. sec1fan2

whoever stated that southern hockey was on the rise is completely wrong i am finding it hard to not laugh at the pathetic pelicans at this point

  5. Fan

It looks like Squirt team is playing a midget team !

  6. fanotgame

C’mon guys. Give Pelham credit where it is due. They are playing a team that could win the DI title and doing it without Rivera and a compromised Emerson. Witz has been doing it with a very short bench all season. You need all your regulars for that to work against a deep team like NH. Keep your heads up high Pelicans.

  7. wheres sec1fa*

look on the brightside…atleast its not 10-1…YET hahahaha

  8. woooo

YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH NEW HARTFORD!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WAAAAAAAAAYYYY TOOO GOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. 13thman

sec1fan is at the game, where are you?

Tough loss for pelham, but when New Hartford had four 1st team all state players and pelham had 1 (and 1 2nd team) they were pretty heavy underdogs coming in. Pretty crushing to come all this way and lose the final game though…

  10. Fan

Pelham deserves credit for getting to the final but NEW Hartford plays at a different level . Congrats to the Champs!

  11. Far Noth

If they truly divide hockey based on strength of program they missed the boat with NH they are as good as any DI team playing this weekend. Pelham had a great year and have an excellent program congrats on an outstanding season.

  12. REALISTIC

Every kid that plays hockey knows that no matter how good you think you are there is always a higher level above you.

Pelham went as far as there talent level could take them, which was pretty good,(The state finals)
Pelham run into a team that was far above average for a D2 school and had a roster that was loaded.Even though Pelham lost they can say they skated against the best NY had to offer.2nd best in D2!!! I’ll take that.Great year Pelham.
    Congrats to New Hartford.

  13. league 2 fan

Congrats to Pelham. Be very proud of what you have done. Ed Witz deserves a lot of credit. Great program!

  19. Kevin

Looks like the refs are calling it tight, but that appears to be a benefit to the Tigers

  20. Biscuit and Stick

The AD Bari Suman sounds like a boob on the radio side. She can’t even describe the community.

  21. Biscuit and Stick

Hey, How about the players decide who wins instead of the referees!!!!!

Enough with the penalties, it is a championship game, LET THE PLAYERS PLAY!!!!!

Terrible give away by the Tiger Defensemen 2-2 game

  23. Kevin

  31. Kevin

@ Hockey Fan – It’s hard to see the details in the webcast, but with 4 penalties on Jackson I gotta agree he needs to get it together or sit.

  46. over

sad it had to end on a brutal goal

  47. Hockey Fan

Bret Jackson should not of been placedd on second team all state. I would of had FIne in instead of hime,. Fine had a better state finals.

  48. Mahopac Fan

I agree…..4 penalties giveme a break! Have a nice LONG bus ride home

  49. time left?

    time and score?

  50. SECTION 1

No Excuses but REFS please let the kids decide the game next time.

    great season Mamk!!!

  51. giants hater

congratulations to both Pelham and Mamaroneck on a wonderful
season. great job for getting this far. This is comming from a Suffern graduate back in 85. Congratulations to both teams.

  52. Hockey Fan

    SECTION 1,

Don’t blame the refs for those Stupid penalties that Jackson took! Chaps should of BENCHED him! I don’t know the total number of penalties between the two teams but I think they were pretty even.

It’s a shame…we had them 2 to 0 and then we let them back into the game. Two power play goals cost us “BIG TIME”!

  53. Suff#1

    Ice Hockey State Championships

    Suffern-1
    Mamaroneck-0

  54. mam'k alum

Congrats to Mam’k and Pelham. Great job by Chap and Witz. Two of the best men in Westchester. The kids played hard and did us proud.

  55. West Chest

“Great Run” nothing else to be said for both teams. congrats to Luke “the best goalie to ever play at mamk ever” Glaser and Sean Hagen a class act.

  56. hockey

great seasons Mamaroneck and Pelham! You both did a great job representing Section 1! it was an overall, unexpecting, yet enjoyable season by all teams!

  57. That Guy

about how many ppl were at each championship game?

  58. question

    Hey Chap,

Who’s the best athlete all time from Richbell Rd. (Lance Kelly, Bosco, Lapham, Ponticello, Hagen etc…)?
By the way West Chest. Those are your two best goalies out of Mamaroneck. Learn your history. Ask Chap and Bruno if you don’t believe me.

  59. Haha

Lance Kelly / Jay Lapham I would say are equal, Glaser kid is better. Ponticello good QB, but the best Athlete to ever come out of Richbell was Marcel Galligani, the WP HS Baseball Coach formerly in the Oakland A’s

  60. question

Oh damn. Great one. How did I leave out Galligani

  61. pelican power

some questionable calls by the refs, and it got pretty annoying when they were calling every small infraction with like 4 minutes left, but as it turned out, we played against a team of 1st team All staters
    good season pelham

  62. Richbell Rats

I always wondered why Richbell kids are the best athletes in Mamaroneck….
    1. Walters Hot Dogs – Secret sauce…Really growth hormones.
    2. Backyard Space – Their backyard is the MHS practice field, track and baseball field.
    3. Toughness – Always a bunch of kids older than you trying to beat you up when growing up.
    4. Speed / Endurance – See #3
    5. Thick Skin – Playing tackle football on asphalt front lots makes you tough!

  63. Richbell Rats

Congrats Mam’k you were a great team to follow over the years, Seniors good luck in the future.

  64. sec1 fan

I just got back from Utica.
I have to say, NH is by far the best team that I’ve seen Pelham play in the past 2 years. They had 4 kids who were faster than Dzenis, who some would say is the fastest in section 1. Their defensemen were big, strong and fast, Flory couldn’t over power them to the outside like he usually does. Lambdin had 49 shots on him, which is an absurd number. Pelham had a great season, they accomplished something no one from Pelham has ever done, but unfortunately they were met by a superior team.
Congrats to Marc Flory on being named to the all-tournament team, as well as 1st team all-state.
Congratulations to Victor Dzenis, who was named second team all-state.

  65. Larchmont

The Tigers got what they deserved…....SECOND PLACE…. It’s going to be a very long off season… Wha Wha Wha

  66. Ta-Da

Larchmont – Its better than all the rest of the teams that played hockey this year, except one other team…
Nothing to be ashamed of…. No time to dwell on their off season,Monday starts baseball for some of these kids and I am sure their goal is to be the Defending State Champ.

  67. Section 1 Fan

First off, major hats off to the Pelham Pelicans and the Mamaroneck Tigers for letting the rest of the state know that Section 1 has real hockey. You have to know that kids come out of the womb upstate with skates of their feet….

Second, Luke Glaser did an outstanding job at keeping the score against Greece-Athena to only 3 – 2. Mamo played a great game, but the reality is the better team won, and really put the heat on Glaser. Final shots were 24 – 20, but man… most of those 24 were kick arse…

    GO TIGERS!! GO PELICANS!!

  68. Section 1 Fan

sorry – - Skates “on” their feet.

To “Larchmont” (an obvious poor pseudonym) – - stick it where the sun don’t shine and then turn it sideways.

  69. puck14

    suff#1-
I’ve been watching section 1 hockey for a long time, but have no connections to Suffern or Mamaroneck. Your attitude stinks.
    May I remind you:
Trips to the Final Four in the CURRENT CENTURY: Mamaroneck – more than Suffern!

  70. question

puck what years has mamo made final four this century?

  71. Hockey Fan

wow greece has some of the worst fans that i could imagine…Shouting out loser to all the mamk players right after the game. Have some class your team just won the state title..the only losers were greece’s fans…Great game by the two best d1 teams

  72. Viola Rd

Jeesssshhhh!!! What an ugly crowd!!! People gloating about Mamo and Pelham losses??? That’s poor. I know as a Suffern fan and a staunch Section 1 fan…I was rooting like hell for both teams. I was gutted when Greece scored that late goal. I’m sick and tired of those ignorant upstaters always belittling downstate hockey. I wanted a State title for Section 1!!! Congrats to Mamo and Pelham…what a ride. Those kids have nothing to hang their heads for. I’m just wondering when Section 1 will get a state of the art Hockey facility that can host a state tourney (aside from WPoint) I’d like to see the upstate crowd travel 5 hours plus, sleep in a hotel, and be the outsiders in every sense of the word and see if it has any effect on their game. I had to turn off the radio coverage of the games. I heard they were professional like announcers. They were nothing more than cheerleaders…shouting and screaming for their home teams. Calling players by their nicknames and questioning the schedules and quality of downstate teams. Totally unprofessional. Anyway, Congrats to Mamo and Pelham..great job.

  73. Graduation

Getting back to the final four may be tough next year for section 1, D1 and D2 teams.
Mamaroneck and Pelham lose 11 kids each
RYE,WP,SUFF,OSS,CN, All lose 8 or more kids each

Maybe Mahopac,SH/I,OR ETB WHO LOSE 4 or less can step up?

I still think the big name teams with great programs will be good but not final four good.

We might be back to normal next year???

  74. hockeyfan

In my opinion, this is the most enjoyable time on the blog. People have stopped worrying about their kids, or an excuse about how their team is so much better than another, and have started rooting for the section as a whole. Graduation is talking about who will step up and represent the section well upstate next year. Mamaroneck and Pelham, both of you deservingly represented section one well and made the section proud.

  75. suffern1

This game was very similar to the game Suffern played against Greece at the Liverpool tournament. Up 2-0 and it looked like we scored to make it 3-0 only to have it waived off. Then Greece got a lucky bounce and then they just chipped away until they went up 3-2 with five minutes to go. They added an emptey netter to make it 4-2. I believe we had 34 shots, the most any team put on them all season and they had 46 on us.

After the first 5 minutes I thought Mamo was going to dominate! If you told me that Mamo would only end up with 20 shots I would have told you that you were crazy! That has to be their lowest total of the season. Penalties hurt Mamo on both sides of play. Unable to get shots on goal and giving up 2 PP goals really was their undoing.

  76. nh pelham

clearly new hartford is the best team in the state dI and dII. I watched both games and it was clear that new hartord was just on another level than any of eight teams that came to Utica. Bigger, faster, stronger, and played a great system of hockey. congrats to both section 1 teams. great seasons and even without the hardware they represented our section very well.

  77. BEst Section 1 year ever

This was the first time ever that a SEction 1 D1 and D2 teams made it to the championship game. Pelham had a great season and were beaten by an outstanding team.
Mamaroneck had their chances, and their loss was hard to swallow. This game was a coin flip and Greece made more of the chances that they had. Mamaroneck had an amazing season winning all their tournaments, the league title with 15 seconds left against suffern, and repeated for their second straight section 1, D1 title. Mamaroneck has 25 kids on their JV (the only program to have JV) and 25 kids on their modified teams… they don’t rebuild….they just reload.

  78. fanotgame

To Graduation- Mamo and Suffern are hockey factories. They will both reload and have strong teams next year. Rye loses a lot in numbers, including a top goalie and dman. But, they return their top 2 forward lines intact, plus one skater from the third line. They have the #1 and #4 returning League One scorers. They return 4 dmen who all played significant time plus two strong skating dmen from the modified program. The Garnets will be very deep with skating talent next year. Latest rumor is Garnets may get a goalie back from Avon JV who was not much different than Benincasa when he left Rye for prep 3 years back. Benny blossemed the last 2 seasons, but I am sure they get good coaching at Avon, also. I do think WP, Pac and L/P will also be strong. How will ETB do if Hagen plays Junior A and is prohibited from playing HS? Can Gluck and Olivario carry a still young Scarsdale deeper into the playoffs next season? Pelham loses their goalie plus a ton of scoring, but have Dzenis and Harms on the blue line and Witz will find a way to make the Pelicans competitive with the remaining parts. Should be another great season for Section One hockey.

  79. true about Richbell

Watched both Section 1 teams on both days. Pelham was Pelham on Saturday playing that good defense, The call on #27 was one of the worst I have seen. Ref was obviously nervous and I think the call was very early in the game. That loss hurt Pelham on Sunday. New Hartford was perhaps the best team out of the 8 that were there and had control early. Mamaronecks loss was tough to swallow as they had the early lead and could not hold it. looked like Greece was playing a short bench and I thought Tigers could take advantage. Glaser was outstanding on both days. Hagen was the best D man. One bounce for Mamaroneck late could have got the tie and maybe a shot in OT. No regrets as both teams went really far. I thought Mamaroneck had a real strong chance this year. I am actually surprised that they are coming home without the title. The Pelham coach lived on Richbell Rd the first four or maybe five years that he was coaching at Pelham thats pretty funny

  80. Pelican Flash

Hats off to the pelham players for an outstanding season. the team and staff worked so hard to make this a super year. the “real” fans deserve a big hand for their loyalty throughout the whole season. anybody can jump on the bandwagon halfway through the playoffs. mamone, marc flory, gavin, matt, 3 andrews, adrian, skyler, will all be missed. special congrats go out to flory and dzenis for their all-state accomplishment. #21 is one of the nicest kids you will ever meet in your life. his partner, #2 was also just off the charts with his play this season and is the best backchecker i watched all year in addition to the points he put up. sec1 fan, phil, and katie king had a great season and their enthusiasm for the game was appreciated by the players. the hockey moms and alumni moms were out in force in utica as they were all year for pelham. ed witz continues to get the most out of his teams year after year and it is great to see him get his 300th win during this tremendous season.
special congrats too go out to the mamaroneck team for a spectacular season. chappy is a hell of a guy and his kids really worked so hard in the final, a game that went down to the last second.
anybody who would go on the blog to say anything negative about a team or player in utica this weekend is lower than a low-life individual. again, congrats to the players of both pelham and mamaroneck; you represented the section well and gave a lot of people great memories that will last forever. thanks….... pelican flash.

  81. Al Bundy

Watched the webcast of the Mamo game and came away very impressed with the Greece team. There sophomore skater Riley Buorbanais (sic) controlled the tempo. This kid seems to be prep or juniors bound, based on the radio side interview with him.

Interesting interview with the Greece AD also on the radiocast. It seems that the Greece school district has 2 high schools, each with a hockey team, but that the Greece/Athena championship team contains players from both schools. Maybe I heard this wrong, but I always thought you had to at least attend the school to participate on one of its teams.

  82. Sec 1 Fan

Congrats to Mamk program. They had trouble getting any sustained push in the 2nd and 3rd periods until last 5 mins of the game. Greece first team to out hit them all season.

Shame the season ends on a fluke goal. That game was destined for OT – too bad for fans it did not happen.

Great testament to lower Westchester hockey to have two schools so close to each other in the state finals.

Congrats to Chap, the coaching staff and the extended Mamk hockey family. A special congrats to Sean who is not only a tremendous player, but a great person. Good luck this spring.

  83. True ???

Very strong rumor has it that Dzenis and Harms have played their last games for Pelham . Both off to Prep school….....not surprised

  84. RICHBELL RD.

We need a Richbell Rd. Tough man award.

If Witz really lived on Richbell Rd. It can be a Pelham or Mam’k player.
