I’ll be back later Monday with more from Utica, and hopefully a picture-filled year in review. Also on Wednesday I’ll have a report from the all-section/all-league meeting, which hopefully will include an update on the league alignment.

Congratulations are in order to Mamaroneck and Pelham for reaching the State Finals. It was not an easy task to do so and it took a series of good wins to accomplish that feat.
Section 1 is very proud of both squads that handled themselves like true champions through out the tournament.
I would also like to say that the fans came out in mass from our area to support their teams and for that we in the HS hockey world are grateful.
The people at West Point were amazed at the competitive level of our section finals and went out of their way to note the enthsiasm of the players and fans and the sportsmanship displayed by everyone involved.
Congratulations to both Mamaroneck and Pelham. Their players and fans were great, and did not succumb to the obnoxiousness of the other teams. Congratulations to all the players that played their hearts out all year and who represented Section 1 well. I have to say, the New Hartford crowd was the worst. The student section turned their backs to the ice when Pelham was introduced. Unfortunately, they were right above the penalty boxes and relentlessly heckled whomever was in the box. They were awful. If I were their AD, I would be embarrassed. And as for the NH coach getting coach of the year? What kind of coach allows their team to have a post game goal celebration where their goalie comes out to the blue line and taunts the other teams bench? And allows their players to skate right in front of the oppositions bench to high five their team mates? Disgusting display of unsportsmanlike conduct. Such a talented and amazing team shouldn’t have the need for such antics. They proved it on the ice, they dominated. So why pull that crap? Can you imagine Ed Witz ever allowing that? NO WAY! John Cunningham, Section Three Coordinator and tournament director, loved mentioning that he was a New Hartford graduate etc, etc and the fact that he played golf with the NH coach when he called him up for Coach of the Year.. Not too appropriate. Just classless all around.
When will the all section teams be announced?
Hockey….
Kind of the same thing that happens at the Hommocks when anyone plays Mamo.
Wow, 2 Greece SOPHMORES made all state? That’s impressive.
Im very sad to say that i think mamk will be nothing like they were this year. Its just way to hard to be a VERY good team with out a outstanding goaltender like Luke Glaser. Unless chappy can find a good goalie for next year they will have a very tough time even winning the section….Luke should be the player of the year, all due respect to Hagan but look at Suffern when Natoli graduated, they became a middle of the pact team. The goalie is by far the most important possession on the ice. Congratulation Tiger, you made me proud this year
Mammk I agree with you about goaltending, it is by far the most important position on the ice, you can have an awsesome offense and defense but if you have a bad goalie you are not winning the important games.
I never buy into exagerated those tales that the “other” team fans, coaches and players are classless and low-lifes.
These games are very emotional. One side will expierience an uplifting victory, the other usually a disappointing defeat.
Their are usually a handful of yahoos (players and fans) on both sides, but the great amount of participants are pretty good sports. Afterall, this is hockey, not european soccer!
I’ll give you that there are some stupid fans and stupid kids in the stands, but how do you explain the coach allowing his players to celebrate their goals in front of the opponents bench? Why did the ref have to reprimand the NH goalie, instead of the coach ? Tacky, yes, I’ll say it again…CLASSLESS.
Sean H. is not the first section 1 player to recieve the honor of player of the year. Tommy Natoli and Matt Willows had the title 2 years ago. Congrats to both section 1 teams they all played great games and should be proud.
Congrats to Section One’s All State players. Well deserved.
Here is my list for All Section (in order):
1. Willows
2. Flory
3. Hagan

Glaser
Hagan
Jackson
Hiller
Norwin
Gabriel
Flory
Dzenis
Pretty sure, Dan Culhane won that award back in 1993 for Mamaroneck, also played defense.
Mark Flory…...Hands down!
Wrong…in 2007 Sean Seyler of Ithaca was the division 1 player of the year. Hagan is the first section 1 player to receive the honor.
Ta-Da…the award started in 1996
wrong…no Suffern players made All State…Willows from CN made it…you forgot him.
Were the three Suffern players listed above honorable mentions for All State this season?
Yes they were honorable mention and I am sorry I forgot Willow, not like he’s the best player in the section or anything.
In 2007 Willows and Natoli won section 1 D-1 co-players of the year not NY State D-1 player of the year.
jjjeeessshhh, first I leave him off the list then I can’t spell his name… MATT WILLOWS FIRST TEAM ALL-STATE..
Hey Suffern, Honorable Mention is just that an honerable mention. NOT ALL STATE.
Didn’t see Hiller, Norwin or Gabriel listed anywhere on the All-State team? Did they get honorable mention? Where is that list?
Thanks for the clarification CN, so to all the suffern kids and every other kid who was named honorable mention, forget my congratulations on being all-state you don’t deserve it. At least we all know the season is officially over and we can put away our fur coats for good.
I am 99% sure they made Honorable mention but have not seen the list either. I would like to see it in writing also and if I am wrong I will take my beatings on here.
There is no list. Suffern again tried to share the spot light and accidently left Willows off of the list.
Harold,
Was there any Honorable Mentions for All-State?
It’s not about you Suffern!!!!!
Yes CN, that is exactly what my intent was, man you are smart! As a Suffern person there is no way I was actually trying to say congratulations to everyone on a great year. I must have lost my head for a second and forgot it is all about Suffern. Thanks for your help.
and by the way, I Dont OWN a Fur Coat!

Thanks LoHud. We can always count on you to clear things up.
I thought the New Hartford fans were ok, they were just enthusiastic… but when your team is getting pasted it just stings a little more and seems worse than what it is. Besides a couple of parents the Greece fans were fine too. Mamaroneck should have shut them up for good in the first period but could not deliver the defining blow.
When it was all said and done, both teams had their best seasons ever. As for next year… I don’t think there is any clear cut favorite… but I do know that it will again be Mamaroneck, Suffern, White Plains, Pelham and Rye. I don’t see Clarkstown North being competitive ever again. And we will again hear the second tier teams chirping about how this year they will make the leap… but most likely it won’t happen.
Hey Suffern, Honorable Mention is just that an honerable mention. NOT ALL STATE.
There is no list.
Not only is there a list, but Shuman is on it, should he not receive any credit for All-State Honorable Mention either? Grow up and just congratulate all the kids on the list, including Suffern.
I can’t believe the West Genesee goaltender made second team all state. He was absolutely awful against Greece, letting in 4 goals on his first 6 shots, 3 of them a mite goalie would have stopped easily.
I know that the state winning coach usually wins coach of the year, but the Greece coach was fired mid season, then re-hired. He was canned for getting plastered drunk during an overnight trip with his team…to the point of passing out. The school lowered it to a suspension, great role model coach… taught the kids one thing. JUST WIN… everything else doesnt matter.
CN-Suffern truce. This should happen.
The day should still be about the excellent seasons of Mamoroneck and Pelham.
Their is a long off-season to discuss all this.
I’m looking for some clarification on the Greece/Athena roster situation.
On the radio side webcast the Greece/Athena AD being interviewed said that the district has 2 high schools, both with hockey teams. However, this Greece/Athena team contains players attending both schools.
Did I hear this correctly? If so, would that be akin to kids attending Clarkstown South playing hockey for Clarkstown North, even though South had a team..
Please someone clarify for me if I am wrong.
Lohud- any Sec One DII honorable mentions? Would like to see Benincasa get a nod.
It worked that time. Harold, let your guys now their filter is too sensitive. Burd!ck is not offensive.
fanotgame-
See above, I was posting it for the 3rd time as you wrote it. The Journal News’ site is too touchy about certain four-letter combinations, even though it is not a stand alone word, it happens to be four out of seven letters in a kid’s name.
fanotgame, I agree Benencasa could very easily been on the D2 list. I don’t see him, thats too bad, I hope he was at least mentioned, he deserves it.
Al-
There are four High Schools in the Greece Central School District. It is HUGE (about 1200 kids per grade across the district). They used to have all four high schools merged onto one team years ago, but in recent years have split off into two teams. The four schools are Arcadia High School, Athena High School, Olympia High School, and Odessy Academy. The Greece Lightning hockey team is comprised of kids from Arcadia High School & Olympia High School and the Greece Thunder team (the one that just won the state title) is Athena High School & Odessy Academy. That’s why sometimes you hear them referred to as Greece, sometimes Greece Thunder, and sometimes Greese Athena/Odessy.
Congrats to all the All – State players. What a tremendous honor. Section 1 proved to be the most competitive and deepest section in the state with the most ranked teams and 2 team in the finals. Looks like the most all-state players section 1 has ever had and they all deserve it.
Hey it would be nice to see a list of the 1st, 2nd, and HM teams from D1 and D2 showing the player, section, position, and grade. Harold maybe this could be put in the paper or at least on the blog.
Congrats to all – what a great season! Can’t wait to next season!
Wow these dopes had an opportunity to nickname themselves Greece Lightning, and they chose thunder? They would have had Grease Lightning as their theme song and everything. I still don’t get how Greeceand Athena merge… do they merge in every sport? or just hockey?
IS this the first time a merger program won the state?
Greece Thunder?-
See the post above. Greece Lightning is already taken by the other two schools in the district. So the next logical choice for a team name, would be the Thunder. This sets up an annual Thunder/Lightning game, much like we have the annual North/South game over in Rockland County.
And to answer your other question, the only other merged team to win states was in 1996 when Greece (All four schools combined) won the D1 title.
Keeping to the topic of Greece HS, here is a little story some may have seen before. I think it is a couple of years old but may teach us all a little something about HS sports..

Great season all. Kudos to Mamaroneck and Pelham for great runs in the States. COngrtas to all Section 1 players on the All-State teams.
Best Section 1 hockey season in a long time. Very competitive games, lots of great talent in ALL leagues. Best of luck to all Seniors in all future endeavors.
Do we know when All Section and All County awards are coming out?
Very strong rumor has it that Dzenis and Harms have played their last games for Pelham . Both off to Prep school….....not surprised
Dan Culhane did get some kind of award for state player of the year. He might have had to turn it in on his trip upstate(to jail).
I thought Tortorella won player of the year in ‘98.
quesion… u are obnoxious, Dan Culhane was not the mamo alumli that went to jail, it was a different guy and his name is not relevant to this blog, so before you start accusing people like that you better know what your talking about or keep your mouth SHUT!
I think it is wonderful that Sean Hagan was named Div 1 Player of the Year, but I’m a bit confused. I think most people didn’t consider him to be the besst player on his own team or even the best defenseman in our Section. Does anyone have any insight as to how he impressed the rest of the State so that he is more highly regarded outside his own Section than within Section 1?
Mamaroneck had an insane season! They had the state player of the year, no other team can say that in section 1.
Actually Mamaornek had 2 great seasons in a row. They should be so proud of what they did, it may hurt now, but in a few years it will sink in that they were the best (in my opinion) hockey team in section 1 history.
r u kidding,
People can just google his name and Mamaroneck and they can find out what happened. NOt sure why you are defending that low life.
Has nothing to do with the blog, but don’t lie to protect a guy like that.
OK,
Mamaroneck had a great year, but to say they were the best team in D1 history is pushing it just a little bit. There are probably better Mamk teams based on players moving on to D1 than the current team, and the Rye teams from the early 80’s would have spanked them- probably could right now.
Never know if kids are leaving for Prep or not but it seems to happen to Pelham every year. Not sure how it has panned out for the the kids who have left Pelham for prep school. Not sure if anything they do in prep can match what Pelham has done lately unless they are playing tons on the prep team. Pelham gets lots of practice ice plenty of exposure and play all over the state, seems like a pretty good deal in southern westchester if you ask me. If they go sure Pelham will do what they always do and bounce back from the losses
The teams of the 80’s are nowhere as good as todays teams. and Rye of the 80’s were a bunch of cheaters, getting staropoli from New Ro, and Collins from White Plains. Anything Rye did with Zegras is tainted, and everyone from Rye back then knows it.
This years Mamk team took an undefeated team to the brink. Rye was embarassed in the championship game 7-0.
Local hockey is way better today than in the 80’s.
But thanks Harold for unearthing those factoids about other section teams that went to the finals. Rye in 1982 and also Nyack (for section 9)in 1982! Who remebered any of that.
Unfortunately, the final results looked kind of lopsided, 10-0 and 9-0 losses.
Well in reality Suffern also “took them to the brink” and it really doesn’t matter who the “BEST” team is or was. Every team in every sport has one goal, win the championship, being the best gets you nothing. I don’t think anyone can argue Suffern was the best team last year, what did it get them? Nothing. The NY Giants were not the best football team 2 years ago but they are the champs, all that matters. So Sufferns 92 team is the best team in section 1 history, they are the only team to achieve the ultimate goal, STATE CHAMPS.
Oh boy….why is it always about Suffern ? Get over yourselves.
The size and speed in the traditional Prep Hockey schools is quite impressive. It would only take 5 games for those players to either figure it out and up their game or go from being stars in their programs to 3rd line or worse cut. At many of those Prep schools the game is dominated by 13th graders who are holding our for a NCAA offer. However the only way to know is to play. Its one of the few ways besides delaying College in High Level Juniors to get to the NCAA level. Its strange players all mature and develop differently. I have seen players who look like they are going to make it all the way fail and I have seen those who you would have though they should have gone out for another sport make it very far. The skating, shooting, passing mean so much but its the “heart and desire” within them that means even more.
Am a long time Rye fan and a Mamo supporter over their recent run. Gotta go with Suffern ‘92, though. They are still the only Section One team to win it, and in such dramatic fashion.
CN, I am really getting tired of you, how can we have a discussion on teams in section 1 over the past 20 years or so and not have suffern mentioned?? you are so dumb. Several people brought up Rye, did anyone complain? NO, they had some great teams and deserve to be in the discussion. Just because your CN team had a few good years recently and never will again, doesn’t mean they should be included in some of the great teams of the past. Go away!
You have a serious issue with self esteem….
Suffern has become irrelevant. Many teams have caught up and surpassed that program, they used to be feared, now everyone loves to play them.
Upstate teams look to play Mamaroneck and Pelham more than they want to play Suffern.
If Dzenis and Harms do opt for prep, Witz will have some real rebuilding to do. Not to say he is not up to the task, though. I can see Dzenis playing varsity in the Founders League. He held his own in Junior B when he played there part of this past season. Harms would need a year or two in Founders league JV, before he could grab Varsity time. Just ask fellow Pelham resident Reycraft, who played Pelham varsity as an 8th grader, I think, and only cracked the Taft varsity roster this season (his senior year).
Harold,
How do they come up with the all state teams? Everyone on the teams are from teams that made states except Williows who broke a record. It seems like whatever teams got to the final 4 had players get placed on the All State teams for the most part. I mean congrats to Hagen, but let’s face it Willows clearly should have been player of the year!It appears that the final 4 coaches get together and banter back and fourth arguing for their boys to be selected.Kids who played their tail off and had better stats than some of the 1st and 2nd teamers are lucky to get an honorable mention because their TEAM didn’t make states.
suffern1- To the victor go the spoils. It has been that way for a while. Unless a player has impressed opposing coaches in regular season games upstate, the upstate coaches only see who plays in the state tourney. Not a perfect system, but one that has been around for a while.
How many students did each school have to pick from? Does Greece have an advantage combining two schools against our one school?
Willows is real good but he dosen’t even come close to breaking any records if he played in league 1 and had Suffern’s schedule.
It’s not the size of the school?
Down here the larger schools have no or little hockey advantage. North Rockland, New Rochelle, a combined Nyack/Tappan Zee (1,500 combined students) or Iona Prep (800? all boys schools) have never dominated the section in hockey.
Rather, the smaller D1 schools Suffern and Mamo, and 2 of the smallest D2 schools, Pelham and Rye are the consistent best.
I would give upstate schools the same regard. Smaller schools Massena, Potsdam, etc. have had their share of titles.
Can’t we all just get along? Again, the parents need to learn from their kids. The odd things is that I think the negative bloggers had kids on their respective teams that has relatively successful careers and yet they are still unsatisfied. Be grateful for the positive experiences. There were a lot of them. There are always some negatives in any experience. Don’t dwell on them.
A few typos. I’ll go away now. Signing off for the year. Congrats to Mamo and Pelham.
“r u kidding” It is the same Dan Culhane, unfortunately.
I got this off the coaches assoc. website for nominations:
http://www.nyshshca.org/statenominations.htm
some people were asking how they got nominated..
I guess the All Section Team could simply be the 14 Section One players who were just voted 1st team, 2nd team or HM for DI and DII All State. Pretty good choices.
As a senior at Pelham, I’m really upset to see their final season here come so close, and yet have the title of state champions unfulfilled after many of the seniors have remained loyal to the program for five years. It’s still very impressive Pelham got as far as they did, though I guess, and congrats to both mamo and pelham for accomplishing that.
Aside from that, Pelham looks like it will be in pretty brutal shape next year. I was talking to Dzenis today and didn’t get the feeling he wanted to leave Pelham hockey, although Harms might be leaving. Aside from that, basically every goal scored this season was because of a senior, and I just don’t know how Pelham will replace that offense anytime soon. Hopefully Reilly will develop into another Flory, and be able to carry Pelham to another sectional champ in his time here.
Re: All-state
Got the following from Section 1 chairman John Orlando, the vice president of the coaches association:
58 players were selected for the All State teams and Honorable Mention. 14 of those players team made it to the final eight which means that the 44 players that were selected were on teams did NOT make it to the final four. Nominations were made before the states and you had to be a member of the NYSHSHCA to nominate players. An open meeting is held Saturday night of the states and it is there that all the nominees are reviewed, discussed and then voted on. 16 coaches were present and only one coach was there who had a team in the final eight and he abstained from voting when his team was involved. Over 60 quality players were also nominated, were given consideration and not selected.
best team ?

Icehole
AMEN!
riley wont even come close to flory, he wasnt even the best freshman this year
icehole,
it is unfortunate that the suffern game winner surfaced. It was a real weak goal for a goalie to let that shot in. He was obviously disgusted with himself. You are right that they were champs, but while Sufferns game was a huge upset, Mamaroneck was toe to toe with the best and were not significant underdogs, if they were underdogs at all. Mamaroneck came in as the #2 team in the state. Unfortunately a dump in shot from the blue line did not go in for Mamaroneck as it did for Suffern. Suffern never finished #2 in the state… never even close. It is obvious to the state and everyone else that Mamaroneck has taken over section 1 as the premier team. Suffern probably 4th after White Plains and Pelham. Maybe 5th after Rye. And guess what. another Suff/Mamk difference….After the Mamaroneck game…. NOBODY CRIED.
Next year,
Does that somehow make the Suffern players worst because they showed emotion. Every player reacts differently and I bet their was at least one Mamo player with tears in their eyes. I would think that would be normal and acceptable.I am not a Suffern parent but I do know alot of their players and their good kids with great attitudes.
How can you say the game winning shot that went in was weak? Did you see Hagan’s shot from a few feet away? I’d love to see some of you bloggers in the net making those stops. Gimmee a break.
Agree that the ‘92 shot was something the Massena goalie should have stopped, but he didn’t and history was made. That play simply proves the old hockey adage- Any shot on goal in OT is a good shot!!
Lucky shot? That guy scored with thirty seconds left in the game also. He was also the sections leading scorer that year. Sounds like jealousy. You guys talk so much on this board. I wonder if the guy who scored the game winning goal talks as much as you. I doubt it!
Dan Culhane is was sentenced to three to nine years in March of 2008 for scamming good people out of their hard earned money. His dumb ass family members keep trying to protect they tarnished Culhane name by defending him. If you want to know the whole story you can look it up at lohud.com or call the westchester county DA’s office. Ask for Janet Diforie. His hockey days are over as well as using his dead moms name to make a livin. He is upstate in a 5×9 where people like Dan deserve to be.
