The final hockey edition of Varsity Central Live will be Wednesday at 7:30. You can watch it and ask questions by clicking here. Please join me and special guests Sean Hagan of Mamaroneck and Mike Mamone of Pelham as we look back on a historic final weekend in Utica, where two Section 1 teams made the finals for the first time.
In the meantime, you can win $100 million if you pick a perfect NCAA tournament bracket.

I understand that many people considered the Section Championships at West Point to be a success, but strongly disagreed.
West Point was a nice idea. I didn’t have a problem with the travel. My problem is that West Point is a horrible place to actually watch a game because of the VERY POOR SITELINES. Because the ice is well below the first row of seats, you can not see anything on the near side boards. And because the firsst row is up against the glass, when the students sitting in the front row stood, you could not see anything on the near side 1/3 of the ice.
I was in favor of having the games at West Point but because of its poor sitelines I’d prefer to hold them anywhere else.
Can anyone explain how a fine player like Sean Hagen actually came to win the Player of the year award? How is is so highly regarded upstate while those in Section 1 consider him to be an above average defenseman at best?

Not a fan of West Point: It sounds like all you had to do was move to seat about 20 rows up and you could see everything. So the first two rows have a poor view. Get up and move to higher ground.
I would have to say I agree with those final standings. I know some WP people might be upset that they are not ranked higher then suffern after beating them twice, but think about this. WP lost 10 games this year and tied 2, losses to Pel 2x, Suf, Mamo 2x are fine, but the losses or ties to teams like Stepinac, ETB, Sleepy Hollow, North, Mahopac, JJ (ot win) is why they are not ranked higher. If you look at sufferns 6 losses and 2 ties, they come from games against, west genny, Pel, Greece, Mamo and of course WP, all teams listed above.
Please stop bashing kids on this blog. If you don’t have something nice to say about someone then say nothing. Grow up!
Who won the CHS states?
Not a fan of West Point-
Correct me if I’m wrong, but wouldn’t fans in front of you standing up causing you to not be able to see much of the ice be a problem pretty much anywhere? I’m not sure if there’s one rink on the planet from MSG right on down to the frozen tennis courts in the local playground where that’s not an issue unless you’re seven feet tall and can see over the guy in front of you (in which case, it’s still an issue for the poor sucker sitting behind you).
And as for the sight lines on the near side of the boards, you have that pretty much everywhere as well due to the nature of the shape of a hockey rink and the fact that there are boards 3’ tall all the way around. If the games were at the home ice of the two higher seeded teams, you would have the same issues at Playland & Hommocks.
It’s different in sports like basketball & football since there’s no boards and a considerable amount of unused space between the edge of the playing surface and the first row of seats, but in hockey it will always be that way.
whos bashing? I think you need to grow up and people need to stop being babies about things. This is a place to discuss things and if no one brought anything up than than theres nothing to talk about. geez
How did the Iona Prep JV do in their playoffs?
Final standings are ok. But Rye certainly deserves to be ranked higher as does WP. Both were def among the top 10 at the end of the year. The early loses should not effect how good they are now. Just my opinion.
If there were 14 players that earned all – state then they should be the 14 that make all section.
Great job section 1 for having 6 ranked teams in the final rankings? Not positive but I do not think this has ever happened before.
enough-
Take it easy. Nobody bashed anyone. There’s a difference between saying he’s not as good as others in our own section, much less the state and saying he stinks. The guy is entitled to his opinion, and he simply stated that he thinks there are better defensemen locally, meaning there are certainly better defensmen state-wide. If he said something disparaging about the kid, then you would have a point, but you’re being WAY too sensitive.
I really have no idea how he got MVP. He has a rocket and is huge, but it’s hard to move well when you are 6’6. I would have thought Willows would have gotten it.
I agree, and am still trying to figure it our myself. I would say he’s not even the best defenseman on his team, never mind the best player in the state. I would say that both Shuman and Hiller are better then Jackson, so how he got 2nd team all-state is also puzzling. But who cares they are all good players and should be proud. jmo
LoHud- From the balcony at Playland ,you don’t have the sight line issue discussed above. Still think West Point was a cool idea. There would have been a huge crowd for both games had there been better weather.
Still trying to figure it out- Be happy a Section One player got that award. Remember Hagan has a fair amount of visibility upstate. That is a big part of it. He was All State last year. The team he captained was in the state playoffs two years in a row. He has a lot of points for a Dman. An imposing figure on the ice. His primary sport is baseball, so he doesn’t skate year round like some others. There are other Section One Dmen who arguably skate and defend better, but every Section One coach would love to have Hagan on the point for the PP.
how are they going to determine all section bids. there are only what, 12 spots on the all section team. definitley shouldn’t be going to just league one kids. each league should be represented.
Al Bundy
Iona JV went down in their one and only playoff game..
All the hype was by a few parents. The end and be all is this. There were some decent young players not playing as a team with a young and inexperienced coach unable to fix it. The team underachieved end of story. The season from Iona’s Varsity and JV was average to below average. There have also been rumors about JV defections to other programs.
Having had the opportunity to compare Section 1 Hockey to CHSHL hockey I think that obviously Catholic Schools although a great place to educate your boys is not the place to showcase them for hockey. The league operates on a low budget with a limited talent pool. Still have great rivalries however.
fanotgame-
The people standing in the front of the balcony at Playland may not have the issue, but once you get a few people deep up there, it would be very difficult to see. I know Playland holds a lot of people, but if you packed in there what was expected at West Point (and probably would have shown up had there not been the threat of snow causing a breakup of the double-header and many to stay home), way more people would have trouble seeing the game there than at West Point.
Playland has about 50 place to sit and although a good place to hug the glass is not an arena by any imagination.
WestPoint is an arena as they need to meet Division I guidelines for seating and capacity.
Where else would you suggest. The Ice Hutch? Brewster? WCA?
I suggest West Point was and is a great place to host playoffs for HS hockey everyday of the week.
The guy complaining about site lines needed to move his seat up 5 rows.
Think about Hagan winning Player of the Year this way. Someone asks your top 10 players in Sec1. You name the best 6 or 7 players that you’ve seen play regularly and then what? You go on reputation. Who comes to mind. Well the people that vote know even less about sec1 players than you do. And who’s well-known? Hagan. Also consider the fact that some voters think they need to vote for a player on a team that went to the state tournament. Hagan is the most notable player on Mamk even if, in my opinion, he’s not the best. He stands out on the best team. No offense to him, he’s a very good player, but that’s why I think he won it.
Hagan is blessed with size, strength,a long reach and a super shot but not speed. He may not be the best dman in the league but he was on a great team with a lot of exposure.
Place him on a losing team that lacks a supporting cast and he will not get the award. It all fell into place for him, right time, right team, right place.
Baseball is a whole other story. Congrats.
Re – Sean’s Player of the Year & Other Comments on Hits of the Year on the Other Posting:
I think Sean definitely deserves the title (and buy into Taylor’s logic), but I wonder if the clean, hard hip check that he put on the one player from Greece toward the end of the game (they had to carry him from the ice) didn’t help his cause a little? All the decision makers sure had to marvel at that hit….
aren’t all league selections announced today, as well as all section and other awards?
who do you think the freshman sophmore team would be for this year?
This is what my freshmen sophomore team would be
Dan Broderick F WP
Scott Hagan F Mamk
Colin Reily F Pelham
Sam Christiansen D Mamk
Robbie Gardner D Mamk
Has anyone hard anything about All Section, league, etc????? Tonight was the meeting. Any info?
F Scott Hagan
F David Dansky
F Grant Weiner(this kid is a tank, cant be stopped)
D Robbie Gardner
D Sam Christiansen
G Dean Chiapparelli(very good street hockey goalie, should be a real goalie)

mamo has best sophomores in the state…besides greece
people are forgetting that scott hagan scored 20 goals and had 33 points on 3rd line…thats very hard to do…he has to be on the freshmen sophomore team…also dean chiapparelli had about 20 points on 3rd line they are going to be a great pair for years to come..
all section team? 1st team all rockland county? 1st team Westchester county?
dean chiapparelli and scott hagan had a combined 55 points on 3rd line..they are going to be great
GRANT WEINER WILL BE A FORCE TO BE RECKON WITHON MAMO WATCH OUT!!
Naclerio is better than dean
Sean Hagan is a great kid. All he did was play his heart out all year… and he won some awards. Is it his fault people like him and think highly of him?
I think some parents are just jealous because:
1-Hockey is not his best sport
2- He does not play travel hockey
3- He is very unassuming,
4-Has the hardest slap shot in section 1
5- Speed is underestimate, he can skate fast
6- It kind of kills a lot of parents dream when the state player of the year is not even getting a sniff for college hockey. All these parents whose kids are the best on their little travel team think that their kid will be the next John Forster…. and it aint gonna happen.
As far as state honors are concerned…. you gotta ask yourself something.
Would Willows break any scoring records if he was in league 1? NO
If willows was so good, why did he quit prep school and come back to Clarkstown North?
Also, how many coaches would have let Willows run up those numbers in situations where they were killing other teams? Not many
naclerio is better but we are talking about sophomores
if you add naclerio to scott and dean you have 83 points on 3rd line…some first lines dont even do that
DEAN CHAP= REGGIE BUSH OF HOCKEY
very good all section team this year. as we all know there were a lot of good players but the section only took 17. some notable forwrds left out were perelle, oconnor, hagen, zweig just to name a few. Any one of these players could be on the team its just like jim carey said in bruce almighty, “thats how the cookie crumbles.”
Do we know the results of today’s meeting?
best room ever
Joey Pubes
Supremo
Scotty Sidekick
mamk got as far as they did with depth and will have to adjust the next season but with mamk’s 3rd line being so productive with the least shifts will be a great line (Hagan, Naclerio,Chap).. with matt Conner with goal scoring talent as well with sam Christiansen at D alongside Tim Taussig they should be a force to be rekon with.. The goalie position is up in the air
matt weiner
best defencemen in section would have to go to joey p
he comes at you hard and have no time to think when you got the rock…this kis is going places
Sick state game… Greece is the inferior team but they won so cant take that away… mamk dominated from the start and if they played a best out of 7 mamk would take it 4-1…
Mamaronecks Matt Connor (junior) and Rob Gardiner (soph) were on second line and both are not graduating yet either.
what was this that i heard of a player stealing a goal?
Greece was not inferior. Mamk and Greece were really close. A crummy goal with 4 minutes left is what seperated the 2 teams. Too bad, overtime would have been amazing.
Taylor,
As an Alum of Pelham did you follow the team toWest Point, Queensbury and Utica? You were kind of awol here during last weeks games
section 1 expert – they (Greece fans)claim Jackson took a puck out of the goal and hid it in his glove, so the refs couldnt count it as in the net, they never found the puck and the ref had to skate off to get another. on his skate back to the bench it was given to someone.
Thats a great story, True or not True, it will be a story told 10 years from now during a Mamaroneck practice..a true classic.
