All-section team

March
18

The all-section team was selected this afternoon in a coaches meeting at BOCES. After originally thinking it would be 14 spots, Section 1 reconfigured the formula (which involves number of leagues and number of starters) and allowed 17 players to be named. The coaches voted to put the 14 all-state players on automatically, and then voted individually on the final three selections. Here are the results:

Matt Burdick, Sr., Pawling, F
Victor Dzenis, Jr., Pelham, D
Marc Flory, Sr., Pelham, F
Rob Fine, Sr., Mamaroneck, F
Paul Gabriel, Sr., Suffern, G
Luke Glaser, Sr., Mamaroneck, G
Sean Hagan, Sr., Mamaroneck, D
Zac Hiller, Sr., Suffern, F
Brett Jackson, Sr., Mamaroneck, F
Mike Mamone, Sr., Pelham, F
Joe Marasco, Sr., Somers/North Salem, F
Steve McCarrick, Sr., White Plains, F
Ryan McGee, Jr., White Plains, D
Craig Meany, Sr., North Rockland, D
Kevin Norwin, Jr., Suffern, D
Jake Shuman, Sr., Clarkstown North, F
Matt Willows, Sr., Clarkstown North, F

The all-league players, league MVP, sportsmanship award winners and coaches awards were also selected at the meeting, but I’m waiting until the results are certified before I post them.

  1. off the post

Rob Fine should be the playoff MVP for Mamaroneck. He was great, never took a penalty, and scored the game winner vs Massena. Without him, Mamaroneck does not even get past Massena. Jackson had a great regular season, but Fine was the best in the playoffs. I think he also had 2 goals vs. Niagara in the semi finals.

  2. ?

How did Zweig not make all section and McGee does? Also over Meany as well, Meany didn’t play a league 1 schedule

  3. ziggy

Zweig was as important to Mamaroneck D as Sean Hagan was. Sean would tell you the same thing. He is very quiet, unfortunately the coaches did not push for him. I would take someone off, and put Zweig on. He is also a hard worker, and a team player, a great teammate, and very coachable. Qualities that some players that did make it dont have. Maybe if he had whiney parents that called the coach every other day, and complained to the AD every week, he would have got what he deserved.

  4. zweig

Adam Zweig was a shutdown D man all year for the tigers. After all the talk about how few chances the Tigers gave up its stunning the section does not recognize him. He was as important to Mamaroneck’s defense as anyone and it is crazy for him to not be on the all-section team.

  5. mistake

I do not believe all 14 people that were all state should have been automatically on all-section. The people deciding all-section know the players better than anyone. They should have used their own judgement.

  6. STUPID REMARKS

    So,
A player makes ALL STATE but does make All Section? Think about that for a minute or less. Good enough for ALL STATE but not good enough for All Section?
And you “Mr Mistake” how did you know that is was “automatic” were you at the meeting?

  7. Hosed

Definitley agree with not putting Zweig on. He is much more solid defenseman than Hagen. Also, surprised Benincasa did not earn All-Section. Talk about a stud, he’s it

  8. yup

    zweig is better than hagan

  9. mistake

    no but i read Harold’s post…

  10. Stop now

Just a great list of players. A lot of talented kids unfortunately don’t have room to be on it., Halpin, Pesce, O’Connor, Urban, no Rye kids were named, Macindoe, etc.

Don’t beleive when people tell you the section wasn’t as good as last year. Two teams in the final, state player of the year, 14 kids all state.

Comment on the Greece-Mamo game. I only watched on the web, but it looked like Greece controlled the majority of the game. I guess score was closer than the game looked. The 2 Greece sophmores, Stenglein and Bourbonaiss, easily merit best soph’s in the state. I don’t know of any local soph’s who have the game impact of those two.

  11. all section

zweig deserves every award hagan gets… should have atleast been lockdown for all section. while hagan was up the ice with the forwards getting all his points zweig was back covering his butt. both captains for mamaroneck, both should get equal credit.

  12. Stop now

Maybe only Prunesti comes close to the Greece soph’s talent wise.

  13. Biff

what a joke. you have two league champs not represented. and why should upstate bias have any bearing on all section? unless they can do this without making it league 1 heavy, they shouldn’t do it at all. go back to how it was, no team. in no other sport will you see league champs not have a single all-section pick.

  14. sec1 fan

Of course it’s league 1 heavy, the best teams are in league 1. The 2 league 3 superstars were on there, Marasco and Burdick. League 4 didn’t have players like those 2. Who do you want to see on there? Miele? The list is very good.

  15. sec1 fan

League 1 vs. Other leagues in playoffs, 8-2.

  16. to stop now

You’re right Prunesti is close to their talent level and seeing nationals last year since it was in New Jersey and I saw Prunesti’s avalanche team beat the 2 greece sophmores rochester team 5-1,I say this because this shows that L3 and even L4 has good and great players and some like Prunesti who can be as good as the greece sophs others I would throw in there are MArasco and Burdick and maybe even more.I’m not saying L3 and 4 is bettter then the top leagues but they should get a little more credit and the three i just named can play in L1

  17. Mamo

League 3 and 4? These are power leagues, remember? They’re not based on school size. Sorry, but you can’t just compare two kids based on what they’re hockey abilities are. You have to look at who they’re playing against. If anything, a kid from League 3 or League 4 needs to be that much more exceptional than his counterparts in League 1 and League 2 to make it. And there were none.

  18. tired of this

I am really tired of hearing about how league 3 and 4 kids don’t get any credit. If these kids were so good, they would be breaking records left and right and they are not. I watched several league 3 and 4 games this year and trust me there wasn’t anyone that would even come close to being on the 3rd line of the top league 1 teams. You saw first hand this year what top players can do in a lower league, I don’t think I have to mention names. Sorry jmo

  19. Final 3

someone correct me if I am wrong but the add ons were all from Suffern, right?

  20. LoHud Hockey

No. The three that made all section without being all state or all state honorable mention are Mamone (Pel), Fine (Mamk), & Meany (NRock). No Suffern.
