With only 6 Rockland schools and only 2 or 3 of them that had strong seasons, the Rockland JN awards are pretty easy to figure out. The Weschester/Putnam awards with 27 teams (if you include the local Catholics and privates-including the four sectional finalists and a Catholic A league finalist) is a whole different story. Should be interesting what JN comes up with for “East of the River” selections.
Looks like Iona really racked up the awards this year.
Harold, good to have you back.
Rockland is much easier to pick. In fairness Westchester should be broken up into North and South for JN picks.
Does anyone know how to watch the Mamaronck Greece game? the “on demand” thing only has the 2 Pelham games and the d1 semi.
Harold
Any chance that the Hagen-Mamone interview will be on the On Demand?
To Al Bundy. I am not sure doing a Putnam plus Northern Westchester/Southern Westchester split really changes things much. The current strength of the Section is in Southern Westchester. The two state finalists were from the southernpart of the county. All four teams that played in the Sectional finals are from there. So was the local CHSHL finalist Stepinac. Last year, 3 of the four Sectional finalists and the two CHSHL finalists were from Southern Weschester. Currently, Northern Westchester’s best teams are probably L/P and Pac, two teams on the rise with some young talent in the queue, but hardly current powers.
Harold – is there a box score for the Seniors game?
what does everyone think of the selections posted above?
Literally half of Stepinac’s team was mentioned. Only 1 Iona player getting the nod seems a little severe. The Gaels clearly underachieved, though.
If you use all state awards and all section awards as a guide, Rockland’s team is Willows, Shuman and Hiller at forwards, Gabriel at goalie, Norwin at defense. Those are all the all-staters. I think the other defenseman goes to Meany who made all section, right? The JN could give someone like O’Connor the award at forward and maybe replace Shuman or Hiller and argue that the upstate coaches didn’t see the three of them play every day. You could argue that although Shuman had impressive stats, he had the best forward in the state to help him get those stats. At the end of the day though, I would think it will go to the all staters. Agreed?
To fanotgame
How about a little respect for Somers/North Salem in mentioning northern Westchester. They beat the two teams you mentioned (Mahopac and L/P) and were within 5-4 of Pelham in the third in the sectional game.
To sro
Respect to all the players but I go with the mind set that to the winners go all the spoils. Since Section 1 had 2 teams go to the D1 and D2 finals for the 1st time in history my southern sec1 team looks like this:
Glaser-G
Hagen-D
Dzenis-D
Jackson-F
Mamone-F
Flory-F
Flory player of the year
Thia is also dependant that all of these players were good teammates.
To sro- Sorry. Of course Marasco should be All County. Probably second team. At least honorable mention.
To tsp- I like your picks, except I would have Fine first team forward and Mamone on the second team. Both those players were not All State, but were 2 of the 3 added on to the All State list to make the All Section list. They both had the same amount of points playing similar schedules, but Fine had many more goals and also played with less support on his line than did Mamone. Finally, Fine had some huge goals down the stretch.
Fanotgame-
You have to look at them as entire players. Mamone is an excellent player, and is probably the best defensive forward in the section. He was a +45 this year. If Mamone was on a line without Flory he would have scored more goals, but he wasn’t, so he played incredible defense and let Flory put it in the net. When Emerson went down Mamone stepped up his offense and recorded 25 points in the 9 games Emerson was out.
Here are my choices for Westchester/Putnam:
First team:
G: Glaser
D: Hagan
D: Dzenis
F: Flory
F: Jackson
F: Fine
Second team:
G: Benincasa
D: McGee
D: Meile
F: Marasco
F: Mamone
F: McCarrick/Miano
Now, I know that puts a bunch of All Staters and All Sectioners on the second team. But, the East of River pool is very, very deep. There are a ton of worthy honorable mentions.
Also, I would have put Burd!ck on the first team if Pawling (Dutchess) players were eligible.
1st team
F: Jackson, Flory, Mamone
D: Dzenis, Hagan
G: Glaser
2nd team
F:Fine, Marasco, Miano
D:Mcgee, Zweig
G: Benincasa
3rd team- for kicks
F: McCarick, Mastracola, Mundinger
D: Reagan, Ciotti
G: Lambdin
Sec 1 fan- I respect your analysis and appreciate two way play. But, to be a first team forward this year, I think you need to score more than 17 goals, especially if you are out every other shift and play on the power play. In HS hockey, the best forwards are the best finishers. But, Mamone did have a very good year playing a new position for him.
sec 1 fan why did change your picks, on the blog before this you had marasco on the first team and mamone on second team. marasco is deffinately better so why did you switch them?
here’s an interesting question try to do these all county teams without taking into account how far a team went. for example even though Willows was a far superior player than hagan, hagan still won player of the year because mamk went to the finals. base the picks strickly on talent not on status of the team they played on
To?- but also pick the players based on their HS play, not their travel resume.
my last post was meant for “interesting question” not ”?”
Guess what? Whether you like it or not, more talent scouts would rather have Hagan than Willows. Don’t just blame that CN choked in the playoffs, Hagan has more upside and potential and plays a different positiion than WIllows.
If Willows is so great, why did he not tear it up in Prep School? Why did he come back home to play lowly high school hockey?
Willows is an all around better hockey player then Hagan…
Hagen from ETB, Willows is more talented and has heart !Hagen has none, any team would take willows over Hagen
You don’t know what you’re talking about – Willows did tear it up in Prep School – he was amazing. He wasn’t eligible to play for the first half of the year last year, and by the end of the year he was STILL the leading scorer on his Prep school team. The reason he came home is because he missed his hometown and wanted to graduate with all his friends.
Also, I heard a rumor that Willows is going D1 either to New Hampshire or Northeastern (like the Daniels!), but he is playing USHL first. can anyone confirm?
I switched Mamone into first team after I saw he had a +45.
first of all i meant hagan from mamk, and second of all willows did tear it up in prep, he had a ton of points, also what big upside are you talking about? all he has is size and a good shot no coach in his right mind would recruit him for d3 or d1 be realistic, in reality there are many section 1 defensemen better than hagan, and they would all be recruited (not that they will acually be recruited) in front of hagan
some examples are in no particular order: Zweig, Dzenis, Sganga, Miele, Ciotti, Halpin, Norwin, Mcgee, Christianson
i was talking about hagan when i said he only has a shot and size, after reading my post it may have appeared unclear who i was talking about
Wait, lets not forget that Hagan was picked as the state player of the year by the state coaches and an independent committee. I think they know more about hockey than a blogger, which is all that you are. Your opinion about the situation means pretty much nothing.
Bottom line is Hagan is the player of that year, and all your “blogging” does not change that. If Willows is so great, and has huge upside, then I am sure that the scouts and D1 college coaches will be lining up at his door to draft him.
Meanwhile Hagan will be playing D1 baseball for St. Johns and a full ride. Funny how a baseball player who does not play travel or juniors is the voted the best hockey player in the state. You can’t teach genetics. Deal with it.
Lets give Hagan his due as state DI player of the year. Heck, he might get a similar honor this Spring in his “other” sport. But, I agree with the earlier bloggers that a case can be made that about 9 or 10 defensemen from the area play at his level on the ice. On the other hand, I can’t think of any Section One or CHSHL forward that compares favorably to Willows.
The bloggers here know more about sec1 players than statewide coaches.
When Willows hits his growth spurt his stock will definitely rise among the scouts. He just hasn’t hit it yet. Every kid hits it at a different time. Just look at his older brother. He will be huge.
flory is player of the year for sure; a great kid with a great future ahead of him in whatever his pursuit is in life. mamone deserves 1st team recognition as he plays hard every shift, every game. his 45 assists are nice as is his plus/minus as sec 1 mentioned but it is his absolutely ferocious backchecking that earns him a top mention. there are so many really outstanding players out there that it is impossible to be perfect with this stuff. i can only thank all the players in all the schools for giving the rest of us a tremendous season to watch and talk about. doesn’t matter what team you played for….... it takes great effort and determination to play this sport.
To fannotgame
Mamone looked to pass and play D, setup Flory, thats why he was on that line. I don’t think you punish a player for being unselfish. A +45, wow I didnt know that. 3rd in the league in points, 1st in assists and a +45 which I would guess may be the best in the whole section makes him a 1st team in my book. Plus I think he was forced to play D in 1 or 2 games.
where did u find out he had a plus 45 i dont think they even keep track of that anywhere
To tsp, Sec1 fan and Pelican flash- Your team had a great season. It was fun watching the battles with Rye. Flory gets my vote for Westchester/Putnam player of the year. Mamone was a super leader and fully committed to the Pelham program. He switched positions for the team. Played some great two way hockey this year. There are simply too many other worthy choices for him to make first team forward in my book. I think he needed to bury the puck a little more to be considered for first team. If you look at the toughest 15 games on Pelham’s schedule- Rye (3X), Mamo(2X), Suffern (2X), WP (2X), Queensbury (2X) and then North, Massena, Burke and New Hartford once each, Mamone scored a total of 3 goals. I am sure he eliminated a whole bunch of potential goals with his tough backcheck in these games, but a forward’s primary job is to score goals. When was the last time a great defensive forward was an NHL All Star starter? Last year’s Westchester/Putnam first team (King, Connor, Eck) were all premier snipers. Maybe the success of Pelham’s “defense first” approach will sway the voters towards an unselfish, defensive minded forward like Mamone. We will see soon enough.
where- It’s recorded by Pelham and was in their end of season stat book.
Fanotgame- Pavel Datsyuk won the Selke award, had the highest +/-, was second in the NHL in assists, and was a starter for the west in the all-star game last year. He didn’t lead his team in scoring either.
You would probably see a lot more backchecking if the Section actually tallied and posted +/- stats. Also a great way to measure those stay at home d men who help out so much, yet don’t show up on the scoresheet (Norwin, Sganga).
Hey fannotgame
You need to look at this link:
http://capitalnews9.com/Video/video_pop.aspx?vids=85894&sid=32&rid=12
Then tell me that scoring goals are all that matters, Mamone made 2 beautiful passes to Flory in the Regional game against Queesbury that resulted in goals. Maybe he would have been better off trying to make a move and score himself in your thinking. There are enough selfish players around. BTW Mamone played D in one of the games vs Rye. Team work is as big an issue as anything. Your thinking is selfishness is. Read why Mamone was put on the line, passing, defense, and his body checking ability. A forwards pimary job is to score goals? That’s a idiotic comment, forwards should just stay at the other teams blueline until the D gets them the puck.
tsp- no need to get defensive. If you look at my earlier posts, I rank Mamone very high. Just not first team all County high. And, you are right that a defensive, unselfish forward is very important to a hockey team’s success. I think HS hockey is a little different from higher level hockey where you have lots of talent and each player has a specific role. In HS, a select few strong players have to play a lot of roles. And, in my book, a first line forward who plays on the power play has to bury the puck. I can accept your counterarguement as reasonable. I just differ. That’s all. Probably a similar difference between the respective approaches of Tom Renny and John Tortorolla.
Here is how I rank the top 7 forwards in Westchester/Rockland:
1. Flory- His stats and late season run speak for themselves. Great finisher.
2. Jackson- A lot of people might not like his chippy style, but the guy scores big goals and makes heady plays.
3. Fine- His stock rose measurably when he scored several huge goals during Mamo’s playoff run. Remember that last year’s 3 first team forwards (King, Connor, Eck) all scored the game winner in the respective local championship games (all one goal differential games).
4. Marasco- a very dangerous scorer. Pelham’s defense had their hands full with him in the quarters.
5. Mamone- does everything well. An all around player. Just like Willows needed Shuman to get his numbers, Flory needed Mamone to get his.
6. McCarrick- a big body who created space for his linemates and was a physical force (like Mamone).
7. Miano- While criticised for his one dimensional play, he did score a lot for his successful Stepinac team. Had the Crusaders a bigger bench, Rocco may have been able to commit himself more to the defensive end.
What no one knew until now is that Fine played for 4 weeks
from mid Dec through mid Jan with a broken left thumb on his shooting hand, and a full cast up to his forearm on his left hand. He still put up the numbers to be 4th in points in League 1 and the second leading scorer on his team after Jackson with a handicap.
fanotgame, your lack of hockey knowledge continues to amaze me. Willows is by far the best forward in the section and to not have him in the top 7 is just crazy. From what I hear he is going to play in the USHL next year, do you have any idea how good you need to be to play at that level?
suffern – i agree.
Willows is the “once in a while” truly elite player that comes around. He’s in that class along with Foster, the Daniels twins, i guess if you had to throw in a goalie, Natoli would be in that class as well, etc.
Willows is a full notch or two above all those players mentioned above.
Sorry guys- My list was supposed to be a Westchester/Putnam list. That is the one that will come out in a few weeks and what is currently being debated. Typo. My bad. Of course Willows is #1 forward for Section.
For Rockland and Dutchess fans- here are my thoughts on the top dozen forwards (four lines) playing in the Section One area (based on HS only play this season):
1. Willows
2. Flory
3. Hiller
4. Jackson
5. Shuman
6. Burd!ck
7. Fine
8. Marasco
9. Mamone
10.McCarrick
11.O’Conner
12.Miano
I hope I don’t offend anyone.
It takes a great deal of dedication and maturity to handle being that far away from home and staying out of trouble. Hopefully he is up to the challenge. He certainly has the ability to reach his hockey goals.
If Willows goes to the ushl he’ll find out where he stands vs some real talent. Remember 5’8” 160lb forwards who can skate ans shoot are a dime a dozen. It’s the best way to find out what your about as a sreious player….no daddy on the bench….real coaching and trainers and some real hungry hockey players.
Rating forwards is different when discussing certain teams and philosphies. Pelham is a whole different thing. Watched them several times. It appears that the forwards have different goals and play much more defensively than many of their counterparts on other teams. Pelham appears to play a more team oriented game and appears to perform more organized team play than other teams. There was an unselfishness with puck and shooting distribution that was different than other teams. I would say that if the team was more wide open offensively with less concern over team defense the numbers and stats might be different but I doubt they would have won the Section and Regional games they won. Its about whats more important to you I guess. Winning and playing on a winning team is very important and I was impressed with them everytime I watched them play.
In the past 5 years, only 3 players have had more goals than Mike Mamone did this year. Marc Flory did it in 2009, 2008, and 2007. Reycraft in 2006 and Emmet in 2005.
mamone is not good he got all his stats from passing it to flory and letting him skate up the ice and score. he is a solid role player and nothing more.
He was the second leading scorer and centered the first line of a team that went to the state finals come on he must of been more than a role player
Hey not good, are you a jealous? Are you a disgruntled player or parent? He was All Section as a forward in his first season at the position. He was the power leagues 3rd leading scorer and led the power league in assists. He is a top of the line two way player.
Why crap or knock that kid now? He played 5 years on the varsity at Pelham. Was one of the teams best Dmen in 10th and 11th grade. Took one for the team and moved to forward as a senior. Played defense anytime they needed him. Won what 3 Sectional Chmapionships? I think anyone knocking that kid has some sort of agenda
Best of Luck
Willows will be playing for the Topeka Roadrunners of the NAHL next season. The only TierII junior hockey league in the U.S.
what does that mean? how does the NAHL relate to the USHL and other hockey leagues?
couple things
first of all, moving to forward is not “taking one for the team” the majority of defensemen would much rather play forward, but they know they are more valuble to their team on d so they stay there, so therefore the defensemen who always remain defensemen are the real “team players”
second, enough of this garbage about him being the “best two way player” the only reason people say this is because they assume it is true because he used to play defense. i have seen him play multiple times and he backchecks just the same as any other forward
third points depend completely on what line you play on. flory had something like 55 goals right? so on pretty much every goal there is an assist, and mamone got many of his 40 someodd assists from touching the puck a little while before it finds its way to flory and picking up a lot of secondary assists also he only had 17 goals which is nothing special playing on a line with flory, not only will flory create lots of oppurtunities by passing, but there are many rebound oppurtunities off his shots, if mamone had played on any of pelham’s other lines than he would have had 20 or less points
I think I know where this Mamone bashing is coming from. The way I see it is that Mamone was the perfect fit for Flory and Emerson. No other combination would have been better. If Mamone was on Pelhams second or third line he would have still had a good season because Pelhams 2nd line had talent too. Pelhams 2nd and even the rookies on the third line were fine. Those kids play together as a team thats why they win. They are not selfish players. The team had strong and solid chemistry. I agree with the abovve poster that he did “take one for the team” switching positions going into senior year. Many players complain about what position they play, who they are on a line with, what line they are on. Obviously others put that aside for the ultimate team goal and thats to win.
i think we all know where “not good” is coming from and who “it” is. bashing a kid like mamone at season’s end is classless. knocking this kid at 1AM on the blog tells the world that you have no life, especially at night and you need to get one. this is a 5 year varsity player who has done all that the coach has ever asked him to. he is not the biggest or fastest player on the planet but this kid gives you 1000% effort every game, win or lose. and something else that doesnt show in the stats is that he is not a “quitter.” some kids “not good,” (and i’m sure you know of one or two) would quit if they didnt like the line they were on or the position they were asked to move to and i am sure you know this. mamone is a really nice kid who asks for nothing but played for the love of the game. to attack this kid like this sounds like you have a personal agenda…...... i hope harold will initiate drug testing for bloggers.
Not being a fan of Pelham but having seen many of the games over the years I agree with what Pelham did with Mamone. It was a risk taking one of your best two defense man and moving him up. It was logical as if the plan was to keep Flory with Emerson Mamone or Dzenis or Harms were the only players at that level who could skate and play with Flory and Emerson. Pelham maybe choose Mamone because he was a senior maybe but whatever the reasons it certainly took them to the state finals
Saw Pelham a bunch of times. The Mamone kid was a vital part of the teams success. Taking him off defense when he was one of the best defensive guys they had was a risk but it paid huge dividends. I saw the kid make some great passes dig lots of pucks out of the corners and come back into the defensive zone and make things happen. Winning as much as Pelham did is not an accident you need big years out of many players in order to do what they did.
I am sorry to have started the discussion about Mamone as something other than a top 3 forward in Westchester/Putnam. As I have posted many times above, he is a very good hockey player (I had him a top 5 West/Put forward) in an area that happens to have a lot of other very good hockey players. He had a very good career, and just as importantly, was a leader on a successful Pelham program. After all the bashing that resulted from my posting, I hope he moves up a few spots on to that first team. Good luck in your future.
It seems only one particular party bashed the kid. Only one. I as an opposing fan would find it odd that the only person who bashed Mamone would be an opposing team or player. The kid is an extremely hard worker who most sensible opponents and fans would respect his hard work on the ice. I dont believe he ever played travel and that may bother some people. I would take his game on our team anytime as that type of play rubs off on others he is a winning player
unreal that Mamone would get blasted like that from somebody except that it is realistically someone from pelham doing it so just consider the source.probably somebody who doesnt like the team, the players, the coach, the rink, or #2 on pelham. get a life please; or at least get a new agenda.
maybe if his/her player had his stats posted on the blog, everyone could analyze that kid, as this adult(s) has taken an electron microscope out on Mamone and ripped him after the season in a personal manner. better yet ….. man up and go tell this to his father face-to-face.
Hey No Game
Top 10 in goals league 1
#1 assists league 1
#3 points league 1
3 sectional titles
2 regional titles
2 Final 4 appearances
1 state final game
+45 as a senior and led team
Top 6 in season scoring in Pelham history
Yes moving from D to forward is a big deal, 1st off when you’ve played 1 position your entire life I would think ots very difficult to learn another. And also he probably gave up some recognition for the good of his team. You know what, that’s the sign of a team mate, one that can play on my line anytime.
The kid
Willows has a great first step(burst). A 5’7’ player from upstate NY was offered the last scholarship to BC years ago. Brian Gionta. Not saying that Willows is the next Gionta, but he is special.
I guess not too good is who they think he is good job on identifying the joker
your son isnt very good
Many times parents and what they tell their kids mess things up. Parents and their expectations can ruin things. Its a shame for anyone to miss the fruits of a high school career because parents ruin it. Its so unfortunate
Not too agreeable with the words but the Chshl is a mickey mouse second rate operation. Too bad if run properly it would be pretty good.
watch for the name william or billy pascalli from St. Anthonys he only played 7 or 8 games for st anthonys and still led the team in points he also played Jr B for applecore where he was third in points and hes only a junior
