Ice hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley with Harold Gutmann

Mamaroneck wins another state title

June
14

It took a few more months, but after losing in the final minutes of the Division I state championship in hockey, Mamaroneck’s Luke and Christian Glaser, Sean Hagan and coach Mike Chiapparelli got that second state title in baseball (I think that’s one of the Glasers hugging Hagan on the right).

We also had Mike Miller of Brewster win the Federation golf title, Joe Marasco led Somers to the Class B sectional boys lacrosse title, and Mike Bonitatibus was the goalie for Yorktown, who made the state semis in Class A. Congratulations to all the hockey players out there for their success in the spring.

Of course, this is the hockey blog so here’s another tidbit for the offseason — the Section 1 championships will again be held as a Sunday doubleheader at Tate Rink. However, West Point was unavailable the following weekend (it needed to be held open in case Army was hosting a tournament game), so the regional games at Section 1 will be hosted by the local teams.

  1. RTH Coaches

Congrats to Coach Chiapparelli and the baseball team for an amazing championship and a wonderful season. The hard work that you and your team put into the season has resulted in this great achievement. Well done!

  2. Mamo fan

Members of this year’s State finals Mamaroneck Hockey team and this years State championship baseball team are brother’s Luke and Christian Glaser, Brother’s Sean and Scott Hagan, Robert Fine and Dean Chiaparelli. Congrats!!!

  3. 3 sports

Play other sports, especially in the spring!!! It builds other muscles while resting those hockey ones for a while, it avoids burn out, and most of all it teaches you other skills you can relate to hockey. Lacrosse teaches you how to catch a non-perfect pass, and it teaches you creativity. Baseball teaches you hand eye coordination, and how to use your gloves to control pucks when needed. Prep school players may play hockey everyday for 2 hours a day, but its for 3 months out of a year and maybe a summer showcase. They must play 3 sports. They rarely put on skates for 7 months out of the year. No need to play year round.

  4. Conference one

Excellent point 3 sports. The driving force behind playing hockey for 12 months a year is money. The rink owners need to keep the income flowing in to pay the debt and the operating costs of their rinks. So you have fall leagues, spring leagues, summer tournaments, travel leagues that run from August to April etc etc etc. And people buy into the my kids needs to play year around to “have a shot”. Nothing could be further from the truth. You either have it or you don’t. A young athlete is much better off playing different sports, doing other activities for all the reasons you mention. I’ve seen so many young players burn out from playing all year round. The prep school students have an advantage in smaller size and requiring everyone to play a sport of some kind each season. Much harder to make teams in larger, public high schools—but there are town, rec leagues and then there’s what we used to play—schoolyard, backyard unorganized stuff. Now that is truly a lost art.

Meanwhile, congrats to all the spring athletes and enjoy the summer (if it ever gets here)

  5. for Conference one

    TO Conference One,

Not really. Yes there are kids playing year round. YES they are coherced in a way but by AAA AA travel programs, “junior programs” and the like. That whole system of travel hockey is what drives it. Travel coaches and programs hold that over players heads. Junior programs are out there to make money so dont kid yourself

The upper echelon player can find good tournament teams for some good competition.

For the average player it is hard to find good play. Unfortunately many house league spring teams are plagued by uneven competition and excessive fighting. In this case regular skating and occasional open hockey can serve the same purpose in keeping your game tuned.

It’s not detrimental not to play all year round though. The Mamaroneck baseball players are an excellent example of that with there success in two sports. Notwithstanding, this unusual exception, it’s refreshing to get an outdoor spring sports season (golf, lax, baseball) after spending the winter inside ice rinks.

  7. Conference one

We’re saying the same thing. Very often the rink owner IS the travel program…......

Conference one- You stated in an earlier post that it is much harder to make a varsity team at a large public high school than at a small prep school. Not really the case. Most of the prep teams (especially the boarding schools in the Founders league and similar schools- eg, Avon, Deerfield, Hotchkiss, Salisbury, Andovers, ect) play at a much higher level (for all sports) than the big publics. Kids who previously played varsity at a public HS as an underclassman often need to repeat a year and play JV at Prep. I think that is what Pelham’s Harms (freshman and soph starter for the Pelican’s hockey team) is doing at Berkshire next season. Some of the best seniors at the publics who need a little seasoning to play college sports, will PG at a prep school and be a middle of the pack player as a repeating senior. The prep level athletics is pretty darn good. Top players play DI and the next level down play DIII. Heck, it is not all that unusual for a top prep ice hockey player to be drafted in the NHL while still playing prep hockey.

I do agree that the preps have more options for their students. A place like Avon or Salisbury have, for boys ice hockey, something like 4 teams (Varsity A, Varsity B, JV, future stars). So, there is a place for everyone.

  9. Local NHL Fundraiser

July 1st there is a great charity hockey game with NHL players at the Darien Rink. If oyu want to see good hockey come to the game. St Louis-Shannon-Sifers-Jessiman-Higgins and many others scheduled to attend.

  10. Trouble in ETB Land

I watched the WSA Spring league playoff game the other day won by ETB over a 8 man patchwork team known as the Blue Demons. ETB won in overtime on a goal scored by one of their prep-school bound players who had not played the entire spring but was brought in for that playoff game. From what I saw, ETB will struggle this season unless they come up with a number of new players.

  11. Basketball Schedules are out - Where are the hockey schedules?

A quick look at the Section 1 website shows that Winter Basketball schedules are out and posted. Any idea when ice hockey schedules become available?

  12. Conference one

FOTG – you are of course right about elite prep school hockey. It’s beyond competitive and in a different league than section 1 public school hockey.

I was really thinking about making a varsity team in general at a large public high school. Schools that have 2,3,4, 5000 students….....there are a very limited number of kids who can make a baseball or soccer or lacrosse team. (This whole thread was about playing other sports besides hockey off season).

  13. Conference one

    Trouble in ETB land….

Two thoughts: Spring hockey is about as meaningless as preseason NFL football

and…..your post points out another reason why spring hockey is not worth the trouble. Oh, it’s a playoff game?..quick see if Mr. Ringer wants to play Sunday night with us…. I’ve seen that many many times over the years. No rules hockey they should call it.

  14. LoHud Hockey

Basketball Schedules are out – Where are the hockey schedules?-

They are being worked on right now and should be out shortly. Because of the complete upending of the leagues and who will play whom how many times, it delayed things. I know the crossover matchups have been set so they know who everyone will play in their cross-over games, but they have not yet worked out the dates and times for all the games.

  15. manhattanville

    manhattanville’s schedule is out
