Crossover games are set for next year

June
23

Next year’s schedule is coming into focus. Suffern-Mamaroneck and Rye-Pelham will play each other twice, while Rye still plays Mamaroneck, Suffern will play White Plains and Mahopac will play Suffern, Mamaroneck and Pelham.

Conference 3 (Byram Hills, Greeley, Mount Pleasant, Rye, Rye Town/Harrison, Somers/North Salem, Fox Lane, John Jay) will play a double round-robin, with a few exceptions (Rye will play Greeley and Byram Hills once, John Jay will play Greeley and Byram Hills once)

Conference 4 (Suffern, Clarkstown North, Clarkstown South, North Rockland, Pearl River, Nyack/Tappan Zee) will play a double round-robin, except Suffern will only play everyone once, and there are a few more exceptions (North Rockland will play Pearl RIver and Nyack/TZ once, and Clarkstown North will play Nyack/TZ once).

  1. Why

Why isn’t Rye playing Suffern or White Plains? It makes no sense for Rye to have to play some of these teams twice and blow them out when they could be playing good competitive games against the other top teams.

  2. CN Fan

so CN only has 3 games outside of Conference 4 – ETB, Scarsdale & White Plains. But I believe they are in the White Plains tournament again at the beginning of the year. Anyone know which teams ar ein the WP tourney this coming year?

  3. Rye

Rye can scheduele with some of the power teams once they beat the other teams in their conference and they cancel the second game.

  4. fanotgame

To Rye- I wonder if that can happen? My guess is that there will be some mismatches in Conference Three that the losers will not want to play a second time. It would be nice to play WP and Suffern or the CHSHL’s Iona and Fordham instead of some of the weaker Conference Three teams a second time. At least BH and Greeley didn’t impose a second game on the Garnet schedule so they could get Mamo and Pelham scheduled. This season will be a little bit of trial and error. With the demise of the power league system, soon enough, the weaker teams will see the merits of a “only once thru the conference” approach. While getting the chance to step up and play a top team once is a good thing for some of these progams, the ADs have to realize that being overmatched on the ice against a team making a point is no fun.

  5. Anon

Their schedules aren’t full right? I mean Rye could schedule Suffern for one of their open games.

  6. Harold Gutmann

The schedules definitely aren’t full. For instance, Suffern is only down for 11 games and Mamaroneck and Pelham are down for 12. They don’t include tournaments, games outside Section 1 and games that I’m sure will be picked up over the next few months.

  7. Mamaroneck

Mamaroneck will have 2 games as part of its annual tournament, so that’s 14. Do they do 3 tournaments, or 2 tournaments and 2 non-tournament games against non Sec. 1 opponents? Probably 3 tournaments—there aren’t too many quality tourneys that don’t want Mamaroneck as the state runner up. Also, since you listed Pelham hosting Mamaroneck in a crossover, does that mean the conference game will be at Mamaroneck?

  8. rediculous

these new leagues are so god damn dumb. 10 league games? and for suffern, only 5. how are they going to do the seedings for playoffs? how much money can you really be savings with these leagues? someone please explain

  9. Hockey Fan

Harold, how do the AD’s determine who plays homes games for example conference 2 with the single round robin?

  10. QUESTION

If RYE cancels second league game against weaker teams, how are the weaker teams going to schedule another game to fill a 20 game schedule? Who even gives Rye that option.
That doesen’t sound right. What if the other team wants to play anyway,do they have any say in the matter.Underdogs live for those games.Nothing to lose and everything to gain!!!No coach is going to cancel a game because another team is better.Playing once or twice should be determined before the season starts.

  11. Nueve-Uno-Cuatro

Other than Pawling/Pelham in 07, section 1 hockey hasn’t provided any huge upsets, and that Pelham team had an awful goalie, and were in their worst year in the past decade. Does Byram Hills really want to play Rye twice? It would be like Mount Vernon playing Pelham in basketball, not once, but twice. Or Arlington playing Peekskill in baseball twice. Let them get their chance in once, when they lose by a touchdown, theres no need to play the second game.

  12. Rye

To answer your QUESTION, yes, other coaches have cancelled their games against Rye because they are better than their teams. Other teams in Conference 3 may follow suit.

  13. Draft

What ever happened with Willows and the USHL tryouts

  14. CONFERENCE 3

To Rye-Does a cancelled game against Rye have to be determined before season starts by other teams?

If other teams do not cancel does Rye have to play?

  15. LoHud Hockey

For the second game to be cancelled, it has to be mutually agreed upon by the two teams. If Rye wanted to cancel and BH did not, the game would not have been removed from the schedule. If at some point during the season, someone else decides to cancel their second game against Rye, then there should be no problem with that since it is not required for the league standings. Similarly, if lets say a snowstorm comes along and wipes out the second Rye/FL game, it would not be required to reschedule it (like it would have been in past years) because it’s not really a league game. This would free up both teams to schedule whomever they want with their open slot rather than looking for a date that both of them are free to play each other again.

  16. reality

interesting locals that got drafted the past couple of days…

probably the biggest news is the 123rd pick by pittsburgh…they took a kid right out of delbarton prep in jersey…team that plays out of the gordon conference in nj every year with the likes of bergen catholic, don bosco, st. peter’s, etc….alex velischek…interesting, born in quebec city, but played at delbarton haha

the 128th pick by toronto had to be news, too…a jr. flyers player…and a big boy on the d line (6-6, 220)...eric knodel…from west chester, pa

and how about in the last round…the 190th pick by ottawa…from ny, ny…out of avon old farms…brad peltz…anybody know of him?

and while we’re on the ny, ny topic…one of the miami u. players from this past season’s college hockey championship is from there, too…connor knapp, 164th pick by buffalo…anybody know of him?

  20. fanotgame

I think there was a Peltz who played for RCDS. Not sure he was NHL draftable though.

  21. lxlxlx

    he is the same one

  22. fanotgame

Also, it looks like more than a few of the Conference Three coaches have agreed to play Rye just once. Rye is scheduled to play 6 upstate games (Queensbury tourney over Thanksgiving, Rome Free Academy tourney the weekend before Xmas and then Whitesboro and Cortland come down to play Rye and Pelham over MLK weekend. Garnets have also reportedly scheduled games with Mamo, Pelham, Fordham and RCDS. Queensbury tourney could be a tough one if the Rye football team goes deep in state playoffs and the Garnet goalie, top Dman and a few forwards are still on the gridiron.

    FOTG…

Is this the same goalie expected to return from prep school that will be playing football?

to everything- When I said not NHL draftable, I meant I thought the Peltz kid I saw skate at RCDS was not old enough to be drafted. The kid I saw must have an older brother.

  27. Peltz

There a Peltz who was a soph at rcds in 07-08 and his older brother was at boarding school.

NHL teams just don’t frivously draft players because of who the father is, if their is not some underlying talent and upside present.

A free agent invite would be a better alternative if they want to extend a favor..

I’d also bet that most Prep school BOD’s are alumni or have children in the school. Doesn’t seem like anything untoward their either.

  32. no way

Just found out Suffern wants to start a JV, oh boy ,pretty funny considering the section and district want to save money, who will they play( since only JV in area is Mamo) and how do you save money adding more travel etc.
Its just another way to suppliment the varsity and for the coach to not take players on varsity he really doesn’t want and really doesn’t care about.
It probably wont be any better than modified which is a huge waste of time.

  33. jv

maybe suffern will play all the local nj teams jv teams that would be good competeition .also i think orange county teams have jv programs so finding opponents not the problem, and at least the kids that dont get ice time on varsity team will get to play on jv team.hopefully improve then get some ice time on varsity. a jv team for suffern would be GREAT idea.

  34. LoHud Hockey

I don’t know if this is true or not, but if it is, I think it would be a good idea. As for competition, there are plenty of JV teams in the area, and a lot of them are closer to Suffern than they are to Mamk. Northern NJ has a lot of JV teams (A few of which call SOR home), and Suffern is right on the border of NJ. If you look at Mamk’s JV schedule, you will see they play a good number of games against NJ schools, this is who Suffern would fill their schedule with.

Between modified & varsity, Suffern usually has somewhere in the neighboorhood of 50-55 kids every year. The Varsity squad usually carries about 25-27, at least 10 of which rarely see the ice. Their modified team usually is up by a touchdown before the first period is over (especially since the modified schedules changed a few years ago so Rockland teams only play Rockland teams). If they take those bottom 10 kids from the Varsity roster and the top 6-8 from the modified, you will have a competitive JV team and make the modified team weaker, but more competitive with the rest of the league, which in turn will help out the development of those kids a lot more than not allowing them to shoot on net for 2/3 of the game.

Two questions about this. First, would the JV team be club or would it be affiliated with the school? If it is club (Like the Suffern JV team was years ago in the SOR league), it would cost the school nothing, and also would allow kids to play on the JV & Varsity (or JV & modified) teams simultaneously since in essence it is a travel team that is called JV. Second, if it is affiliated with the school, would it be in addition to the Modified team or instead of it. If it is instead of the modified team, I think it would be a better scenario to have Varsity & JV with no modified than Varsity & modified with no JV. You can let the 7th & 8th graders who are not ready for JV play for the youth hockey teams for another year or two where they would get better competition than playing the NTZ, CN, CS, PR, & North Rockland modified teams a couple times a year and it would cost the school district no additional money since they would still only be fielding two ice hockey teams.

Now if they are planning on having three levels all school sanctioned like Mamk does, that doesn’t seem to make a ton of sense from a business standpoint. They are in a huff to try and save money with the budget cuts, shortened schedule, and re-alignment, and it wouldn’t make sense to add teams right now. I’d like to see it, but I would be shocked if it happens.

  35. Al Bundy

A JV speaks to the health of the Suffern program, while still some Rockland County schools struggle to field varsity teams.

I believe there was one game forfeited due to a lack of players last year…

Sport-o-rama plays host to many NJ high schools JV squads. St. Joes Regional, Bon Bosco Prep, and Highlands come to mind. Other JV opponents are nearby NJ powers Ramsey HS and Bergen Catholic. They also could play the Mamaroneck and Iona Prep JV’s.

    This is a good move.

  36. fanotgame

JV much better than cuts or being nailed to a varsity bench. WP had a JV a few seasons back. May have helped their recent rise. Like Suffern, Rye has approx 60 kids who try out for varsity and modified. The Rye coach doesn’t carry as many as Suffern does on varsity. Lots of 7th, 10 and 11th graders get cut. Rye modified has too many players. Better players out every 4th or 5th shift and most wins are still landslides. Would love to see a Section One( Mamo, Suff, Rye, Pelham, WP) /CHSL/NJ prep JV league. If it meant more playing time and more even competiton, parents would fund it.

  37. Nueve-Uno-Cuatro

Pelham can’t have a JV, Pelham needs their underclassmen, kids like Flory, both Mamones, Emerson, Clay, Reycraft, Duffy, both D’Agastinos, Marone, Fredericks, Sheehy, Harrigan, Durand, Dzenis, Harms, Lambdin, Landis and Reilly all were needed on the team as 8th/9th/10th graders, and all contributed, playing 10+ minutes when they were around 14 years old.

Pelham doesn’t have the numbers that Mamaroneck, Suffern and apparently Rye have.

  38. WP fan 2

WP had a JV for the 2005-06 school year due to a surplus of players in primarily 2 classes (12 seniors, 12 sophs). They could have had 30 players on varsity, but times weren’t so tough, so they played a JV team. They currently don’t have so many players in any one class and the best freshmen get all the ice time they can handle. I wouldn’t count on a WP JV team in the near term.

  39. fanotgame

To nueve- Rye,like its small school brethren Pelham, relies on a select few freshmen for support, especially in the second half of their first varsity season. Recent examples include Eck, Rogers, Gordon, Mundinger, Katsuta, Rosenfeld, Holmes, Rogers (again). But there are a whole bunch of other solid freshmen, good 8th graders and 10th and 11th graders who get cut which could combine to make a decent JV team. Then, the modified program can be exclusively for developing 7th graders and the average 8th graders, instead of solid 9th graders and good 8th graders playing inferior competition. It would make the jump to varsity that much easier. Mamo is the new gold standard for Section One. Recent Tiger modified teams are nothing special because the better 8th and 9th graders are playing a JV schedule which better prepares them for varsity the next season.

  40. no way

If they go out of district to play teams(ex:NJ) they would not be saving any money( even those few miles cost because of where it is) and since ALMOST NO sec.1 teams have a JV this really would not work.As far as Orange county except for Monroe Woodbury their isn’t much else up that way.So who would benefit from all this, not really sure,Maybe if all the rockland schools had a JV like most of them use to have. Then it comes down to competitiveness within the county.

  41. LoHud Hockey

    no way-

Not sure if your comment is aimed at a potential Rye JV team or a potential Suffern JV team, but going outside of Section 1 for competition would cost no more than it would for staying in the section to play a modified schedule. I can’t speak for Rye (fanotgame has cornered the market on that), but I would imagine their schedule would be similar to Mamk’s, and also help to cut down on Mamk JV’s travel budget since they would undoubtedly add a couple of games against Rye’s JV while dropping two further opponents.

As for Suffern, there at least 2 or 3 NJ JV teams that play out of SOR, so road games against them would have no travel costs associated because Suffern doesn’t take a bus to games at SOR. As for games played outside of SOR, they would probably travel over the bridge to play Mamk’s JV teams which would balance out with the trips they currently take over the bridge to play Rye’s Modified team. As for the rest of their schedule, they could schedule a few other NJ games which would be played at rinks that are maybe 10 minutes further than the Palisades Mall (Where they travel to play NTZ, CS, & CN) and certainly closer than Bear Mountain (where they currently travel to play North Rockland).

The only way a Suffern JV program would be more costly than a modified team is if the school sanctioned and paid for both levels to exist. If they dropped modified leaving the 7th and lesser-skilled 8th graders to play on a Suffern Youth Hockey or Saints team and paid for a JV team, it would be a wash financially for them, but would benefit the program immensely.

  42. Al Bundy

I recently read a post on the lacrosse blog saying that lax powers Yorktown and John Jay do not have modified lacrosse teams.

Instead all there 7th and 8th grade lax players play on the local club team for the better competition against Connecticut and Long Island teams. A modified schedule against some of the local high schools does not provide these kids the same level of competition.

Likewise with so many Suffern middle schoolers playing high level pee wee and bantam hockey, what is really acheived for the school with modified hockey? Other schools use modified to identify athletes who they can hopefully turn into hockey players because they may need them to contribute by there frosh and soph years.

A JV program, whether district or parent funded (probably both), would allow Suffern freshmen and sophmores good amounts of playtime and instruction in Suffern’s team system. This is especially good for those sophpmores playing short season midget hockey…at least now they’ll be able to play in games in December – February, rather than sit on the Varsity bench.

  43. Hockey Fan

All the talk about having a JV hockey team amazes me and really tells the story of the school’s program. Other than Suffern and Mamaroneck, every other team in the Section NEED their 9th and 10th graders to round out their roster and in most cases, contribute some ice time.

  44. LoHud Hockey

Yes, the modified league is a necessity in this area because for a very good majority of the school districts, you can’t survive with Varsity & JV. Most districts in Section 1 have in the neighboorhood of 30-40 kids playing hockey between grades 7-12. Problem is, 7th graders can’t play on Varsity or JV. Some districts have rules barring 8th graders on varsity and others have very strict regulations to allow it. So if you have say 30 kids playing hockey and 10 are in 7th & 8th grade, you take the other 20 on varsity and have no one left for JV. At least with Modified, you can take the 7th & 8th graders and put together a modified team.

The JV discussion mainly pertains to schools that have the numbers to do so. Suffern, Mamk, Rye, and maybe one or two others.

  45. fanotgame

A good example of how a JV would work better for a team like Rye is this past year’s graduating class. It included 3 all county players (Benincasa, Sganga and Talgo). Only Sganga made the varsity as a freshamn and he didn’t even dress for all games that year, let alone play meaningful minutes. The other two were on modified as 9th graders. All 3 would have had a much more meaningful freshman hockey year playing a challenging JV schedule.

  46. underclassman

It all depends on the coach. Some coaches have no problem at all putting 8th and 9th graders on the varsity and if they are good enough, using them. Other coaches feel better with upper classman. Some teams have no choice in the matter depending on school size and league and schedule they are in. Many teams have done well with young players. Rye and Pelham for sure. Last year Pelham lost Emerson and plugged a freshman in with Flory and Mamone and got to the state finals before Emerson returned. The line was outstanding all year and the freshman held his own when Emerson was out.

  47. To underclassman

Some schools also do not let 8th graders play because the doctors refuse to give the schools the OK.

  48. LoHud Hockey

I know in Suffern, an 8th grader has to pass a special physical as well as show certain signs of puberty setting in in order to be allowed to play varsity. In Clarkstown, however, I know they don’t allow it at all (Which if I remember, came to the forefront a couple of years ago in the 1-win season because Lynch wanted to call up an 8th grader since the varsity was very short-handed and he was not allowed to).

  49. fyi

The problem Lynch had was that he called up players from modified and they practiced with the varsity more then 4 days and he tried to send them back down to modified, but according to state rules they were ineligible at that point. He F…ed up and was forced to keep them on the team. He came very close to forfeiting the season, go figure he probably never read the rule book. and YES 8th graders can play varsity in Clarkstown after passing the required physical

  50. not true

Although what you say about Lynch is true, the Clarkstown school board does not allow 8th graders to play varsity on any team sports. They only allow it in individual sports, such as gymnastics and swimming. In fact, in Clarkstown coaches are not even allowed to cut a 10th grader in favor of a 9th grader in hockey because there is no JV team. Coaches either must have the 9th grader play modified or take both players.

Suffern has enough players for a JV team and should field one. Clarstown does not have enough players and will not until they merge their programs. Their programs would have been merged already is the South parents weren’t so worried about playing time.

They physical thing is a state thing not a Suffern thing. Actually allowing the 8th graders to move up is entirely up to the school board. The physical is based on strength and must be administered by a certified tester. It has nothing to do with post-pubesent features.

  51. Curious

I have been reading a lot of talk about kids transfering into and out of section 1 teams for next year does anyone have a list of all these such players they could provide and how much do the additions and loses of these players affect their respective teams.

  52. Nueve-Uno-Cuatro

In Pelham there is a physical to pass, but the kid’s aren’t required to be post-pubesent and big for their age, Mamone, Duffy and Reycraft all passed it, and all three of them were small kids.

fanotgame- I think it’s interesting to see the differences in Rye and Pelham’s programs. Rye and Pelham, over the last 5 years, have been in the same ballpark in terms of program success. In Pelham’s senior class, when they were freshmen, Flory was on the first line, Emerson was on the second line, and Mamone was on the second defensive pairing, while Rivera, Hernandez and Rossinni saw very little playing time.

Rye is lucky in that there are many more players with hockey experience, whether it be local or travel, and can pick the ones who make the team. Pelham usually has a smaller core of elite travel players, or players of that caliber (mamones) who usually are the best 7 kids on the team. (Flory, Emerson, Mamone, Reilly, Dzenis, Harms this year) and then has to make players who would have been cut from Rye into solid third line players.

Players like Hernandez and Rivera probably wouldn’t have made the Rye team until their sophomore or junior years.
Kids like Camardella, who started playing hockey as an 8th grader, and Finizio, who was in a similar situation, are able to make the team no matter what grade they are in, and are given the opportunity to practice and play on the third line at Pelham, while they probably would have never made the team at Rye.

  53. Clarkstown

its pretty obvious that if Matt Willows was not on Varsity when he was an 8th grader, and hes the best hockey player to ever play at C-North, then Clarkstown definetely does not allow 8th graders on Varsity.

and unless c-north and c-south combine into one school in the district, they will never merge the two teams. both still have the quantity from 9th thru 12th grades to field Varsity teams.

  54. john orlando

    Selective Classification

This is a State mandated test.

Students may participate in varsity sports if they pass a maturity test by the official school doctor and then given physical performance test, usually by the school’s athletic director.

The type of test given depends on what sport the athlete wants to participate in.The standards are based on what the typical HS senior would score on the test. It is not easy.

e.g. Jon Foster did not pass the test as a 7th grader when he failed the standing broad jump by about 4 inches although he did pass the running and upper body strength with flying colors. As an 8th grader he passed the entire test and was allowed to play on the varsity. Kevin McCarren, Mike Sparago and John Chapman were just a few of the excellent hockey players who played as 8th graders as well as Jon Foster.

All that being said it is still up to each school district whether or not they allow 7th or 8th graders to play.

  55. To FYI

You must be another bitter CN parent. The season was never in danger of being forfeited and your description of what happened is inaccurate and false. Believe me the coach new the rules and was forced to keep 9th graders on the team b/c a parent complained their kid was going to be sent down to the modified level. No varsity season can season can be forfeited because a 9th grader practiced 5 times with the varsity – this is a fact. If that were the case the many teams that practice Varsity and modified on the same ice (there are alot of programs that do this) would be in danger of having to forfeit there season.

  56. Al Bundy

This was the year that CN had a very good team with both Willows and both Shumans. The 9th graders in question were not going to get any playing time on that team.

They could not be sent down because of to many practices with the Varsity team. This occurred before the first Varsity game was even played! The mod team could have used those kids because there were like only 8 maybe 9 kids on the team and they had to borrow Souths modified goalie.

If you ask me it is a dumb rule..9th graders being disqualified from modified before even the first Varsity game is played..Those 5 practices did nothing to make them better players.

I also find it ridiculous a parent would rather have a 9th grader sit on varsity rather than play on modified.

  57. And . . .

These 9th graders were NO superstars and their parents were pissed off once their kids were on varsity and didn’t play. They complained all year!! Hello!!! These parents just thought their kids would automatically make it—doesn’t work that way – many times 9th graders don’t make the varsity because of numbers or skills. It would have been better for them to stay down on modified where they would have played a lot and improved their skills.

  58. Al Bundy

I don’t want to come down on those players…they are fine players who should help North this year.

This “5 practice rule” is a pretty obscure rule. Most people just assume it’s whether you played a Varsity game that would end your modified eligibility. I guess Lynch, as coach, should have been aware of the real rule…but it was his first year as head coach.

I think his intention was to help out the undermanned 7th and 8th grade team and I don’t beleive he thought he was trying to get away with anything shady.

  59. Talent Level Dropping Fast!

Hate to say this but Hockey this year will be a real downer. Over the past three years, we have lost so much hockey talent due to graduations and kids going to Prep school that I feel that Hockey around here will be a HUGH disappointment.

Look at this year’s top skaters (i.e Hagen, Miano, Cambria, Hams, Dzneis), all either going to Prep or Playing Juniors. With this years players, who is going to make us forget the Daniels, Wynn’s, Blooms, Grenhaus, Kings, Ecks, Novicks, DiMaggios, Marascos, Ruis, Sigonas, keagans, McCabes, Connors etc…... Who’s left?????

Going to be a very long season, Especially with the new League’s…...Which are going to be a BIG JOKE!

  60. Al Bundy

That’s just the way it is. Kid’s didn’t play juniors 10 years ago…because ther were hardly any local junior programs.

More kids going the prep route is also a result of the greater levels of youth hockey – Pee Wee to Midget level- in the area. This many kids weren’t prepared to play Prep hockey, all not that long ago. But still…because of the growth of youth hockey the overall talent is better at the local high schools.

High school age hockey has more options than any of the other major team sports. Baseball, Football, lax, basketball don’t have as many options, so the public high school team is still the prime method of getting looked at by colleges for these sports.

  61. HockeyFan

Have to agree with TALENT…..... We were all spoiled with the Level of Hockey we had 2-3 years ago. When you look at Mamaroneck’s past forwards, Connors vs Fine and Jackson…. Neither of those two could even come close to Connors. Then you compare Connors to Capalbo and again no comparison…Hockey talent around here is going down hill very fast!

  62. hockey

one thing, watch out for suffern this year…just have a feeling about this years team, no success in the past 2 years, got a feeling something big is coming this year.

  63. still a few good teams

teams like mamaroneck and suffern and rye will all make good deep runs into the playoffs, they have enough talent to compete with anyone in the state next year

  64. noitall

Suffern lost 2 upper classmen goalies at the end of last season. One of them an honorable mention all-state selection. What kind of depth are they looking at for the up coming season? This seems to be one of the big question marks for them.

  65. west coast

I would not worry to much about their goaltending. Every year they graduate a goalie another one seems to come along that does the job. They have an excellent goalie coach who I am sure will work with each of their goalies and I am sure they will all be prepared when the season gets here.

  66. fanotgame

I agree with west coast. The Mounties will find something that works between the pipes. Also, their system protects goalies pretty well. Norwin will be on the ice all game and keep the blue line in control. It is the Suffern offense that is intriguing. Jaeger is a proven scorer, but not the type who is going to skate thru a team to get to the goal. Who else steps up to support? My guess is there are more than a few qualified candidates. Time will tell how this works out.

  67. fanotgame

    Preseason top 10:

Mamo, Iona, Rye, Suffern, WP, Fordham, L/P, Pac, RCDS, Pelham.

On the bubble: Harvey, SNS, New Ro, SHI, Stepinac

L/P, Pac and SHI will drop if their stars miss HS due to Brewster Jr conflicts.

  68. Update

What High School players are you talking about for L/P, Pac and SHI?

Don’t think Brewster Jr’s will have that many problems with players playing High School hockey. I think the problems will be with the High School coaches!

  69. fanotgame

L/P has the two Belgers, Pac has Mastracola and SHI has Pesce.

  70. fanotgame

Harold- Couldn’t help but notice your coverage of Larchmont Junior Race Week sailing (another one of my passions). Good job. But, I bet you can’t wait for hockey to rev up again.

  71. Brewster

I heard from a pretty good source that the Brester junior team is going to be very HS friendly, thats how they got all those good players this year.

  72. fasfdsa

    fan,

there are a couple of people that you have missed in your post. on forward you have redgate who is obviously proven himself. nicholson was a 2nd liner last year. on defense you have fuchs who played in the 3rd d-men position last year. suffern is a lethal weapon next year.

  73. google

    cool

  74. HockeyFan

fasfdsa ARE YOU KIDDING! Never heard of any of those players….........DO you think Suffern misses the Daniels, Salts and Ruthberg’s…. Now we’re talking about players no one has ever heard of…....LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  75. brewster jrs

Thats what they orginally told those players that the Jr’s was going to be high school friendly I guess they wanted them to commit. Brewster is trying to reconstruct there whole program, they got a new coach and many new rules. The coach told the kids that he does not expect them to miss any games for high school, but if there are one or two conflicts he will accomodate if its not an important game for jr’s

  76. brewster jrs

Don’t forget the goalies Mike Delevergne from Pawling and Gluck from Scarsdale

  77. MaMo

Iona top 10???? i dont think so. They have no one

  78. Brewster

nah, they had the new coach in place before the recruiting started, that was the other selling point, new coach and HS friendly.

  79. fanotgame

fasfdha- I guess those are the type of support guys that Suffern churns out every year. Everyone knows the Mounties will be a force, just not necessarily top dog.

To Mamo- Iona apparently has a new (but young) goalie that plays high level travel. Even if Cambria doesn’t play due to juniors they have a bunch of other proven forwards ( AAA and AA Midget travel players) like McCardle, Nolan, Lynett, Pellow, ect. Their defense is much deeper than most HS teams with the likes of Kirincic, Traficante and McElroy. Any one of those 3 would be top 10 Dmen in Section One. And that is without even mentioning last year’s JV players that some bloggers love to tout.

  80. Nueve-Uno-Cuatro

    And McDermott….

He would be the best player on Pelham this upcoming year if he had stayed…

  81. ip

    fanotgame,

ip also has 2 big d coming up from last year’s jv…rising junior that captained that team, patalano, 6-0, 200..and a rising soph., lipsky, same size…both agile and big

yes, the goalie is solid, barry, rising soph., partially carried the jv team, will only get better each year

don’t overlook ip’s forwards…other than the obvious ones you mentioned, also of note returning is donnelly…and the skilled forwards that dominated games from last year’s jv will definitely make names for themselves…mcdermott, chiariello, logerfo, o’meara, campbell, digioia, etc…

    nueve,

mcdermott comment…very accurate…best overall forward on ip’s jv last year by far

will be interesting to see this supposed incoming class of players for iona, something like 18 or 20 8th graders that play…word was going around that turnbull/mahoney proposed 2 jv teams (gold/maroon) to chshl for this upcoming year..

  82. fanotgame

to IP- Would love to see an Iona vs. Rye game. I think the Garnets are better in goal with a 16 year old transfer from Avon Old Farms who plays travel at Tier One Mid Fairfield. Both teams have plenty of skill and depth at forward. The Gaels have more depth a defense. Many of the upperclassmen on both teams are friends and current or past teammates on travel and spring select teams.

  83. ip

    fanotgame,
    heard that as well
    completely agree

  84. Can't Handle the Truth

    Hey MaMo,

Iona would skate circles around the Tigers this year. Wouldn’t even be a game. You lost to much over the past two years. Tell Chaps to pick up the pnone and call Turnbull. But that will never take place because for years Mamaroneck has never accepted a game against the Prep. ANd this year will not be any different!

  85. Bulldogs

Who is new Brewster Jrs coach ?

  86. Westchester Hockey

    Bulldogs

    New coach is Jeff Devenney.

Also, players were told that team was going to roster about 23 players, which should allow for some missing players or to replace players not performing up to expectations. Time will tell.

  87. Brewster

Oh wow, i didn’t know Jeff was coaching…they should do well with him…Jeff was a key component of Arizona State’s Division 1 Club team in the late 90’s….back then ASU was a top 10 club team.

  88. HockeyFan

    Westchester Hockey,

Brewster ALWAYS rostered 25 on their Junior teams.

  89. Poof, there goes a "star"

Brewster always starts telling kids that is is HS friendly and then make it difficult and then without fail those HS Stars end up doing nothing with hockey.

Who was a HS player on the team this year that did well for them OR their high school.
Unless I am wrong Flory, Jackson, Mamone, Hiller and Fine – all the top players in the League 1 did not play juniors or travel during the season.

Name me one player that has gone from their HS program to the Brewster Juniors (or any other program) that ended up with a better hockey, college opportunity or improved. How many of those players on Brewster in year one or two of the team go on further or have the chance to succeed?

The travel argument is stale at this point. The track record of the best players from our area is clear and they were/are committed and succeed during the year with the HS programs. How about last season? Pelham, Mamk, Rye, Suffern have kids that missed for juniors or travel? Can somebody tell me one player (we will make this easier) in League 1 in the last two years that was successful going this route?

The junior teams inflate the ego and expectations and sells them a bill of goods that it cant deliver. All while exhausting the players as they split time and energy between two teams. This usually brings on subpar performance and exposure to injury. Not to mention the subpar attitudes.

There are some fine players and some excellent talent. I am sure some excellent coaches as well. I am not knocking the travel or juniors but they dont mix well with HS. Players should pick one or the other.

  90. Al Bundy

All good points, especially the one about exhausting players.

Juniors is most beneficial not necessarily to the Suffern, Pelham or Mamaroneck players, but more so for the league 3 and league 4 “standout players”. If your high school team is not good and you aspire to play a level of good college club hockey (which is the realistic next level for most of the area players) than Juniors is a fine option to get some notice.

However, burnout is very real, physical and mental. Not many HS or Junior coaches can readily accept their teams not being first choice in the players priorities.

You are better off choosing one or the other, for your sanity, if this conflict is to great.

  91. only a few

Lets face it competition for D 1 college spots is incredible. I agree with the idea that local junior programs in this area of the country do in fact sell the kids a bill of goods. Forget high schoolers, how many junior players have gone on to the next level? Its no fault of the junior program its just extremely competitive. Thats where the junior program fails everyone. They should look to recruit players, and they should also explain hoe really tough it is to make it to the next level. Making the kids choose between juniors, (and getting to the next level) and playing high school does not serve anyone fairly. Problem is juniors is big business $$$$ involved. So thats more the motivation for the junior programs than getting kids to the next level. Parents and players think they all have a shot and buy into it. Many get disappointed at the end. Everyone has to make their own personal decision. My thinking with my son was I told him if he was clearly and absolutely the best talent among his peers than he should take a shot

  92. LoHud Hockey

    only a few-

You are correct in saying that it is big business $$$$ involved and the money is more important to the people running the programs than getting the kids to the next level. Problem is, the programs are sometimes too short-sighted to realize that getting the kids to the next level does generate business.

If you have to choose between 3 junior programs and one of them year after year churns out NCAA recruits, while the other two do not, which one are you going to choose? It’s no different than a college basketball or football program that starts winning. All of a sudden, top players want to go there which perpetuates things. Just like if you were moving to Rockland County and have a 12-year old son who is an excellent hockey player. You are deciding between Blauvelt or Airmont. Blauvelt has your kid going to TZ and Airmont has him going to Suffern. All other things being equal, which area do you move to? Now HS Hockey isn’t money motivated like travel is, but the principle is the same. The reputation brings in higher level talent, higher level talent makes the team better, which makes the reputation better, which brings in more high-level talent.

  93. HockeyFan

    Poof, there goes a “star”,

You’re absolutely right. Not did last years top High School players not play juniors, but the year before you had Keagan, Novick, Douglass, Datino, McCabe, King and Eck, who all played juniors in their Junior year, refused to go back because the Program was falling apart.

  94. sec1fan

    Hold on there “poof”

Brewster has been successful in recent history. Other junior programs have also helped local talented hockey players move on collegiately. You may not be aware of it because many of them chose NOT to play HS hockey in order to persue higher levels.

    Brewster “Former Players”
Ansel Ivans Anderson – UNH (Hockey East)
Danny New – Providence College (Hockey East)
Drew Daniels – Northeastern (Hockey East)
Justin Daniels – Northeastern (Hockey East)

    Players of other Junior Programs
Greg Squires – Western Michigan (CCHA)
Tommy Natoli – Becker College (DIII)
Adam Kaiser – Not sure which school(DIII)

    Other paths besides HS Hockey
Kevin Shattenkirk – BU (Hockey East)
Bobby Kramer – Merrimack (Hockey East)

Of the nine, only one played HS thru his senior year, two played thru junior year, two played only as freshman and the rest did NOT play local HS hockey. 4 grew up in westchester and the rest in rockland (one mite be from orange). I’m sure I missed one or two DIII players who went there after senior year of HS. However, I beleive I’ve covered the DI’s. Ryan Mckiernan(White Plains) also skipped HS hockey and is playing Canadian Major Junior (in the Q).

So out of the 7 DI local products, 4 have ties to Juniors in Brewster. ALL of the local DI talent has left the local HS program prior to graduating. This may change as 1 or 2 players who did stay for their senior year are still persuing DI placement. Even if successful the numbers don’t favor local HS hockey(they have to persue this dream thru the Junior route anyway, HS can’t get it done).

There are two REALITIES about the collegiate DI hockey process:

    1) Very few will make it although Section 1 does produce DI talent.

    2) Those that do will do so using a path that has NOTHING to do with local HS hockey.

I am not advocating that players leave their HS programs. This should only be the case if they have a realistic chance to persue DI or DIII collegiate hockey. Each player has to weigh the sacrifice against the “opportunity”.

  95. Medium - Rare

This just reinforces how rare it is to play NCAA D1 or D3 hockey from this area. Contrast this with how many locals play collegiate basketball, baseball, lacrosse or football.

Play hockey because you luv it. If your pretty good look forward to playing colleg club hockey. Nothing wrong with that.

  96. good points

Alot of good points by all,

But I think its the lack of ice time and that prevents out sec 1 athletes from going on to college.

other high school sports can practice 2 1/2 hours a day and 3 hours on Saturday if there is no game. More than half our hockey teams don’t even practice for 2 1/2 hours a week let alone a day. There is also a big difference in practicing everyday from 3:30 to 6:00 at your own school where you can leave your equipment there, than there is playing for a travel team that you have to travel an hour to get there, practice for an hour and come home at midnight…

So yeah it sucks, there isn’t really an answer unless we get more rinks and more money…so what do you do…the best you can, thats it.

  97. poof there goes your star

    Sec1Fan,

My point was not that playing junior programs were bad. My point was that splitting time does not work. Some of the players that you pointed out actually work against your own arguement. Other paths have gone through prep and junior (ushl, candad – solid junior programs), many of the other kids started in high school and used that as a spring board but they got their to start through the HS program which tends to teach and coach more. (depending on program).

The other posting is rather correct.. many of the top players recognize that “juniors” locally is not junior hockey but is good youth hockey and they put their HS careers there.

  98. sec1fan

Somebody is living on fantasy “poof” island.

    Thats pretty funny;
“many of the other kids started in high school and used that as a spring board but they got their start through the HS program which tends to teach and coach more. (depending on program)”.

All of the D1 hockey players mentioned above all played TIER 1 travel hockey throughout their youth hockey playing years. Starting many, many years before they stepped foot in HS. All but one spent time playing for the NJ Devils as bantams and/or midgets. Thats where they were taught and coached on how to play. Of the 4 (2 of which had a cup of coffee playing HS) D1 players that played HS, none of them played exclusively for their HS. The travel teams they played for came first (thus 2 of them only playing 1 HS season). They played HS for the fun of it and for school pride. They were recruited to the paths that got them to D1 through their travel teams (juniors, midgets, etc). Nobody scouting any of these kids was found watching a HS game.

So your point that splitting time does not work is not on target. For the D1/D3 prospect that wants to participate in the HS experience, they have no choice but to “split time”. HS hockey is not a spring board to anything but club hockey and even that is a stretch.

  99. Agree!

Many, and I mean MANY, of toaday’s players who are playing High School Hockey, would be lucky to make a good college club team. Yea, some players have been successful (Sec1Fan’s Blog above mentions a few), but there are thousands of players who have played high school hockey around here and have gone nowhere! Actually, after High School, they usually hang up their skates! Today, over 1/2 of the kids playing club hockey probably tried to get hooked up with a D1 or D3 team. They didn’t make it so they settled on Club Hockey because they love playing the sport. If you look at Davenport (located in OHIO), who just won their 2nd National D2 Championship in two years, they had 6-7 seniors who were 27-28 years old! Competition for these types of teams is so competitive that it’s hard to make the team. Look at Salt, who played for Suffern and averaged over 70 points for his Junior and Senior year, and was ALL COUNTY for two years. I heard he went up to the University of Michigan, made the team/barley played. What does that tell you about the level of Club Hockey? Chances of getting to the next level is ALMOST impossible, yes you have a few, but VERY FEW!

  100. Juniors

From what I’m hearing, there are three players who recently graduated that are playing Juniors next year. Jackson (Mamaroneck), Molinaro (Iona Prep), Halpin (SHI). Where are these players playing? and are there any others?

Two years ago, you had Ruthberg from Suffern (Now going to play Club Hockey at Rutgers), NAtoli from Suffern he’s going to play D3 at Becker College and Reagan from Stepinac. Does ANYONE know where Reagan ended up? College or back to Juniors?

  101. Poof sec1fan sounds angry

Its very simple…. Sec1fan or anybody… regardless of HS or local junior hockey.. any player must play elsewhere to play college hockey. Few and far between to no players go straight HS to college. College coaches want older players who have sacrificed to play the sport. There is a financial investment theses schools make. The argument that some kid went to a college and didnt make the team is silly as those roster spots are already filled with recruits. Those recruits have those spots. So you can make the argument that those kids that made college hockey took that route but you discount the fact that they chose a different route, they could have done HS and then prep or junior like many kids in the area have done with great success over the years.

  102. sec1fan

No anger here Poof, nothing to be angry about.

Not trying to pick on your posts but feel they are generating misinformation for the local hockey playing population. I don’t think thats fair. Players and their families read these blogs and may use them to formulate the path they will embark on. If you have a point thats helpful, please make it but state factual examples that support it.

Your post before your last one states “My point was that splitting time does not work”. You make a statement without a single example or explanation of why “splitting time” doesn’t work. Doesn’t work for who?

My post points out that every section one D1 hockey player(that I’m aware of) who spent anytime playing local HS hockey did “split time”. I listed the examples that support my claim. Although it is my opinion that time has to be split if you are to attain a D1 roster spot, my examples support the position. Any local player who aspires to reach the D1 level and would like to participate in local HS hockey can use that information. I stated how many years they did participate which required “splitting time”. They can also use the examples I gave of those who did not play a single local HS hockey season on their way to D1 hockey.

Your last post seems to suggest that a player can play HS hockey and then move on to prep or juniors to follow their dream. Based on the 2 posts its fair to assume that you mean for them to do so without splitting time with a travel or junior program. When has this ever been successful for a former section 1 hockey player in reaching D1? Please point out 1 or 2 of these numerous kids you refer to.

    Simply put again:

High School hockey is for fun and school spirit, it is not a “spring board” to D1 or D3 collegiate hockey. And yes its even a stretch for club hockey.

  103. pony

Suffern will be VERY strong this year.

  104. john orlando

Why is it always a contest? Why is HS hockey and travel hockey pitted against each other.

They really work hand in hand. All ice time no matter where it comes from has a hand in developing a player.I can tell you from my personal coaching experience that I always encouraged kids who were motivated to play travel hockey.

They were motivated to get better so one day they could play in front of their peers on the high school team.

So what came first, the chicken or the egg?

My own son played travel since he was a mite and some how he mamaged to play Suffern and Jrs. without much conflict.
It was cerative scheduling mainly by the Jr coach so he could get the better HS players to be part of his team.

That year the team lost in O’T to the Rochester Americans in the Finals of the Nationals.

I have never heard of a player who regretted playing for his school, in fact they all cherish the memory as something they will never give up and never forget.

  105. john orlando

    Sorry CREATIVE Scheduling

  106. Poof sec1fan sounds angry

    John,

I am not saying that it splitting cant be done. What I am saying is that splitting cant be done when the coaches, parents and players are unrealistic on fatigue, injury and attitude. Sec1fan there are plenty of kids that have moved through the HS to Prep/Junior route and you can no look further than the Rye program that has had plenty of kids do this going back to Holmes to Haggerty and to Suffern and their coach. Your posting is a bit misleading as many of the players you mentioned barely played around here at all or were simply on a different track. I am all for any kid pursuing any path that he / she may be willing to take that chance on bettering their hockey ability and their chances to move up (or simply enjoy the sport).

  107. john orlando

All the players I mentioned played at least 4 or 5 years of HS hockey.

  108. fatigue schmatigue

the whole fatigue business is nonsense…

The only reason kids may be fatigued is if they played hockey 12 months a year….even Wayne Gretzky played baseball in the spring!

Prep School kids practice 3 to 5:30 every day..vigorous practices…play games on Wednesday and Saturday and they are not fatigued.

Yet I hear parents and kids complain that they have 3 or 4 practices a week and games on the weekend, obviously these people never played another sport besides hockey.

  109. fatigue schmatigue

You said it Mr. Orlando….The Junior coach was very accomodating.

Unfortunately most aren’t. Gallagher did a great job accomodating, and hopefully Jeff Devenney who played for the Saints will do the same at Brewster.

Some of these other travel teams are ridiculous though. They probably all tell their teams they are wasting their time with HS hockey. I get the biggest kick out of the LI Gulls who post the past players on their website to keep up with the business of travel hockey. They put EJ Bradley on the past players site…now you remember EJ Bradley came to the Saints with Tony Felice(West Point)because the competition in LI wasn’t as good, and then he went to Canterbury….and when they were in LI, I remember them on Oyster bay, where the Gulls even around then?

  110. just call me Mushnick

Another laugher comes from the Applecore website..

Yes they do a great job with the Scuderi updates…but check out there latest post about their defensemen Nick Grasso, they congratulate him for going to AIC…then they take the credit saying they traded him to the Hitmen so he could get more exposure in the playoffs

  111. HIgh school/Juniors

So a local hockey player from the hitmen is going to a D1Club college after leaving hs in junior year to go to a prep school$$$$$ and then play juniors. OK – so what was the benefit there of leaving hs hockey? My son played hs hockey and travel and is now in his 2nd year of college hockey on a D1 club team that made it to the top 25 last year and he played every game besides having the time of his life and memories forever from playing hs hockey on one of the best teams in the section. He knows he’s not going to the NHL but he’s so enjoying the fact that he has that chance of playing any kind of college hockey while studying for a degree that is his future. He will have memories of all his hockey years that last a LIFETIME when he is out in the REAL world trying to make a living. Let these kids enjoy themselves—very very very few make it to the NHL.

  112. sec1fan

    Coach Orlando

The 2 endeavors should be accomodated by both HS and travel. HS hockey is a great experience that should be enjoyed by all who wish to play it. But as we all know, those that wish to test the waters for a collegiate future MUST play some form of travel(has to be tier 1 unless its an appropriate junior level). Thus for that player, the travel program is in the drivers seat. It would help if both programs could understand eachothers importance and bend to make it happen. I understand the difficulty in making exceptions at the school level but someone needs to drive home to the school administrators that hockey players are faced with entirely different developmental(as well as recruiting) issues then those faced by the participants of other sports.

The hockey landscape is a fluid one. What held true 20yrs or even 5 years ago likely no longer applies. The strength of prep schools and various junior leagues is an ever changing dynamic. The training and developmental avenues are also in a constant state of flux. The concentration of various competitive levels is geographically dictated. All these factors are issues when determining the best path to follow(not to mention accurately assessing the potential of the player in question).

Icetime is icetime. You are correct in saying that any icetime no matter where it comes from lends a hand in the developmental process. But each activity(HS and travel) bring something different to the table. When the 2 endeavors refuse to accomodate the other the player is forced to sacrifice one of them. Again the player aspiring to play D1 or D3 MUST be able to “split time” if he is to play HS hockey. There is no right or wrong in this decision, its only whats right for that particular player.

  113. sec1fan

    High School/Juniors

If you are referring to the player from the Hitmen who committed to AIC, American International College is a Division 1 collegiate program. It is not club hockey.

I Know Nick Grasso and his family. If you asked them if the sacrifices he made to get to AIC were worth it, the answer would be a resounding ABSOLUTELY.

  114. Hitmen

Ruthberg – Rutgers, Div. 1 Club

  115. Congrats

To Nick Grasso – doesn’t happen though for everybody who plays juniors – many are on div. 1 club schools – just look at some of the rosters

  116. ACHA

I wouldn’t attack Ruthberg on this issue. Ruthberg did it the right way, he played for a top HS team and graduated, he got the ice time he needed, he found a HS friendly Junior coach, who had sucess coaching top players in the past (some in the NHL).

He also got into a top school, which maybe he wouldn’t have been able to get into out of HS(I don’t know).

As far as getting into Rutgers, and being a year more mature to handle everything, from that standpoint, I would say its a sucess from a life point of view.

Time will tell whether it was a sucess hockey wise, as far as D.1 club teams go, Rutgers is no Penn State, not even a Stony Brook which is loaded with Applecore players,

Maybe, they made drastic changes in their hockey program, and Ruthberg should help them compete more. We wont know if this was a good hockey move for a few years.

  117. sec1fan

If you’re a parent just ask yourself this question:

If your son comes to you after his senior year(or any year for that matter) of HS and asks you if he could take a year and play juniors or PG at a prep school because he’d like to try and reach the highest level of collegiate hockey he can, what answer do you give him? Have you ever wished you could go back and persue a dream of yours for a year and see where it leads? Is there an amount of money that doesn’t make sense for you to spend so your SON doesn’t have to wonder “what if”?

How can you not applaud the effort whether it leads to D1, D3, club or nothing at all? At the very least, the extra year increases the players chances of success at whatever level they land at. The one or two years of delaying college amount to nothing. As ACHA pointed out, the extra year of maturity may actually help academically.

Congratulations are in order for Grasso, Ruthberg and anyother player who has the fortitude to persue a higher level regardless of where it leads.

  118. high school

Agree that travel and high school should go hand and hand. But unfortunately it doesnt. You cant expect a high school to allow misses and you cant expect high level travel team to allow it either. Travel hockey should not be always based on ~getting to the next level` many players play travel because they love the sport and enjoy the competition. High school hockey like other hih school sports should be part of a youngsters experience. I think that if a player is identified as a stud early on then maybe he weighs sacrificing the high school experience to take a shot. Keeping in mind thats its a shot, not a guarantee of any kind. Trouble brews when players and parents hear only what they want to hear and do not read the obvious writing on the wall. The writing is that it is super competitive and very difficult to get to a division 1 or 3 situation. There are players coming from all over the world competing and its hard. Nothing wrong with trying as long as you respect the competition, the numbers, and the process

  119. Poof

The real question then is how “high” of a level is local junior hockey. Its is clearly not what Junior hockey is in the USHL or Canada (Unless you are talking something less than Major Junior). I think perspective is important here in the same way that everybody.. parents, players, coaches, admin needs to recognize that as you move up levels in hockey the competition is so much better at each level. The reason that so few kids go to Div1 hockey is because there arent that many teams to begin with.

There are only so many “jobs/spots”. That funnel gets even smaller at the minor league and pro level. What we often lack is perspective of ability and talent. There have been plenty of kids from this area that have played college hockey from HS.
In the last 10 years in colleges there has been a greater

  120. high school

Lets face the facts. Good points that there are a limited amount of division 1 and division 3 spots. Forget junior programs here in our area, lets look at whats really out there. Prep schools in New England, Mid west have enough talent to fill those spots. Canadien juniors certainly can fill. International players can eat spots and then you have all the USHL and players from those types of leagues. I would think a player coming out of our immediate area would need to be so spectacular and so far ahead of his peers in our area to succeed. Its a hard uphill road to go

  121. Prep school

Unfortunately, there are not many average families that can pay the money for prep schools unless, I would say, that player is EXCEPTIONAL (and that means more EXCEPTIONAL than the exceptional players out there already) and really and truly has a chance at a D1 school and scholarship. It’s great if you can but most families can’t afford that luxury and then pay for 4 years of college if they don’t get a D1 scholarship. So what is left is for hockey players (and there are many, I’m sure, that would love to go to a prep school but can’t afford it) is to try to make a club team and enjoy the ride while getting a good education for your future endeavors.

  122. Confused?

In the past few years we have had a number of “GOOD” players. Here’s a list….a few made D3 teams but most are playing club or aren’t playing any longer! What does this tell you about the competition?

Natoli….Becker College (played juniors one year and got beat often!

    Reagan…..Still playing juniors??

Rui….....Still playing juniors? Tried to go out west and didn’t make the team.

    Salt…..No Longer playing

    Ruthberg….Playing at Rutgers Club

King….....Playing Club at BC (Finished 6th in the Nation last year). If you look at the stats, he did well for a Club player.

    Eck…..No Longer playing

    DiMaggio….No Longer playing

    Flory….No longer playing

    Bloom….No longer playing

    Grenhaus…Playing Juniors and going nowhere

    Molinaro….Playing Juniors in NJ

    McCabe….No longer playing

    Latino….No longer playing

Jackson…playing juniors for Brewster. Waste OF TIME.

bottom line….....Play High School Hockey and go to College!

  123. fanotgame

If there ever were a year where the junior programs and HS coaches can “work it out” it should be this coming season. The HS schedule has been shortened by a few games, so there should be less conflicts. The junior teams need players who, in a recession, are willing to fork over $6,000 plus to play a high level travel game (whether or not it is a route to a DIII roster spot). Being HS friendly (or at least HS tolerant) will increase the applicant pool for the junior programs.

  124. Poof

Many of the players not playing do so because they dont want to sacrafice to play any more either. Playing college hockey is not just playing hockey.. its a job. Coaches schedule 6am workouts in the fall, you rearrange your schedule to fit practice and games, you dont have the same experience as other college freshman. Many kids arent willing to put that much more effort in. Its for this reason that colleges recruit kids that have spent two years after HS playing juniors or prep so that they get an older, more mature (emotionally and physically), more developed hockey player. They want a kid that has “paid the price” to play (That does not mean paid to play on some local youth/junior team).

Look at the competitive landscape. College hockey recruits (even at D3) globally. Our best players in the area are competing with the best kids in the world. So if you are not willing to give up part of your youth, if you are not willing to go against the grain of going to college right away like all of the rest of HS classmates, if you arent willing to “ride the bus” then you most likely these days arent going to play college hockey. Even those steps dont guarantee that you will.

That does not mean that these players are not great hockey players. It does not mean that they dont get looks from scouts. There are more college recruiters at Playland and Sporto than most parents and players will ever realize.

  125. sec1fan

Prep School, maybe this will help.

At 15 or 16, except for the very obvious, it is usually difficult to discern who the D1 talent is. Some kids are far from fully matured even at these ages. So whatever path you choose is generally to give your player a chance (unless you just throw in the towel). I’m also not saying that the chance is a high percentage one. I think if you’re somewhat honest in your assessment that you can make a good decision to move forward or not. Sometimes your assessment doesn’t matter and the player that “thinks he can” should be supported, if possible, in chasing his dream.

Prep schools as an avenue can be a very costly gamble. Understand that they are not a developmental tool but a showcase. If you choose that path it better be because you are ready to “strut” your stuff and try and get noticed. The great upside with prep school is the education you’ll get no matter how the hockey goes. I’d say they are a great avenue for moving to the next level but they aren’t for everyone.

As for the local junior teams, they bring different things to the table. For the 15 or 16 year old, Brewster(empire) and the Saints(metjhl), are great stepping stones for higher levels of junior play. These leagues are not to get noticed at by collegiate recruiters. They do however prepare the younger players (that have the ability) to move on to the next level. At 17 or 18 the player does have local options that can lead to a D1 or D3 placement. The EasternJHL is a great leauge. There is some discussion now that it is superior to the NAHL, which would make the EJHL the 2nd best Junior league in the country. The Hitmen(Wayne NJ) have placed numerous former players in the D1 collegiate ranks as well as D3. Applecore, which used to be the hot team to play for, still places at the D3 level and has some that have moved on to the USHL. Understand that the “hot” team can vary from year to year. The point is that there are some great local options for persuing a collegiate future.

  126. BREWSTERJR

If your son has been playing travel hockey since the age of 6 years of age and he goal all along is to play in college, do you tell you kid no you will never make or do you tell them to go for it work your but off and try you never know what could happen. Especially if your son will only be 17 at the time of graduation.

  127. Poof, there goes the topic

I dont recall anything said, stated or implied that said that any kid, student or parent should not chase their dreams of playing hockey. The topic was simply that doing both juniors as it is called here and HS at the same time is rather difficult and that in the past it did not benefit those that did so in Brewster. If you can make work it great. But it was never said not to go and try or that you will never make it. The odds are stacked against anybody and everybody.. doesnt mean it cant be done and hasnt been done. It jsut means hard work is needed.

  128. obvious

Agree with “confused” in some ways. I think the kids mentioned are great “high school” players which is fine. As mentioned by poster high school, the thing is there is so much competition and there are not a lot of openings. I agree with “high school” that in order to advance or to even think you have a chance to advance to the next level you should be the absolute best of your peers. Far and away the best. The juniors programs are too numerous and certainly watered down.

  129. sec1fan

    Ok Poof

Playing juniors locally and HS hockey at the same time has had very little success. Thats not a function of playing both but rather the fact that making it to collegiate hockey is not likely to begin with. Of course most of those that have done it haven’t found the success they’d hoped for but they tried.

The only chance a player has of making it to collegiate hockey if playing local HS hockey is to play travel/juniors at the same time. You cannot simply play HS hockey and no travel/junior hockey and expect to get to the collegiate level. You cannot play HS hockey exclusively and after graduating return to travel/juniors and hope to move on from there. That simply will not work at all except possibly some level of club hockey(which is a significant accomplishment in its own right).

Simply put, If you desire to play for your HS and would like a chance at D1 or D3, you must “split time” and play travel/juniors. Nothing is close to being gauranteed and hard work alone will not get it done(although required).

  130. Poof, there goes my keyboard

    Sec1fan,

You make a valid point that the road to college hockey is tough and long. All “goals” and higher leagues are tough, but not impossible. I am not saying it cant be achieved. However, I agree that Fall, Spring, Summer that some travel hockey is needed.

During the season, though the high school teams (which do get scouted and looked at) need to take the lead. There are more examples of players, playing high school hockey and then taking the extra year in “juniors”/travel and then going to college then players splitting time at the expense of the HS team.

Straight HS to college doesnt work often anymore as coaches want the older player who has sacrificed.

Simply put, regardless of HS, Juniors, Travel… any hockey player must understand that to reach a tough goal there will be things he has to give up.

  131. ACHA

Just a matter of life in college hockey now. Unless you are a 1st round draft pick, who will only be one and done anyway, you can’t be an 18 year old freshman at any quality college. Not even the Daniels were allowed to go straight to college, they may have been good enough for the NHL, but not yet for Northeastern.

I played juniors for a year after HS before going to college, and I remember being 22 sitting in the locker room my senior year in one of our last games next to another 21 year old senior, and a 20 year old freshman. I remember talking about how these 2 were separated by less than a year and how the 21 year old would give anything to just be starting instead of finishing. At 21 the kid wasn’t ready for the real world yet and did some wandering before settling down to a real job…I don’t think another year or two would have hurt him, for that matter me either.

It seems like a big deal when you are in HS, I myself was nervous about being only 1 year older, then I realized, nobody cared, or even knew. College is such a different life, you have athletes and non-athletes coming in at 19,20,21,22. I mean there are exceptions everywhere, but I think the average person could use the extra year.

  132. fanotgame

ACHA- Agree with you on the age thing in college. People in the hyper intense east coast think you have to go straight from HS to four years of college and then directly to grad school or a bank training program or else you will be labeled an underachiever. I went undergrad in the Northeast at one of those pressure cooker -high academic standard colleges before heading out west for grad school. Only when I got to California did I realize that not everyone is a 21 year old college graduate. Looking at my grad school classmates, many, many top students in the west coast schools (Stanford, U Cal Berkley, UCLA to name a few) have students graduating college in their mid 20s. Maybe they take a year off in the middle to put togehter some money to finish of thier college tuition. Or take 5 years to get thru college because they need to work part time to finance the whole thing. Maybe they want to pursue a start up business project while attending school part time. No stigma out there on this course of action.

If a kid wants a year off after HS to play juniors/PG and see what he has, I say go for it. Still plenty of time to go to college and build a career. You are only young once.

  133. Al Bundy

I like to hear that. You don’t have to be a 21 year old college graduate. Very overrated. Get some real world expierience before you start your “career”. To some playing junior hockey after HS may not seem real world, but if you do it right you are training and committing yourself to a goal. Your gaining maturity. On this 40th anniversary of the moon landing, what did JFK say, “we’re doing this becuase it’s hard, not becuase it’s easy.”

  134. College

It’s nice to be able to put off going to college and get “real world” experience but you better be able to support yourself in this economy and a big thing that needs to be considered is health benefits which many kids will be under their parents IF and ONLY IF they are students and only until maybe 22 or 23. A minimum wage job which even now is hard to get won’t help support yourself and help you save for college. The best thing to do is go first to a community college which is relatively cheap and if you are good enough and can afford the high price of playing junior hockey go for it.

  135. ACHA

You are right…college…And this is more for the parents on this blog. There are benefits to having your kid go to college from 20-23, than there is from 18-21. Health Benefits is huge and thats just one of them. There are some people that can get a job at 21 and just stick with it for their whole career…But it may be beneficial for parents, who, lets not kid ourselves, will be supporting their children for a few years after college, to have a kid who graduates at 23 rather than 21.

  136. Disagree

what you don’t seem to understand, ACHA, is that if they aren’t in college full time from 18-20 they ARE NOT covered by their parents health care. They will have to be covered under Cobra which is very expensive. So parents will be supporting their children during that time while they are pursuing whatever it is they want to pursue before going to college and thinking about the real world ahead of them. Many times it takes kids more than 4 years to complete college so then it is beneficial to start at 18 (maybe with a community college).

  137. top 5

    Top 5

    1. Suffern
    2. Iona
    3. Lakeland/Panas
    4. SH/I
    5. Mamo

  138. lets be realistic

    top 5,
either you are completely clueless or incredibly biased, but that list is ridiculous and makes no sense.
The clear top three teams next year are in no particular order Mamaroneck, Rye and Iona then after that teams like Suffern, Lakeland and White Plains will round out the top 5.

  139. lets be realistic

mabye Fordam gets in there also

  140. not so

    Top 5 teams

    Mamaroneck
    Suffern
    Rye
    Iona
    White Plains

  141. FORGETABOUTIT!

MAMARONECK!!!! GIVE ME A BREAK….THEY”RE DONE!

  142. Tigers

Mamo is going to be good, they will find a way. Iona on the other hand !!! stop ranking them high and creating all this hype. When they beat some legitimate teams , than i will start listing to the talk about them.

  143. DuB sEt

WP ‘09 – ‘10 IS GONNA BE THE BEST.

    dUb Set

  144. lets be realistic

Once again someone has to through Suffern in as a top team and while they will be good there are three teams clearly better and they are Mamaroneck, Rye and Iona. They all have very strong offenses and either a good goalie or good defense. They are the most complete teams. Suffern has good defense but that is pretty much it. They will be contenders but not at the top.

  145. Iona

Heres the way I see Iona. They were a little over rated the last two years and it was surprising to see them exit early on in the playoffs last year. The goaltending is not a plus and the expectation is they may lose key players to juniors. On defense they are not deep pretty average while the JV team has prospects no telling how those will work out. They will be better than Fordham and Stepinac but Mamaroneck and Suffern like years past will still be better than them.

  146. Professor

    TO Iona,

It’s very clear you have NO idea about this years Iona Team. Yes, they are most likely going to lose Cambria to Juniors but they still have 20 players who are going to play High School Hockey and Travel at the same time. And to be honest with you, Cambria, who is probably the TOP Senior in the area this year, had a terrible Junior Year. Two years ago he and King were unstoppable, but he and Molinaro , Just disappeared! But if Cambria is able to juggle Travel with High School…..Watch out!

Tell me what team around here will be able to throw 4 skating lines against the Competition? And at the same time have “6” strong defensemen. And two decent goalies(a sophomore and Junior)!I also heard that they also have 2-3 incoming Freshman that could be moved up to Varsity immediately! If that’s the case, then they will be pretty competitive for this season and for the next few years. Their major competiton with be in their own CHSHL League (St. Anthony’s, Fordham and Farrell).

Concerning Suffern and Mamaroneck. Suffern will be little better than Mamaroneck. This is going to be a TOUGH year for the Tigers. They LOST too many of their stars (Hagen, Connors, Fine, Jackson, Glaser etc…) over the past two years and really Don’t have the players to step in to make up the differnce! They may have the numbers, but they don’t have the skaters!. Goal Tending for the Tigers and Suffern is going to be a HUGH problem. The type of problem Iona experienced last year!

But time will tell…....But knowing what I know, Iona will rebound very nicely this year after having a so so year last year! They’re quitely becoming an Athletic force in this area. Look what their Football, Basketball, Track, and Lacrosse teams accomplished over the past last few years! SO Hockey is next! WATCH OUT….

  147. ACHA

Hmmm….. I wonder if taking community college classes will give them coverage while playing juniors, that would be much cheaper, also allowing them to transfer credits, and allowing them to only have to take 12 credits a semester at their transfer school instead of 15 or more as most college degrees acquire about 130 total credits.

Being a post grad is another option. While it is also a lot of money, its different than college. Whatever fee you pay is the money you spend for the year…There is no meal plan, and very few unpaid for expenses. If need be a parent could actually drop their kid off at prep school with $200 in his/her pocket, pick them up for winter break, drop them off again in January with another $200 and that should cover it. $400 cash for the year besides the tuition.

  148. Rye

Mamo and Rye and are by far the top two teams. Their game is going to be nasty.

  149. seems like a lot

    ACHA,

It seems like an awful lot of trouble to go through. I say play club or play at the right level. Most kids in juniors are spinning their wheels

  150. Poof, there goes your eligibility

People!!!! Lets get some information before we start encouraging kids to delay college.

First, if a student starts taking a course college course load even at a local college there eligibility clock starts. So they start a five year window to play four years.

Second, most kids that delay college for local youth hockey or work do not return to the college track.

Third, post high school hockey should not have to cost. Most decent level junior teams that would be at the level to make an impact and move a kid to college hockey.. players dont pay for. The junior teams are run like a true junior team and they cover the costs and the billet for the player to live.

Fourth, should a kid take an extra year and he matures a bit, then great!! Regardless of hockey, he enters college more mature, more developed and more likely to succeed.

Fifth, I am amazed I can count this high.

  151. ACHA

Ha, if only it were that easy, can you name me the last player from around here to go to a big time D. 1 club team straight out of HS and be a contributor to that team? The only person I can think of is Pelhams Micheal Emmett who is a nice player on a somewhat competetive Townson State. And, Emmett was a player I loved in HS and thought he had a fast up and down game with a cannon shot that transfered very well to the college game. But yes, kids from here can probably go to weak club teams or weak NCAA D. 3 teams right out of local HS.

  152. Pelham

Isn’t King the third leading scorer on bc’s club team? And furlong, also from Pelham, is a contributer on that towson team.

  153. Professor

I don’t know what you’re where you’re getting your information from, But Mamaroneck will be a just an OK team. They lost TOO much of the scoring power these past years. They may have the numbers, but they just don’t have the players like they did in the past.

Rye, don’t know to much about them….......Strength last year was defense and goaltending. Seems to me that that’s what they lost through graduations. Heard that they are getting a player from Prep School, but from what I heard, he was just OK in Prep. Didn’t play much.

The team to watch the next few years, would be Iona Prep. Have spoken to a number of parents on that team and they think Iona is loaded up for the next few years. They will have at least 20-25 players on thier varsity team and possibly two JV teams in the CHSHL. I’m told that they will have 4 full lines and rotate 6 defensemen. THey will be very competitive even with the Top player in the County (Cambria) not playing (Playing Juniors for the Rockets). I’m also told that they have 2-3 Freeshman coming in that might go direstly to Varsity. Should be an interesting season in the CHSHL. With St.ANthony’s being the favorite to win this year!

  154. Contributors

There are other high school players from the area who contribute to pretty good D1 club teams. Although they might not have the stats, some play every game and contribute in their own way. On the other hand, there are some players who went from high school to prep school who are on terrible NCAA D3 teams (one in particular did not win one game this year).

  155. predictions

Mamoreneck always finds a way, they have an advantage of having a rink they can use everyday. When some of these other teams only practice on ice maybe once a week. It should be interesting to see who the contenders will be this year. White Plains should be good not losing many players and they have a solid defense. I don’t think LP will be in the top 5 though, mahopac and lakeland will fight it out in the end for a playoff spot. .

  156. ?

does anyone know who is going to be the goalie for either White Plains or Sleepy/Irvington?

  157. don``t believe the hype

Don``t believe the PR machine at Iona. Yes they will be good but the team that had Mc Cabe and King was better than whats coming up. Iona will be good but its no dynasty for sure

  158. Professor

    To: don``t believe the hype,

I’m not saying that the team has players at the Level of King and McCabe at this time. Those two were two of the best around since their Sophomore years. Not only in High School but also in Travel. And Both deserved ALL County First Team Honors! Not too often a team has two players make the All COunty Team in the same year. I know Mamaroneck, Suffern and Clarkstown North has accomplished this feat a few times but it doesn’t happen that often!

What I’m saying is that Iona is quitely putting together a Very strong Hockey program. Tell me what other programs around here that will potentially have a Varsity Program of 20-25 skaters and maybe “TWO” JV programs. That’s pretty impressive. Where most teams have maybe 4 good skaters. Iona will have 20 skaters ata time! But time will tell….If they can’t play as a team, (Like last years team), then they will have problems. Time will tell!

  159. fanotgame

Here is how I see it.

To be ranked in the top 5, you need (i) either a good goalie plus some depth and firepower up front or (ii) if you don’t have a top goalie, you need lock down defense and forwards who can score and get back on the backcheck.

Maybe I am missing some goalies, but the teams with strong goaltending who come to mind right away include Scarsdale and Pawling (if no Brewster jrs conflict), Carmel, Rye (maybe not a starter at Avon, but neither would any of last years goalies from this area including all staters Glaser and Gabriel), Fordham, Stepinac, Pac, Ossining, L/P, New Ro and Pelham. Whoever emerges as the starter for Suffern will also be solid.

The teams that come to mind right away with strength and depth at defense include, Suffern, WP, Iona and Mamo. Not sure what L/P has after Belger, Fordham has after Brown or Stepinac has after Reagan.

Lots of teams have one or two good forwards. Very few can run the three lines necessary to play solid, two way hockey. I don’t rank Scarsdale as having a top offense simply because of Olivario, or Pac because of Mastracola or SHI because of Pesce or New Ro because of Prunesti or Stepinac because of Miano or Brewster because of Flemming/Miller. You need your scorers, but you need depth at forward to go deep in the playoffs and compete with the upstate teams. The top teams at forward are Mamo, Rye and Iona, simply because they will all have some snipers on their 3+ forward lines that will roll all game long. These 3 teams will have the depth to forecheck and backcheck with intensity for 3 periods and wear the opponent down. They may not blow teams out right away, but they will grind it out over time. I think WP, Suffern and L/P will be able to cobble together 2 solid lines which should work fine against all but the best teams.

Taking all this into consideration, I go with the following rankings:

    1. Mamo- they will miss Glaser between the pipes, but will make up for it with lots of skating depth
    2. Iona- See Mamo above. Same issue. Can this team avoid underachieving again?
    3. Rye- Rix just another in a line of top goaltenders (Manire, Donohue, Bennincasa). Young defense will mature as the season goes along. Very deep at forward, including the #1 and #4 returning scorers from the now defunct power league.
    4. Suffern- always in the mix. Norwin a blue line stud. Jaeger can score. Good coach will have a bunch of other talent to mold into a tough team.
    5. L/P- This team will be fun to watch. Have good players at all 3 positions. Do they have the depth to compete with the perreinial powerhouses?
    5. WP- very good defense and some strong forwards. I don’t think goaltending (the most important position) is yet solved.
    5. Fordham- See L/P above. Same analysis.

  160. Rockland

I will be interested in seeing how Suffern responds this year. This year i think marks a true new era of players that will contribute (its no longer the “Natoli, Salt, Ruthberg, Hiller, Hill, McCarron era”, that have been dominating the playing time for the past few years). They have solid staring defense in Norwin and Fuchs, but they will need to figure out the 2nd line of D, and the only proven forward is really Jaeger, so there will be a bunch of new Forwards that will compete for playing time on the first two lines. Should be interesting to see this new era of players.

  161. fanotgame

I think SNS also has a solid goalie. I would put them in the next group of 7 teams which includes, Pac, RCDS, Pelham, Harvey, New Ro and SHI.

  162. agree

I agree with fanotgame you need depth to compete, and scasdale, pac, sleepyhollow only have one player, they will be able to win games against the weaker teams but when it comes to the teams that have three solid lines, one kid cannot do it and the coach will keep them on the ice practically the whole game that at the end they can’t even move I’ve seen it happen.

  163. Professor

    fanotgame,

Think this is going to be a very difficult year for Stepinac…..Lost their Coach and lost Miano (Prep School ….I hear!) Don’t have much left. JV program, feel apart last year so I doubt they can help.

I also don’t think Mamaroneck will be as strong as you think! They lost too much on Defense (Hagen & Glaser) and also on Offense (Fine, Glaser & Jackson). May have the numbers but not the SKATERS

  164. goalies

to answer a previous post. The last I heard, White Plains was thinking of using a converted lacrosse goalie, and SH/I has a freshman who plays for the Vipers named English.

  165. fanotgame

Who are the frontrunners for goalie at Mamo and Suffern? Did Iona get a freshaman from NJ to play in goal? How will Fordham’s junior tandem do? I think the goalie position will be very interesting to follow this season. Some of the better known ones- Gluck, Delaverne and Glaviano either play on teams without a lot of support or have to manage the junior hockey conflict (or both). Other talents at the position that have yet to make a name for themselves in the Section- Rye’s Rix, Pac’s Fatone and L/P’s Chiapparino will have more on ice support to help their cause. Pelham’s Durand is coming back after stepping aside for a prep transer last season and should have success under the Pelham defensive system. Ossining’s Riley played well down the stretch last season and will need to step it up a notch with the loss thru graduation of a bunch of important skaters. Very hard to advance in the p[layoffs without solid goaltending or a bulletproof system that protects the developing goalie.

  166. CHSHL Fan

I think Iona is better positioned this year than Suffern and Mamaroneck. They have two good goalies, one a Sophomore and one a junior. They experienced goalie problems last year, this year Mamaroneck and Suffern will have the same problem. THe difference is that Iona will be loaded up with 4 lines and 3 lines of defensemen. They might not win all their games (ESPECAILLY against St. ANthony’s), but they will be real competitive. Most likely they will play Suffern, but Mamaroneck will never play them. DOn’t know why? ..... you need to talk to Chaps!

Teams with strong Goaltending, have very weak defense.Goalies will get 50-60 shots a game against them. Going to be tough!

  167. iona

Iona will be good up front this year. Goaltending and defense will be questionable. Lets look at the team last year. I believe they were better up front last year but under achieved. having scoring is good but you need defense
Mamaroneck has lots of players and if they do not have superstars they still have quality skaters. Rye has been building each year and Suffern is always good. I would not look past Pelham either they always find a path to the sectional final no matter who they lose

  168. Professor

Iona’s strength will be their defense. Have 3-4 Big defensemen who can hit and skate. With that size and skating ability, their goalie will get alot less shots,

  169. Al Bundy

For Iona’s sake…I hope so. Last years Varsity and JV teams were greatly hyped by Iona posters…and underperformed.

Take a lesson from last years succesful teams, Mamaroneck, Suffern, Pelham, Rye, White Plains, and even Stepinac (last years best local CHSHL team), let the on ice results speak for itself.

  170. Al Bundy

...and can Iona beat Farrell this year? Seems like last years CHSHL champion featured many contributing sophomores..kids who had been featured on those excellent SI Ranger pee wee and bantam travel teams of a couple of years ago.

  171. iona

    professor, i agree

most likely iona is going with the soph. barry in between the pipes…he improved dramatically throughout the jv season and plays alot outside of school

nevertheless, spot on with the D…with cambria most likely not playing and alot of young (not necessarily experienced) talent playing forward, look for iona to play the opposite style from what we remember the past number of years…low scoring games…mainly because of how strong their D is…probably the strongest its been in a while…
patalano, jr, jv captain last season, 6-0, 200, probably hardest shot and hardest hitter on the team…arguably best penalty killer in the slot
lipsky, soph, 6-0, 180, most likely being paired with patalano again, same style of play as patalano but has even better feet
kirincic, sr., 5-9, 160, qb of the D, plays a leetch style game
murphy, jr, grew ALOT over the past year, probably 6-0 now, 170/180, could possibly be harder hitter than patalano..great mind for the game..very well-rounded

then, the 2 seniors that before last year never really played D…so will be interesting to see what turnbull wants to do…
mcardle, 5-11, 190, very skilled with great hands, hits are real mean, former apple core player and made the varsity as a frosh along with cambria
traficante, 6-0, 170/180…great feet and hands…moves the puck well and real smooth…think he’s more of a well-rounded center more than anything else…but has one of the best overall games on the team, hence why turnbull put him back on the line

  172. iona supporter

Hard to acknowledge that a JV player can up to varsity and make a huge impact. The Catholic JV league is not in any way possible close to varsity. I hope those kids can contribute

  173. iona

    iona supporter,

iona’s jv, just like chaminade’s, farrell’s and st. anthony’s, are in another class…hence why the games in jv only matter between those 4, at times with fordham…otherwise, games are 10-0 mercy score

rest assurred, jv players on all the above-mentioned programs play competitive travel…you’ll be pleasantly surprised…no more excuses for these catholics to not call up underclassmen anymore to play in the big show..

  174. fanotgame

Not that Iona’s forwards are weak (they are not- have a bunch of solid AAA and AA skaters at forward- but so do other teams), I always thought Iona would distinguish itself this coming season in relation to other local HS teams with its defense. Don’t know much about the younger kids being discussed, but the Gaels have a bunch of experienced seniors that play a lot of higher level travel hockey who can manage the blue line. All skate very well, especially for the HS level. Kirincic has played the position for many years while Traficante and McElroy are converted forwards. If the kids are not ready for varsity action, I am sure Mcardle can help out back there. That gives you four senior defensemen who can skate well and move the puck. Any other local HS coach would crave that situation.

  175. Not South of the Canadian Border

Al Bundy is correct. The IONA teams I saw had forwards that do not play a lick of defense. I don’t think you can win with a 10th grade goaltender when you have 2 forwards waiting for pucks to pop out of the defensive end so they can take off. It looked pretty scary in the defensive zone.
Its up to Tim and Glenn to fix this, or they can leave it alone and just hope the other CHSHL teams are just dismal.

  176. Al Bundy

How is Farrell this year? They’re defending champions and they received significant contributions fron sophomores last year. These kids were the core of very strong SI Ranger pee wee and bantam travel teams of a few years ago.

This is who Iona must measure up against. Talk of Mamo or Suffern is interesting but of more concern to Iona than it is to the section 1 teams.

  177. Al Bundy

Maybe it’s my computer, this thunderstorm, or I’ve been banned for questioning Iona, but I’m not seeing my posts, so if others are, I’m sorry for the repeat thoughts.

  178. Al Bundy

    I think I figured it out…

My question was, how is Iona going to do against Farrell this year? They were CHSHL champions with solid contributions from sophomores. These kids were the core of a very good SI Ranger PW and bantam travel teams a few years ago. (I spelled out what PW stands for and this probably did not make it through the bad language filter)

This should be Iona’s measuring point.

  179. Why?

Why does it seem that Iona Prep’s Hokey Program is expanding and at the same time Stepinac’s program is going down hill. Why is this???

  180. ip

    why,

many factors, but i will say i do not know all of them accurately…

probably the biggest one is the one that most people don’t realize…stepinac (until now) was part of the archdiocese program for catholic schools (just like maria regina, our lady of victory, etc.)...essentially, part of the church, in which tuition always remained reasonable (kind of capped)...in effect, services were always provided at more basic/necessity levels

iona prep is not affiliated with iona college (the way fordham prep is to fordham u)...and iona prep is also not part of the archdiocese, it is 100% private…short answer here, iona’s pockets (alumni, parents/families, contacts, etc.) are probably 10x deeper than stepinac’s…

the fact that at about 10/15 years ago iona was debating putting a rink on campus (the spot where the arts center is now) should give you a better sense as well..

  181. Rumor Still Exists

With the growing success of the Football,Lacrosse,Soccer at Iona Prep, Rumor has it that they are thinking about putting up another Sporting facility, that will be used for Football/Soccer in the fall, Hockey in the Winter and Lacrosse/Baseball in the Spring.

  182. fanotgame

With the demise of the power league system, conference titles don’t mean much. Its all about state rankings, JN power rankings and playoffs. Here are my predictions for end of season playoff seedings (top 8) in Section One with asterisk(*) for teams that have a good shot at end of season (final) NYS Sportswriter poll state “top 10” rankings:

    DI:

    Mamo *
    Suffern *
    L/P
    WP
    Pac
    New Ro
    North
    ETB

    DII:

    Rye *
    Pelham
    SNS
    SHI
    Brewster
    Pearl River
    Ossining
    Byram Hills

Just because a team didn’t get an asterisk, doesn’t mean they are not good. Some good teams may not have the opportunity to get upstate exposure or have a history of being considered by the sportswriters. Pelham will likely get some early season votes off last season’s performance, especially if they get off to a good start this coming season. But, they might get knocked around a bit in their conference. If they are successful in their upstate tourneys, the Pelicans will also find themselves on the late season state rankings.

BTW, the only Section One teams that have made the Sportswriter final rankings in each of the last 3 seasons are Suffern for DI and Rye for DII.

  183. ip

    rumor still exists,

with alums and families like cappelli, mara, ambrose, mottola, dobbins, gillespie, pellow, jakeway, rooney, valenti, harrington, magnan, chirico, longhitano, etc…and now mariano rivera and diddy, definitely possible…

  184. CN

All this talk is nice and all, but no one really knows untill the season starts. CN doesn’t have the team from last year, but they are not as bad as everyone thinks. They have a senior goalie, a senior first line, the top defenseman in the county and a few sophmores who were not in the team last year.

Their schedule is packed with good competition which will only make them stronger as the season goes on.

  185. Rockland

Nobody said CN would be bad. They definetely have a chance to have a winning record. They defintely do have a very respectable all Senior first line, a solid starting D and a Senior goalie.

Are there any freshmen or sophomore newcomers that will see some ice time and will contribute?

  186. Rockland Hockey

CN defintely has a chance to have another winning record this season, due to the fact they have:

    – A solid and very respectable Senior first line – A very serviceable 2nd line of offense led by a couple good Juniors that can skate – A solid starting D that is capable of putting the puck in the net – A Senior goalie

Any freshmen or sophomore newcomers that will make an impact?

  187. Nueve-Uno-Cuatro

    Top defenseman in the county?

    Me no think so…

Norwin is the best defenseman in Rockland.

  188. fanotgame

To CN- There are not huge talent gaps among the teams in the top 1/2 of the Section. So, on any given day, any team in the top 1/2 can give any other team a good game. Last season’s parity is what made it so special. Exciting playoffs. In the quarters, your North team took a 4-0 lead on WP, only to see the Tigers roar back for the win. It would not surprise me if your team did something similar this coming season.

  189. Rockland

Nobody said CN was going to be bad – in fact, I think they have a chance to have a winning record, given the fact that they have:

    – A solid and very respectable all Senior first line – A serviceable 2nd line that can eat a good chunk of ice time, led by a couple good skating Juniors – A solid starting D that can move the puck up ice like forwards and also have the ability to score – A Senior goaltender

so while they do not have the dynamic 1-2 scoring punch like they did last year, they will be a competitive team

any freshmen or sophomore newcomers that will make an impact?

  190. Agree

Norwin is #1 D in Rockland, but CN’s Byrnes is definetely #2. i also don’t think CN will be bad this year, they have some solid Senior & Junior level talent that will be good enough to make them competitive.

  191. Agree

any newcomer freshmen or sophomores that will make an impact on this year’s CN team?

  192. fanotgame

Best D in the Section include:

    McGee
    Norwin
    Belger
    Christiansen
    Byrnes

Add Marinelli if he recovers from knee injury and Ciotti if he plays HS along with Jrs.

  193. no way

I know I am a little late with this JRS vs HS,but I have to say my son played both at the same time with rarely a conflict and after it ended his Jr coach told him the best thing to do was to go straight to college and not start it at 21,it was the best move he made, and besides the chance to actually graduate early with a 4 yr degree,he is still playing college hockey in the ACHA.This might not work for everyone but I have seen many kids try prep or a couple of extra yrs of juniors and it got them no where, or after spending all the extra monies they are playing at the same level as my son if at all.I am not saying that trying this is bad but how long do you wait to figure it out especially in these times.there have only been a handful of players even continue playing (college level) after HS from this area and the ones that do either dont play much or play on lower level teams that take what they can get.So my point is make your decision wisely, because the competition is unbelievable.

  194. Al Bundy

CN should be respectable next year, but I think Pearl River can surprise in the Rockland league. They have a good young (soph) goalie returning, while most of the Rockland teams are going into the season with big ?? at that position.

  195. Rockland

I know CN will have solid Senior & Junior level talent, but are there any Freshmen or Sophomore newcomers that will look to contribute this year?

  196. ACHA

Can you play college hockey at 18 right out of HS, if you are not highly drafted and one of the few who go to BU, BC, Michigan or Minnesota? Yes, but here is the catch-22. If you are good enough at 18 to play for a competitive NCAA D. 3 team or a top D. 1 club team, that means you are an incredible player….Now here is the catch…No coach is going to believe you are good enough to step in at 18 and play for say a Delaware, or Elmira, Illionois or Norwich, etc…..9 times out of 10, the coaches would say, if the kid was good enough at 18 to play here, than why wouldn’t he just play a year or 2 of juniors and then get a full scholorship…....Because that is the truth, if you can step on the ice at age 18 and be on the first two lines at Penn State, than you would be all but guaranteed a D. 1 scholorship with two more years of training.

  197. College hockey

Let’s be real here—you have to be EXCEPTIONALLY INCREDIBLE to be able to get a D1 scholarship!!! And able to compete with the Canadian and other country players!!!! Take a look at Elmira’s roster—most of the team is made up of non-U.S. players. You might think you are incredible until you see that there are many more incredible players than you. Of course, there are those that are exceptional but in our area it is probably few and far between and the real world will be waiting after college!!!!

  198. ACHA

Not the point, take another look at Elmiras roster, and you wont see any 18 year old freshman.

  199. The Truth

The Truth may Hurt….......But there’s NOT one player, who is currently playing High School or Travel around this area that has a Chance to play D1 or D3. It’s just not going to happen.

PLease remember that I’m talking about High School Players Today, Not your Clares,Daniels or New’s from the past few years. The level of Hockey around here is dropping fast. If you’re any good, you have been plucked out of he system and playing for a USA Development team by the age of 14-15.

Look at the past super stars…....Conners, Jackson,Rui, Sigona,Eck,Novick, Shulman, Willows, King etc…... WHere are they today? These TALENTED players didn’t even get a Sniff at Higher level Hockey.WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU? Here’s a question for the Players and parents to ask themselves…....Are you better than the players mentioned above? If not….GO to directly to College, because if the players mentioned above couldn’t get to that next level, then why do you think that you’re going to make it?. If you are better?, then keep trying because there might be an opportunity for you somewhere?

ACHA is 100% CORRECT! THe talent level after High School is 100 times better than what a player around here is use to! When you start playing with the Swedes,Canadians and Russians it’s time to HANG upo the Skates! Ask Rui!One of the best around here….but keeps going to one junior team to another. He’s lucky if he’s on the third line of a low level Junior program.

  200. And . . .

you don’t see many American players on that Elmira team whether they are 18 or 21. Unless you are an INCREDIBLE American player you will not make a D1 team (never mind a scholarship) whether you are 18, 19, 20, 21, spend years on juniors after high school, etc., over a non-U.S. player who is any age. ACHA – you missed the point. If you weren’t incredible at 18 who says you are going to be incredible at 21. It rarely happens around here. Go to college, get a good education, and play club hockey. The real world is fast approaching.

  201. mamofan

Look, mamaroneck will still have a solid team with players like christiansen, naclerio, hagen, connor and chapperelli. wouldn’t be surprised if they go pretty far this season…

  202. ACHA

Thanks for the support “The Truth”, but I think there are a few kids in our area that have a chance (not great, nor poor), but just a chance at being a big time college player…Prunesti, The Pesce who was a freshman last year, Broderick would be a nice player for someone in 3 or 4 years, and Jaeger (I probaly missed one or two)...Not saying these players will be drafted, but I can see these 4 contributing to a very good college team someday.

My point with the 18 year olds, is that if they are indeed good enough to step in at 18 and play for a big time D. 1 club team or NCAA D. 3 team, than I would say its safe to assume that in 2 more seasons they would be good enough to play NCAA D. 1…. Infact it has happened in a few cases in which a player used D. 1 club or NCAA D.3 as a stepping stone to play D. 1 instead of going to juniors.

  203. The Truth

    ACHA,

I have to disagree with you, the players you mentioned are good players. Nothing special! When you look at the stars in the past( Conners, King, Willows, Rui,Salt,Sigona & Ruthberg), THese seven players were dominate players in High School and Travel. And they dominated from their sophomore years to their senior years! ANd the competiton was alot tougher. Many of today’s teams are very just low on talent. The players you mentioned(in my opinion), don’t even come close when it comes to overall talent versus the players of the past. MAYBE good club players but D1 or D3….NoWAY! (sorry)..

  204. fanotgame

Mamofan, Is Gardiner playing for the Tigers this coming season?

  205. Hockey Fan

    ACHA.

Sorry to disagree with you but those players you mentioned are OK. Nothing special but just OK. If your Willow’s, Salt’s, Ruthberg’s, King’, Conner’s, Sigona’s and Rui’s can’t make the next level! Then there’s NO WAY those players are “BIG TIME” college players. It’s just not happening!

  206. Sk8r

TC from Mamaroneck is playing div 3 at hobart.

  207. tigres

    fanotgame,

no, hes going off to prep

  208. Hockey Fan

    Sk8r,

Yes he is…....I think he’s a sophomore this year. He’s also a player that went to Prep school and then played Juniors and ended up at a good D3 program. QUestion…Was it worth it? Don’t know! All I know is he was the Top player in the area when he played High School Hockey 5-6 years ago. He goes up to Hobart and scores “5” goals. Just shows how difficult it is once you leave the safety of a Good High School Program. Could of been finished wqith college last year, but now still has three years to go!

  209. Hockey Fan

Sk8r, TC left high school 6-7 years ago and is Now a Sophomore that only scored 5 goals last year…Was it worth it? Don’t know?

  210. houy

what about mamks christiansen…off to prep or staying?

  211. h

    its august 2nd…

  212. Capalbo

Yes Capalbo is playing at Hobart. D 3
Heres the difference though. He was the top player in high school while he was in high school. He went to a high level prep hockey school then played juniors. Congratulations to Tommy but he is the exception not the norm. If you were not as good as Tommy when you were in high school you probably wont make it

  213. LEAGUE GAMES ARE OUT!!!

    Change the conversation!

    League schedules are out!

My Holiday Party? 12/23 Rye vs. Mamaroneck at Playland – 7:45pm

Another favorite – 2/3 Rye vs. Pelham at Playland – 7:45pm.

  214. fanotgame

Looks like Rye only has to play SNS and RTH 2X from conference 3. If you add those 4 games to the other 5 games in conference, the 6 games against upstate teams (3 tourneys), plus Mamo, Pelham, Fordham and RCDS, that leaves one game. Hope the Garnets can get the Mounties, WP or Iona on the schedule.

  215. fanotgame

to Tigres and mamofan- Loss of Gardiner is significant. Even though he was injured most of last season, I thought he was the best returning talent on the team. You guys have tons of depth, but he is a very good hockey player that is not easily replaced. This makes the Mamo/Suffern race a little closer.

  216. Al Bundy

Playing club hockey is a commendable goal. It can take 1 or 2 years after high school to get to a good club program.

The supply and demand of NCAA D1 and D3 programs is why many from this area do not play D1 or D3. While almost very large and small college and community college in this country have baseball and basketball programs, we can thus name 20 or more local kids each year who play these sports in college.

If you can get yourself into a good college club hockey situation for your last 2 years of eligibility, this is just as good, if not better than playing D3 basketball for “Podunk” College.

All the top players in this area have the ability to play good club hockey. Can or do they want to put in the additional work after high school to do this?

  217. agree

Does anyone know the boces webite site that has the high shcool schedule.

  218. to agree

just go to google and type in section1 athletics or go to http://athleticsdb.lhric.org/

  219. Sec1 Fan

fanotgame, Gardiner is way overated. He is a puck hog with bad hands. Not a team player at all. He gave up the puck in his own zone trying to skate with it and cost Mamaroneck a State Title. He is not a smart player and often gets stupid penalties trying to crush kids. He plays football out on the ice. This fan will not miss him at all. Good riddance.

  220. WP

I’m surprised not more people are picking White Plains. Goaltending is the obvious question mark, but what is Mamaroneck or Suffern bringing back in goal?

White Plains brings back more skaters from last years section finalist than either Mamo or Suff.

  221. HOCKEY MOM

Sorry but I must chime in with my opinion, so don’t attack me as usually for it! Playing in HS and Juniors is attainable and going onto play a higher level of Juniors after HS before college is the players desire of following their dream. Rui played for his HS and his Junior team and got a lot of grief for it by the “bloggers!” He continued playing Juniors this year and took some classes at WCC because you can only go part time so as not to give up your eligbility to play 4 full years. He is going to the NAHL to play Juniors again this year. Going out west to play Juniors in the USHL or the NAHL is free. You do not pay the exorporant “tuition” you pay here in the East. You billet with a family and you are taken care of becasue in those towns/cities out West, you are that cities team to follow, not like here in the East where you have say the Yankees, Mets, Rangers, Giants, or Jets. It is unbelievable the turnout at these games! People talk about the route but talk without having expoerienced it. It is hard and a long road to try for that dream that you want. D3 colleges asked Rui what his plans were for THIS year but he wants to try for that D1 team…should he be denied that dream because it is too hard or too long a road till college, or that other people don’t think he has the talent? I think not. I give him a lot of credit for persevering and trying to get his dream along with everyone else from his year who is trying. Wish them luck, toute their talent instead of putting them down! Whoever said that we hear in the East are sooo stuck on the going to college right out of HS is correct. I know I did it and my career has nothing to do with the degree I received. So if you dream it, go for it, and the best of luck to those who achieve it! As far as the EJHL EVER being the second best Junior league in the nation is dreaming. The USHL & NAHL are the top Junior programs in the nation. I do not agree with it but unfortunately it is reality. I would also say the the NJ Rockets, which is the AJHL and so is the Hitmen, are far better programs than any in the EJHL!

  222. Nueve-Uno-Cuatro

    Hitmen are EJHL.

  223. HOCKEY MOM

Sorry Nueve-Uno-Cuatro you are wrong….it is the AJHL. Here is the website http://www.ajhlhockey.org/...check the teams out and let me know if you find out otherwise!

  224. HOCKEY MOM

Ooooh my mistake. I meant the NJ Bobcats. I meant them and the NJ Rockets are the best Junior teams, programs. Soooo sorry Bobcats for confusing you with the Hitmen.

  225. ejhl

Sorry but the EJHL is way better just look at how many more college commitments they have also look at nationals the past 2 years both teams in the finals were from the EJ[NJ Hitmen and NH Monarchs]. Last year when Rui was playing for Applecore who had the 3rd worst record in the EJ they beat the Bobcats 5-0 who were the second best AJHL team so this shows the bottom half of the EJ is clearly better then the top of AJHL also both AJHL teams at natinals were a combined 1-3-2 while both EJHL teams had a combined record of 9-1-0 so please the EJHL is clearly better then the AJHL.

  226. fanotgame

To WP- I think your Tigers will also be very good. McGee is the best defensemen in the Section. Maybe one of the best in the state. Klimchuck and Peeples also solid on the blue line. You will have two lines of solid forwards. No dominant ones, but a group that play well together up front. The big question is at the most important position- goalie. If those forwards use some of their energy to get back and protect the goalie and the defense plays shut down, WP will be a tough out just like last season.

  227. Waste of Time

Rui is wasting his time….. Will never be a D1 player.Doubt he can make a D3 team. He is an OK player. Did well in High School and disappeared in juniors…ANd that’s the TRUTH!

  228. sec1fan

    Junior Comparisons

First off the USHL is the top of the food chain. No league compares.

The NAHL is the 2nd best league which is supported by the # of D1 committments. The EJHL is the 3rd best league and by far the best league in the East. The EJ has more Hockey East committments then any other American junior league besides the USHL. The entire AJHL hasn’t had D1 committments over the past 3 years that would total the # of committments the Hitmen had from this past season alone. Lets try to leave personal experiences out of the equation. The leagues should be graded on their success rate of placing kids at the collegiate level. Its absurd to to suggest that the Rockets or the Bobcats are on par (forget better) with the Hitmen program.

I’m at a loss for how anyone can pass judgement on a player who just made an NAHL team. Anybody who reaches that level is at the very least making a run at playing D1 hockey. His performance during the season will dictate where he lands. It will certainly not be decided by a poster on the blog.

  229. WP

You sound like a former HS player, probably pretty talented and you played around the same time as Rui, perhaps all section or some similar honor. However, you didn’t have the desire or more likely, the discipline, to attain the next level.

I hope your rant helps you feel just a little better about yourself.

  230. Al Bundy

Sec1 Fan…your defense of the Junior player was appropriate, but why the earlier harsh assessment of the HS player going to prep school. Not neccessary. (My apologies to you if there are more than one “Sec1 Fan” posters).

  231. Nueve-Uno-Cuatro

    Hockeymom….
You are wrong about the AJHL and the EJHL. The EJHL is far superior.

“let me know if you find out otherwise!”

Time and time again you have proven that your hockey knowledge other than info about your son is limited.

  232. Nueve-Uno-Cuatro

there are a bunch of sec1fans.

The one attacking the mamo player is Sec1 Fan.
The one defending Rui is sec1fan.
And the one who used to be on here all the time was sec1 fan.

  233. HOCKEY MOM

Thank you for the supporters. The Truth, Hockey Fan (as usual) and Waste of Time – you are wrong and have no clue about what Rui has acoomplished or received as far as offers for college. He was already offered the opportunity to play D3 or D1 Club, whether you want to believe it or not!. It is your right but you are wrong and just conning yourselves. Disappeared in Juniors….guess you haven’t followed his Juniors career and that is all I need to say about that statement! From Junior team to Junior team…oh yeah because why…do I need to spell it out for you or do you want to continue to claim it is because he can’t play “good enough?” Whatever!

Several people twisted my words but whatever makes you happy! What I stated was that the USHL & the NAHL are the top Junior programs. Then said “the NJ Rockets, which is the AJHL and so is the Hitmen, (when I meant Bobcats) are far better programs than any in the EJHL and this is where I should have said “around here.” MA and New Hampshire teams are diffeernt stories altogether. I should have stated NY & NJ when comparing leagues or more specifically teams. Rockets over Applecore anyday of the week!

My hockey knowlegdge is just fine and following my boys (it was never just about Rui and anyone who knows me knows that and who they are) has been and continues to be awesome. I didn’t know it was a test/contest. Of course it is my opinion/feelings from my experiences about the process as I know it. How else do you speak about things…..from your Arsch? Oh right…that’s what you three do!

  234. HOCKEY MOM

BTW – that was meant for you as well “Nueve-Uno-Cuatro”

  235. sec1fan

Bundy, NUC is correct, that post wasn’t mine.

For the record, the Hitmen are from around here. Located in Wayne NJ may put them at a shorter ride from white plains then applecore, rockets or bobcats.

As far as the D3/D1 club offers, I’m sure thats the truth. Most of the NAHL players would find similiar levels of success. Congrats and good luck.

The EJHL is the strongest league on the east coast. Applecore’s program is a good one. Although they haven’t had many D1 committments recently, they have had numerous D3 placements (just as many as the Bobcats and/or Rockets). If you go back a few years you will find several D1 placements. It may not have worked out for everyone but there are many players that are thankful that they played there.

  236. Nueve-Uno-Cuatro

I didn’t speak from my “Arsch,” you did. You posted a comment that was inaccurate on a bunch of levels. You said the Hitmen were in the AJHL, I corrected you, and you not only stood by your inaccurate statement, but did it in an impolite and rude fashion.

Locally, the top dogs are the Hitmen, they are a very good team, in the better league than the Rockets or the Bobcats.

  237. HOCKEY MOM

sec1fan thank you for your wishes. I can not vouch for previous commitments but can say that over the last 4-5 years that the Applecore’s program is not the same Applecore…the program has been on a continual downslide. Several of their playeres are now playing for the Rockets. It is not the league being better but the program and the coach who is truly interested and cares about a players desire to commit and wanting to play at the next level. I have to disagree with you on commitments. I checked both the websites and don’t see it waht you are talking about. Four players form this years Rockets team commited to D1 colleges and one to D3. No commitments at all for Applecore!
Uno-Cuatro you still are trying to twist it but it’s ok. You got the point!

  238. sec1fan

Easy there H-Mom. I’ve read your posts about applecore when your son left the program. I also remember your posts boasting about the high level your son was playing when you were happy with applecore. At this point its clear that you have nothing positive to say about the program which we all have to take with a grain of salt.

You mention that 4 players from “this year’s” rocket team committed to D1 programs. CJ Lee hasn’t played for the rockets for about 2 1/2 years. He was a green bay gambler the past 2 seasons of the USHL. Parker, was on Indiana, also of the USHL and will continue there this season. The other two commitments are 92’s and its not clear where they will be playing the next year or two before entering school. Kolomitas is D1 material, just not sure what path he’ll choose to take(but is playing USHL this coming season). The rockets are a stepping stone to higher levels that may result in a few D1 placements after moving to another jr league(outstanding for an AJHL team). The hitmen have numerous players going directly from the Hitmen to their college destinations(as do the Monarchs and several other EJHL teams).

As for the “awful” Applecore program, they too have a few D1 hockey players on several rosters. You fail to mention the Burdorfer twins both at RPI who moved thru the ACore program(maybe 2 yrs or less older then your own son). Joey Diamond, a long time applecore product who is entering UMaine (maybe a yr older then your son, does this count as a committment for this year’s team?). Chiavetta entered D1 last season, I beleive directly after an EJHL season. The others mentioned had to move to a higher level junior league(although one of the twins might have gone from ACore to RPI) before entering College. This is NOT unlike the Rockets recent successes where players had to further develop before embarking on Collegiate careers.

Programs have good and bad years. Applecore is in the best junior league on the east coast, hands down. They have had significant success throughout their history. By their standards, the last year or two have been down years. The Rockets are also a great program that in one year may have slightly outdone Applecore but that is not grounds for saying they’re the superior program.

  239. ENOUGH

Any player from this area that has moved on to play ANY high level of hockey after H.S, be it any level of club (who are you to say DI, II or III is not good), any level of NCAA (enough said – NCAA) and any level of Juniors has gone further than 99% of you.

Bottom line: if you have to sit at your computer and put down players or programs or their choices, you’re not a hockey player.

Kudos to all those that chose to go to a higher level and made it and kudos to all of the players from here who chose to stop playing as well.

I guarantee no negative poster on this blog could accomplish a quarter of what they have.

  240. HOCKEY MOM

    Enough…well said.

sec1fan (another usual basher, you never change!) You are the one that everyone knows to take with a grain of salt because you are just not a nice person. I have never put any player down the way you have and follow the game and the players I know because I love it and them. I don’t come on here and bash players as you and all the other disgusting people do! As far as my statements about teams, I never meant leagues, a mistake on my part earlier, it is my experience from Rui being on them and seeing what the coach has done for his players that I base my statements on. What do you base your statements on, the same thing as Nueve-Uno-Cuatro…no doubt! BTW – never touted Applecore but maybe Juniors itself!

  241. to hockey mom

Applecore is a way better program then the Rockets and Bobcats just look at thier alumni page most recently a kid commited to BU also they destroyed the Bobcats like 5-0 last year and the Bobcats were better then the Rockets as for the Hitmen they had about 7 D1 commitments this year so please the EJ teams in this area blow away the AJ teams around here college wise and playing wise.

  242. fanotgame

Kevin Tuohy from Salisbury Mills who played thru Bantams at Westchester Express in Brewster before heading west to enroll at Shattuck St Mary’s (Sydney Crosby played HS hockey there) was also drafted as a defensemen by the NAHL’s North Iowa team. Tuohy played forward for the ‘07 Hudson Valley Empires team (with Natoli,Reagan, McCabe, King, Ojeda, Conner, Eck, Salt, Molinaro, Rodeschini, ect). Good luck to local boys Rui and Kevin this coming season at this very high level hockey.

  243. HOCKEY MOM

Do you need reading and comprehension classes….Again, I meant coaching/teams not EJ vs AJ. I made a mistake and corrected myself about three times now!

  244. HOCKEY MOM

fanotgame – Shattuck St Mary’s has put out some outstanding players, alot of drafts this season to the USHL. Thanks for the wishes!

  245. sec1fan

    HMom,

Several people use the “sec1fan” name in one form or another. A number of those using that identification have bashed local players to my dismay. I can’t try to clarify every post using sec1fan as not having been mine. For those readers who think they may know who I am, I will have to trust that they know the “player bashing” posts are not mine. Sometimes a variation of the handle is used and sometimes its exactly the same. I understand your disposition to me being you have no way of identifying those that are mine vs those that are not.

I’ve never bashed any player nor would I ever. I will however address posters who mislead other readers with their personal agendas. Some of the readers on this blog have sons at various stages of their hockey playing careers. This blog can be a source of information that can be used to help make important decisions. Posts that “bash” leagues or programs are NOT helpful. It is difficult to maintain objectivity when trying to present “facts” in this arena. In trying to provide the most useful information, one should maintain as much integrity as possible.

Applecore has been a good experience for many of the players that have traveled its path. Some players, like your son apparently, it didn’t work out for. It is not a reflection of your sons ability nor is it a reflection of the competence of the program. If you want to talk about where the applecore program fits in use facts about their collegiate placements (directly and indirectly) in comparison to the other alternatives.

Several of your comments are suspect. You stated the AJHl is the superior league to the EJHL. You stated that the rockets and the bobcats are the best junior programs around. The facts surrounding college placements don’t support your conclusions. You attempted to clarify by saying that the EJHL has good teams but they are located in New England (Mass & NH). Again this is not true. The Hitmen are the BEST junior program in this area. There are no EJHL teams that can boast a better track record then this program over the last 2 to 3 years.

Your post about me bashing anyone was in response to my post taking issue with yours. I didn’t bash anyone except to take aim at your comments. It seems that anyone who disagrees with you and states facts (as I did) is categorized as a “basher” by you. Everything you post is tooting your own horn, it makes no attempt to help anyone else traveling the hockey “development” path.

  246. fanotgame

Maybe one reason why people tout the NJ Rockets junior experience is because the Rocket’s coach happens to be a USHL scout. Maybe he gets a few of the Rockets kids a shot to play in that top US junior league. Didn’t Rui get called up to USHL’s North Dakota team last year? That call up may have been facilitated by the Rockets coach doubling as the USHL scout. If your goal is to get to the USHL with its superior exposure to college programs, but you didn’t make it on draft day, the Rockets are a good choice to keep in touch with the USHL.

  247. Nueve-Uno-Cuatro

    Sec1fan- Thank You.

  248. LoHud Hockey

I like the new sec1fan. Seems very well informed and has some pretty well-researched posts (contrary to what HOCKEY MOM thinks). And he doesn’t seem as Pelham-biased as the former sec1fan who was kicking around here for the last couple of years.

sec1 fan is dead, long live sec1fan!!!

  249. too much propaganda for me

Its too much propaganda for me here. Without calling out a specific poster I will say that any ‘mom” is going to see things her sons way. I saw her son play in high school and I liked him. However moving up to the next “levels” is totally different. Of course I root for him, and wish him the best as from what I observed he works his butt off to be a player. Having mom come on is a bit much. If your son is in the public hockey eye there will be critics and supporters and thats life.
I think most of the junior programs in the area are not producing what we would like them too. There is too much competition around the country and the world. No harm in taking it as far as you can though. Everyone must be realistic and unfortunately many parents are not
I hope after all the juniors tryouts, showcases, travel games teams etc that something worthwhile happens. but the odds are not in the favor of almost all of our kids

  250. sec1fan

Thank you Lohud. I’ve always read your posts as they are informative without a twist. Thank you for providing so much insight to section one hockey tradition and history.

NUC- you’re welcome. I was however defending my own comments.

  251. HOCKEY MOM

sec1fan I do not tout my own or sons horn and have only blogged in response to other bloggers when it’s Rui bashing time. NEVER have I ever come on here without someone slamming or bringing him up or any of the other players I follow. it is convenient to forget all my other post for them thought…I know guys. makes you feel better!
My first post last night was just about the process as I have experienced it because that was the topic prior to my post. At the end of that post, I made one remark that EVERYONE jumped all ove me for and you guys still get into the EJ vs AJ. GET OVER IT! I corrected myself but you MEN still want to harp on it. At least I can admit I made the mistake! It is soooo typical & chauvanistic and so is the statement that as a Mom I have no right on here. Why is that….are you GUYS from the stone age?
Tell me when I have ever said anything good about Applecore. People talk about that program but do not know what has gone on or that most players who have the talent to go to the next level, leave after a year or two. You do not have to take my word for it but ask the local players who have left and made the switch to the Rockets & Bobcats. If you were still invovled in Juniors (meaning still going to games, tournaments, CA)and know the area’s kids who are in these programs, you would understand my statements.

What makes it ok for Dad’s to blog but not Mom’s Do you think we aren’t interested or don’t make the sacrifices for our son’s careers as well? Well get into the 21st century. I am not intimidated nor will I back down to any MAN/DAD because I am a woman and “just a Mom!”

And yes…there are more than one sec1fans and I can not differ between them but know the bashing is from one. If it is not you…so sorry. Why do you all have to be anonymous anyway? Afraid to let anyone know who you are and what your comments are?....Another problem I never had letting you know who I am when I blog, why do you feel it necessary?

  252. all men?

Is everyone who blogs here a male? If so how do we know that? Is their a box we check off? Why is someone making these assumptions?
We will see who ends up where when the dust clears. I hope all the kids from our area excel but to spend so much time money to maybe get to a D 3 program, which by the way NO D3 school is allowed to give athletic scholarships seems like a lot

  253. LoHud Hockey

    HOCKEY MOM-

You are the one turning this into a male vs. female thing with your last post. Nobody said anything about that or even cared about it until you said something. It wouldn’t matter if you were Rui’s mother, father, uncle, brother, great-grandfather, or second cousin twice removed. When one poster comes on here and is constantly talking about one particular kid, the people in general get tired of it. You’re on here just as often as myself, fanotgame, Al Bundy, etc. so I can’t imagine you haven’t noticed that. It also doesn’t help when you get extremely defensive any time anyone says something that you disagree with whether it is directly related, indirectly related, or not at all related to your son.

The reason it is brought up that you are his mother is not because of your gender, it is because your screen name is HOCKEY MOM!!!!!! If you changed your screen name to “RUI’S UNCLE” people would make the same comments, only they would complain that the kid’s Uncle doesn’t need to keep coming on here to hype him up.

  254. HIGH (SCHOOL) sticking???

Has anyone recently noticed the name of this blog??? Why is there so much focus on a player a year+ out of high school “following his dream?” And I won’t go into parents who don’t have HS players who regularly contribute (but have an awful lot to say). Get a life! Let’s focus on the HS players and someone else start a blog on Juniors and beyond.

  255. enough already

GREAT POST by last two posters

Exactly, he is out of high school and is gone for all intended purposes. Why is he being discussed? Unless he got onto a D 1 team or got drafted it should be old news. His mother, if thats really who she is, should stop wasting time because its meaningless and who cares where he plays right now. Its so tiring to read it.

  256. sec1fan

    Hmom

On the “Mom” issue, I think you missed the point. It wasn’t a Mom vs Dad comment. It was about a “parent” blogging about their own child that the post was questioning.

I’d be more then happy to say who I am when the time allows for it. I still have a son involved in the HS hockey playing community. Its my opinion that blogging with my identity known will only create an environment that makes my son a target of discussion. Personally, I don’t think thats fair to him. My son’s name has been mentioned several times on here and I chose not to respond to the good or the bad. From what I see, doing so only causes the child’s name to be perpetually spoken about on here. Each parent has to decide what approach best suits them and their child.

My purpose for reading and commenting on this blog has nothing to do with defending or promoting my son’s hockey endeavors. I find some of the discussions interesting. I have an extensive amount of experience with youth hockey. I try to impart as much information as I can without predjudice to help those traveling on paths I’ve already been on. Some of what I say isn’t popular. I’m not trying to say what everyone wants to hear. Hockey is a tough path to travel as you know. It doesn’t come with an instruction booklet. There are alot of self serving opinions being thrown around that aren’t helpful. Some of them are just from inexperience. Most of what I post is about actual success stories and how they happened. What paths those players traveled and where it led.

Last year you took exception to a post I made about playing local HS as a senior and where that has led to. I wasn’t making an assessment of your sons ability. My point was that this path hasn’t seen any recent D1 successes. Assuming your son does land at the D1 level, it still doesn’t mean that the path isn’t the more difficult one to travel. I sited all the westchester and rockland D1 placements and how they got there. The one thing they ALL had in common was that none of them stayed for their local HS senior years. Doesn’t mean its impossible to do, its just not how its been done recently. For some people, this is important information. If my son is trying to make a D1 program, I would certainly like to know what was involved in the local D1 success stories. The same can be said about D3 and Club.

I am still having trouble with what you’re saying about applecore. For the record, I have no affinity for applecore or the hitmen. I will give credit where credit is do. Hockey is frustrating and there is a fair amount of pressure on the player and his family. When things aren’t going right, changes usually follow. Players leaving applecore is of no surprise. There are however, players that have stayed because things have been good for them.

For the record, more former applecore players need to be mentioned. Escobedo and Bitetto both moved to the USHL from applecore. The few Rocket success stories all involve moving to a higher junior level as well. Both will be playing D1. Escobedo at BU and Bitetto at another hockey east school(announcement should follow shortly). Nick Grasso signed with D1 AIC. Applecore helped him by trading him late in the season to the hitmen so he could get playoff exposure. All 3 of these D1 committments played last season for applecore or the season before(not bad for down years). I’m sure you are familiar with at least 2 of these players but have never mentioned them as applecore alumni. Isn’t this relevent information to the discussion on this blog? Doesn’t it change the picture of what applecore has done recently? If I’m considering applecore for my son, isn’t this information that might help me make my decision? If I listened to what you say about applecore and decide not to send my son there, how might I feel after I learn that applecore does have recent D1 placements?

It isn’t about being a Mom or a Dad, its about interacting and helping the blogging community. Provide as accurate a picture as possible. If something I’ve said is inaccurate, I hope someone corrects me, I too will learn something. Be fair and forthcoming about ALL the facts whether you like them or not.

  257. Change of Subject

All the college and post-high school hockey talk is great, but how about we get back to the high school hockey talk. Anyone want to name top players for this year in Rockland and Westchester? Any surprise teams to watch out for?

  258. new topic

    Conf1-Belgers,Caffery,Mastrocola DElavergne,Miller,Fleming
    Conf2-S.Hagen,Prunesti,Pesces,Oliverio,Gluck,Broderick,Mcgee
    Conf3-Mundinger,Katsuta
    Conf4-Jager,Byrnes,Meyers

I’m sure I missed some players feel free to pick your own from each conference and from conf.2 Hagen and Ciotti are off playin prep and juniors so I don’t think they are allowed to play which is why I didn’t pick them.

  259. upcoming season

I think that suffern is very underrated coming into this year. just like every year they lose big name players and the next year players who didnt play the year before step up. look at last year when fuchs stepped in as the 3rd defenseman and did well and redgate a freshman played a big role on the team. Goaltending is the only question mark for the suffern team but i think he will be fine. Look out for the mounties this year after 2 years without a section championship they’re going to be hungry.

  260. fanotgame

To New Topic- You missed Suffern’s Norwin in Conf 4. Was HM All State last year and should be one of the best players in the Section this coming season. I also think Mamo’s Christiansen will be an impact player in Conference 2.

  261. Al Bundy

Other top Conference 4 (Rockland )players to include, by team, include,

Suffern – Norwin (a glaring ommision from the previous post)
    North Rockland – Meigh
    Pearl River – Conway
    North – Kapnick
    Tappan Zee/Nyack – McGiveny, just a soph

  262. Al Bundy

Just to get a little ahead of myself.I like Suffern next year for Section championship, Will be very underclassmen oriented this year. Lots of Sophomore and Junior talent and numbers.

Still don’t think they’ll have quite enough to overtake Mamo or White Plains this year, especially considering that all 3 teams have unkowns at goal.

Perhaps which team comes up with the best goaltending will be the division 1 champion.

  263. Rockland

Don’t underestimate CN this year, I’m not saying that will win the Section, but they will be competitive for the following reasons:

    – All Senior first line – Serviceable and good skating 2nd line led by a couple Juniors – Senior goalie – Top 3 defenseman return, and all have the potential to score

Does CN have any other newcomers that will look to contribute?

  264. Rockland

Top 5 players for the teams I know best:

Suffern – Jaeger, Norwin, Redgate, Nicholson & the goalie
North – Kapnick, Cohen, Vela, Byrnes & Alex Willows

  265. Al Bundy

What differentiates CN from most of the rest of Rockland, lets exclude Suffern, is the senior in goaltending. A Macindoe type goalie is tough to replace, but they’ll have a senior, expierenced travel, and well trained type in nets.

Not many of the other schools have this, athough I also like the youg Pearl River goalie.

As far as skaters go, not much separates the abilities of the North, South, North Rockland and Pearl River skaters. I expect competitive games among this group.

Of course Suffern stands above this group and regrettably Tappan Zee/Nyack may once again be experiencing shortages in numbers. Not quite understandable for 2 good size schools which usually produce respectable sport teams in all other sports.

  266. Rockland

good points Al. The Senior and travel experienced goalie for CN will definetely be beneficial for them.

in terms of the forwards, i would give the CN skaters the slight edge over the South, North Rockland and Pearl River skaters purely based on the fact that the CN skaters have played at a higher level of competition the past few years. But you’re right, it should be close games as South returns some pretty good Senior-level talent as well.

i would also have to give CN the edge in defense over these teams because of Brynes.

  267. conference 2

Mamaroneck top dawg White Plains followed by Sleepy EAst Tuck Bville and Scarsdale and Pelham
Pelham real young only two seniors

  268. HOCKEY MOM

LoHud Hockey…Green is still your color, huh??? The statement was and I quote “Having mom come on is a bit much.” I have not been on the blog for months until last night and weighed in on the discussion on the topic of HS/Juniors/the process. Of course I mention my son becasue it is through him that I have experienced the whole hockey thing. Please show me where I have ever initiated blogging to talk/brag/tout about him? When someone else has negative things that are completely inaccurate about him,...yes I chime in. So what??? I do not hide behind my identidy it doesn’t scare me to let you knowe who I am. You need to go back and re-read the post before mine last night and get your self straightened out but doubt it!

sec1fan…You mention three players and ask if I know them…yes personally and your “interpretation” of how you think the story went, is absolutely wrong. Nick was not done a favor…he asked for a release shortly after he came, which wasn’t even a full season. Anthony, he almost lost his chance to go to the USHL because of that program. Sean was a Royal and then an Applecore player and it was his talent and not that program. If you do not believe me, then please…take notice of the Junior teams this year and where the local players are and it is not Applecore! I heard they had barely 40 players tryout for the A team for the upcoming season and that speaks volumes! You tell me what you think about this situation: Junior coach tells his veteran players it means nothing that they are a veteran and they have to earn their place but his recruits don’t, that he will not contact college coaches for the player that they need to do it on their own, doesn’t go into a locker room between periods when his team is losing, and/or leaves the rink after a game when they do lose? To me…that is not a good coach nor one I want to have my son play for if he is looking to go to college to play hockey. Please, tell what you would think or give as an opinion of the program he coaches in?

And so not to upset those on getting off HS again…WP will return their strong forwards and defense, along with several strong players moving up from modified but goalie….could be a problem! GO TIGERS! You always seem to do us proud, one way or another!

BTW – there are still players I will follow…so sorry guys but you have to put up with me for a few more years and I with you!

  269. Al Bundy

I like hearing from Hockey Mom and the doings of her son in juniors program. This is great up close reporting of what needs to be done if you want to play in college, not D3 but D1. I hope he succeeds, but neverthless its an interesting story on the journey he has to take. Keep us more informed!

I like WP alot this year too. I think their skating core is the strongest in the HS division 1 for the section. They have a very good coaching staff and if they get a goalie they should be fine. There main competition, Suffern and Mamo, will also be experimenting with new goalies.

  270. LoHud Hockey

Not sure what you mean with your statement about green being my color, but if you are trying to imply that I am somehow jealous of you or your son for what he has accomplished, you couldn’t be further from the truth. My son is only 3 weeks old, so safe to say he won’t be playing high school hockey for quite some time.

I am happy for your son that he is pursuing his dream, and from the couple of short conversations I have had with him over the years he was playing for WP, I found him to be a pleasant kid, way more so than many of the HS hockey players I come in contact with. Nobody’s telling you to hide your identity, I was pointing out that people were saying things like “having mom come on is a bit much” because you are pointing out that you are his mother. If you were his brother instead of his mother and coming on here making the same exact posts while identifying yourself as his brother, people on here would have the exact same reaction, but they would be saying “Having his brother come on here is a bit much.”

My issue is not with your posts about your/Rui’s experiences, nor the WP hockey program, the EJHL, AJHL, USHL or anything else. It is that you got attacked on here and as a defense you decided to label everyone on this blog as a sexist by saying that you are being attacked because you are female.

“It is soooo typical & chauvanistic and so is the statement that as a Mom I have no right on here. Why is that….are you GUYS from the stone age?”

Your words, not mine. No one had said anything about you not being allowed on here because of your gender. Not every argument against a woman is driven by sexism. Sometimes people just don’t like what you say or how you present yourself. You have to learn to deal with that. My opinions of you, your actions on the blog, your actions in the stands at WP games, etc. are inconsequential and not the point of my statements. I am simply sticking up for myself and the rest of the people on this blog by pointing out that your accusations of sexism amongst the bloggers on this site were wildly inappropriate and inaccurate.

  271. HOCKEY MOM

    Thank you Al Bundy.

LoHud…Green because I speak from the expereince of him playing and not dreaming of playing! You seem to read into things what you want and state things like “no one”’ has ever said anything about my gender, that I am on here all the time talking about RUI. Are you kidding me or you just like to get me in an uproar and banter back? Oooh…I know, because you are a man! lol lol Unfortunately, it is the way of the world, even though we think we have come so far!

My point was if I disguised who I was and blogged, bashed, and/or praised behind a tag, no one would be the smarter. I choose to stick up for my son, players I follow, WP, and because I am a “Mom” (a woman) it gets you guys all in a huff because you think that I couldn’t possibly know what I am talking about. Maybe you need to go back and reread your last post to me and the others before and after my first post (which was the 1st one in months, contrary to what you stated!) Maybe then you can verify your inaccurate statements to me! Reread, think about it, be honest about it, and maybe you can finally see what I mean!

BTW – How I present myself on the blog….I have NEVER insulted anyone unless they were RUDE to me and have ALWAYS given credit where credit is due no matter who the player was or the team he played on! Not as sure I can say that about you “regulars!”

Have a nice day and hopefully you can muster up an apology after you go back and read some blogs but again…I doubt it!

  272. LoHud Hockey

I owe no apologies, so I’m not sure what you are looking for an apology on. Find me a post where someone says something about you not knowing what you are talking about because you are a woman, and I will reread it, but I don’t have the time to read through hundreds of comments to find something that isn’t there. As I said earlier, if someone accuses you of not knowing what you are talking about, that doesn’t mean they are saying it because you are a woman, maybe that person just felt that you didn’t know what you were talking about. When people come back with facts to support the opposite opinion to yours (like sec1 fan did), rather than accept that maybe they know what they are talking about, you decide to come back at tham saying that they are making stuff up.

People did make comments regarding your bias towards teams/programs your son has played for, and they are correct. Most people are going to be biased in that sense towards the team they or their friends/relatives play for. Again, this was brought up that you are his mom and it is hard for you to be impartial when talking about your son. Not because you are his mom, but because you are his parent. People are saying “mom” instead of “parent” because you specified that you are his mom.

As for the length of time since your previous post, it is August. The season ended 5 months ago. Aside from a handful of people, everyone’s last post was months ago. You are a pretty regular contributor on here during the season, which is what I meant by saying that you are on here just as much as the other regulars (me, Al Bundy, fanotgame, etc.).

And finally, to quote your last post *“I have NEVER insulted anyone unless they were RUDE to me”* well, I guess that’s where you & I differ. I haven’t insulted anyone on here even if they are rude to me. I am an adult, as are you, and I choose to act like one and have adult conversations with people. If someone makes a rude comment, insults me, says I don’t know what I am talking about, I answer them and explain my side as I am doing now. No need to sling a rude comment or insult back at them. That is childish and I leave that to the immature kids that come on here to try and stir the pot.

  273. to hockey mom

This has to end all you keep doing is accussing people of being sexist and you keep mentioning how Applecore is a bad program. Maybe if you put this much effort into your son maybe he’d be somewhere instead of going from team to team so you hate Applecore because things didn’t work out there and I guess Rui not being able to make any USHL teams is because of Applecore, so enough already just get off this blog and worry about your own son and I hope Rui doesn’t have your attitude of always accusing other people for nothing because that definetly won’t get him anywhere.

  274. to hockey mom

Also for my last comment take it as being RUDE or INSULTING but there also FACTS.

  275. clarkstown s

Myers and Jacobs will score as many points as any other Rockland teams top two forwards. However, lack of depth on defense and suspect goaltending will be Souths issues.

  276. sec1fan

    HMom,

I did’t notice anything rude in Lohud’s posts that would have warranted the “Green” comment in one of your posts. Judging from the obvious knowledge he/she (don’t want to make any assumptions about Lohud’s gender under the circumstances) has regarding hockey, why would you make such a derogatory comment? Considering the topic being connected to your son, I understand why its slightly heated for you. Keep in mind that you have chosen to engage in this fashion which invites comments that you may not want to hear. Just try to take the sensitivity(men can be sensitive too, so don’t read into the comment)out of the response.

Applecore did do Nick a favor. Its not uncommon (as you know) for player to ask for releases from Jr programs. I’ve known the Grasso’s since Nick was 8. I spoke to his Father during the season and understand the need for moving programs. As you are familiar with the release process, Applecore was not obliged to trade Nick at all or to any team in the EJHL. They helped him by sending him to a playoff bound team therefore assisting him in his quest for a D1 placement. Who cares that Escobedo was a Royal growing up. Almost all the junior programs are made up of players from other youth organizations. Anybody on the Hitmen that grew up playing in the Hitmen youth organization (trick question, there is no Hitmen youth hockey to speak of)? By the way, ALL the D1 players make it based on Talent. Of course he made it because of his God given talent. What the situation was surrounding Bitetto doesn’t matter either. He played at applecore and eventually landed with a D1 scholarship.

To answer your question on the Applecore coach, I find this information to be the most informative of your posts. Assuming what you said happen did, I’d be concerned about my son playing there. Doesn’t mean there isn’t a viable explanation that the Coach can present, but it is cause for concern. Where the program is going may be found in their performance this upcoming season. Applecore, none the less, has historically been one of the, if not the top program in the area.

Oh and by the way, I’m glad to hear about Rui’s progress. The more kids that make it to the higher levels of the hockey playing world, the better it is for all of the local players.

  277. Hockey Mom

“to hockey mom” – Your post is exactly the mentality I am talking about and proves my point…it’s what was already said almost verbatum and how this got started.
sec1fan & LoHud – I can’t even continue with you guys because you are not truthful and twist things and think what you say is right and I am wrong. Especially that I bring up Rui and that you haven’t blogged in months (hysterical). I posted in regards to the discussion of the HS/Juniors, and mentioned him because someone specifically asked about him. Anyone can go back and read, I did, and you have been blogging all along for months: May, June, July, and yes, now August, not I. Why do you state things like that when it is not true and twist things and try to make it look like I am wrong and you are right. If it is not sexiest…what is that then…?
Can we change the subject because the fiction and selective reading is out of control. I mean I can keep going but let’s not. Let’s change the subject? How about something like Lohud and his webaite. I do appreciate those things as well and thanks for that coverage. Also for the well wishes for Rui.

  278. LoHud Hockey

Who said I haven’t been on here posting all along? Certainly not me. You accuse me of selective reading, and it appears that you are exhibiting some selective reading yourself. A direct quote from my last post: “Aside from a handful of people, everyone’s last post was months ago.” I never said I stopped posting, I said that most people stop during the off-season. I personally am in that handful who’s last post is more recent than the end of last season.

If you would please enlighten me, tell me where I have not been truthful on here? I have been nothing but truthful on here. All I have been stating all along is that your posts have been elicited responses from people that were not to your liking, so you went on the offensive against those people, further escalating the situation. It becomes an argument in a public forum so it draws negative attention to yourself. I stayed quiet about it all along because frankly, I don’t care whether anyone on here is your friend or your enemy. I started commenting on it because I took issue with you claiming that everyone on this site is sexist, and when I did, you proved my point because you have now spent a couple of days and a bunch of posts attacking me.

And sec1 fan brought up a good point in his last point by saying he/she when referring to me. How do you know my gender? How do you know I am not also a woman? I am not saying I am or I am not, but how do you know? For that matter, how do you know sec1 fan, another person you have been accusing of being sexist, is not a woman. Remember, you have been pointing out all along that everyone but you is remaining anonymous on here, so you don’t know anyone’s gender but your own.

  279. HOCKEY MOM

lol lol yes it’s all me!

  280. to hockey mom

What point are you proving? Everything I said was truthful and tell me where in my post was I stating a lie. It seems everytime someone says something you don’t like you think its a lie or something, just tell me where in my post was I lying.

  281. Conference one

LoHud – CONGRATULATIONS on the new addition. Is 3 weeks too young for his first skates :)

  282. sec1fan

Lets make this simple, HMOM, you are WRONG, on several counts.

Saying things are twisted and not truthful doesn’t make it so. I’ve given you every opportunity to present a “fact” to prove your points.

You started with the Rockets and the Hitmen of the AJHL being better then any program in the EJ. Oh Boy, it took a while but you corrected that(after another poster pointed it out)by apologizing to the Bobcats for ever confusing them with the Hitmen. WHAT? I’ve already addressed this, WRONG AGAIN. After you qualified your Rocket/Bobcat assessment by limiting the comparison to around here, I pointed out to you that the Hitmen ARE from around here, you made no retraction.

Another statement you made was NO commitments for Applecore. WRONG AGAIN. I spelled them out for you in one post, again no retraction or explanation for why I was wrong (not possible as it was a statement of fact). I followed it up with additional very recent commitments that you should have been familiar with. Your response was basically that they don’t count. Why? Well one made it on Talent and he was previously a Royal. One was traded to a playoff team but that is no favor from applecore. Another almost didn’t go to the USHL because of Applecore. WHAT? They all played there, they count, lets just say WRONG AGAIN. Look, the correct response was; OOPs I forgot about those.

At one point you actually asked me what I based my statements on and suggested my arse. I presented facts with the actual names of the commited players. Did you respond with a single fact that proved any inaccuracy? No, not one.

You’re last post was the funniest. Lets change the subject but lohud/sec1fan you twisted the facts and you’re liars. Oh ok, you haven’t presented a single example of a “lie” but want to throw the stone and leave it at that. good one!

  283. sec1fan

Another interesting point regarding the sexist complaint:

Hmom referred to all you “men” when addressing the posters on this blog. Well there is no way of knowing who is male or female as lohud pointed out. Its clearly sexist to assume that all of her “attackers” are male. She is also clearly assuming that the blog is attended by just hockey dads or interested males. Is she also assuming that the absence of other hockey moms is due to their lack of hockey knowledge? I wonder what the logic is for the assumption that her opposition is male.

Sexist indeed. I have to admit that my wife pointed this out to me.

After my retirement from pissing all of you off, I decided to check back in to see how things were going.

Hockey Mom- You are a bumbling idiot, holy crap. I read through all this stuff and realized that you are a FOOL, an ignorant fool. Just please, please give up. sec1fan and Lohud hockey have made it clear to everyone who is reading this blog, who is right and who is wrong. LoHud Hockey- You’re still this blogs most reliable blogger, and intelligent, keep it up.

go pelham, rye sucks and keep an eye on Mamaroneck, they’ve been known to do illegal stuff.

  287. Al Bundy

    Is chivalry dead?

With all the low down, mean spirited, mis-informed posts I’ve seen on this blog, why is it that Hockeymom, only, extracts such retribution.

I’m a big fan of all hockeymoms. The sport would die without them. It’s apparent she is a big fan of her son, as all mothers should be, but not over the top. I don’t ever recall any over-exuberant posts on this fine players exploits, just some chronicles of his journeys into juniors, and geez, I confuse all the time the ajhl, ejhl,. ushl, nahl, junior C, B, A, tier 1 and 2 alphabet soup stuff too.

and Lohud Hockey, you have my greatest respect as the pre-eminent blogger on the site, but I would reject this guys compliment of you.

    Out for vacation…back in September.

  290. HOCKEY MOM

You guys are hysterical and the more you type and keep it up, the more you prove my points….especially the sec 1 fans! You can think that you are right and point out your “facts” if it makes you feel better. It doesn’t bother me but it obviusly bothers you and you need to hear that you are right. So… you are right and I am wrong. There, does that make it all better? and you say you’re not men, yeah right! LingMAO lol lol lol!

Al Bundy, a true gentleman (going by your tag), again, thank you for your support, and have a nice vacation.

  291. sec1fan

Ah, thank you Hmom, all is good in the universe (I’ll admitt I’m a man). Sorry I was a little harsh.

There are some great websites that list all the collegiate commitments by school. What year they’re committed for and what league/HS/Prep school they came from. There is one for D1 and one for D3. Its in a spreadsheet format so its easy to read. Its alot easier then going by the team webites. They cover every collegiate division. Its helpful when you’re going through the process. You can track what players have made it where. You can use this to make comparisons to your own situation. It can assist in assessing where your son might fit in. By indentifying players from the same league with similiar statistics, you can identify those teams that you should consider contacting. Not an exact science but for forwards the statistics can be used as a bench mark. It also lets you know what leagues are putting out collegiate players directly from those leagues.

If you don’t already know it, say so on this blog and I’ll get you the links. Unfortunately for me, that site will provide all the ammunition for catching my mistakes.

I enjoy your posts on the blog and hope you continue to do so. Just bare with me when I’m in the mood to bust chops.

  293. ranger fan

sec1fan, u must be retarded because ryes gona destroy pelham- reilly is going to be their best player which is pathetic and rye is going to have 3 solid lines and a good goalie

  294. rye?

Rye was supposed to be better last year too I believe Pelham will be down but they always find a way

  295. sec1fan not to be confused with sec 1fan

    or sec1 fan

  296. sec1fan

Sorry but I had to post this:

Long Beach, NY – The New York Apple Core is proud to announce that defenseman Anthony Bitetto has accepted his scholarship offer and committed to Northeastern University for 2010.

Anthony played his entire youth and junior career with Apple Core until this year when he was sent to the Indiana Ice of the USHL at the trade deadline to prolong his season. Anthony played a critical role in Indiana’s Clark Cup 2009 Championship.

“I want to thank my parents, Coach Cosentino and everyone else at Apple Core for everything they have done for me over the past 14 years,” said Anthony Bitetto. “Apple Core will always be home for me and I am thankful for the opportunity.”

  297. Truth

To respond to rye?’s question, it was Pelham who was supposed to be the team to beat last year in D2, with all their seniors and an improved transfer goalie. They couldn’t beat Rye until sectionals, and even then they just squeaked by. Rye will look to erase that memory this year.

  298. fanotgame

Rye should be the DII favorite by the end of the season. They are loaded. The players all seem pretty focused. How fast they come out of the chute will depend somewhat on how successful the Garnet football team is moving up to class A. If they get to the state finals (like they have for 4 of last 5 seasons), Rye won’t see their new goalie or a few other important players until the 5th game of the hockey season.

But, I expect good competition from SNS (decent depth at all positions), SHI (especially if their young goalie matures during the season)and as always, Pelham. Never underestimate a hungry group of Pelican skaters with Witz behind the bench.

  299. agree with assessment

    Agree with your post Fanotgame,
Rye should be the class of the D 2 group. Rye has good depth and strong players. My feeling on Pelham is that over the years no matter how strong the individual players are or how weak or young they are they come up with a team oriented style of play and play all their opponents tough. Talking to people there it looks like they are very young although they always get forced into playing many underclassmen anyway. The seniors are not neccessarily the most talented and they only have a few returners who contributed last season. It may be a rebuilding season. The schedule is supposedly very challenging and that will impact where they get seeded in the sectionals. They do have five scrimmages scheduled so that will help too

  300. Next Year

Post comments on who you this are the top 5 teams next year.

top 10 teams of SEC1 and CHSHL combined.

list reasoning behind your rankings .

  301. quakes

    Mamaroneck
    Suffern
    Rye
    Iona
    White Plains
    Pelham
    Mahopac
    Fordham
    New Rochelle
    Lakeland Panas

  302. no way

no way suffern is better than rye, give me a break, mamaroneck and rye are very close, but suffern is a step down from the two

  303. Suffern is

Suffern is ALWAYS better than Rye
why would this year be any different

  304. no way

    not this year

  305. fanotgame

I hope the Garnets and Mounties get a chance to play each other this year. I view this season’s Garnet team as a lot like the one two years ago that tied the admittedly loaded Mounties up at SOR (Suffern comes from behind late to even the score)and then lost on a late, flukey goal (Rye defender gets his cage hooked with another Mountie skater)at Playland.

  306. fanotgame

quakes- Your’s are close to mine. Pelham a little bit too high and L/P too low. Also, SNS, SHI and Stepinac about the same as New Ro.

Iona- top to bottom, Gaels have the best skaters. Need to avoid underperforming.

Mamo- depth as usual. Will miss Glaser in goal

Rye- very deep with skaters this season (all 15 who will play have A,AA or AAA travel experience). Big, agile goaltender who has played AAA travel.

Suffern- Always puts out a quality product. Norwin will keep them in every game. Jaeger will score some.

WP- very good D will protect the LAX goalie. Can the returning forwards light it up without big bodies McCarrick and Altieri creating space for them?

L/P- pretty decent skating talent and a young but feisty goalie.

Fordham- Good junior goalie duo that have alternated since freshmen year. Talented defenseman Brown and forward Masullo. Maybe some depth issues?

Pac- Fatone a pretty good goalie and Mastracola can do damage. I am sure there are others who can chip in.

SNS- This is an intertesting team. No one stands out, but they seem to have a decent goalie and a fair amount of solid performers.

Pelham- although obviously a rebuilding year, they will still be a tough out with Witz behind the bench

SHI- Older Pesce a real talent. Younger one also pretty good. Some support players. How far can they go with a freshman goalie?

New Ro- Prunesti and Mfoula (can play FWD and D) both very good players. Goalie solid. Umbro just a frosh, but a pretty good one.

Stepinac- Not as bad as everyone thinks. Good young goalie a year older. Rocco still around. Reagan a top D man. A few other good support players. Obvious depth issues (what else is new?).

  307. hockey4fun

When we look at the Junior players the “bloggers” and readers have mentioned, some assume that the best area talent is chosen for those teams. Think again. Some choices are purely political. The players are good but not, in a few cases, the best.
Let me not digress- this blog is HIGH (not Junior) sticking it. Let’s enjoy our sons and daughters HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY experience and applaud those that have demonstrated talent and those unrecognized but talented as well as those players that support the aforementioned.

  308. to hockey4fun

I agree what with you are saying but we can talk about both especially about juniors now and before high school season starts so don’t be one of those parents whose kids don’t play juniors or aren’t good enough to make a program and just want to focus on high school blogging

  309. hockey4fun

Ok- that’s fair. Enjoy! (And I’m not “one of those parents”, I am on the inside, with a quite “good enough” player.)

  310. ny hockey

heard from a friend on etb there starting goalie from last year wont be back for some reason

  311. Bircks

    Fanotgame

A while back you said SNS has a solid goalie. Does anyone know who he is?
