High (School) sticking

Ice hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley with Harold Gutmann

Thank you

August
5

It seems like this will be the last news I break on the High School Sticking blog: After seven years at The Journal News, today was my last day.

In that time, I’ve been the beat writer for 10 high school sports (hockey, Rockland football, Rockland boys basketball, boys lacrosse, girls lacrosse, indoor track, outdoor track, boys tennis, girls tennis and my first-ever beat, bowling). And I can honestly say that hockey had the most passionate and knowledgeable fans out there.

I’ve been told that I didn’t pick the best time to enter the newspaper business. But I couldn’t think of a more exciting time. Just think of all the innovations we’ve had in the past few years — a database of player stats and team records, a studio show, streaming games, and of course the High School Sticking blog.

I would like to thank everyone out there for all your contributions. The information was invaluable, the criticism made me a better reporter, and some of the jokes made my day. And there is no denying the reach that this blog has. Look at the user locations from one day in February (a month where the blog received almost 43,000 visitors and more than 156,000 hits): Waterloo, Ontario; Waynesville, Missouri; Key Biscayne, Florida; Columbus, Ohio; Saugus, Massachusetts; Harvey, Illinois; Silver Spring, Maryland; Ollie, Iowa; Upperville, Virginia; and in New York: All five boroughs, Baldwin, Canton, Watertown, Ithaca and Massena.

That said, sometimes it crossed the line. We’re talking about teenagers, and words can hurt. I got this e-mail last season from a friend of a player who was the subject of some critical comments: XXXX can’t sleep.  I don’t care if you shut down the blog, make them disappear. I don’t know who will take over the hockey beat, but whoever it is, I urge them to use the delete key more often and keep a positive tone.

I would like to thank the hockey community — parents, alumni, students, officials, scorers — who were gracious and helpful every step of the way. A special thanks to John Orlando, the most responsive and informed Section 1 coordinator I’ve ever dealt with. And, finally, thank you to the players and coaches. You talked to me after devastating defeats, you welcomed me into locker rooms and practices, and most of all, you gave me some incredible moments I’ll never forget.

Good Luck, and thanks for watching my son play and for being fair.

  2. Na Na Na Na, Hey Hey Hey, Goodbye

No big front cover story with a comment from a 17 year old uninvolved in a big story Gutless?

    One hit wonder I suppose…

  3. Westchester Hockey

    Harold

Sorry to see you leave the Lohud hockey scene. We met you a few times and you were always friendly and fair to our son’s school. Best of luck in all of your future endeavors.

  4. john orlando

We have had many fine reporters cover hockey over the years but Harold brought high school hockey to new heights. He will be sorely missed. I have talked to Harold many times over the past few years and much of the conversations were off the record. I can honestly say that Harold never broke the trust and the information given to him only made hockey better because he gave his heart and soul to our beloved sport.

THANK YOU HAROLD, YOU WILL BE SORELY MISSED.

    GOOD LUCK IN NC.

  5. And This One Will Last A Lifetime

    Good Luck Harold.

You were always very good to my kids, and a very good reporter/journalist for our wonderful sport.

  6. Al Bundy

Thank you. You’re a bright young man and good luck in your future endeavors.

  7. LoHud Hockey

Thank you Harold for everything you have done over the last couple of years for local high school hockey. I’m not sure if you were spearheading it or just the face they put on it, but you will get the credit in my book for being the person who brought us the live streaming games on the Internet, the live studio show where we can see the players & coaches being interviewed and much more. When Dan Kiernan left the Journal News, I think everyone was a little worried that with him went the coverage that our favorite sport was finally beginning to recieve, but they gave us you, and we are all thankful for it.

To the folks at the Journal News/lohud.com, please give us a beat reporter who cares as much about HS hockey (that very often gets treated like the red-headed stepchild of the sports section) as Harold so we can keep what little exposure we have going. And please keep this forum alive for us to express our comments/concerns as this is our only outlet to do so (at least until I figure out how to get a message board up on http://www.section1hockey.com).

Good luck to you Harold, and I hope that you do check in on us every once in a while as a fan and if you are sticking around the area, hopefully we’ll get to see you at a game here and there.

  8. fanotgame

Good luck Harold. Your innovation, sense of fair play and insight were greatly appreciated. Though you will no longer host “high school sticking”, we hope you stay in touch this coming season with a few posts.

  9. ACHA

Good luck Harold, you will be rewarded for your hard work, I can’t imagine too many people walking into a job interview with the experience and ability to stream, and cover live events, with your skill set, you will be fine.

  10. Rockland

I agree with all your points LoHud.

Harold, you will be very, very missed. You have gone above and beyond these past couple years, eveything from improving the blog, to developing live video chats, etc. All those imrpovements were made beacuse you were a great reporter. Every time there was breaking news to report, you were right on top of it.

I hope you will check in and maybe post your thoughts/predictions from time to time during the season, or stop by a game if you have the time. The next beat writer for hockey has major shoes to fill.

Best of luck in all your future endeavors.

  11. ACHA

I hate it as well when kids get bashed on the blog, maybe its inevitable (spell check). It doesn’t bother me when someone says “oh he wasn’t playing well tonight”, but I don’t like it when someone says “he is a horrible player”.

So while, there may be not much we can do about those comments, I hope the kids just remember the wise old saying that “you know you made it once you start to get critisized” something like that right?

  12. sec1fan

    Harold

Don’t know you personally but you certainly did a great job. The streaming and live studio was a big upgrade for HS Hockey coverage.

Feel free to drop a line on the blog. We know you’ll be reading all the entertaining banter you can’t get anywhere else.

  13. sec1 fan

Dan Kiernan had nothing on Harold Gutmann. We’re sorry to see you go.

  14. Conference one

Best of luck to you Harold…..

  15. Seth

Great job, Harold. See you when I see you.

  16. CN

    Harold,

You were great this year and hopefully once this
commie rag called the journal news gets it act in line they’ll hire you as the sports editior.

  17. Support the Journal News

It is sad that we again lose another talented writer devoted to covering High School Hockey.

We who blog need to subscribe to the Journal News to ensure that this resources remains here for us. I’m not connected to the Journal Neews in any way – just a reader. We see already that the writers have had to take unpaid furloughs in order to keep their jobs.

Many newspapers are now going to charge for online content beginning with those owned by News Corp. They charge for the Wall Street Journal and are now planning on charging for the NY Post Online.

  18. Looking ahead for Rye

Rye starts the season playing Queensbury and Glen Falls over the Thanksgiving weekend. Rye may face Queensbury again the weekend before Christmas as Queensbury joins Rye at the Rome Free Academy Christmas Tournament. Still looking for the 4th team.

Looking at Queensbury’s schedule its interesting to note that while Queensbury is restricted to 20 games like everyone else, they have schedule 5 Scrimmage games as the motion to limit the number of scrimmages to 2 was NOT adopted by NY State.

I would certainly love to see Rye schedule “Scrimmage Games” against some of teams missing from its schedule – Suffern, White Plain, Inoa Prep, etc.

  19. Looking ahead to being inconsiderate

Looking ahead for Rye… Thank you for taking the time to post and show how truly self absorbed some people can people. A man who had been dedicated to helping highlight high school hockey and providing great coverage to school and kids like.. RYE, posted on his own blog that he has lost his job. Maybe, just maybe you could take a moment to thank him rather than change the topic on a blog that he in fact sorry.

O wait, sorry, that would you require you to spend more 30 seconds thinking of somebody other than yourself.

  20. Looking Ahead

    To Inconsiderate,

I have enjoyed the writing of Dan K and certainly loved the work of Harold.

I had already wrote a praising Harold under another name – Supporting the Journal News.

Some people change their name to address the topic just as you did. You can now remove the stick you have misplaced in your body.

  21. Rodney King

Can’t we all just get along?

Here is what we all know but may not say:

    1. We all enjoyed and appreciated Harold’s writing and his blog entries.

    2. We are probably on our own for quite awhile – which may have been what Looking Ahead was thinking. If the Journal News continues the way it has been going, don’t expect them to immediately assign someone to begin blogging on a column for a Winter sport. If we even see a writer assigned to High School Ice Hockey don’t expect to see another blog entry until mid-October at the earliest. Many newspaper just ask the local high school to have one of their students email in a story of their games. Hopefully we will get a full-time writer.

Ease up on the hating – we are in this thing together.

Remember – no negative comments about children who happen to play HS hockey.

When writing – keep in mind the classy examples of blogging that Fanotgame and Lohud set for us all.

Here’s a new topic – who are the captains for all of the Hockey teams? Has your school announced the Hockey captains for the upcoming season and do your school have unoffical strength and conditioning programs for hockey

  22. blog

harold, thanks for everything, you have been great. i think if he didnt mind, it would be a good idea to let LoHud Hockey run this blog (i know he isnt employed by the JN), or if he started up his own blog on his site or on another blog-specific site that could be linked from his page. He is very well informed and i dont think anyone could fill Harold’s shoes better than him. Again Harold, thank you, and sorry.

  23. Good Topic Rodney

I would bet that the more succesful programs have off season or pre season conditioning, or plans to keep the kids skating off season

Like wise, the worst performing programs probably only get together November 1, first day of official practice, and after the last game of the season never here from the coach untill next season. Unfortunately my son plays for one of these programs.

  24. stick removed

Good Topic Rodney… which program might that be… it would be interesting to know what teams are doing what. I have heard of a few teams that will be playing fall hockey and have fall training.

  25. Good Topic Rodney

I can’t give to much away. One thing the coach does during off season is read the blog..and he’s vindictive. Doesn’t want to jeopardize the nice stipend he gets for 3 months work. One hint..you can usually expect this team to have the among the worst record in the section. That’ll narrow it down to a few teams.

Final thought..the kids carry the attitude of the coach. If he’s not putting the off season effort, there attitude will be the same.

  26. mike meglio

    Harold,

over the past couple of years i have grown not only as a human but as a blogger myself. I can only thank you for helping me mature into the blogger i am today. god bless harold i love you

  27. Looking ahead to being inconsiderate

Good Topic Rodney… if the coach is on the blog a lot, which I find hard to believe and he is vindictive the later should comment should have him removed. If they are consistently a poor team with poor behavior and poor preparation then that should do him in.

The kids do tend to carry the attitude the coach and we can only hope that coaches are teaching the right lessons.

Im trying to narrow it down. League 1 has only had two teams that struggled this year and one had been a top team for years. League 2 was well balanced from what it seems, League 3 the same and one team got much better. You got me. But hope the seasons and experience turns around for the team

  28. CoachChap

Harold, I.ve been coaching 30 years, you have done the best job covering ice hockey for section 1, thanks for all our conversations and your great reporting of what really happened in the game for the players of section one. we will all miss you especially section hockey family of which ypou had become an interval part of our family, best of luck, keep your cell so I can still reach you. Tough question who will try and replace you? Coach Chap Mamaroneck

  29. fanotgame

I think any off season conditioning programs would need to be led by captains. Unlikely the coaches could be involved before the first week of November.

  30. Not South of the Canadian Border

Harold you have helped further the game of Hockey on many fronts. You were not only fair but you were talented in your approach but with the correct mind set as these players are just kids. I hope you wind up in a better place and I am sure whatever you will be doing will be done with the same level of poise and class.
The person following you will have heavy shoes to fill.
    Good Luck in your future.

  31. Profesor

Best of luck to you Harold! But does anyone know where Harold’s going? Is he going to a another newspaper or he’s going to write a book about the Hockey Blogging. If anyone knows, please let us know. Again….Best of Luck to you !

  32. yo..

    ayo meglio… chill wit datt

  33. Taylor

Harold, sorry to see you go. You did a great job with this blog. You made following Sec1 and CHSHL hockey fun. Best of luck in whatever you do next.

  34. LoHud Hockey

This doesn’t seem to be promising in our hopes to get a new beat reporter that will be dedicated to ice hockey and spend a lot of time covering it, blogging, etc.:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/13/business/media/13gannett.html?_r=1

  35. fanotgame

maybe we need to move the blog to your website.

  36. LoHud Hockey

I’ve thought about it. Nothing in the works as of right now, though.

  37. New Blog - Section 1 Hockey Blog

    Welcome to Section 1 Hockey’s newest blog. ( http://section1hockey.blogspot.com/ )

It is rather unfortunate that Harold will no longer be able to provide us with the excellent high school hockey coverage that he has over the years. With Harold’s departure from the local newspaper we have also lost the forum that we have had to discuss and report from a personal level on Section 1 Hockey.

Please join me in shifting your comments and your blogging to this new blog.

The blog is meant to be a positive experience and forum. We understand that some topics and rivalries will come up and we hope that everybody will operate within the parameter of respect and decency.

This blog will not be monitored daily; however, we will check it often and should a topic arise that you would like see covered, let us know at section1hockey@gmail.com

  38. peace

harold i hate you thank god your gone

  39. why

Now why say that about a man that did nothing but great things coverage and exposure wise for hockey in the area. Did he cover your team, your kid, or you as a player with something that you didnt like. I think you will miss him when we dont get decent coverage in the paper or online. Or you can simply stick to immature nature of your post and behavior.

  40. ohh yeahh

to lohud hockey….http://www.proboards.com/ for a message board

  41. Taylor

‘peace’ – Who are you? I really dare you to reveal your identity.

  42. N-4 CER

    Harold,

The ref community will miss you in the time box waiting for goals and penalty calls. You made HS hockey fun and interesting. Good luck to you. It seems like the JN deserves an unsportsmanlike for this.

  43. New Board

Thank you for all of the emails and posting to:

http://www.section1hockey.blogspot.com . The new board is up and running and off to a great start!!!!

  44. LoHud Hockey

Not sure how many people are still on here (lately we are lucky to get one post per week), but for those of you that are still around waiting for someone to speak, I just read this article online and thought it was good (and appropriate for this blog), so I figured I would share:

    http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/story/779880.html

  45. high school

Great article Lohud. Its getting worse and worse unfortunately. There were a few of these type incidents this year too. Most parents are good and no problem. Others are not. The ones who complain look to put the blame on the coach instead of looking at their kids flaws. When the kid gets into the job market is Mom going to the CEO about his raise?

  46. Conference one

Good article LoHud. The blog has really dried up. Not sure why, Journal News still employing their servers. Everyone can post away….... I guess Harald was the straw that stirred the drink !!!

  47. section 1 blog

Most people seem to have shifted to the new blog.

    http://section1hockey.blogspot.com/

    come on over!

  48. fanotgame

I’ll continue to post here, for now. Lets hope the JN gets someone to write articles on this blog sometime soon. Less than 7 weeks till the start of HS hockey.

Now that HS is back in session and potential rosters are a bit clearer, listed below are my latest thoughts on the local top 15 (which on any given day could give one another a good match). I don’t see a dominant team separated from the rest. A fair amount of parity, on paper at least.

    1. WP- saw Conner Lawrence is playing local jrs, so maybe back from prep. If so, WP has 4 very good HS D men to protect an inexperienced goalie. Also scoring up front.

    2. Mamaroneck- Lots of depth, as always. Could miss Glaser in goal big time.

3.Rye- The prep goalie is back. Lots of skating depth. Will probably skate 3 FWD lines and 5 D and try to wear down opponents who play a shorter bench. Focused roster and coach looking for a deep DII run.

4.Iona- Lots of depth, although lost Lynett to prep. Have they firmed up the goaltending?

    5. Suffern- Always lurking. Not many seniors, but some juniors (including Jaeger) and sophs will surely step up to support the efforts of Norwin and Fuchs.

    6. L/P- Some top line skaters and depth to go with the young feisty goalie.

    7. Fordham- No CHSHL bashing here- solid goaltending and good forward talent. Maybe a little light on defense after Brown, unless they move someone back.

    8. RCDS- They can recruit and have their own rink for practice every day. Play a tougher schedule than most Sec One teams.

    9. Harvey- See above, except I don’t think the Caviliers play as tough a schedule as the Wildcats.

    10. Stepinac- Better than people think. They have some good players who are used to eating up lots of ice time.

    11. Pac- Mastracola very good. Indians have a good HS goalie. Other solid skaters to work with. Coach one of the better ones.

    12. SHI- Older Pesce very good. Don’t know much about the younger one. A few other solid travel players. Their season may very well depend on the development of the freshman goalie.

    13. SNS- Lots of role players, some of which need to step up now that JoJo is gone. Experienced goalie always a good thing.

    14. Pelham- Like Suffern, always lurking, even in a rebuilding year. Look for the young Pelicans to take their lumps early in the season but be a tough out come playoff time.

    15. New Ro- Good HS goalie, Prunesti very good and other travel talent.

    League predictions:

Conference One: L/P, Pac, Brewster, Ossining, Pawling, Yorktown, Carmel, KPV

Conference Two: WP, Mamo, SHI, Pelham, New Ro, ETB, Scarsdale

Conference Three: Rye, SNS, Byram Hills, RTH, PWBV, Jay, Fox Lane, Greeley

Conference Four: Suffern, North, Pearl River, South, North Roc, NTZ

    CHSHL Locals: Iona, Fordham, Stepinac

Don’t know how they plan to seed for Sec One playoffs, but I am assuming it is off conference records (so, for eg, no one who finishes second in a conference can be seeded higher than anyone who finished first in another conference). Maybe they power rank the conferences, so a second place finisher in a strong conference is seeded higher than a second place finisher in a weaker conference. If it works that way, I have DI Frozen Four as WP, Suffern, L/P, Mamo and the DII Frozen Four as Rye, Pelham, SHI, Byram Hills.

If they seed with the rule I described above, the winner of the Pelham/SHI league standings is a likely 3 while the loser could drop all the way to 7. I still think the loser of SHI/Pelham seeding battle could beat the likey two seed SNS (who has a very good chance to finish second in Conference Three).

  49. Not Bad

    Not bad fan of game,

A couple of corrections, but not many,

SNS experienced goaltending? Gorman just graduated,

Prunesti and the younger Pesce have the potential to be the 1 and 2 best players in the whole section, but they may not play HS hockey as Pru is playing on the Applecore J. B Empire team, and Pesce is playing for the MIdget AAA Avalance.

I heard seeding is being done on strength of schedule this year. Certain wins will be worth more, and certain losses less. For instance a loss against Mamo wont hurt as much as a loss against a weak team.

  50. fanotgame

I thought SNS has Tabachnick who played about 40% of the time with same stats as Gorman last season. He is a travel goalie up at Brewster U18AA, right? My guess is that a lot of HS coaches would like to have him.

So, is the younger Pesce a defenseman? Lohud’s stats and roster seems to indicate that. If so, is he comparable to WP’s Mcgee and Suffern’s Norwin?

  51. Not Bad

Oh, I forgot about Tabachnick, I just remember Gorman reading how Gorman played the whole senior game.

The younger Pesce is only going to be a sophmore, some would say he was the best player on SH/I last year. He is playing in the same league McGee played in last year as far as travel goes. McGee played for the midget AAA gulls, and Pesce is going to play for the midget AAA Avalanche. All 2 of those players are very different, I don’t think you can compare. I would say McGee is the rawest of them, does what his talent allows him to do, is more of a puck rusher. Norwin is more of your matchup defensemen, he can do it all but may flourish taking on the oppositions best, Pesce is more of a puck mover, terrific transition game. But yeah, at this point going into the season, if you had to draft a defensemen, and you had your pick of the 3, I don’t know if one is better than the other, it would be based on what type of team you had…McGee is perfect for White Plains, because all those big horses open up space for him like a running back. Norwin is perfect for Suffern’s counterattack style, and Pesce is perfect for SH/Is game whose strength is transition from defense to offense.

  52. fanotgame

Last season, then freshman Pesce was better than then senior Halpin (now Apple Core Jr B). Pretty impresssive.

  53. Not Bad

    Similiar players, different roles.

I saw 3 SHI games last year, I watched them tie WP 2-2 (a game they should have won if their coach didn’t bench Halpin and Pesce in the first period for missing a game to play travel) I also saw them beat Pawling 5-3 and Lakeland 4-0,

Halpin seemed to be the big play guy, scoring 2 when they needed it against Pawling. Little Pesce was just so smooth and 6’2, no one in the stands believed he was a freshman. In the Lakeland game, as soon as SHI took the lead the 2 played together and just seemed to play keep away the whole game, I think SHI badly out shot Lakeland just because they never had the puck, the 2 D just held on to it and as soon as one got pressured, they would just pass it to the other. I don’t know if they will be able to play like that this year, but doesn’t Halpin have a little brother that plays D must be in High school by now.

  54. good local hockey

westchester mariners midget major u18 versus brewster midget major u18, 12:15, saturday, 9/19, playland

good chance to see what guberti was able to pull together…and to see who’s playing for brewster

  55. Al Bundy

I’m sure the Mariners have put together a good team, but at the midget major level so many of the best area talent is playing juniors (of which there are to many teams also) that the 18 U mdiget level is less appealing. Look at how few 18U tier 1 teams are in the Atlantic League.

Youth Hockey peaks at the 16U level, just before the kids disperse.

Don’t get me wrong, 18 U is still good hockey, but with prep and junior defections you can feel the watering down.

  56. Get Real

Applecore Junior B is a WASTE! It’s really a high level midget team. Basically what I’m saying is that playing Junior B is not impreesive at all. It’s just a waste of your time!

  57. Not Bad

I half agree with you Get Real, I’m not to fond of the Apple core program, I’m glad to see the Brewster team only lost by a goal to them last week, because everyone was making fun of that brewster team saying how young they would be….watch what is going to happen now, just like what happened with that kid who plays for Hobart now Cicola (Is that his name?) The young kids from Brewster are going to go to applecore next year and make the Junior A team over some of the loyal kids from the Applecore Junior B team now.

  58. ip news

    lynett transferred to canterbury

let’s see which team he makes

  59. Hockey Mom

fanotgame….Connor is back for WP! Yeah…we missed you Connor! As you said…should help having another good dman with an inexperienced goalie.
On another note…the new blog just doesn’t have the appeal or “look” as compared to this one. Anyway of “jazzing” it up any?

  60. CL Back..

If so, White Plains is the section favorite if they get decent goaltending. I remember this kid being really good.

The other favored teams, Suffern and Mamaroneck, will also be trying new goalies, who aren’t proven as good as the goalies they’ll be replacing.

  61. Get Real

Never heard of this player “CONNOR”. Did he play travel for anyone in our area?

  62. fanotgame

Brewster juniors this season. Probably played Westchester Express before going to prep (Salisbury I think) last season. Those CT prep players usually do a split season at Mid Fairfield, CT Wolves, ect. before the prep season.

  63. CL Back..

A couple years back there was a false controversy over White Plains using a Varsity player in a modified game to beat the Suffern modified. If I remember correctly this was the kid.

However, it was the opposite scenario he was promoted from modified as an 8th grader to varsity. I’ll accept “fact checkers” on this one.

  64. Get Real

Very familiar with Brewster, if he played he was 3 or 4th line (if that!). Did he play in Prep School and for what Prep school?

You got players around here that have made a name for themselves playing travel like Belger, Pesce, Cambria,Fusco Miano, Hagen, Cinotti, etc…..BUT never, Ever heard of Connor!

How long ago did he play for White Plains. Last year you had Alteri and McCarrick, the year before that you had Sigona and Rui and the year before that you had Pavarini and Conroy….................No Connor, how can he be missed if he didn’t PLAY! I think someone is Blowing Smoke!

  65. CL Back..

I haven’t see him play since 8th grade either..

He was very, very good for an 8th grader and of course this doesn’t always translate into great high school aged player. Let’s not confuse this with Willows coming back to Clarkstown.

Rather it’s probably just adding another good player to an already good White Plains base.

With Suffern and Mamaroneck also auditioning new goalies, White Plains should be considered one of the favorites for the large school section title.

  66. Not Bad

Don’t put too much pressure on the WP goalie, th suffern goalie has been playing since he’s 5 and seems to be a typical Suffern goalie (stops what hes supposed to until hes good enough to stop what hes not supposed to), I don’t know much about the new Mamo goalie, but again I think he has years of experience. The last I heard from someone close to the WP situation was that they were converting a lacrosse goalie into a hockey one.

  67. Another One!

First you have the Prep School drop out for Rye and now you have another Prep School drop out for White Plains. Don’t know much about the W.Plains kid but the Rye player never played!

  68. fanotgame

Not playing at prep varsity is not unusual. The Founders league teams usually have a few NHL draft picks each year. It took Pelham’s Reycroft (a regular on the ice as an 8th grader for the Pelicans) until his senior year to find ice time at Taft varsity. Go to a U18AAA Mid Fairfield tryout to see how the Section’s best would match up against the prep kids.

The WP kid’s name is Conner Lawrence. He played as a 9th grader on the team Rui was a senior on. Pretty good defenseman even back then. As a current Brewster junior B Dman, Lawrence will likely be one of the top 5 dmen in the Section. I would put him ahead of Byrnes, but behind McGee and Norwin. About the same as Christiansen. Regarding the Rye goalie, he too has played several years of travel at Mid Fairfield. With Scarsdale’s Gluck and Pawling’s DeLaverne (who is currently injured) both at Brewster Jrs and maybe not a big part of the HS scene this year, Rye’s Rix has a real shot to be one of the top goalies in the Section.

  69. Not Bad

wouldn’t read too much into kids coming back from prep.

could be money, not making the team, home sick, anything.

Pearl Rivers Surace was one of the top players 2 years ago, went to Canterbury and played JV, hopefully he makes the varsity this year.

Founders league JV teams would beat almost all the sections varsity teams

  70. fanotgame

And Canterbury is no Salisbury or Avon Old Farms when it comes to hockey.

  71. Not Bad

It used to be, actually Salisbury and Canterbury were in opposite positions about 20 years ago, then sometime in the 90s Salisbury moved to Division 1 and built a new rink…Canterbury will be up again I’m sure…....Anyway just to show how tough it is to play college hockey, another Pearl River player Paul Doran was a star on Canterbury’s Varsity for 2 years, last year he was a sophmore at the U of Rhode Island and only dressed for a little more than half the games.

  72. chshlnews

    fun fact

gilroy, as well all know, the bu walk-on who captained last year’s championship team who will also most likely make the Rangers roster for this season, went to st. mary’s in manhasset, helping them win 2 nysclub championships

st. mary’s just joined chshl, making the a division pretty much a power league

For those of you that are still here reading the blog, I am hoping some of you can help. I am trying to get the logo for all 29 teams for the website and have many of them, but there are still a few I am missing (or don’t have good versions of). If any of you are players, parents, or fans of the teams listed below and have a copy of the logo on a jersey, t-shirtor anything else and can scan or take a picture of it, please email a copy to me at info@section1hockey.com. The teams I need are:

Get Real, why don’t you relax. He played in 07 – 08. Sometimes you need to believe what bloggers write. I am not a fan of WP and could care less about their players but you must be pretty angry to go look up a roster from three years ago to prove your point

  76. fanotgame

Get real. Looking at your posted roster, that was a pretty good WP team. Lots of big names. They finished behind only Rye (state semi finalist) in League Two that year. Conner Lawrence would have been an 8th grader back then. As some suggest, maybe he played a game or two as an 8th grader, or as you contend, maybe not. He did play D for WP his freshamn year, and did it well. He is a solid HS player who is also doing a nice job for Brewster jrs so far this season. If he avoids jrs conflicts, we will hear his name a few times this coming season.

  77. Not South of the Canadian Border

St. Mary’s recruited the best hockey players on Long Island and near to it for the last 10 years playing a prep schedule.
Coached by Henry L of Applecore it was shooting fish in a barrel for them as they approached the best playing Junior A. Now they will not be able to recruit but will still be advantaged by the Hockey talent that is currently rostered and by the reputation and unofficial recruitment. However that will erode when the parents of future talent like of a Gilroy ability figure out that the competition is not what it once was and scouts no longer are looking. Hockey requires parody or it becomes a bore.
The parents of the talented player will then be forced to traditional hockey prep schools. St. Marys 13K a year vs some preps in the 60K per year range.
Let talk about Gilroy…..He is one in a billion with a god given talent just amazing hands and head with the size and ability to play NHL. You have to look at St. Marys during those years as Prep Hockey with the cream of the crop. They may dominate for a few years but sooner or later they will be like all the rest of the CHSHL teams up and down year to year with players who will retire or play club hockey. Once the talent is no longer getting scouts to show up at games the best players simply won’t go to St. Mary’s.

  78. Al Bundy

    Not South…

What are you trying to say about St. Mary’s and the CHSHL this year. Is their team entered into the CHSHL the Varsity “A” team or a second varsity “B” team?

  79. why not support the new blog

Okay, explain this to me…. why are we not supporting the new blog as much and still posting here. We asked for a new forum to be created and a group of people put it together. We have complained about the paper’s coverage of hockey, our hockey reporter has been fired and the blog hasnt been updated since then. Yet, rather than support the new blog people continue to post here… so many people have moved to the new blog. I think we should continue to support the new blog.

  80. LoHud Hockey

I can’t speak for everyone, but I’d like to weigh in on this from my point of view. First, there aren’t too many posts on either site right now. Practice is still over a month away, and the first games are about 2 months from now, so we have some time before there are a decent number of posts in either place. Second, Harold was not fired. He left on his own. Third, it’s not out of the ordinary, even when we did have a beat reporter assigned to hockey to go long stretches of time during the off-season without a new post on the blog. So I wouldn’t worry one way or the other.

Now, as for the differences, personally, I find this one easier to navigate. It’s much more aesthetically pleasing than the other one. Easy to find where one post ends and the next begins, easy to see who made the post (rather than “Anonymous” making 95% onf the comments), and my old pals Al Bundy and fanotgame are still here.

True, hockey has been the red-headed stepchild of the Journal News sports section for years, always taking a back-seat to the other winter sports, but it seems like you want to start a boycott of the site & the paper. Like it or not, we all live in Rockland/Westchester/Putnam/Duchess County and The Journal News/Lohud.com is our local news outlet. It would be a shame to see that go away. So while it may not be giving us as much info as we would like, it is still providing us with something that the new blog or my site cannot, and that is impartial professional coverage of the games. Without showing support to them, that may soon disappear.

  81. Really?

LoHud I understand your points. However, I think we will be sorry if and when we dont support the other blog. I have emailed them three times and each time those running the blog have gotten back to me and are updating and changing the site as requested. Anybody could put in anonymous on this blog as well. They are changing that option on the new blog. They are also working on getting live game updates and reports.

I am not looking to boycott the site or the paper at all. I am a paper subscriber… not just an online reader. I grew up with the paper and continue to read it. I am though suggesting that if the paper’s blog doesnt support hockey then maybe we support a blog that does seem to want to support the sport. As you say, without showing the paper blog it could disappear… well wouldnt the same hold true for the other.

    He left on his own?

  82. matt marr

    Harold,
It was a pleasure to go through my high school career with you as the driving force in the local hockey coverage. You did a wonderful job and I wish you the best of luck in all your future endeavors. I was thrilled that we were able to develop a good rapport over the last few seasons (post-game interviews, VC Live, etc.) Drop me a line whenever- I’d love to hear from you.

    Regards,
    Matt

  83. New blog - this isnt a competition

Hi this from the guys at http://section1hockey.blogspot.com/ . We thank you for the support that we have gotten already. Having just read the above posts… there is no reason to start a blog fight. We started a new blog because we wanted to create a new forum for hockey discussions. We wanted to overly service this sport in this area. We are not competition for the lohud paper. We hope to simply provide a resource and a tool to help increase fan enjoyment for the game, drive attendance and to increase awareness of the teams and players. The site is new and we have many changes planned for the season. I know that fans of the game will enjoy them.

Lets all recognize that we are pulling for the same thing. Great high school hockey and great high school coverage.

Feel free to email anytime with suggestions. section1hockey@gmail.com and feel free to visit us at http://section1hockey.blogspot.com/

  84. to get real

why is junior B a waste of time maybe at brewster where there is no A team but even still kids play junior B so they can move up to juniorA half way through the year or the next year or even in a couple of years so honestly if your in cambrias, pesce, prunesti, belgers shoes nd have a chance to maybe go somewhere are you gonna go and give juniors a shot or are you gonna play mariners which is a clear waste of time

  85. chshl

    al bundy,
good question if st. mary’s is entering the a or the b

    not south,
agreed on all points. many non long island kids (from bergen, westchester, dutchess, etc.) will go to st. mary’s so they can play apple core/st. mary’s and will live with a host family

st. mary’s has had many more super stars come out of there for hockey…gilroy is just one…

  86. Not South of the Canadian Border

    Al Bundy,
I am not sure what Mary’s is doing nor am I familiar with the rules in order to play CHSHL. The bottom line is this!
If they are spanking every team they have done nothing for their players and nothing for the league. If I am a parent of a player with exceptional talent I would want him playing the best competition for the sake of his development. My guess is they are no longer interested in supporting excessive travel as it eats the sports budget and maybe they have made a decision to scale back the hockey program playing local. This would bring the results previously discussed. It won’t be a great scenario if they are blowing the rest out. You might be right they may be doing both but I have no idea yet.

  87. LoHud Hockey

    Really?-

No reason both can’t exist. Personally, I read both. You get different points of view on both and I’m sure as the season progresses, there will be a different vibe on both blogs. If you’ve ever gone to the Syracuse one, you will see just how different the vibe can be on two different sites talking about the same thing. I just like the feel of this one better, although that may be attributed to a comfort level having been staring at it for the past few years. Who knows, though? As the season gets underway, maybe more people will find that one better. The die-hards, I’m sure, will be reading (and possibly posting on) both.

As for Harold, yes, he left on his own, although the entire staff of the Journal News got laid off a week later and were forced to re-apply for their jobs so who knows what would have happened if he didn’t jump ship right before the ship hit the iceberg. I’m not going to go into details as it’s not my place to report on someone else’s private life in a public forum such as this, but I have exchanged a couple of emails with him and suffice to say, he and his family are doing fine. I only brought it up because I didn’t want people to see the comment and begin holding hostility towards The Journal News for getting rid of our beat reporter.

  88. CHSHL Fan

I use this BLog because it deals with all topics. With Iona, Stepinac and Fordham part of the CHSHL, I have no interest in the Section 1 Hockey BLog. At least this blog discusses “ALL” topics not just the Section 1 teams.

Harold was, will be and will always be a fine reporter!!! HS hockey was lucky to have him and I hope he returns soon. If not, the new blog will offer him some compensation to write for us!

  92. AAAAA

Paul Doran actually played most of the games last year at Rhode Island but was stuck in a crowded and talanted blueline, so he played some games as a foward.

  93. Al Bundy

Any “travel” news before we start the high school season?

Here in Rockland I see that the Saints have lots of midget teams, I’m not sure how good, and the Capitals aren’t fielding any midget teams. The NY Saints are struggling at the junior level, but don’t feature many (if any) local high school players.

How’s it over in Westchester? Are the Brewster midget programs doing well compared to previous years? Are the Mariners as strong as last year?

I’m disappointed that the HVHL is weak on the midget level. There is certainly enough talent in the section 1 area to have a strong hudson valley based midget league. If properly organized you could probably field 2 Rockland teams, 4 to 5 westchester, and a few orange, putnam, and dutchess teams to have a good competitive midget league.

Nothing worse than Long Island traffic and trips during holiday and high school season!

  94. fanotgame

Hudson Valley League was adversely affected when NY State said no more Tier II play in games (at the Midget Major level at least) for non Long Island League teams. So, Vipers and Hudson Valley Polar Bears (a/k/a Ice Time) are now playing in the Long Island league with fellow “this side of bridge” and prior Long Island League teams Mariners and Brewster. Bit of a trip for the boys from Newburgh. The rest of the Midget Major division of the Long Island League is comprised of 3 LI teams (Freeport, Rebels and the Gulls Tier II team- Ice Cats) and one Staten Island team (Titans) that has some Farrell kids on it. More non LI teams than LI teams in the LI league. So far Mariners have (i)beat Polar Bears in two close, one goal games, (ii)shut out both Brewster and Ice Cats rather easily and (iii) handled the Staten Island team easily. The best game was down at Silver Stix a few weeks back when they gave up an early shorthanded goal and lost 1-0 to a team that played together last year at Nationals (Hatfield, PA). Mariners play Vipers this Saturday AM at Playland.

  95. Conference one

Saw this on the soccer blog. Don’t think the hockey blog will be coming back anytime soon. Wonder how long it will take the suits at Gannet to realise they can save money by shutting some servers down as well.

Brewster Jrs off to a quick 6-2-2 (3-1-0 league) start, with one of our local ‘92 goalies near top of league. Many ‘92 players who have played local high school hockey last season, and a few graduates are leading the team. Up in Marlboro this weekend at Jr. Bruins tourney.

  100. Al Bundy

Seems like lots of “east of the river” travel hockey goings on.

Over in the “west” the Saints are fielding lots of midget teams but look to be about 50% New Jersey kids. Mixed early season results based on NJYHL standings. Capitals are without midget teams this season, which somewhat accounts for the increase in Saints teams.

Overall it doesn’t seem like there are particularly strong midget travel teams this year in Rockland.

  101. Conference one

To Brewster Hockey: Any word on how the Brewster Jr kids who are 92’s or younger (ie Mastracola, Belgers, Gluck, Pesce, Delavergne, Healey etc) are going to juggle the demanding Jr schedule with high school?

And really it is two questions: Is the Junior team willing to be hs friendly but also, are the HS teams willing to be Juniors friendly?

  102. juniors

People in the organization as of last Spring personally told me that they would be HS Friendly, I think that was one of the hooks to get these players who are right now doing a lot better than anyone thought.

  103. LoHud Hockey

Just read the comment on the soccer blog. Thanks for posting it, Conference One.

What I don’t understand is that in the terrible state the Newspaper industry is in these days, many of the papers across the country are shutting down their print versions and focusing 100% (or at least way more) on the online versions. The Journal News is struggling mightily, and instead of following the inevitable trend of converting most, if not all of their content to online-based, they are shutting down the online content such as the blogs for the individual sports.

    Insane.

Anyone out there from the JN still reading this? Joe Lombardi? Anyone?

  104. Conference one

I had a similar thought LoHud. Of course, I’m not convinced that the business model surrounding web content will work for everyone; but Gannett and the JN certainly seem to be moving in a different direction. With just 4 reporters for all high school sports, you can be sure that there will be a lot less coverage of all sports going forward in the near term.

  105. Conference one

Juniors: I’m sure Brewster told you that they would be HS friendly; but in reality, with practices Tues/Wed/Thurs and most weekends involving 2-3 games and lots of overnight travel weekends I’m not sure how any Junior program can be that friendly. And do you know how the High Schools involved (Mahopac, Lakeland, Scarsdale etc) are going to handle their top players missing lots of practices and games?

  106. Al Bundy

    Lohud,

Joe Lombardi moved on from the Journal News prior to the spring lacrosse season. You can see him featured here on this site:

    http://laxlessons.com/blog/

Like yourself and the section 1 hockey site, Joe is involved in a site that chronicles lacrosse in the tri-state region. I’ll guess that Joe’s site is for profit. His bottom line should be helped with further diminished JN coverage.

...Perhaps you too may want to consider changing the section 1 site business model to take advantage of no JN hockey coverage??

  107. juniors

From my conversation with the people at Brewster, I got the impression that missing stuff here and there isn’t a big deal, but to constantly miss would be a problem…I am sure that is the same policy with most of the High Schools not named Suffern or Mamaroneck, you have to remember though that High Schools have there own school athletic rules, and to be honest, some of the coaches just adopt the school rules so when there is a problem the HS coach doesn’t have to be the bad guy, he can just say, “talk to the AD”. But, the bottom line is if you are going to miss a big chunk of either HS or Juniors, then why bother? Is it worth it to miss 5 or more games and 2 practices a week?

  108. fanotgame

It all depends on the HS coach or the school’s rules. Some are very clear that every missed practice or game will be penalized. Others are more lenient. For example, the Rye coach says if you miss a Rye practice, you sit one game. If you miss a Rye game, you sit two games. No exceptions. All stater Eck missed a game (first Mamo tourney game a few years back) for a holiday visit to grandparents and then sat the next two (Mamo tourney champ game and Rome tourney first round game). Very clear, very simple. Can’t play both juniors and Rye HS hockey.

  109. Juniors

Once High School starts Juniors will go down to two practices a week. I know that Mahopac practice Monday and Wednesday before Jr practice so Mastrocola will not have any practice conflicts. I am not sure about game conflicts.

  110. Juniors

The Junior players that play both will have to make a choice if there is a conflict to go to jrs or to High school. I guess if Jrs is a league game they will go to the Jr game if it is not then they might choose HS. I know the coach from Jrs said they could miss one of two but after that they know what could happen there are 26 kids on the team the kids who play alot have a chance of losing there spot and being scratched

  111. juniors

Well ok, it is a business, even at the younger levels. If you are willing to pay money, then there is a travel team for everyone. Look at the Vipers this year, so many new travel teams and they are plucking whats left of what used to be a strong house league at WSA to field the rest of the lower level travel teams.

  112. juniors

the top viper teams at each level are in the LIAHL. Long Island Tier 11

    Al Bundy-

Thanks. I didn’t know Joe was gone. So does anyon know who is actually running the sports section of the JN nowadays? I think I just saw a tumbleweed roll though here.

As for the business model of http://www.section1hockey.com, I am way ahead of you. It was never really a non-profit, although it is paid for entirely by sponsors, so you will start to see some local ads up there this year.

If you haven’t visited the site in a while, give it a look, there’s been a bunch of stylistic changes and there is a ton of info in the “History” section to look at including post-season award winners, standings, and champions going back pretty far.

Also, while on the topic of ads, if anyone out there reading this is interested in becoming a sponsor on the site and putting up an ad for their business (or even a note to cheer on their favorite player or team), email me through the “contact us” section of the site.

  115. Anonymous

If we could get one or two of the high schools to offer an elective class or an after school club in sports broadcasting they could do webcasts of some of the games. The students could do everything and learn how a broadcast works and we would get some webcasts out of it. I don’t think the cost of the equipment is great since schools already have cameras and such for AV.

  116. suffernlove

LoHud, I thought the section1hockey site was not for profit and that the sponsorship dollars were to go back to the site. Wasnt that what was promoted on this blog ages ago when bloggers were asked to visit the site?

  117. LoHud Hockey

    suffernlove-

It was never billed as not-for-profit. The sponsorship dollars do certainly go back into the site, but keep in mind, the main expense of any website is labor and the money made from the sponsors is used to cover those costs. While it is not a non-profit, believe you me, there is no profit being made on this site.

  118. sec1fan

why is the for profit or not for profit status of the section1hockey site an issue? anybody who has taken the time to build and maintain the site for our using pleasure (for free i might add) is ENTITLED to earn whatever it brings. I doubt it brings in enough to warrant the time spent creating and updating it. If it does, it is certainly well deserved.

Fordham University clobbers New Paltz –
I checked out the 1st 2 periods of Fordham U vs New Paltz. MCHC club hockey at the Ice Hutch last night. Fordham U has a pretty good team. They clobbered New Paltz. The level of the hockey is really pretty decent. New Paltz was a little thin. After their best 4 or 5 players there was a big dropoff. The have an outstanding goalie. Fordham has some very good players. #2, #89, #19 and some others. They have a guy from Larchmont, Kevin Baum. Good player. I recommend checking out some of their games if you’re a hockey nut like me (its free too). Just try to go to one where they play a good team. They were up 7-1 after 2 when I left. They were outshooting New Paltz like 43-15 or something after 2 periods.

  121. Iona Fan

That’s great to hear about Kevin Baum, from Iona Prep. Also, there was another CLub Hockey game this past weekend in New Jersey. You had Boston College (Cody King/Iona Prep)) playing against William Paterson (Chris Wynne/Suffern). Great game, alot of action with BC beating WP 8 to 5.

  122. More locals on club

The ACHA Club I and II showcase was held in Ohio this past weekend. Know of at least 2 locals playing for their respective teams – Matt Ruthberg (Suffern) for Rutgers and Kevin Moro (C. North) for SUNY Canton. Good to see local boys playing good club hockey. Unfortunately, it looks like more Canadians are taking up these spots too.

  123. Josh Schachter

Good luck to Harold. For the 2009-2010 season, HockeyBarn.com has created a section of its site devoted entirely to high school hockey in New York State. You can visit it at http://www.hockeybarn.com/local/new-york. The section will be full of weekly updates, game recaps, and special announcements from every team in the state.

We are currently in the process of enrolling team correspondents to report on each team. If you are interested please register at http://hockeybarn.com/columns/writers_signup/local.htm.

You can send an email to info@hockeybarn.com with any questions.

For those who are interested, Rui is doing well in Wisconsin. He’s skating in the NAHL for the Janesville Jets. They had a rough time at the showcase. New goalie and finally some wins.

Heard that Mariners U18AA may scrimmage Fordham U Club this Wednesday at Playland. Rich Guberti coaches both teams. Wonder which bench he will cover?

  126. Not South of the Canadian Border

Canadians on Club Teams are paying full fare as they get zero financial aid as they are not able to fill out a FAFSA form as that requires a US Tax Return. Any Canadian Student attending a US College without scholarship is also walking away from available Canandian Funds which can be used for Canadian University and Colleges. They get some decent breaks on local educations.

Thus the kids playing ACHA Club from Canada are there becasue they and their parents are interested in the Education and the Club Hockey is just Icing on the Cake. They may get some exchange from the Canadian Govt but it is costly for the for sure.

    Note to the Journal News.
The HS Hockey season is just around the corner. Weeks away from opening!!!!

I am a subscription (Paying Customer) getting the JN in my driveway everyday. Your paper offers less and less everyday.
I suggest you find a moderator to provide a clean sheet at least weekly for this blog so those of us who enjoy HS Hockey in our area can continue thinking nicely about your meager product offering. Certainly the challenges in your business are easy to understand, what is not easy to understand is why we are still looking at Harolds goodbye from August 5th when we are in mid Novemeber.
What does it take to put up any wording that would inspire this blog to continue. Please wake up!!!

  128. Mamk fan

Hey hockey mom yor son NEVER beat Mamaroneck. How does that feel ? LOL

  129. Old School Mountie

Hey Hockey mom soon your son will be 22 years old with no more hockey, no degree and teaching hockey at Ebersol for $10 an hour. P.S. your son NEVER beat Suffern

  130. Suffern Love

its amazing. we asked for a new blog and for some one to care about hockey. So somebody answered the call and created a new blog for us that has already gotten some traction. Yet, many of us (yes i look at both blogs) still post here instead of the new blog. JN has shown you that they dont have an interest in hockey, times are tough and they are not putting the resources to hockey. Even better if you email the people who run the section1hockey blog they respond. They are planning game trackers and great features.

  131. fanotgame

Heard that Dman Jake Turrin, formerly of RCDS and now Milton Academy and also ‘08 Empire team and Brewster Express Midget travel player is being recruited by two ECAC DI teams (Colgate and Yale). Pretty impressive for a local ‘92 birth year player.

  132. veteran

I am a little reluctant to post on the new blog. I have no idea who is running or controlling this new blog, if the people running it have an agenda, or what the situation is. I will probably stay right here, and thats just my opinion. We know who runs this blog.

  133. Al Bundy

    Hockey Mom,

Thanks for the update. It’s good to hear how past players from the area are doing and good for the current group to pay attention to this. I’m also following Matt Willows, albeit online, with the NJ Hitmen. Your son and Matt Willows are 2 of the better players to come out of the section 1 schools in the last 5-10 years. It shows how tough it is to get to the next level (NCAA division 1).

I’m all for kids trying and working for it. After all is said and done they’ll be better for this effort.

  134. Suffern Love

LoHud, them leaving the blog is the easiest way for them to keep some hockey fans interested. Its of no effort for them to do so.

Veteran. I have emailed three times with the people who run (or i should be more accurate and say that respond to the emails). It seems like they are simply hockey fans with no agenda other than wanting better coverage for hockey. What agenda might they have?

I am not saying we need to stop posting here. I have enjoyed the site for years. JN simply isnt putting resources to hockey and they are doing the best they can. However, if a site comes up from what seems to be a need shouldnt we have fans support that?

You can always emails the people at the blog. They seem rather responsive.

  135. Hockey Mom

Ok…so the immature jealous individuals still have to get their digs in…It’s ok because if you want to compare a single individual losing to a team, I guess you realize the talent of that individual. BTW – Honorable Mention for the North Div of the NAHL this week! YOU GO RUI!
    http://janesvillejets.pointstreaksites.com/

    Al Bundy…thank you!

  136. Hockey Mom

    BTW Toot Toot! lol lol

As far as the other blog….I can’t seem to get into it either. Maybe if they changed the appearance to make it more appealing. It is looks/has a very nondescript feeling. Can it be formatted to this setup/framework and them maybe it would intice us to move over????

  137. Anon

I can’t post on the other site. Something is wrong with it. I can read it but I can’t post on it. Did Fordham beat Mariners U18 AA?

  138. Kiss

    Fordham vs. Mariners U18 AA:

This was a scrimmage put together for Gene Simmons A & E show. It was never intended to be a actually game. From what I was told the show ran into a schedule conflict and the event went on in front of a lot of people. Sounds like a lot of fun, wish I could of made it.

  139. Suffern Love

The other blog works the same as this blog. You click on the line says comments and then you get a page with all of the comments. On the bottom of that is comment box. Type your information and your comment. Attach a name to it. If you use Name/URL it sometimes asks you to hit enter again. It seems to work. Even for someone who has frozen at Sport-O for years… I can figure it out.

    Its very easy

    HMom

Very good, Toot away. Looking forward to the next Toot.

  141. Al Bundy

    Al Bundy,

    Fordham vs. Mariners U18?

A couple of years ago some high profile Clarkstown North hockey players jeopardized their whole high school hockey season for playing for a travel club team against a college club team.

I’ll be sure that this Fordham vs. Mariners game, exhibition, scrimmage, reality show whatever, was within the rules of section 1 participation?

  142. eligibility

It is ok if HS kids play in this game as long as it is not during the HS season. Once the season starts, HS kids cannot step foot on the ice with any kind of College organization, even if it is D. 3 club

  143. Kelly Bundy

    Dad,

Don’t worry about the Gene Simmons show featuring a fake scrimmage. Pay attention at home cause I am working as a dancer at a strip club.

    Love your daughter.

    Kelly,

PS: Bud your son is gay and mom is cheating on you.

  144. CHSHL Fan

I’m a fan of the CHSHL…..Section 1 Blog does nothing for me. Some of the Top players in the county play for Stepinac, Fordam and Iona. Other blog will not cover these three teams. SO this is the Blog for me!

  145. edward haskin

CHSHL Fan, a bit confused since it was stated on the new blog that the new blog was planning on devoting a section to the CHSHL. Again I dont understand fans that cry out for more coverage and then somebody creates that new coverage and you say “no”... your choice.

  146. Funny!

I have to agee with the CHSHL fan… At this moment, there’s nothing about the CHSHL. Maybe instead of putting it on a blog which no one reads at this time, then maybe you should of posted your intensions on this blog. Everything you had on the website last year had no reference to any of the CHSHL teams. Hopefully you have something! Then I to will tryout the new blog!

  147. LoHud Hockey

    Funny!-

I think you are confusing the Section 1 website with the Section 1 blog. The http://www.section1hockey.com, while it has a link to the CHSHL website in its “Other Links” section because that is a local league, it is not intended to cover the CHSHL. It’s hard enough keeping up-to-date on the 29 teams in the section.

The Section 1 blog wasn’t around last year. That was started up by someone over the summer (completely separate from the website and run by a different person) after news broke of Harold leaving the Journal News and their susequent layoffs that decimated the entire staff (not just the sports section).

He did list his intentions for the blog in an earlier post on this same topic (if you scroll up about 100 or so posts) and he did plan on including talk of the CHSHL on there. He (or a big supporter of his) has posted his intentions multiple times since then in a few posts that have a tone of being upset that people are still posting here instead of there. I’m not sure why he chose to call it the “Section 1 Hockey Blog” if his intent was to include the CHSHL as the name kind of alienates the Stepinac/Iona/Fordham fans, but I’m sure he had his reasons.

  148. Suffernlove

LoHud, you are correct I do support the new blog and I also support this blog. I also like your website. I am not angry that people post here. I am a bit dismayed that there is a group that put a blog together by request of this blog and that some people questioned its intent. I am not connected to the blog but did get a nice feeling from a few emails I exchanged with the people there.

There is no doubt that all companies and the journal news have been decimated by the economy and by layoffs. I am not angry at JN. I thought Harold did an amazing job and only wish that such a fervent fan base would be appreciated. I guess I was appreciative that somebody picked up and respected our love for hockey and created something in response. Where anybody posts, how they post (you are correct) is not my issue.

  149. Bircks

Does anyone know who the goalies are for SNS?

  150. Bircks

sorry, found out it’s Tabachnick. Anybody know how he is? Will he give SNS a shot this year?

  151. CN

i believe tryouts/practices start next week for most teams. any word on how CN is going to be this year? I know they have some respectable upperclassmen, but any up and coming newcomers to look out for?

  152. fanotgame

Publics tryouts start one week from today. Catholics have already started to skate together. Don’t think the ice goes down at RCDS or Harvey for a week or so. Some publics have been playing together in fall leagues. I think of the season in terms of groups of similar level teams. Here is how my groups shake out:

    Group One:

Iona- This is the year they put it together. Decent goalie and super depth/talent at both D and forward.

Rye- No real weaknesses. Good prep goalie, return 4 dmen who played last year. Two strong skating frosh D should see a bit of time. Last year’s forward lines one and two return intact. If the football team keeps winning (what else is new?), the upstate Thanksgiving tourney could be a good team building exercise playing without the goalie, top d men and second line forward.

Mamo- If they get solid goaltending to replace Glaser, these Tigers will continue to be one of the top D I teams in the state. Plenty of skating talent. Game with Rye at Playland right befor Xmas should be a good one.

WP- Super depth/talent at D. Some nice forwards who will have a chance to carry the load themselves with the departure of McCarrick/Altieri. Would rank them higher if I knew they had a viable option at goalie.

Suffern- Think the new Suffern goalie will be solid. Norwin best “stay at home” D man in Section. Second only to McGee overall. Fuchs also plays well in the Mountie defensive system. Issue will be scoring. Not likely to get a lot from the blue line. Can Jaeger do it without a Hiller feed or Hill creating space for him? There are likely a bunch of solid Mountie forwards that will step up. If they can get scoring from two lines, Suffern will be a DI state force.

L/P- Good top level skating talent. Not sure about the depth. Goalie is feisty and can steal a game. If the junior B players find a way to get to the HS games, they will be a force in the DI playoffs.

    Group Two:

Fordham- Heard Guberti not playing for the school team. The other jr goalie is solid HS player. Thin on D after Brown. A couple of dangerous forwards. Could knock off a few good teams. Overall depth appears to be the Ram’s issue.

RCDS- Have their own rink and recruit. Should have better goalie play this year.

Harvey- See RCDS above, except I know nothing about the Cavilier’s goalie.

Stepinac- Better than many bolggers think. Miano can still dangle and score. They have a few other strong skating forwards. Reagan a solid HS D man. Young goalie plays high level travel. Just not enough players to be strong all season. Like Fordham, the Crusaders could pick off a few good teams.

Pac- How far will Fatone’s play in net and Mastracola’s on the ice bring the Indians? They have a good coach, but I don’t see enough depth for this team to make the DI semis this season.

SHI- DII newcomer is the team most likley to challenge Rye for Section title. Have some good top level skating talent. Issues will be depth and playing a freshman goalie.

Pelham- Always lurking, with Witz on the bench. Lost a ton to graduation/prep, but will always find a way to be competitive. Difficult schedule will help the Pelicans rebuild quickly. Look for them to play in their defensive zone for long periods and counterattack every once in a while. Not sure they have the firepower to get to the Section finals this year, but I never count them out till they are done.

SNS- With Marasco now graduated, seems to be a team of many solid contributors without standout players. Will be interesting to see how this works out. Should be a DII semifinalist.

New Ro- Prunesti and Mfoula both talented two way players. Goaltending will be just fine. Serious lack of depth hurts the Hugenots.

Did I miss anyone? I am sure to hear from ETB, but I think they lost too much. North has a few kids, but not enough to make my Group Two. Is Flemming playing for Brewster? If so, the Bears with Miller still have a good one two combo at forward. Don’t see RTH bouncing all the way back to prominence this year. Byram Hills wil be OK.

  153. Gotta Know

Anyone know when Catholic’s release their Varsity rosters?

  154. fanotgame

Last season was the first for the All Section team. It was supposed to be the top 14 players (inclusive of skaters and goalies) but was expanded, likely due to all the Section One players named to the all state team. Sometimes good players on lesser teams don’t make teams like this. Like the All State teams, you are somewhat dependent on the team you play for. And my guess is that ties are broken in favor of seniors. Taking all that into consideration, here are my preseason picks (will list about two dozen or so to choose from):

Goalies: Gluck, Fatone, Rix, Connington (maybe Glaviano gets a nod if he can keep his GAA below 4- assume no Delaverne due to injury)

D: McGee, Norwin, Belger, Christiansen, Lawrence, Taussig, Byrnes (maybe young Pesce although only a soph- assume no Ciotti due to juniors A schedule)

F: Pesce, Mastracola, Katsuta, Mundinger, Prunesti, Mfoula, Jaeger, Conner, Hagen, Broderick, Caffrey (Olivario, Anniballe and Miller if they can put up numbers on their own and maybe young Belger although only a soph-assume Flemming not playing here)

Obviously, this list changes if the junior b guys can’t manage the juniors conflicts. You probably have to play close to a full HS schedule to be considered.

  155. carmel fan

    fanotgame-

glaviano shouldn’t be kept out of the all section debate just due to the fact of a weak carmel defense. hopefully they can step it up this year and clear the puck like they’re supposed to. also, what’s wrong with delaverne?

  156. chshl

    gotta know,

iona is releasing rosters/schedules this week…will post as soon as possible

just from looking at websites, hear iona booked north and rcds for december mid week games already…

besides their league (mary’s, anthony’s, chaminade, farrell, fordham, stepinac), i’m hoping they book some local powers…bergen catholic, bosco, m-w, maybe a new canaan or fairfield prep, etc…would’ve been great if other section 1 teams wanted to book them, too (suffern, wp, mamo, pelham, etc. do not have them listed on their scheds as of today)

  157. chshl

    fanotgame,

word on street is that iona had to leave so many talented froshes and sophs back that they submitted a request to chshl board to have a gold and maroon team on jv

  158. more iona

they booked harvey (as usual) mid week game in december…and are playing at bergen catholic mid january

  159. fanotgame

    carmel fan- heard shoulder surgery

  160. fanotgame

chshl- The publics (statewide) got their schedule reduced to 20 regular season games. So, once you do your league games and for the Mamo, Suffern, Rye and Pelham teams, a few upstate tourneys to check out possible state tourney foes, not much room for other games. I know Rye did grab MW and local rival RCDS. Heard the coach contacted both Iona and Fordham. The Rams coach got back first and Rye plays them in Jan. Would have loved to see an Iona/Rye match this season. Oh well.

Carmel fan- agree with you, but you know how these things go.

  161. tigerin the tank

forgive me for saying this but I can understand fans wanting Section to schedule Iona. Quite honestly the team did not do that well last season and while they may look good on paper and preseason like they did last year until they prove that they are for real I see no point in the better programs going out of their way to schedule them. good point that section 1 teamsgot cutback and again last year the team folded up the tent. Lets see them play to the preseason and paper roster they have

  162. fanotgame

Iona’s success will depend on their team discipline. Last year, they had talent, but the better talent was used to playing jr hockey and couldn’t/didn’t want to adjust their play to the much more tightly called HS game.

  163. Westchester Hockey

    fanotgame

A few comments on your league picks.

    Forward: Include younger Belger
Goal: Exclude Gluck (won’t be allowed to play by HS) and Delavergne (probably out till January), Include Glaviano
    Defense: Include younger Pesce

  164. more iona

    fanotgame, well said.
will be interesting to see how cambria (applecore), mc ardle (former applecore, believe brewster) and others adjust to tighter called game, specifically cambria..

d looks to be a steady unit of 4
    kirincic-traficante
    patalano-lipsky

with turnbull knowing mc ardle and mc elroy can drop back to quarterback or provide additional legs, especially as the patalano-lipsky pairing gets groomed in this year..

will be interesting to see what forwards make the team, going to be a stacked 4 lines…

  165. carmel fan

    fanotgame

i did some research, and you’re right, delavergne’s done for almost the whole season with a shoulder

  166. who's playing?

Gluck should be able to play, I know that McGee, the older Pesce, and Belger plan on playing HS, and all 4 are on the same team. However, goalies are different, hes playing amazing right now, he might not want to miss a game and then become Wally Pipp.

The 2 kids I wonder about are 2 that after this season is done could be talked about as the 2 best in the league and that is Broderick from WP and the younger Pesce. They are both on the Avalanche team that Prunesti played on last year. But I heard the Avalanche now frowns on players playing HS. I guess the guy in charge over there used to coach HS in Jersey and now is done so he doesn’t want the players playing HS anymore….Anyone know if these 2 are playing? And, how about Prunesti with the JUnior B Empire Applecore?

  167. Let them play

Hopefully all 4 will play HS as well. All 4 have legitimate futures in hockey. I’m not saying they should be allowed to come and go as they please, but I hope they can work things out with their respective teams that will allow them to play. Without these 4, Sec I. just isn’t as good.

  168. Kool-Aid Time gain!

    Let them play,

What are you drinking…..all four would be lucky to play club hockey in college! Just let them enjoy High School Hockey because that’s what they will end up remembering! Not some watered down Junior team!

  169. Westchester Hockey

    who’s playing

The problem with Gluck is Scarsdale has a rule that says any misses and you are off team (even for captains). He definitely has some conflicts. Unless they change rule in next month, he can’t play.

  170. felix

Most teams not just Scarsdale I would think have a rule like that. Its too bad that the players have to be in this position. If the player is that good, and by that I mean he can play collegiate hockey at a division 1 or 3 level then maybe high school hockey is not for them. We know that the very best players in high school the last few years are playing club which is good hockey too. So the big question once again on this blog is are you better or possibly a better college prospect than those who were the best players here and are playing club?
As a parent I would not expect a coach to allow a player to miss games and practices and still be part of the team. I would assume its really hard to keep a team together when there are separate rules for separate players. If the player is playing on a legitimate junior team and I mean like Apple Core or one of the top Junior programs thats one thing, as many of the teams are ‘junior’ teams in name only. That has to be considered. King from Iona was a fabulous high school player as was Ruthberg from Suffern as two examples and both are playing club and apparently doing well. As a parent and player be objective and decide if you or your kid is better than those two? If you think your kid makes a clear and bigger impact in the high school game than those two then maybe stick with juniors and give it a shot. If not, what you are working towards is not a division 3 or 1 situation but most certainly a club career which is fine, but you probably can do the club career without going the midget junior route and missing high school sports

  171. Let them play

I guess some of it has to do with the state of the team.

At first glance last year I thought Byrham Hills was a joke of team. They had their goalie playing foward, they had 9 guys for some games, and their players seemed to go and come as they please.

But then, what are they supposed to do, if they didn’t let those kids play, they would probably have to fold their team.

You then have a case like SH/I. They let the kids play, but sit them out if they miss time. They are at the level where they have just enough players that they can afford to sit them here and there, but not enough to get through a whole season with out them.

Then of course you have the Sufferns and Pelhams that have so many players, they can afford to do with out some.

For some teams its about winning championships and for others its just abour surviving and NOT becoming the next Edgemont, Eastchester, TZ, Nyack, Harrison, etc. (I am refering to the lack of these teams to sustain without merging, Not the talent). Because as we know, especially in this economy, once you lose a team, your not getting it back.

So, I say, the first thing you have to do, is ensure the survival of your team.

  172. Al Bundy

    Let them Play,

Good post. Some schools struggle for turnout. Thats just hockey. It’s just not a sport that is conducive to casual athletes just “trying out for the team”. It’s intimidating if you’ve never really skated before.

I’m not saying let kids come and go as they please, but if it’s a choice between program survival and applying the same attendance rules you do to the football and soccer programs, than I’d chose program survival.

Apply a rule structure to the club program kids for missed practice and games. Unloading the bus, filling the water bottles, collecting pucks, sitting for a period, miss a game, etc., etc.

Whats the cliche..don’t cut off your nose to spite..

  173. lahw

    Here’s a novel idea…
Coaches can STOP putting kids in a bad position and not penalize them for the conflicts. It works in WP.

  174. grand dad

would like to respond to lahw
Coaches are not putting the kids in bad positions. The kids and parents are putting themselves in these positions. The high school coach is not telling the kids to play travel, they are just coaching their teams. How about the travel coaches? Are nt they putting the kids in bad positions? The travel coaches do not allow misses either. As far the comment “it works in White Plains” does it? With a rink in town and one of the larger player bases in Westchester last year was the first time they have made it to the Sectional Championship in at least 15 years so while you say it works do you mean its tolerated or the team is successful?

  175. fanotgame

Different school and travel coaches have different rules. Simple as that. If you want to play both, you need to pick the travel team that best accomodates that. You can’t pick your school team or that team’s coach’s rules. So, understand your school coach’s rules. If playing travel and school are both important, and your school coach happens to be one who does not allow misses, pick the travel program that allows you to miss here and there. Why do you think so many Suffern, Pelham and Rye kids start out playing AAA travel and then back down as Midget players to AA programs that are more HS friendly? Because the school coach says that is the only way you can participate on my team. Why do you think the Mariners Midget teams are so strong? Because the program is HS friendly. They get a lot of kids who could play juniors at Brewster or Apple Core, but don’t want to give up school hockey. There are enough choices out there for it to work for everyone, regardless of your school coach’s rules.

  176. Kevin

Agreed Fanotgame but I also think always coloring the high school coach as the only guy with rules is unfair. I turn it around the other way. I think the travel player and his parents are unfair. They want both, even if it compromises team mates. Some travel players and parents think its ok to miss travel for high school and miss high school for travel. They completely disregard the basic idea of being on a team. They discount the meaning of being on a team. I have heard this argument, and I think I read it here before. Many of the players who play on these junior teams that are in question with high school are in no way division 1 or division 3 prospects, so lets look at it this way. If a high school player from White Plains told the coach that he would be missing 1 practice a week and perhaps 4 games during the season due to him being an accomplished trumpet player how would that work? How about a varsity quarter back who tells the hockey coach that he needs to work with his personal quarter back coach once a week and he will miss a high school practice a week for that. An eagle scout is going on three trips with the boy scouts so he will be missing 4 high school games.
Who is to say what is a good reason to miss? Why is travel hockey, and its not even the best travel the area has to offer, get a free pass?

  177. make a decision

you cannot have it all. make a decision. Its clear that high school ice hockey and travel hockey occur during the same time periods. Make a decision. If you would rather play midget or junior hockey and there are too many conflicts with the high school team be reasonable to both of your team mates. Both the travel team and the high school team or any team in any sport for that matter count on their team mates to come to all events. We could all come up with reasons to miss team functions but is it fair to the other players on the team who count on you? Why does the travel high school player feel he should have a separate set of rules than all other players? How do his team mates feel about that? If you are on a team, and you commit to a team you should honor that committment

  178. Westchester Hockey

    make a decision

The people who will not be allowed to play by their high school programs are not backing down from any commitments. They are speaking to HS coaches upfront (not deciding mid-season to not show up). They are trying to get their HS coaches to allow them to be part of the program without a 100% commitment. Maybe their HS teammates would like them at some games to improve their chances to win. I think most of you would agree that very few HS programs (probably none around here) can give a player the experience and competition to improve themselves as a high level travel/Jr program. Obviously they would miss out on the “fun” aspect of HS, but that is their decision.

  179. Al Bundy

All this is fine. Just don’t be overly critical about HS programs which accomodate players to play travel. For many of these HS programs, there survival and competitive chances rely on having these skilled players. The Byram Hills example discussed avove is a good one. This allows this smalll school team to remain un merged. Fine if it works for them.

  180. fanotgame

Thanks Lohud for asking the JN to open it up (if you did). Rosters should be final soon. Think Rye completes cuts by the end of the week. I am interested to find out whether the Junior B/Midget AAA players have worked out ways to play on their respective school teams. Pesces, Mastracola, Prunesti, McGee, Belgers, Lawrence, Broderick? Also, who will be the top HS goalies with Delaverne out with an injury and Gluck seemingly unable to manage the junior hockey conflict.

  181. Hockey Fan

If Cambria & Miano (CHSHL) can work it out with their Travel teams and their schools, then why is it so difficult for the High School coaches to bend a little?

If these High School coaches don’t bend, then Hockey around here will eventually become non competitive. Sure you will have teams like Mamaroneck, Suffern and Rye putting a good product on the ice but the rest of the teams will have BIG PROBLEMS!

  182. Hockey season

Thanks for opening the blog back up

  183. Al Bundy

Will this blog ever get a new topic?

I’d like to know the JN’s plans. If all they are doing is letting us post on Harold’s “Thank you” topic until the post numbers reach triple digits, than please just shut the blog down now and the transition to the new blog can be made.

I kind of expect that hs hockey will be rolled into the Gameday blog, which is where soccer, filed hockey and volleyball games were discussed for the spring sports.

  184. north

Clarkstown North wins 6-2 scrimmage over Mt. Plesent

  185. CN

any surprise players on CN to look out for this year?

  186. Here we go

Mamaroneck Scrimmages Pelham today at Ice hutch at 4:20 P.M

  187. fanotgame

Rye beat Scarsdale 11-3. Outshot them something like 50 to 10. Poor Rye goalie had to sit and watch play in the other end for minutes at a time and then face the occaisonal shot. Olivario not on the ice for Scarsdale. Younger Klein kid for Scarsdale looked solid. Rye missing a bunch of their top defensemen and the 2 second line wings (recovering from travel injuries or ineligible due to lack of HS practices). Garnets rested their other top players for the last 1/3 of scrimmage and let the back of bench play as final cuts are today. Should be a better scrimmage next week vs. Pelham, when more of the Garnets are eligible to play and the roster trimmed.

  188. mamaroneck

Mamaroneck at Pelham for a scrimmage today. The two defending section champs do battle. Mamo should be ready I hear Pelham is missing a few yet but should be entertaining

  189. like preseason football

Don’t read anything into these scrimages,

I saw one last year in which a seemed to win although there was no score. The winning team scored about 6 goals on the other teams 4th line. When the 2 met in the regular season and that 4th line didn’t play, the team that lost the scrimmage won the regular season games by a landslide.

  190. fanotgame

to preseason- fair point. But, it is all we have to talk about for the next 2 weeks until the regular season starts.

  191. Travel and HS Conflicts...

    ...it depends.

We’ve discussed ad nauseum on here about circumstances in CT—-where you can’t do both.

Here in mighty Section 1 (and based on last year, I mean that sincerely) it really depends. If we can agree on some overriding principles-that practice matters big time; and coaches prefer that their TEAMS have all players practice together as much as possible; and that nobody likes travel players just showing up for games—then it will depend on how many conflicts there are for a particular player.

For example, if the player consistently has Tue-Thu travel practices and will miss HS practices an overwhelming majority of the time, the you can NOT blame a HS coach who will not let that player play on the HS team. This is the ‘just-show-up-for-the-games’ scenario, which actually cause more trouble than it’s worth for all stakeholders of the team.

On the other hand, if the travel schedule permits the player to go to enough HS practices to set lines that click on game days—and make a substantial number of HS games-then if I were a coach I’d be happy to make some allowances. How much is enough? It depends on the coach—and no one has a right to blast any coach because it’s their team and for the most part Section 1 coaches are in it more for providing the overall competitive hockey and team experience rather than just the winning percentage.

We’ve seen this decision play out both ways recently around here. We know HS teams that had successful seasons with their travel stars on a less than full-time basis—-and without (btw, there’s a lot to be said for challenging kids to rise to some level of adversity).

But ultimately, the HS coach has to assess the player’s availability and determine if that’s enough of a commitment to run the TEAM. Sometimes it is and sometime it’s not.

  192. WP

A lot of people have said the travel and HS work at WP….

One of the reasons it works is because the players don’t miss a big game, for instance last year McGee missed a Gulls game to play against Suffern…or was it Mamo, I don’t remember.

And, both WPs coaches and players should be applauded for that.

Not to many people complain when New Rochelle and SH/I kids miss either….does anyone know their tricks?

Also White Plains plays most of their games on Thursdays.

  193. mamk pelham

mamk demolished pelham about 6-2 goals for mamk goals by joe nacelerio, matt connor, scott hagan, mike wojciechowski, sam christiansen and craig schiff…not sure who scored for pelham but mamk was all over pelham

  194. iona

iona prep scrimmages at burke catholic, tomorrow (saturday), 9:30pm at ice time

iona’s other scrimmage is against pelham, monday, nov. 23, 4pm at ice hutch

  195. fanotgame

The report on Mamo vs. Pelham is about what I expected. I can imagine a scene where younger, smaller, scrappier Pelham kids play hard in their zone for most of the scrimmage. The Pelican system makes it hard to score on them. Mamo has some big forwards who likely muscled their way to the net and eventually scored. Pelham must have a little more firepower than I thought to score 2 off Mamo, who I think has a prety good defense. Who was in net for the Tigers? Rye vs. Pelham next Thursday afternoon should be fun. With football over, most of the Garnets are now eligigble (a few regulars still nursing injuries). They go at you with speed on one line and biug physicalplayers on the other. A few kids need to heal before the third line gets in full swing.

  196. slacrosse

    fanotgame,

do you know where and when next TH srimmage is bet rye/pelham

    thanx

  197. suffern

we have to scrimmage iona this year, i hear they are not that strong.

  198. fanotgame

to slacrosse- Thursday Nov. 19 4:15 PM at the Hutch.

  199. Mamo

Pelham scored two but I did not think it was the 1st line that scored certainly bodes well for them. The Tigers are the class of the area once again. Lots of depth and strength and skilled personnel
Pelham had many new faces we did not recognize lots of young players.

  200. slacrosse

    fanotgame,

    Thanx

Kevin Baum of Larchmont and Iona Prep won MCHC Player of the Month for Forham

  202. mamo

agreed Fanotgame. hmmmmm, as a Mamaro fan I am not concerned about Pelham. Tiggers need to beat Suffern White Plains and the other potential playoff foes. Pelham is a 2 division team and needs to concern them selves with that. Although Pelham has hung with Mamaro they have not beat Mamaro in quite some time, so bragging about what my fav team does against 2 division teams does nothing for me. If you watched the scrimmage hmmmm you would have noticed a significant difference in the two teams. Pelham is very young lots of sophs and younger. Mamaro needs to get the new starting goalie ready and find places for the talent to jell. I would nt call Iona young they are fairly typical of what they have been the last few years. They look good up front, so so on defense and inexperienced in goal. The last few seasons they probably did not play as good as they should have and if they do that again the same results will occur and thats under achieving

  203. ACHA

    In a D. 1 club vs. NCAA D. 3 game

Weslyean vs. Rhode Island, Weslyean won 6-3. Tough to get a good read on the game as both teams used a few goalies and looked like they were rolling 4 or 5 lines trying people at.

Pleasant suprise to see Adam Kaiser suiting up for Weslyean formely of North Rockland, then Don Bosco, then Hotchkiss…..It seems Weslyean took all of Hotckisses seniors last year, they may be much better than last year. Also playing for Weslyean was someone named William Choi, it said on the program that he played for Scarsdale last year, but I don’t remember him.

  204. Westchester Hockey

    ACHA

Choi is from Scarsdale, but I think he played with Bobcats last year. He might have played his soph year with Scarsdale.

  205. Al Bundy

Looks like all the talk has moved over to the section 1 hockey blog site.

I just can’t understand what the JN is thinking. I understand the difficult economic times and cutbacks, but it can’t cost to much just to maintain a blog site? Now they lose all the eyeballs from the hockey community. I can imagine how cut-back the print coverage will become.

I’m glad for the new site and it fills the void from the JN’s absence.
