What’s the score?

It’s already been a long week at TJN, and with a couple of guys on furlough I haven’t been able to break away for a couple of big games. And sadly, I won’t be at Rye vs. Pelham, either.
Not to worry.
I have enlisted a pinch-blogger, a man of the hockey people – fanotgame. He’s enthusiastically provided a little pregame analysis, and will graciously come back with a few graphs of postgame insight later on tonight.
Yesterday
Mamaroneck 5, Pelham 1
Today
Greeley vs. Nyack/Tappan Zee, 5:45 p.m. at Palisades
Pelham vs. Rye, 7:45 p.m. at Playland
Kingswood-Oxford at RCDS, 5 p.m.
Now, here is fanotgame’s Rye vs. Pelham breakdown:
Although neither coach would publicly attribute any extra significance to this match, it is most certainly marked on the calendar by both. My first exposure to this rivalry was the 2006 D-II sectional semifinal, three-OT classic won by Pelham 2-1 on its way to Utica. Rye won the Section the next 2 years, including a 2-1 win over Pelham in the 2008 finals. Last season, the Garnets won two regular season games by identical 2-1 scores. Pelham got the last laugh with a 3-1 (EN) win in the finals.
I will not put much weight on the relative disparities between the Garnet and Pelican records coming into this one. Or the fact that Rye is unbeaten in its last seven while Pelham has lost two in a row. Reports from reputable bloggers had Pelham playing a much closer game against Mamaroneck than the 5-1 final suggests. Pelham has fared better against some common opponents (Glens Falls and Cortland) while Rye has done better against others (Queensbury). And something tells me Pelham kept something in the tank for Rye.
Its No. 4 in New York vs. No. 12. Both rely on youth. Very few regulars on either team graduate this year. Rye’s seniors have more star power. These opponents have two of the better goaltenders in the section. Both coaches are committed to three forward lines and a five D-man rotation. You will see frosh on both teams playing at crunch time. Rye wants revenge for West Point. Pelham wants to show they can compete for a section title. Both teams expect to have to go through the other to get that Section 1 title. This season, that kind of match could occur as early as the quarterfinals. I won’t predict the outcome of the game, but I do look forward to watching it.
Good stuff, anyone care to make a prediction?

Fanotgame is again right on the money with his analysis of the game.
On another note, was there any substance to an earlier post regarding the status of Horace Greeley?
will the mamo suffern game be webcast.. PLEASE say yes
I’m going with my friends at Rye. I think the more reliable senior scoring will do Pelham in by a 4-2 score.
I’m lobbying hard for a webcast of Suffen-Mamaroneck, but some things are not in my control. OK, a lot of things are not in my control. Right, very little is actually in my control.
Playland-
The Nyack/TZ vs. Greeley game tonight is definitely still on, so the cancellation of Greeley’s game over the weekend looks like it may have been an isolated incident.
that ia a great post. I will add that Rye is on a good roll right now and Pelham may be gassed from last nights Mamaroneck game.
great job fanotgame!!!
I like Suff in the matchup with Mamk on Fri. In the first game, a Suff 5-4 ot win, Suff actually had control of the game with 5 min left, leading 4-1. A few penalties later the game got away from them and they were forced to OT. As crazy as this is to say, I think Suff wins Friday, 6-2 with the game not being as close as everyone thinks. A home crowd and a possible Sec 1 final is all the motivation needed in this one.
Predictions:
Rye 3, Pelham 3 (Should be a competitive game. It would be difficult loss for either of these teams).
N/TZ 3, Horace Greeley 3 (Should be a competitive game. It would be difficult loss for either of these teams).
Kingswood-Oxford 1, RCDS 0 (I’m just impressed with the name “Kingswood-Oxford”)
Isn’t that a charcoal briquet manufaturer from England
Rye vs pelham still on for tonight?
just did a quick Google search.
I think the Briquets are 0-11 in hockey this season.
Ned,
I personally have seen the Kingswood-Oxford Briquets play this year…
they were on “fire”
Great job on your guest blog moderator debut FOTG.
Sorry Mike, I do think the JN should spread its coverage around. How many times have we seen Suffern and/or Mamo in the paper or on webcast already this season? But, I understand times are tough and you are spread thin.
Hope Greeley doesn’t quit and the suggestion that they will was just put in the blog by a pot stirrer. It doesn’t make sense anyway because they would presumably still have to pay for their ice and would take a lot of grief from other coaches, not to mention this particular blogosphere. As a fun-loving friend in my law school class used to say “Someone has to be last in the class.” It helped that she had rich parents because she went on to get a couple more degrees after law school while the rest of us schleps had a lot less fun than her and had to go earn a living. Anyway hope Greeley plans to keep on pluggin along.
Looking forward to FOTG Rye-Pelham game analysis.
Can you get “Coffee” Joe to do an N/TZ – Greeley post game analysis?
Seriously, I hope that no programs fold. High school hockey is one of the best ways to expose kids to the game and make them players and fans for life.
I do not know the Greeley situation, so I won’t even speculate, but in general I wish most programs would look at there player pool with the goals that I have these players for 6 years (modified and varsity) and in that time span I will teach them to be productive hockey players.
Say it aint so, you wrote this ” I do think the JN should spread its coverage around” give me one good reason (other then you want to see your kid, friend, cousin, whatever on tv) why a company whos goal is to make money would want to spend their time and capital to broadcast/ cover a game that nobody wants to see or hear about??? That is like NBC broadcasting the Oilers vs. the hurricanes, yes maybe they will get a few of the loyal fans from those teams and cities but thats really it. The Suffern/Mamo games against each other, or against others draw fans from all over. I guess you may have been “last in the class” during BUS 101
postman…we all want to see the Mamk/Suffern game. But the JN has not reported on some interesting matchups over the last 2 weeks:
Rye-Pelham tonight
White Plains – Monroe Woodbury
ETB – SH/I
Lakeland Panas – Mahopac
I don’t recall any John Jay Games
Not saying that these are Mamk/Suff levels, but these are some of the better teams and contests in the area.
I understand the new JN “business model” and how they need to be selective. So I understand why they choose the games they do chose (although Suffern – North was a borefest.)
I have commented that I miss the days when every Rockland team would get at least one JN game covered per year by the assigned Rockland hockey reporter and that also the “other” blog is missing a great opportunity to provide more detail coverage of other interesting games. That would make them more of a must read. But it seems they are only interested in providing very summary coverage from Brewster Ice.
Rye or Pelham…I will look at it from a WP point of view, of course. WP has both won & lost to Rye or the last few years. Pelham…we just can’t seem to get the W with them. They are scrappy, hard playing, and come hard at a team. I see Pelham pulling it off 2-1.
i think the JN underestimates other teams followings and also, hockey fans interest in other games. Of course there won’t be a reporter a N/TZ-Greeley today, but if there was,I would be certain to read the article. Like most fans here, I read all the JN hockey reports.
I believe the Journal News is spread thin as it is, Kevin Devaney left the JN recently and I am sure Mike and Josh Thompson are doing triple duties as we speak. Just be happy we have some presence on this blog.
Let’s face it. Being hockey fans we have seen our sport get short coverage at every level that it’s played at. That is part of the reason we all have a chip on our shoulders, which incidentally is a very good trait to have as a hockey player.
Mike- that was in no way meant for you. I agree with Ta-Da
very good points by all, yes there are many games each year that could warrant more coverage, boy I stirred it well with this one.. good job all.
Any updates on the Briquets?
Any clarification on Greeley?
The lovely Postman:
Ya see my handle up there, that’s what I thought when I saw you were back. You are the antithesis of Fanotgame, all Suffern partisanship all the time and never a gracious word for the opposition. Your son graduated, let others have their day.
Does the JN cover only one class of football? Obviously not. Half the section in hockey, ie, Division 2, is interested in what is going on with the top competition in that division and I’ll bet they buy newspapers.
Btw, I graduated with honors from both my undergrad business school and law school.
LOL.. lighten up, its all in fun, I have written many times on how people take this blog way too seriously, and I have often written and said gracious words about many a player and team. I challenge you to find where I have ever said a bad word about anyone on here. I may challenge ignorant comments quite a bit, but have never commented negatively on a specific player ever. Unlike many others on here. Are you really so insecure that you need to let me know how well you did in college?? And if you look back I agreed with everyone who said there are many quality games that should be covered. I must say, I do like your first line of your last post, very witty.
Any updates rye vs. pelham
Sportswriter State Rankings got updated:
http://www.newyorksportswriters.org/reference/hockey_ratings_2010.shtml

Anyone have updates?
Tied 2-2 after two
Sorry, that’s Rye and Pelham
3-2 Rye in the third
5 min to go
MacInnis ties it with 2 min to go.

http://jukebox.lohud.com/photos/refers/index.php?gallery=Pelham%20at%20Rye%2002-03-10
Ends in a tie.
Rye 3 Pelham 3
Bundy nailed it…great call
4-1 n/tz over greeley
Sounds like a great game. Can’t wait for FOTG analysis.
..ahem, but I did call this game, 3-3, (see 12:10 pm post).
How did my Oxwood-Kingsford prediction turn out?
You dominated the game, but gotta watch the penalties. And ref… That overtime goal was off a rye skate so it should have counted for Pelham.
Al Bundy,
Great call on Rye/Pelham tie.
Way To Go Pelham!
Classless “chipy” and inaccurate comments which hopefully wont come from objective Pelham fans.
41-37 SOG and Pelham “dominated”?
No, the game was overall generally even with equal credit to both teams.
postman….as you stated “I challenge you to find where I have ever said a bad word about anyone on here. I may challenge ignorant comments quite a bit, but have never commented negatively on a specific player ever. Unlike many others on here.”
Now that will have me LMAO all the way to bed. Hysterical…
great game. great call by Ned. I sent my thoughts to Mike. I think he will start a new blog subject and we can all analyze it.
To Way To Go Pelham.
The game was not at all dominated by pelham. Also that last goal also didnt count because the net was off, and the puck was deflected by a skate.
Ok I am the one who KICKED, not a hand pass, the puck into the net in OT and I do admit that I kicked it. It was the right call by the ref and I didn’t argue the call at all
MacInnis,
Class comment If you’re really him. Congrats to a really tough game by you and the rest of your team particularly being 3rd game in a row.
Class act Pelham. Let’s hope Rye and Pelham find themselves on the separate sides of the bracket, so if the two teams can weave thru a competative DII group, there can be another classic at West Point.
hockeymom.. great!!! its all in fun!!!! I honestly am not 100% sure I believe everything I write but to me its makes it interesting. We have fanotgame, ned, lohud, etc.. for the real technical stuff, I like to be the color commentator. it is a lot safer for me to play devils advocate here then at home, my wife doesn’t always find it funny.. ha ha
Whats going on with the Postman? Is this the “kinder and gentler” version? Damn, I gave it to you a little about the collegiate sec 1 successes.
Your replay was basically, “Thank you” for pointing it out?
What? How about 8 players is all you got, out of how many? I did forget Danny New (providence college) and Hockey Mom is going D1 so thats 10.
The blog could use a little tolerable spice in each thread.
Not sure if you are going to get back to this thread to read this, but every so often I don’t feel the need to jump all over people, don’t worry it wont last long, just sitting and waiting to attack the next dumb comment I read…
OK, I feel much better now.
I expect it won’t take very long before you read one of those comments. Say by noon.
