High Sticking Hockey Rankings

February

There was a little shuffling this week, no major surprises, though. Mamaroneck didn’t take a fall despite the 10-0 loss at Suffern, but I can’t think of a team that deserves to move into the No. 2 slot. White Plains will get a shot on Friday.

  1. Update

    Pelham vs. Iona Prep scrimage.

Pelham and Iona prep played in a scrimage game at the Ice Hutch during a practice slot. Both coaches agreed on the game/practice to help prepare for playoffs. The game was controlled by Ip. Final score was…

    IP – 7 or 8

    Pelham – 2

  2. nooch

iona is a different team now…will be interesting friday night…

  3. update?

Iona worked on different stuff with Pelham today. There was no score to be kept. There were a bunch of special team work with Iona working on its powerplay which looked good. Iona and Pelham went on a little situational 5×5 and then Pelham went on the powerplay. There was no score and coaches blew whistles to coach the teams. I heard that Pelhams #1 goalie did not play and Iona was holding kids out. It was all situational and no score was kept

  4. Update

yes true… Iona was not playing a few players. The score is just a score doesnt mean much, just thought id let people know the number of goals for both teams. And both teams had an even number of time on the powerplay. So the score is not at all unfair do to no team having any advantage over the other.

  5. Not South of the Canadian Border

The Iona Pelham was more situational play. No ref Tim standing center ice along the boards with a whistle.
Pelham worked on their PK down 2 men, Iona worked on special team play. It was a great practice with game experience nobody was looking at the score. Both coaches know what they are doing as they get to work in almost game like conditions but without the banging and bluster that comes with it.
It would be great to see them play a real game with meaning and from what I saw briefly IONA would dominate as they are deeper. A few of IONA players were injured and did not practice Digoia and McDermott.

  6. Update

well said ” Not South of the Canadian Border” but lets tone it down a notch when saying IONA IN ALL CAPS.

  7. fanotgame

Iona has more talent than Pelham and just about every other team in Section One. The Gaels problem is team play and consistency. It does not surprise me that Iona looked stronger in a scrimmage situation. Pelham’s strength is their effort and focus, two things that might not show up in a scrimmage.

  8. That Guy

Trust me . Pelham’s effort was there. They were going all out as hard as they could.

  9. icehole

    5:15 @ Murray’s
    Fordham/St Ant’s game 1

  10. hockeydog

It was a practice for both teams, not a game. Get over yourselves.

  11. hockeysense

Here goes the Iona drumbeaters again. I’ve got to hand it to you, you are a relentless group, that is assuming you’re not all the same person. I can only imagine what it would be like if you could actually win a game that meant something. Good luck vs Farrell, you’re teams history suggests you will need it

  12. Sam Kaplan

    Hi All,

Since the games for tonight are complete, and because snow is likely to postpone the Rye – Greeley and the JJ – Newburgh games that are supposed to take place on Wednesday, there are no other games between now and Friday morning that will impact the Division 2 seedings. If the Wednesday games happen to take place, it will be pretty easy to adjust this, as NFA and HG are not worth bonus points. So, the DII sectional seedings stand as follows going into the final week before rankings.

DII Rankings as of Friday, FEBRUARY 12th:

Rank. Team(Standings). Rank Index, W/L Pts. + Bonus Pts. / Games Played

    1. Rye(2): 3.529, 50+10/17

    2. JJ(1): 3.294, 50+6/17

    3. JFK/PV(3): 3.235, 44+11/17

    4. SH/I(4): 3.056, 44+11/18

    5. Y-Town(6): 2.778, 42+8/18

    6. Pelham(9): 2.765, 32+15/17

    7. Pawling(7): 2.706, 36+10/17

    8. Fox Lane(5): 2.611, 42+5/18

    9. Byram(8): 2.444, 34+10/18

    10. Pearl River(10): 2.25, 26+10/16

    11. SN/S(11): 2, 28+8/18

    12. Ossining(12): 1.824, 20+11/17

    1 Rye vs. BYE

8 Fox Lane vs. 9 Byram

    5 Y-Town vs. 12 Ossining

    4 SH/I vs. BYE

    2 JJ vs. BYE

7 Pawling vs. 10 Pearl River

    6 Pelham vs. 11 SN/S

    3 JFK/PV vs. BYE

  13. South vs. Pearl River

    7-3 South

To LoHud Hockey. I can’t speak for your D1 numbers, but the D2 numbers are definitely off. Recheck your bonus points and you will come up with the same numbers as in my post above.

  16. Sam Kaplan

Also K/PV has only played 17 games to date.

  17. why not?

How can Yorktown have no bonus points? Check these again

  18. sec 1

Anyone know why Greeley cancelled game tonight against Mt Pleasant at Murrays.

  19. Ned Bigby

    clarkstown s.

Good to see your guys get back on track.

You fix your problems on D?
Did you keep your big guys out of the box?
Did you re-thatch roof in your upstate shanty bungalow?

  20. clarkstown s

    Big Bendy,

Still some overall defensive deficiencies, but standout game by 2nd line. Going to need them to continue to produce. A few skirmishes at end of game, but overall more disciplined.
Would still like to see a forward or two rotate back to help on defense….... Better than having to call my absentee landlord to deal with the smell of stale socks hidden in the dumbwaiter.

  21. Ned Bigby

Good to hear…you guys could run the table and get a good seed…

Any idea what they would do if Palisades had to host playoff game(s)?

Not that a trip to that mall isn’t a great bang for my entertainment dollar but…besides being too small, it’s weird because the ice surface is like 2 feet higher than the ground so these players look like giants…it accentuates my already low self-esteem.

oh yeah….I checked out your website…good stuff on there.

  22. Rocket Fuel

How pathetic is your program when you blog about winning a controlled practice/scrimmage against a small school with about a .500 record?
    Newsflash:
    A: it was practice!!!!
B: because it was practice it doesn’t count for squat!!!
C: nobody cares how well u did in a practice!!!

  23. ETB

How does ETB only have 5 bonus points? I thought it was 1 point for every team you play with an above 500 record.

Mamaroneck, White Plains Twice, Sleepy Twice, New rochelle, Fox lane, notre dame of batavia, – That is at least 9 right there.

  24. Ned Bigby

    clarkstown s

I guess you are busy…or your 14K dial-up modem timed out.

I guess I should get some work done…

Have you noticed brainfreeze has gone missing?
And postman seems like he’s been on a Red Bull bender…coincidence?

  25. clarkstown s

Ned, Do you actually have a job that someone pays you for?
Though you were a sitdown comic working for kudos from bloggin community? I will not be drawn in to your pathetic attempt to stir up things between BF and I. We had a meeting of the mindless.

  26. LoHud Hockey

Sorry about that. I was a little groggy while finishing that up last night (older kid forced me to go to Chuck E Cheese for dinner so my insides weren’t right, and the younger one was throwing a fit while I was finishing up the calculations). My bonus points were all off, the spreadsheet was looking one column off for everybody and Yorktown being the last in line alphabetically was getting stuck with a big old 0 because of it. These should be correct now:

  27. Iona

    to that guy,

Iona is a great team and I expect them to win the Chshl title no question. Yesterdays work up with Pelham was not a thing where they were keeping score. It was obvious Pelhams number 1 goaltender did not play and Pelham was working on specific things. I watch Iona so it was clear Iona had much more powerplay time than Pelham did and that was probably coaches choice. Your remark () thats Pelham. Everytime I have seen them they always go all out. Iona is ready and is primed for this.

  28. HOCKEY MOM

WP 9 NR 2….nicely done WP! Guess you decided to put it in the net! First 5 goals from the D men. Keep the intensity going cause Friday is the BIG game! GO WP!

  29. east of the river

LoHud, do the seedings get set by points order or index order? I thought points order, but you have sorted by index high to low. And what is the index again?

  30. Go Suffern

will the white plains. suffern game be webcast..

  31. LoHud Hockey

They go by the index. The index is the total number of points divided by the games played. This does not include out-of-state games. So for example Suffern has played 18 games so far, but one was against Northern Highlands, NJ. So they do not get the 4 points for the win or the 1 bonus point for them being over .500, but in turn, their point total is only divided by 17 instead of 18. This way teams do not get punished for playing out-of-state games. Same goes for Mamk’s game against Glen Rock, LP’s game against Northern Highlands, North Rockland’s upcoming game against Old Tappan, NJ, and Greeley’s game against Bethel/Brookfield/Danbury (although they have not qualified for the playoffs, so it wouldn’t matter for them anyway).

  32. east of the river

    Thanks. You the man !!

  33. why?

Why would Greeley forfeit tonight’s game against Mt. Pleasant at Murrays.

  34. LoHud Hockey

Also, as a qualification update, Greeley is out and NTZ & Brewster are still on the outside looking in with a chance to make it.

NTZ needs to win their remaining two games, which are both on the road vs. O’Neill and Byram Hills, to get to .250 overall on the season. Not an easy task for them, but also not out of the realm of possibility.

Brewster has three remaining games, at Mahopac, at Pawling and vs. KPV. They would need to go at least 1-0-1 in the games against Pawling & KPV to get above .250 against D2 opponenets and that would get them in. The result of their game against Pac would have no bearing on their qualification at this point.

  35. for the record

one of mamk wins does not count N.J. team points-4 still 2 seed probably will remain 2 anyhow stupid rule

  36. fanotgame

The seeding calculations are fascinating. So many permutations and combinations.

Lets look at DI first. Looks like top 5 are pretty much set. Suff, Mamo, L/P, WP, South. And with the exception of the WP vs. L/P argument, most bloggers would say those are the top 5 DI teams, in order. But 6 thru 9 (North, North Roc, Pac and New Ro) are pretty tightly bunched. My bet is those guys would rather be 6s or 7s (on Mamo’s side of the bracket) than 8s or 9s (Suffern’s side of the bracket). It is really just the lesser of two evils, though.

The DII matrix is even more interesting. Has that sly coach Witz played it right? Most bloggers would have the top 3 DII teams as Rye, Pelham and SHI, probably in that order. So, a more conventional seeding system would have Pelham clashing with SHI for the right to play the winner of Rye’s side of the bracket in the finals.

It looks like seedings 1 thru 4 in DII are pretty much set at Rye, Jay, KPV, SHI. If it were to end as Lohud has it now, Pelham at 6 would be on one side of the bracket and Rye would likely meet SHI in the semis on the other side of the bracket. But, a lot can change. Yorktown (current #5) could easily lose their last 2 (Pac and L/P) and fall behind Pelham who would be the new 5, as long as the Pelicans do well upstate this weekend and finish off biz vs. Scarsdale at the end of the regular season. Then, it is SHI and Pelham scuffling as early as the quarters with the winner likely taking on Rye in the semis. But, Pawling, with wins over Carmel and Brewster could jump ahead of Pelham into the # 5 slot, especially if Pelham falters upstate.

With point totals between Yorktown, Pelham and Pawling so close for the 5 thru 7 seeds, it could come down to whether Pelham gets a bonus point for playing Salmon River. The Shamrocks currently sit at .500, with games this weekend against Mamo and Pelham. Or whether Rye can beat MW and get a forfeit win over Greeley to achieve the .750 record that gives Pelham a second bonus point for the Pelican’s match with Rye. Could it really be that a Rye vs. MW game determines the seeding for Pelham?

    Interesting stuff.

  37. The Boys

im hearing jj puck is the real deal they might not look pretty in some wins but let me tell you folks they get the job done, does anyone want to make a wrestles

  38. fanotgame

The Boys- I meant no disrespect to Jay. They have had a very nice season. Any team with solid goaltending and attention to defense is a tough out in the playoffs. Their signature game seems to be the early season 2-2 tie with an up and down WP team. Would have liked to see more meat on the regular season schedule. But, with a 2 seed, your guys may have some favorable playoff match ups.

  39. section1

I agree that Jay doesn’t get enough credit for the remarkable turn around they have had this season. They finished last year 4-20-1, and now they are looking for a #1 seed in the tournament. Fox lane, having a similar season last year, isn’t better than Jay, but clearly get more love than Jay does.I think that with help in the playoff bracketing they may have a shot at the sectional championship game.

  40. PELICAN FLASH

just to close the book on yesterdays scrimmage at the ice hutch:
the coaches agreed to work on certain aspects of the game to benefit their team. pelham needed extra time on penalty kill and iona worked on their power play. this was a controlled scrimmage with the coaches stopping play periodically to point out something of note to their players. it went very well, players on both squads worked hard and you could see that both teams benefited from it. as for who was keeping score, what a waste of time. this was a situational scrimmage to see certain players in certain situations. to the guy with his nose on the glass keeping score; if it is that important to you then you deserve a 2 for 1 coupon for hot dogs at nathans on your next trip to coney island. to make something out of a controlled scrimmage like it was a game is a joke.

  41. fanotgame

Rather than do the group rankings, I thought it would be more meaninfull to look closely at possible playoff match ups. Lets use Lohud’s current sheet.

In DI, 14 teams are in. That has Seeds 1 and 2 with a bye and seeds 3 thru 14 playing a round one game.

    Round One:

    Suffern and Mamo get byes.

L/P (3) vs. RTH (14)- L/P can get on the wrong side of the refs, but there is a lot of talent on the Rebels bench. They get it done against an undermanned RTH team by something like a 7-1 score.

WP (4) vs. Mt. Pleasant (13)- The Ice Cats have improved and WP starts a 7th grader between the pipes. Still think the Tiger’s seasoned and skilled defense locks this down, something like 6-1.

South (5) vs. Scarsdale (12)- South is pretty deep this year. Scarsdale has only Olivario, and he may be worn down by now. I’m going with South by a 7-2 score.

North (6) vs. ETB (11)- Now it starts to get interesting. ETB has some firepower and some young D that understand the game. If the ETB goalie can play big and North’s forward’s have the “no finishing” disease, we could see an upset. Maybe 6-4 (EN) for ETB.

North Roc (7) vs. Carmel (10). North Roc has had some big wins, but also some puzzling losses. Carmel has been consistently OK. Think North Roc brings their “A” game and wins 7-4.

Pac (8) vs. New Ro (9)- Another good one. Pac a grinding team with a good goalie. New Ro relies on Prunesti. Do the Indians have the skaters who can control Prunesti? I see a 5 point game for him. New Ro wins 5-3.

    Quarters:

Suffern (1) vs. New Ro (9)- The points and the season end here for Prunesti and New Ro. It will be an accomplishment for him to get close to the net. 6-0 Mounties.

Mamo (2) vs. North Roc (7)- Tigers too much. 7-2 winners.

L/P (3) vs. ETB (11)- Tricky one for the Rebels. Need to stay out of the box, or else the younger ETB skilled players will score. Rebel snipers should be able to find the back of the net against inexperienced goaltending. L/P prevails 8-5.

WP (4) vs. South (5)- rematch of an early season ugly game by South. They have improved. These are the games you worry a little about a 7th grader at the most important position. WP finds a way, though. 5-3.

As expected, Suffern vs. WP in one semi and Mamo vs. L/P in the other.

    On to DII.

12 teams in means Seeds 1 thu 4 get first round byes.

    First round:

Rye, Jay, KPV, SHI get byes

Yorktown (5) vs. Ossining (12)- The O is coming on strong. The Huskers have a bunch of seniors that don’t want it to end here. Tough call on this one. I’m going with a magical effort by Annibale and a 5-4 OT win for Ossining.

Pelham (6) vs. SNS (11)- Coach Witz is perfectly happy with his Pelicans perched here. SNS has had a dissappointing season. These two played a close quarterfinal game last season. SNS had Marasco, Pelham had Flory and others. Gotta believe Pelham gets the job done, say 4-2.

Pawling (7) vs. Pearl River (10)- Which Tigers will we see? They have had some big ups and other downs this season. Pearl River playing better with their goalie back. Pawling a little more talented and wins 5-3.

Fox Lane (8) vs. Byram Hills (9)- These two played two, close regular season games. Both won by the Foxes. Can they get it done a third time in the same season? If Williams stays hot, yes. If not, the Bobcats advance. Gotta believe the senior Lane 2-1 OT.

    Quarters:

Rye (1) vs. Fox Lane (8). Rematch of yesterday afternoon’s affair. Rye has too much firepower. Yesterday’s Garnet effort was lukewarm, at best, and the puck was still in the Foxes zone all game. I don’t predict scores in games Rye plays in, but I think the Garnets advance.

Jay (2) vs. Pawling (7)- Jay has to find a way to score a few here. Pawling not such an easy DII 7 seed. Still think Jay’s “defense first” approach gets them a 3-1 win.

KPV (3) vs. Pelham (6). This is the penalty Pelham plays for playing such a tough schedule. If the Pelicans survive, their strategy is brilliant. They test themselves all year and get to the semis with Rye and SHI on the other side of the bracket. But, KPV has shown itself to be no slouch. Can the Pelicans score enough to win? I say yes, by a 4-3 margin.

SHI (4) vs. Ossining (12)- It ends here for the O. SHI has more talent. A focused senior Pesce with support from his younger brother are too much. 6-3 Legends.

That would set up a Rye vs. SHI and Jay vs. Pelham semi bracket.

  42. Dumb Statement

    FOTG
I tried doing the brackets in bracketmaker
    http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?tid=350081&tclass=
    for Division1
    Where did I go wrong?

  43. Ta-Da

NTZ did not qualify? Would be the 15th seed?

  44. fanotgame

To statement-I think one side of the bracket is 1,4,5,8 and the other side is 2,3,6,7.

Also, for you Pelham fans, if the matrix I described holds up, your Quarter match with KPV could be without Santini trolling the blue line. Another blog entry has him out thru playoffs with a bum shoulder. But, if that is true, KPV could lose its last two and be a 4 seed. That would make the Pelican’s quarterfinal at #3 SHI.

    Interesting stuff.

Lohud- What happens if KPV gets a forfeit win from Greeley and loses to either Ossining or Brewster, but beats the other to finish 12-6-2 with 63 total points, while SHI beats both Scarsdale and Pearl River to finish with the same 12-6-2 record and 63 total points? Who is the 3 seed?

    is that right?

  47. fanotgame

Ta-da. I think that is right. Unless NTZ finds its way in with an end of season winning streak. Then, instead of a bye, Mamo play them in an opening round game.

To Section 1. I think Jay is going to be #2 seed. SHI too far behind. KPV missing a key player down the stretch. And, I think the only way Jay gets past Rye for the top seed is if Jay wins out and Rye either plays Greeley and loses, or doesn’t take a forfeit and reschedules someone else and loses and then loses to MW next week and doesn’t get additional bonus points from playing Pelham and MW and Jay doesn’t lose existing bonus points. Remember that Rye gets another bonus point if Jay wins out (playing Jay as a .750 team). Rye also gets another bonus point if Pelham wins 2 of its final 3. And maybe another bonus point if MW finishes at .750. Jay could lose a bonus point if Pawling stumbles down the stretch. Both Rye and Jay gain the same bonus point if BH finishes at .500 or above.

In DII, its the race between 3 and 4 and then among 5 thru 7 that will go down to the wire.

No idea. This is such a convoluded system.

I think Santini and the younger Pesce play Rock Paper scissor, and the best two out of three gets the higher seed.

I hear alot of talk about JJ I personally think they could potentially be a force in sectionals. They have a strong defense and very nice goaltending. They also have a strong coaching staff that keeps their team focused and prepared for games. Watch out for JJ come Sectionals!

  51. Chris Horton

Come sectionals anything can happen…I believe that with good goaltending anything is possible. The goaltending of JJ is solid from what I have seen and can take them far into the postseason. Offense may be a problem but then again I have only seen this team play for a period and a half. Don’t they have those two brothers or is that another team?

  52. alaskanassasin

From the games i’ve seen john jay play (greeley, and yorktown) seems they have a really solid team and a great cheering section. All the players have very nice physiques and i want to make a wrestles with them all

  53. alaskanassasin is right
