Goodbye

October
22

It appears I have covered my last hockey game.

I won’t be around for the 2007-08 season. My last day at the Journal News is next Tuesday. The following day – Halloween – I’ll be wearing a very strange costume involving a jacket and tie as I start a new gig elsewhere doing some [...]

A lost oldie

September
23

This was something I wrote in Clifton Park after the Suffern-Shenendehowa game. Or maybe it was the next morning. Anyway, I saved it but never posted it for some reason, and I just discovered it. Seeing as I don’t have much material for high school hockey right now and I’m busy with [...]

Awesome idea

September
20

I was thinking about all this debate and hype about Suffern, and it got me thinking about the state semifinal game against Ithaca — the controversy over the Nick Clark goal in the first overtime that was waved off, the shootout, etc. Everyone agrees that a shootout is a pretty poor way to decide [...]

Does this thing still work?

August
10

The league schedules for the 2007-2008 season have been posted on the Section 1 website, as some readers have already noticed. That doesn’t surprise me as much as the fact that people are still checking the ice hockey blog. Our traffic crashed so drastically when the link was taken down that I pretty [...]

I overestimated the Sunday blog traffic

April
16

I guess most people visit our blogs on weekdays, and even some of those people might be unaware that High (school) Sticking is still around at all.  Without a link on the blogs page, we’re pretty hard to find here.

Anyway, feel free to rediscover the place and reopen discussions.  If you’re going to talk about the all-star stuff, keep in [...]

Westchester/Putnam All-Stars and Rockland All-County out today (All-County now presented in Mountie blue)

April
15

Hockey got the cover of the Rockland All-County issue, with Suffern’s Tom Natoli being named Athlete of the Season.

I did an interview with Tom at Sport-O-Rama last week that will air on RNN (channel 19 in Rockland) on Thursday I believe.  I’m not a broadcaster, and neither is Natoli, so don’t hold the results against [...]

Buy the Journal News on Sunday. Then cross the Tappan Zee and buy it again.

April
13

Come on. If you’re a real hockey fan you’ll need both editions of the All-Star issue – Rockland and Westchester. Then you’ll know what you’re talking about when the bad weather sets in on Sunday and you spend the whole afternoon arguing on the blog.

I’ll put something up on Sunday breaking down who [...]

Well, we’re still here.

April
9

I hope a good number of you have bookmarked the blog and checked back periodically.

We’re apparently still in business, even though the link to this blog has disappeared from the blogs page. This means I’ll be able to post something when the all-star issues come out, and we’ll be able to discuss it….in a [...]

The end is near

March
29

Hockey season is over, as some of you may have noticed.

Now that the spring sports are getting started, it seems that High (school) Sticking is going away.

I don’t know the details, but I just wanted to warn you folks. I’ve heard things. We may not be around long enough to discuss the All-Star [...]

Stay tuned for a picture that puts a great cap on this season

March
21

I just got back from the Section 1 hockey dinner and awards ceremony, and there was a group shot at the end with players from two teams that were thought not to get along. I’m having a copy e-mailed to me, and then I’ll throw it on here.

I wore Suffern blue and sat at [...]

I hear there was a senior game

March
18

…but I’m a little occupied this weekend with all-stars and girls lax previews, so I missed it. I believe the Journal News had someone at the game in my place.

I hear a lot of players couldn’t make it either, which is unfortunate. I was at last year’s senior game and it looked like [...]

cooking up an All-Star package

March
14

The Rockland and Westchester/Putnam all-star packages will come out on April 15th (we think). I’ll let you know if that changes.

Right now I’m starting to consult with coaches and shuffle things around. It’s pretty tough. There are so few spots compared to how many notable players there are around here. When [...]

Moving on…

March
13

The discussion on the last post is getting dangerously hilarious, so we’ve got to move forward.

Believe me, when I got back from Utica, I felt like it was finally all over. The travel, the deadlines, the blogging. But it’s not. We’ve got to do all-star stuff, and we’ve got the senior game [...]

Remembrances of semi-final Saturday

March
11

Well, by now we know that Ithaca won the state title in Division 1 and Monroe-Woodbury won in Division 2. Both teams that knocked out our section champs went on to win state titles.

I think it’s much more meaningful that Ithaca won, and in double overtime. That means that Williamsville North couldn’t beat [...]

Ithaca 1, Suffern 0 after four overtimes and a shootout

March
10

I can’t even begin to comment on this game right now because I’m exhausted. It’s going to be obvious when you read the story in the paper tomorrow that it was written as the game was being played. I’m really glad I used that method or there would be some very angry editors [...]

Monroe-Woodbury 5, Rye 2

March
10

Well, the Garnets fell behind early again, and it was too much to come back from. 5-0 after the first period. Then 5-2 at the end of the second. There were a lot of opportunities that escaped Rye throughout the game. I’m working on the story for the paper, and then [...]

I’m not making predictions

March
9

I’ve been reading other people’s predictions and sitting here thinking about what mine should be, and I’ve realized I have no interest in making any. It would be thinly disguised guessing. I can only talk about the teams I know, and even when I make predictions about games involving two teams I know [...]

We’re off to Utica

March
8

Suffern will be playing Ithaca in the Division 1 game.  I saw some of Ithaca’s section championship game against Liverpool on TV when I was up in Massena.  They have that kind of thing on TV up there.  Anyway, Ithaca plays a similar style to Suffern’s.  They also have a freshman goalie who gets a [...]

Rye joins Suffern in Utica

March
7

Rye was clearly the better team tonight against Salmon River.  Shamrocks coach William Plante noted that his program is in a down year, but he didn’t harp on it.  He gave the Garnets plenty of credit.

In the story I think I said this group of Rye players and their coach had never won a section championship [...]
